Dear Google, I am working in an environment in Middle East, full of people from 200 countries all around the World, and recording the calls is extremely useful to finally understand what they say. With this arbitrary action from your side not to permit this feature, you push us to other operating systems, after years and years with Android.
I am really very sorry for you

It is mine to decide if i don't want call recording or not. Are you encouraging us to switch to other platform or smartphone rather than android brand. Why not? if huawei or apple offer this on new phone i will gladly change.

Well, there was android.permission.ACCESS_CALL_AUDIO permission in DP2 and 3 but removed in DP4 :(
It worked really well when app was default dialer.
There was even documentation about it athttps://developer.android.com/reference/android/Manifest.permission#ACCESS_CALL_AUDIO
See removal change log herehttps://developer.android.com/sdk/api_diff/r-dp4-incr/changes

@6 I'm probably hoping for something that won't happen:
I hope this means they will allow it for apps that are not the default dialer.

I think it is the opposite of it. The actual documentation being removed indicates (to me) that there was a significant set back. Perhaps legal one.
I wonder what will happen to call recorder on Google Phone app (https://www.xda-developers.com/google-phone-app-call-recording-hands-on/ )
Since it is system app it can use VOICE_CALL audio source but, wouldn't it unfair to 3rd party developers?

@8 I don't get why there is a legal issue here at all.
Can't they offer API, and let the app developers handle the legal issues?
After all, each country has its own laws and it should be up to the user to know how to use the tech in his own country, not the tech to know how users should use it for each country.

I agree with your comments. I don't understand why this is a such big issue with Google. I wish knew. There is no limitation on contact access. To me contact access should be more limited.
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #11
Why are you doing this? It should be up to the user not up to you! Please remove the restriction!

I'd be very interested in a call recording function. Very difficult to find a way to keep record of important calls for insurance reasons.

Once again, thank you for submitting the feature request. After following up with our product and engineering teams, the feature request will not be considered at this time.
Description
Seems we might have built in feature to record calls, but as I've read, it will also beep every 15 seconds.
Not in all countries we have to tell the other side that the call is recorded, so it's too much to have it on these cases.
The reason of not requiring this, is that once the other side knows it's recorded, he might be more careful of what to tell, which can ruin the point of recording. This can affect calls of investigators, reporters, cops, etc...
I'd like to have an official API for recording calls. Maybe just add some manual permission like we have for recording the screen.
It should of course tell the user that he's responsible of knowing the laws in his country, before granting the permission of call recording.
