I am also reporting the same issue for my Chromebook - same model as the post above. I've had the same problem on 2 chromebooks.

I too have an Acer 14 (4 weeks old) with the problem. It only happens,
however, with high data rates (eg U Tube). Talked to Acer. They said it was
my HDMI monitor or HDMI cable. Not so. I don't know whether it is a
hardware problem or a Chrome OS problem. I have version 55.

Is this issue reproducible at ver 56 on a beta channel?
fr...@gmail.com <fr...@gmail.com> #15
I just reproduced it on beta channel v56.0.2924.67. I have an Acer R11.
Don't know if this is the same for others, but I've actually found a way to reproduce it quite quickly, instead of waiting a random amount of time:
- Attach Chromebook to external monitor through HDMI
- Close the Chromebook to go into docked mode
- Now quickly and repeatedly use your mouse to click anywhere on the screen and simultaneously press the ESC key on your keyboard repeatedly.
- The screen should black out after a short amount of time (under 30 seconds) of doing this.

I also have this issue. My Samsung TV goes off if I pause video I'm streaming and my Acer 14" chromebook is closed. I have an external Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. If I open the chromebook and hit play, I get audio from the TV but no picture. The only way to get the picture back onto the TV is to restart my chromebook. At this point, I have to open the chromebook every time I want to pause a streaming program. Sigh.
me...@gmail.com <me...@gmail.com> #19
This just started happening for me on my Acer 14 as well over the past week. Happens even when not in docked mode (using both the laptop monitor and extending to the external monitor). The external will go black (but still be on) and the laptop continues to think it is connected to the external. Restarting restores the dual connection.

I also have a Lenovo N22-20 80VH (Lenovo distinguishes between 80
& non-80 models so I figure I should, too.)
I'm rather new to Chromebooks, but been building, fixing, using micros since 1979. I'm glad to see I'm not alone with this @ 20 minute blanking of an external monitor when i Docked mode.
I have had this happen whether I am in Stable, Beta or Developer channels and also Dev Mode. (I Powerwash a lot)
One time it ran for about 3+ hours before blanking. I *think* I was listening to music on my SD Card; I will try + various combos again now that I know so many others around the world are also experiencing this issue.
I did send a bug report a couple of days ago with screenshots. One thing I found interesting was it took two screenshots labeled Display 1 and Display 2. Even with the external monitor blank, the screenshot showed the background picture.
I may have been in extended mode at that time--probably was so I would have a screen to see. :)
Good Luck!

FYI - I've found that not running the browser full screen was a good
workaround for me. I can run maximized and don't have any trouble, but as
soon as I run the browser full screen, and then try to move another window
or tear off a tab, the screen blanks. That may help you until they get it

I ran for 3-6 hours in Docked Mode the last couple of days... by having a game up.
Version 56.0.2924.87 (64-bit)

1. I was on Beta Channel in Dev Mode to run Android apps and had "Jewels 2 Free" up. I played it for about 3 hours while in Extended Monitor, then closed the lid (Docked mode). The external monitor went blank after @ 20 minutes.
2. I Powerwashed back to the Stable channel and No Dev Mode so no Android apps (still). I tried "Bejeweled Classic"--and could not! Sometime yesterday it was removed from the Chrome Web Store and searches for Bejeweled and Popcap (the software company) come up empty.
BUT, I found it online as an HTML5 game at Archive.org:
https://web.archive.org/web/20160303143714/http://bejeweled.popcap.com/html5/0.9.12.9490/html5/Bejeweled.html
I played it for over an hour in Extended Monitor mode (Chromebook screen open, but I turned down the brightness and closed it most of the way so it would not distract me).
I closed the lid, Docked Mode, and played it for another hour--Yes!
I clicked on Menu toward the bottom left (it shows the sound levels, quit or go back to game functions) and went to bed.
I woke a few hours later and it was still on, now over 5 hours and still going.
I woke later to get up for the day and... the screen was blank, because... I forgot to plug in the power pack.
So, I went back to Archive.org and have Bejeweled sitting in another window as I read email and send this report. It's been about 20 minutes and it is still going. My guess is that there is some code in the game that is better than the 'keep alive' extension.
Maybe you want to try bringing up the game and see it that helps your Chromebook keep working while Docked?

I am having the same issue with an HP CB (HP 11 G4 P0B78UT#ABA)
I have it connected via HDMI to a Dell monitor. When I close the CB it goes into docking mode. After some amount of time the Dell goes black but the CB thinks its still connected to the Dell monitor. The monitor does not report "no signal" so its getting a signal, but the screen is just black. Only way to fix it is to restart the CB.
Thanks

Over the past two days I have been trying to force the screen to blank and no I cannot. I tried having just email open and left the computer alone. After 15 minutes, the monitor went to sleep. After another 45 minutes I moved the mouse and the monitor came back on.
So I tried overloading the CPU--not too difficult for an Intel N3060. I had 5 YouTube videos playing, each in their own small window, 2 emails open with one being the Outlook.com Chrome app, plus a few browser tabs including this site and also Docs open where I am typing in what I did & when & results. All the results of leaving the CB alone was the monitor going to sleep after 15 minutes.
Except one. I had all this running and grabbed some breakfast. I checked it @ 10 minutes later and everything was running. But after I finished eating and returned, I was greeted with the logon screen. I logged in and the music came up waiting for me to hit Play. There was one Chrome window minimized.
* * * And the monitor just went blank * * *
I just have Gmail, Outlook.com, the audio player and this window open. (as for the minimized Chrome window, it had the yellow bar about it unexpectedly closing and I let it open the tabs; it did)
So, I seem to experience the blanking more when I am typing. I am starting to wonder if it is a "Buffer Overflow" issue with the external keyboard. I'll rearrange my setup where I can use the CB's keyboard, instead.

DU! I'm definitely getting whippy from all this testing (and thinking if what to try next). There's no way to use the CB's keyboard when in Docked mode because... the CB is closed.
But, I did realize that typing in web sites and in Gmail, they are all in the Chrome browser. That's the only common point I can see right now. So now to try doing stuff without using Chrome.

Same issue here. Acer Chromebook R11 connected to an LG ultrawide display.
It may happen anytime when mirroring (in the first couple of minutes or after 2 hours). Sometimes the screen just flickers and then stabilizes, other times it flickers and just goes blank. Rebooting the chromebook rarely helps. At first I thought this was a cable problem. Replaced the HDMI cable but the error persists.

Well, my external Docked monitor just blanked out again.
I finished a lot of emails, a couple of dozen articles on various sites and had only one window open. I was writing an eBook review on Amazon.com. I was all but finished with it when the external monitor blanked. :(
'Up time' was over 4 hours. The screen did flicker at least two times that I noticed.

son...@google.com,
Mine is not a different device, it is still my Lenovo N22-20 Touchscreen Chromebook. It still has blanked over the last few days; sometimes after 4+ hours, sometimes after 20 minutes. I could be watching to a YouTube video or doing email or surfing the net, it is random.
BUT, the screen does flicker 1 - 3 times at various intervals before it blanks.
I have tried other builds including Canary last night (which would not get me the Play Store even using the crosh commands, but that is a separate matter and was reported).
I went back to Stable channel this morning and it is at .87 instead of the .101 build I had on Stable Channel before trying the other channels + Dev Mode when the .101 build failed.

Happened again this morning, while just viewing a web page. And, these reports are for different devices. However, this issue is the same across all (or most) of these cases. In docking mode, you are obviously going to have an external keyboard and mouse connected...right? And some external monitor connected. That's going to be the same for everyone. There are some reports with HP monitors, mine is a Dell monitor, various hardware platforms (HP, Lenovo, Acer, Samsung)...but the common denominator across all these reports is the Chrome OS. That pretty much points to the OS being the issue. Do you really want separate issues created for every possible "device" permutation? That WILL create more confusion and conflation". Sent in my logs. This issue has not been fixed.

Just to be clear, in regards to comment 46:
Do we indeed need to create separate issue reports for every device model that experiences this issue?
Is the issue currently only being investigated and worked on in regards to the model in the original post ("Acer chromebook 14")?
It would be a shame if the issue somehow only gets solved for a specific device model while it appears many different brands and models are experiencing this issue.

If you are saying to press: Alt Shift I
to report a problem, I have done that for my Lenovo N22 Touch.
If this is what you mean, are we supposed to hear back or anything?
If we are supposed to report this issue a different way, please elucidate. :)

@53: No, what I'm referring to is this current issue thread (#677332).
The original poster of this issue stated that he was using a Acer Chromebook 14. In the meantime people with other brands and models have chimed in reporting the same issue, but comment #46 made me think that there is a chance there will only be a fix for the Acer Chromebook 14 unless we make a separate issue page with a new issue number for each device brand and model that is experiencing this issue.
To be clear, I don't know if we need to do this, I'm asking to see if somebody can confirm either way.

We have the same issue with 7 ASUS CHROMEBOX-M004U (CN60) 4 GB RAM with 16 GB storage connected with duel monitors. The Chromebox has an HDMI port and Display port. Each workstation has matching monitors by brand, model, and screen size. But the cable configuration may vary between each workstation. HDMI to HDMI (default), but the Display Port will use an adapter to convert to HDMI, DVI or VGA depending on monitor model architecture.
The Chromebox will work fine with dual screens. Then all of a sudden, the second monitor connected to HDMI port will go blank. Or both Chrome browsers, opened on each screen, will black out. Attempts to use the ALT+Shift+I do not wake up the second monitor. I have swapped out Chromeboxes (same model but brand new), monitors, and cables for 2 different end-users, but the same result. I have increased the RAM to 16 GB, but same result.

I Have an Acer r11 and have the same problem as most people. I have tried to use Keep Awake and dim the laptop screen, however that just gives me the same issue i.e. when I dim all the way down, the machine goes into automotive docking mode and the external monitor randomly goes blank. THe only way to keep it up is to use keep awake and leave both monitors one, even if you are not using the one on the chromebook. I did not have these issues with my Toshiba Chromebook 2.

@63 comment... I should clarify that the monitor does not go through the KVM switch, it has cables to both my desktop and Chromebook because the desktop does not have HDMI. So when I 'hit the switch' on the KVM, I also have to 'hit the switch' on the monitor to switch its input between VGA and HDMI.

My Samsung model xe500c13-k02us blacks out in extended screen mode non stop and mirroring has stopped working completely. It is not an option for this chromebook to use an external monitor or TV with HDMI. My chromecast works for now with it but I bought this for the HDMI feature since my SG6 did not have MHL. I am about t take both to the campfire if I can figure this out.

I was having this issue quite frequently on my Acer 14 inch aluminum with ChromeOS 57. However, I think I may have found a work around and possibly a clue to the developers for solving this bug.
The external monitor was glitching quite frequently, and I eventually noticed that this was happening at times when the mouse cursor was being switched. Whenever the cursor changed between arrow, finger, I-beam and so on, or when it disappeared and reappeared for typing and mouse movements, respectively, there was a good chance the display would glitch. To me, the glitches appear to be caused by memory pointers being disturbed, since I see chunks of windows being displaced and parts of the wallpaper appearing.
I believe this glitches are connected to the blank display issue--possibly when certain pointers for functions dealing with the HDMI output get written to bogus values. The work around that I've found is to go into the Accessibility settings and turn on the large mouse cursors. By doing this, the glitches and blank screens appear to be eliminated and the external display is working just as solidly as the built-in. Before finding this, I was very easily able to get the external display to glitch and go blank using the "random click and press ESC" technique. A few clicks and presses and the display would be gone. With the large mouse cursor active, I cannot get the display to glitch with any number of clicks and presses.
Hopefully this might help a few people!

@70: I switched the mouse to the Large cursors as you suggested and have been running over two (2) hours now with only one 'hiccup' on the external display in docked Mode. Interesting fix....
I had noticed the external display behaving better & for longer periods of time on Stable Channel 57 (3-4 hours, even). I am also in Dev Mode so as to access the Play Store (using crosh commands).
- NOTE: One way I could easily make the docked display blank was to run the 'Outlook for Android' email app. With the Large mouse, I have had Outlook open this entire session without the screen tearing (except once), let alone blanking.
You may be onto something--Thanks!

Have an ASUS CS202SA driving a 24" HP Monitor via the HDMI port: don't think that the computer can handle the 1920 x 1080 resolution - as the monitor goes blank every 10 minutes, and the computer display coordination gets totally out of sync. It's a pain turning of the monitor, pulling the HDMI plug, and opening and closing the laptop screen. Don't know the right sequence, but eventually the screen comes alive. Pressing ctrl-F4 through a sequence finds 1366 x 768 (best), so we'll see if the external monitor won't go blank, now. My guess is that there is a combination of hardware and operating software deficiencies.

Well, version 58 Stable channel has not fixed this issue on my Lenovo N22-20. It did take about 3 hours before the screen blanked after I ran the Crosh commands to install the Play Store.
I was using the Large mouse cursor so I went back and unchecked that option from Accessibility to test this issue with this new build.
But even before running the Crosh commands, and afterwards, the screen would tear for an instant every now and then. I know from experience that my time is limited.
A Note to those using Crosh to enable the Play Store:
The last line used to be: echo "--enable-arc " >> /etc/chrome_dev.conf
but "--enable arc " has been 'depreciated'. The new line is:
echo "--arc-availability=officially-supported " >> /etc/chrome_dev.conf

@82, thanks for the heads-up. I'm at the same version, platform, ARC.
I've had my Lenovo N22-20 up and docked to my 23" HDMI monitor for over 6 hours now with no screen jitters or blanking screen. I used it @ 2.5 hours, then walked away for a couple of hours, then just hit the keyboard space bar to bring it back. I have been back on for about 3 more hours with a clean crisp display.
I did my Outlook for Android app that always seemed to cause the issue while playing some tunes while doing the usual email, surfing & opening a dozen tabs, etc.
Hopefully the fix is now in Dev and maybe it can make it into Stable 59? Please check it out and report back so 'the crew' can know if it is fixed for you.

Maybe is fixed as this is the longest that the monitor has been stable since Christmas. Was so sick of this crap ordered a new laptop should arrive next week. Just my luck Cheers

Not sure if this is related, unrelated, or perhaps a side effect of the fix. After an update to version 59.0.3071.91 on an Acer Chromebook 14 CB3-431 the HDMI video output goes to a single RGB color after a variable period of time. Audio continues. The color displayed on the remote screen will be one of the colors seen on the screen at the time the video is lost. This occurs both in mirrored and extended screen modes. The single color fills the screen. Note that this change to a single color occurs only after a variable amount of time, ten to twenty minutes. This behavior did not occur prior to 59. If this seems to be unrelated, then perhaps I should file a bug report as I cannot find anything similar to this behavior in the list of known issues.

@88, seeing your comment, I decided to try connecting my HDMI monitor to my Lenovo N22 again and closing the lid to be in docked mode. At first, it seemed to be work and I went about 30 minutes seeing it tear a couple of times, but then I had to go do something. I left it with the external monitor still operating properly.
I came back to it about an hour later to a blank screen, clicked the mouse button and it came alive--Nice!
I ran it for another hour or so and saw the screen tear a few more times, but it held sync. Until it didn't.
So, on Stable channel, it is still 'broken'. This sure is taking a l-o-n-g time to get fixed. Maybe non-Intel chips/CBs is the solution?

I tried a variety of things, including a chrome extension that should leave
it on always, nothing worked. Then I saw a suggestion from a user that
he/she went to settings/accesibility, and changed the mouse cursor to
"Large". It worked! Don't ask me why, but I haven't had a problem (other
than a huge cursor) since. As a final test, I wnt back to the normal
cursor and the problem reappeared. Switched back to the large mouse cursor
and everything worked. Please let me know if this works for you.
As a side note, my "research"/Google searches indicated the following
commonalities and differences:
1. All problems I saw were on chromebooks with touchscreens.
2. It is not manufacturer specific.
3. It is not screen size specific.
4. Several suggestions in various fourms suggested updating to the latest
Chrome OS and included a minimum version number. My version was already
newer (and the latest)
5. Some suggested adding the Chrome extension "Keep Awake". It didn't help

I can't believe it's been almost 2 years and this bug is still common place. I literally bought this device with it's sole purpose to stream HDMI video to my TV, and for the first 30 days it worked fine. It wasn't until after my return period ended did the problem arise! Now I am stuck with this garbage computer that will periodically stop displaying video and the only way to fix it is to restart the entire machine, log back in, go back to find whatever I was watching, and then find the spot where I left off... Absurd!
I am not even going to elaborate on the specifics of the problem since it's been detailed to death as described in this and many other threads. Just know that I have the problem and it NEEDS TO BE FIXED!

Hello!
All of a sudden, neoter of my chromebooks will extend to two external monitors I have. The specs on the chromebook I am currently using are listed below (the other is an ASUS C100 Flipbook with 32bit and new version of the os).
The first monitor was a Samsung Syncmaster SA350. Worked fine for several months (even though it said it was 'not playing nicely' - but it did) then, all of a sudden, no extension. I thought maybe the monitor was tool old. Yesterday, I bought a Samsung C32F391FWN (32" curved) and am using the HDMI cable supplied with the monitor (the flip has mini hdmi to hdmi which is why i am using this older Samsung Chromebook).
Extension will work properly sometimes. On every occasion, when I plug the cable into the chromebook, the notification pops up in the bottom right acknowledging the monitor model number. The variation is at this point:
(1) sometimes it will then display the extension and i can close the lid on my chromebook and use my ext keyboard and mouse for a while, until the external monitor will go all blue or gray and will not go back until I unplug the HDMI from the chromebook
OR
(2) the monitor will remain black except the monitor info pop up of 'HDMI' and menu for a brief moment. The mouse clear goes into a dark abyss from the chromebook screen. so there is 'space' , but no picture.
And on the asus c100p flip. when i plug in the micro hdmi to hdmi, the computer recognizes the monitor, and there is an extension, as the windows disappear from the chromebook monitor, and the mouse goes into the same abyss, but the screen is not only blank, the power indicator light starts to blink as if nothing is plugged in.

It's a year without a fix, and I'm sure the bug fixers are hard at work fixing this, but respectfully, they should consider posting an update on their progress before the one year birthday comes and goes. Otherwise folks might mistakenly believe nobody's working on this bug.

My Acer R11 Chromebook. It seems to work now. I have worked an entire day without an issue. I do not know what to attribute it to however.
wi...@gmail.com <wi...@gmail.com> #100
Having gone through a flurry of updates recently, I decided to retest the screen blacking out problem. Previously, I followed advice from another user on this forum and switched to a large louse cursor which seemed to work (for months). I disabled the large mouse cursor (accessibility functions) and my Acer R11 chromebook now works just fine.

@103, Mike.cha...@live.com: One option would be to buy a non-Intel Chromebook because it appears this is an Intel-related issue. My Samsung Chromebook Plus has no issues when docked.
@106: Thanks for the info. I'll have to connect my Lenovo N22-20 back to my monitor and give it a try. Last time I did, about a month or more ago, it worked solidly for several hours one day, but the next day it started getting that occasional 'jitter' that led to a blank external monitor after a couple of hours.
I've noticed that if I see the screen jitter/jump/break for a split second that it will eventually go dark after this happens a few times. I still believe it is a sync issue.

Well, I've had my Lenovo N22-20 Chromebook docked with the lid closed the last three days and have not had a single blank or even jittery screen. It's been very solid--like it is supposed to be.
I was first on the Beta OS, 61.0.3163.117, but switched to Stable yesterday when I learned it now has Night Light in Flags. Unfortunately, after the Powerwash, it is at 60.0.3112.114 instead of 61.0.3163.113.
On the Plus side, though, it is rock steady on the latest v60 version of the OS.

Happy birthday, Bug! This bug is a year old now. Check post number one above — it’s dated January 2017. Google should just admit they’re not going to fix this bug. Making all these people report the same bug again and again for a year is just so unfair to people in my humble opinion.

I have an Acer "Chromebook 14 for work CPS-471" that is also creates loss of signal incidents to a 46 inch 1080P Westinghouse LD-4268 monitor via HDMI. The loss of signal can be either temporary for 5-10 seconds or permanent requiring a disconnect/connect cycle of the HDMI cable to restore signal. The Chromebook settings show the connected external monitor for short duration loss incidents and show no external monitor at all for permanent incidents. A feedback using shift+ALT+i will be sent. at the next incident and a few after that.

Similar issue here. Have dual monitors connected to Lenovo USB-C dock via my Thinkpad 13 Chromebook. Monitors continually flicker from Displayport to seaching/black screen and then come back on. I have another non-chrome OS laptop that I have connected to the same exact setup (usb-c dock/monitors) and there are no issues whatsoever.

WTF are these 2 comments about & mean to address ?
comment #124 & #125 by marc...
it is how youtube & google fixing SERIOUS issues ?
almost 2 years old [ RANDOMLY occurring ] problem / bug & no fix or attendance to problem, why not ?
I reported ISSUE / PROBLEM / BUG on several accessions by official CHROME OS ISSUE reporting facility, nobody contacted me back !!!
theoretically [ let assume that 100 % ] RANDOM problems do not occur [ surface ] because of mistake in programming,
when programming mistake is made, problem will be reproduceable ALL TIME EVERY TIME when leading sequence will occur, here PROBLEM occur or not occur [ at random ] therefore problem is not result of programming mistake but DELIBERATE youtube / google intention to make problem RANDOMLY be visible - such RANDOM PROBLEM generator [ based on some specific LOGIC ] is very simple to make !!!
when such RANDOM PROBLEM GENERATOR is activated, RANDOM PROBLEMS start to occur,
how frequently ?
it is up to PROBLEM GENERATOR logic - every day, every hour, every week or so to say !!!
to whom ?
again, it is up to PROBLEM GENERATOR logic too !!!
because this problem was not practically attended for almost 2 years, it seems that youtube / google has INTEREST that PROBLEM GENERATOR is not removed,
I would like that youtube / google people comment on above made ASSUMPTION -;)

in relation to comment #127 content,
=====================================
1- BUG has RANDOM occurrence, therefore it is not programming mistake,
2- BUG is not BLANKING external TV but is stopping to display what TV was displaying, PC continue to display [ when brightness is increased to any value except ZERO ] & sound content,
3- when TV is stopping to display what TV was displaying, TV scr colour is set RANDOMLY to any colour [ including BLACK ], but TV is reporting to receive signal from PC,
4- TV continue to be connected to PC & TV is receiving signal from PC [ when TV has no signal on/from HDMI, TV would report on scr; NO SIGNAL ],
5- BUG has occurrence on TV connected by HDMI to PC, as TV is not MONITOR,
I hope that my above comments shall clarify mis-understanding of this RANDOM BUG -;)

Since my initial submittal - Comment 117 by scotth1894@gmail.com, Feb 16 - I have sent numerous "Shift-Alt-i" reports. Are these helpful?
BTW a co-worker using a Chromebook 14 has the same issue occurring using the HDMI port. He is using multiple vendors of monitors all of which newer models than what I show - both larger and smaller size. So the issue seems to be video support.

after more than 60 min of play of each selection, BUG [ 677332 ] did not BLANK / did not stop to display video, on my external TV !!!
BUG [ 677332 ] is stopping to display video on external TV connected by HDMI cable only when play videos from youtube, and stopping to display videos is occurring after RANDOM time elapse from starting to do it !!!

Because I do not have any issues while following myself my SET-UP - including inside latest chromeOS ver of 68.0.3440.87 (Official Build) (64-bit).
Under different set-ups I had plenty of very frequent lost of VIDEO signals to TV, but now under my PUBLISHED set-up I did not encounter not even ONE lost of video signal to TV that would result in POWER-OFF my BOTH chromebooks to temporary fix issue.
IMHO - read my posts carefully, follow my published set-up to smallest details & you to may [ shall ] not encounter any more that issue !!!

Regardless of more or setup that I have, this shouldn’t be happening unless there is a power saving mode that I have setup that can be turned off that might help. It is weird because it only happens on YouTube for me. Which would be the last area I would expect it to happen.

My Pixelbook randomly blacks out and reboots with external monitor docked. There appears to be nothing initiating the blackout and reboot. This is occurring on the Stable channel Version 67.0.3396.99 and the previous verson. I have tried 3 different external monitors and about 12 different docks and USB-C to HDMI cables. It happens with ALL of them!

I thought I would chime in here since it is 2018-09-03 and I have now had this issue happen to me.
Acer Chromebook 15 and having identicle black out and crash issue.
Chrome Version 68.0.3440.118 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Doesn't matter the monitor type.
Trying to extend the desktop to the external monitor: invariably at some point in time the extended monitor goes blank. Sometimes crashing the Acer Chrome 15, sometimes not, but still the chromebook thinks that the monitor is still on as you can roll the mouse off screen and roll it back. While in the office we tried this with two other non-acer chromebooks. Easily duplicated the issue on those as well. Tried with AOC portable USB 3.0 external monitor and an Asus MB169B+ external USB 3.0 monitor. Exact same issue crept up. Interestingly enough we often had to reboot the chromebooks for them to even recognize the external USB 3.0 portable monitors. The middle school has 400 of the smaller version of thee chromebooks so I am going to test it out at the school next week on a few of those devices.

I realize Fresh and Clean has a workaround apparently involving the use of a large cursor, but noting that this did not apparently work for everyone will await some more permanent resolution of this issue.

Describe process for "switching to MP4 codec"...?
fa...@gmail.com <fa...@gmail.com> #167
to be exact as mp4 container is synonymous with AVI codec [ advanced video interface ] & AVI codec is equivalent to h264 codec, you shall force chromebook [ or chrome browser ] to play youtube videos [ force to stream them to you ] in mp4 container with h264 codec for video,
google search is always your best friend to find A to your Q, here;
chromebook play youtube video in h264
and you shall get A to that Q, probably as first result at top of page ;-)
when you install that extension, your PC GPU shall be reduced about 300%, or to say differently; without that extension GPU use is about 300% higher to play / stream youtobe video in preferred by google / youtube container & codec then in mp4 container with h264 codec - as h264 codec is extremely efficient !!!
without descending into codecs WARS; which one is better for what ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
in MHO & in my view;
1- h264 was & is FHD [ 1080p ] content compression most advanced codec,
2- h265 will & is UHD [ 4k with HDR ] content compression most advanced codec,
3- h265 is & shall be [ at least ] TWICE more EFFICIENT then h264 codec,
google & youtube people have different preferences because they objectives which codecs to use depend on different criterias than yours & many people,
but it is very good things when google & youtube people are allowing consumers to select more suitable way to play FREE content for FREE & at FHD quality !!!
I am using an HP Chromebox using HDMI to a connected HD TV. If the power goes out to the TV (I have the Chromebox on a UPS), it doesn't start displaying again when power is restored. The TV just says "No Signal" on HDMI1. The only way I can get it working again is to power down the Chromebox and then restart it. VERY UNSATISFACTORY!
How is this not being prioritized since 2017 ? on the latest chrome75 it's still not fixed, and makes external monitors basically unusable. the only way not to get the monitor to turn off, is to disable hardware video encoding acceleration in chrome flags. Which in turn slows down video streaming at some point if i'm not mistaken.
It's 2020, I'm having the exact same problem on Acer Chromebook 14 CB3-431 on Chrome OS Version 79.0.3945.119. In other threads, bunch of people suggested that FB Messenger app is the culprit, and removing it solved the problem, however, it did not work for me including a factory reset. It happens after continuous use of about an hour. External display recognizes that there is an input coming only it is only a black screen until you do a power cycle. After the power cycle, recurrence frequency seems to be increased as well. Second time it usually black screens in first 15 minutes. Frankly, randomness of the problem is pretty consistent. I'm surprised this issue has not been solved in last three years given that it clearly seems to be hardware independent OS related issue.
te...@google.com <te...@google.com> #174
I'm having this problem with my pixelbook as well. I'm using a USB-C to hdmi converter, and it has worked fine before. Today I've been getting black outs from that port, so I switched ports and it seems to be ok so far... But only switched it a few minutes ago. This is a real big problem now that I'm working from home every day. Honestly, chromebooks have so many problems (external mouse issues, idle time issues, battery issues, etc etc) that I will most definitely not be choosing it as a computer to work from again.
te...@google.com <te...@google.com> #175
Update, now that my mouse is attached to that port, I am still seeing the cut outs. It seems not to be a display issue, but an issue with the USB port in general - the port simply cuts out from time to time. So while I'm working, my mouse will just cut out for a few second then start working again. This computer is less than 2 years old.
I've just (yesterday) added an external monitor to my Acer C302, by connecting it with a USB-C to HDMI converter. The system appears to work, but frequently (every minute or so) in normal use blacks out for a few seconds. This has happened on a few occasions when playing YouTube or Vimeo videos (to test out the new monitor), but also occurs on a regular set of browser windows. When it's not working, I have limited success disconnecting and reconnecting the cable (including to the other USB-C port); and have had to reboot a few times. I did a hardware reset, but that didn't fix it.
The problem is not limited to the monitor, I have also noticed that network connections (on at least one occasion) seem to drop - I lost ongoing SSH connections. This is not Ethernet over USB-C, it's the built-in WiFi.
On other occasions, it seems stable and usable (I've not had it long enough to tell for how long - but 15 -30 minutes, say). There may be a pattern, affected by the order in which I connect the cable / shut the lid / open the lid / log in / ... but I haven't been able to work out what it is.
I am currently seeing no drop-outs since I changed the cursor to large, although that was only 20-30 minutes ago, so it may be too early to tell.
I'm on ChromeOS 83.0.4099.3. I'll do an Alt-Shift-I report as well.
Hmm... managed to type out that whole report, and was feeling confident enough to try out the other USB-C port (which had previously been playing up), but within a few minutes got a black flash as the screen disconnected and reconnected, so the large cursor thing clearly isn't a panacea. No video related (i.e. YouTube, etc.) windows open.
I opened 1066927(now at Pri 3) 30 days ago and just found out that this is a known problem for over 3.4 years and still not fixed. This problem showed up on my ACER Chromebook after the OS upgraded to 80, now I'm on 81.0.4044.127. This annoying problem forced me to download Youtube videos before I can watch them. You can imagine how troublesome it is when you have to spend more time than usual being locked down at home. At least I see this problem is at Pri 1 now and hope this problem is fixed much sooner.
bb...@gmail.com <bb...@gmail.com> #180
The above suggested work around tests:
1) Large mouse cursor - Not working
2) Lower brightness of the main monitor after power on - delayed the black out a bit from a few minutes to about 10 minutes
3) Disable hardware accelerator - Works!!
Now, is it a Youtube or Chrome issue?
As one of the commenters above, an update:
As you can see above (https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=677332#c193 ), I had real problems with the external monitor (and other glitches, like networking) using a USB-C HDMI converter.
I have since bought a USBC-Displayport adaptor (Cable Matters USB C Hub Multiport Adapter - Works with Chromebook Certified)and it's been rock solid since then.
So the chromebook is able to operate video over USB-C, and I don't know whether it has been a system update, or the new adaptor is better than the old one.
FWIW, the previous adaptor occasionally showed up in display settings as 'DP2HDMI' suggesting that it too was actually USB-C -> DisplayPort (and then converting it to HDMI).
+1 Same issue on my pixelbook connected via USB-C to DisplayPort adapter which claims to support 8K and does work at 4K@60Hz.
About once in O(week) monitor starts switching off and on. Power cycling or disconnecting the monitor makes the issue go away for some time, but it always comes back.
Recently got a Targus USB C Multiport adapter to use an external monitor with my HP Chromebook x360 12b on CrOS 84.0.4147.110 and hit what seems like this issue.
Anytime I am connected to the monitor and I open up DRM-esque apps (repro-ed with Spotify web + android consistently), it would cycle the external monitor. And it was reproducible at will by moving the Spotify window across screens.
I enabled the Large Cursor workaround, and it seems to have worked, no blackouts in the last 45 mins.
I've recently started having the same exact issue with my Acer 14 chromebook.
Likewise, the problem does not seem to be video related and occurs randomly while working.
Just started getting this problem today while at work. I'll try to disable Hardware-accelerated video decode like one user suggested in chrome://flags/ and see if that helps. Both times it happened (within the past 20 minutes or so) I was watching a YouTube video, but the weird thing is that I've been using this Chromebook with the extended monitor and streaming videos (I'm in education and am always looking for more educational short videos for the students since everything is online these days due to the pandemic) five days a week since mid August without issue. No clue why today it randomly decided to pop up.
My 5 year old son has an elementary school issued Chromebook and we have a 27in Samsung monitor we purchased about 6 years ago that utilizes an HDMI cable for connection (and SVGA is another port). After his 9AM Zoom meeting with his teacher, the monitor will black out after an hour or less (remote learning during Fall 2020 - COVID-19 times). If we restart, it resolves itself and can work for the next meeting at 11AM (2 hours later). Sometimes, if it's not been restarted from the previous day, the monitor will remain black when I get him to grandma's house. She thinks it's a settings issue I need to fix or that my son is hitting stuff when she's not looking.
There is a lull between the first meeting and the second meeting that they use to go do IRL work like writing and coloring. I've suggested taking the cable out in between meetings to see if that fixes it, but it still does not work. She pretty much refuses to restart the computer as it's a hassle (which it is!) and thinks it's my issue to fix. It also has the same issue with another monitor at our home that uses an HDMI to SVGA adaptor. I've tried different HDMI cables, too. I'm going to test one more thing to see if it's a resolution settings issue someone suggested in a forumhttps://support.google.com/chromebook/thread/54654808?hl=en&msgid=54727361
was huge so after a few days I switched back to normal and everything has
worked since. I have used 3 or 4 different monitors during the
tribulations. Currently using an Acer V246HL and connecting via a HDMI to
Hi Folks, Acer Chromebook 14, here.
Maybe there's multiple things going on here that are mostly hardware and the residual effect of a mediochre internet connection? - and not a Chrome OS issue as others tried with Flags changes?
As most of the issues seem to revolve around using Netflix or YouTube, this may be the trifecta of issues:
1. Sketchy internet connection (i.e. going back and forth between, weak ,medium, strong)
2. Streaming video. Does compression processing tax the graphic card and in turn drops off support for the external monitor. A crash.
3. Memory. Does video caching tax memory? I don't know how Chrome OS manages such things.
I shut everything down and watched a two hour film on Netflix tonight without other applications open.
There was some flickering. But no black out.
I do have a bad internet connection where it bounces back between weak and medium. That may account for minor flickering.
Could that dynamic too place a burden on issues #2 and #3?
Of course, I don't get monitor black outs or flickering if I watch a movie from my hard drive (e.g. VLC x264).
Hope I haven't repeated what is already known and this helps.
GOOGLE: ANY FIXES YET FOR THIS PROBLEM? Every time I wake up my new HP Chromebook, I need to do 6 clicks to mirror the external monitor. When I walk away from my computer or close the cover, and go back to work on the chromebook, I need to do the same. The display will NOT stay mirrored, even though the box checked "mirror display" stays checked. (I have to uncheck it and re-check it each time.) Ug. I see people have had this problem since 2017? This is a brand new chromebook, my last year's model chromebook and same display didn't present this issue. My husband already spent 15 minutes on a chat with google and wasn't able to resolve...
I am sitting at a Chromebook that exhibits this bug. Acer Chromebook 14, CB3-431
Moving away from the Netflix tab seems to (sometimes) cause it to settle down and stop after about 5 seconds.
CPU usage is not very high, max of 30% on GPU process.
Disabling 'Hardware-accelerated video decode' fixes it, although then the video jerks every few seconds, presumably because it cannot keep up.
Pausing netflix makes it stop.
I filed feedback while it was flickering.
kn...@gmail.com <kn...@gmail.com> #200
Just a theory but has anyone tried changing the resolution? My Chromebook monitor is set to 1080p but when I hooked it up to a monitor it jumped to 1200 as that's what the monitor is set to. I changed it back down and reset and haven't had any black screen problems since. I can't be the first one to come up with this, so this is probably a fluke.
I too have been experiencing this issue since 2016. Now I have an entire school district of teachers who are connecting their Chromebooks to a display (TV) via HDMI and are also experiencing this issue. Frustrating for tech folks, and completely alarming/dismaying to non-tech folks. Please Google, Chromebooks need to connect to displays more consistently if you want to win over the non-Chromies.
My partner experiences this on her Chromebook (some Asus model, it's just reached end of support). It doesn't happen with Netflix, but does with VLC when reading from a USB thumbdrive. So perhaps it's some hardware issue between having watching video with HDMI and USB plugged in? Also it seems to mostly happen shortly after finishing a video.
This happens on a new installed chrome os flex (latest update) with Intel NUC7, and Dell u2520d monitor. Sometimes the screen will turn to black, and come back after 2-3 seconds. I have not found a pattern to reproduce this problem.
I have tried to replace the hdmi cable without luck. The same monitor works well with windows laptop.
So this is something with the chrome system. This problem is very easy to reproduce(with fresh install and maybe a high resolution monitor). I am really surprised that the problem exists for 6 years without a fix. This is very GOOGLE style.
I agree with comments #186 and #187, that this seems to be a DRM glitch with the USB-C-HDMI connector. I've noticed after switching out the dock that completely stopped working after upgrading to 119, the "blink" predictably occurs on most streaming apps (Max, Paramount+...) just after starting a new video, but on Netflix it happens as soon as I've logged in to the website.
Folks, please file a feedback report (alt-shift-i) and include "#dockingstation" in the description.
ChromeOS team tracks "External monitor blacks out" issues using three key pieces of info: mfg/model of monitor, mfg/model docking station, and model of chromebook. Filing a feedback report will include at least two of those.
Most of the comments in this issue are not "actionable" because they don't indicate the configuration the problem is happening with. If you want to help, send a feedback report.
I'm closing this issue as "obsolete" because the original problem report is against Acer Chromebook 14 (CB3-431) ("edgar") running R55 in 2016. "edgar" chromebooks stopped getting updates in 2022.
This is one of the bugs that caused me to drop ChromeOS as an operating system in October 2023. I've been happier on Windows, Linux, and MacOS machines. Basic usability problems usually get addressed on other operating systems.
In my case, it was a 2017 Pixelbook and probably attributed to HDCP. Anytime I switched to a browser tab for Spotify, Netflix, and some other media sites, the external monitors go black for a few seconds before returning to normal. I know there is HDCP certification of usb hubs and maybe mine don't meet the standard, but the screen still shouldn't go black and freeze the laptop for so long.
I also had the problem where external monitors sometimes won't display on device restart, but that was easily addressed by opening the laptop and then closing it again. Annoying, but not a frequent interruption.
I understand that the Pixelbook team was dissolved in 2022 and maybe there are reduced development resources as a result and maybe across the ChromeOS product. Issues need to be prioritized.
The screen on the external monitor randomly and repeatedly goes black for approximately 5 seconds and then turns back on. A black/gray semi-transparent popup appears temporarily which says "HDMI". This happens regardless if I have the laptop closed or open. I really like Chromebooks, I just hope this issue can be fixed so I can enjoy my Chromebook with external monitors. As it is I had to disconnect the monitor and use the laptop's screen. I sent a feedback report as well. I wish you a good day.
1. Connect chromebook to external monitor via HDMI and put it docked mode by closing the lid
2. External monitor will black out at random
3.
What is the expected behavior?
Run chromebook in docked mode without external monitor blacking out
What went wrong?
Acer chromebook 14 hooked up to HP27es monitor via HDMI and usb mouse/keyboard. Closing the lid and running in docked mode will result in external monitor blacking out at random intervals. Once blacked out, the only way to wake it back up is to sign out/restart machine. Keyboard strokes, mouse movement or lifting lid will not resolve the blackout.
