I'd like to say that this isn't just a Verizon Pixel 3 issue; my Project Fi Pixel 3 XL is also showing the same thing.

If my 3 XL's screen is "off" and I place my finger on the fingerprint reader, the screen flashes while it wakes up. When I first got the phone, at first only the Favorites tray would flash and then the screen would turn on, other times the whole screen flashes while waking up.

I have no tried doing a factory reset because others have done that, and it didn't work.

Yes, Ive seen multiple reports online from many people having this issue with Pixel 3.  Not all on Verizon, but my specific device is.

Also important to note, I've witnessed this screen flash occur on reboot as well just before the white "Google" splash screen comes on.

My Pixel 3 is now doing this since the latest security patch - the bottom half of the ambient display screen, everything below the date and time, flashes white when I lock or unlock my phone. Turning off Ambient display fixes the flashes. It didn't do this before the latest update.

My pixel 3 just started flashing this morning when I click the button to shut the screen off. It now does it every single time I turn off the screen. It wasn't doing this yesterday.

I started seeing the same issue last night where it would just begin to flash when pressing the power botton to either wake or sleep the device. Sometimes it's a small bar (slightly above the time and date) and other times it's the entire screen below the date and time. Meanwhile, a factory reset did not fix the issue and on restart a very bright circle appeared where the time and date would be during the reset.

I noticed the screen flashing several times since I have the pixel 3 (not XL). I could reproduce up to now the conditions that make the flashing appears.

I've had it after unlocking the screen, or double tapping to see notifications on lock screen. Might have to do with the screen adjusting to light.

I've had my Pixel 3 for a little over a week. I just updated it tonight, maybe about an hour ago, and came back to find it flashing white whenever I unlock it, or when a notification pops up while it's locked. Even after adjusting the brightness, it still flashes.

This just started happening on my unlocked pixel 3. Notice it doesn't flash when I turn off ambiet light.

Also happening to my pixel 3. noticed it a couple days ago but it wasn't very consistent. Today it flashes everytime i lock it when the ambient display is on.

This is happening to 2 different Verizon Clearly White 64gb phones me and my mom got for the bogo deal. We have had the phones for a week and a half now and have both seen the screen flashes around 6-7 times now on each phone when it wakes to the always on display or unlocking/locking the phones.

My pixel 3 (unlocked version) screen has been flashing every time I lock or unlock the phone since the last update came out.

I've also noticed two things: 1- when an app is opened and I wake up my 3 XL, the screen flashes and, 2- when an app isn't opened, the flash isn't as intense as it is when there's an ap opened. Note that when an app isn't opened only Favorites tray (icons) flashes.

Steps to retro:
1- Click Power button to turn off screen.
2- Double tap screen to turn on Ambient display (Double tap must be turned on via: Settings > System > Gestures).
3- Unlock phone with fingerprint.

Do steps above with an app opened and displayed and with just the Home screen showing.

Same issue here. I disabled the ambient display and it stopped so it's a software issue.

Pixel 3 user here. I've had ambient display off since launch. I've noticed a quick white flash when I double tap to wake the phone from sleep. Happens maybe once or twice in a day, some days not at all.  I believe it started happening after the November patch.

My pixel 3, 64gb was purchased in Australia in early November. Only yesterday did the lower portion of the screen begin to flash white light at random times in the charging cradle as well as intermittently when the power button was depressed.

Is there any update or acknowledgement of a fix from Google on this?

This was happening on every screen wake when ambient display was turned on. I took it to be replaced (from Telstra in Australia). At the shop we did a factory reset and then tested of it kept happening. It did, consistently on every screen wake. After that the phone was replaced with a new one which didn't seem to exhibit this issue at first. But then on day two I noticed the screen flashing white again after unlocking it once. The previous phone also started with a couple of flashes veggie they became consistent... So I'm worried this will eventually happen to the new phone. My theory is that leaving the ambient display on eventually degrades some hardware component and then the white flash issues become very frequent. So issue is ambient display. This makes the Google stand useless for pixel 3 phones, unless you want to ruin your phone.

Mine Pixel 3, unlocked, 64 GB version is also developing this issue. It's not happening every single time but it is becoming more frequent. I had Ambient Display set for notifications only and the screen would flash bright white when unlocking the device. I'm experimenting with keeping Ambient Display off with double-tap to wake on as I've seen reports that the screen won't flash with this configuration. I've only had the phone since Tuesday and may have to return it. Very disappointing.

I'm also experiencing the same thing with my Pixel 3. It wasn't that frequent before, but now I'm noticing it more and more. For me it happens sometimes when the phone is locked for some time and I double tap to wake it. Like the phone was going to sleep and it suddenly wakes up so it flashes the screen.

I just got my Pixel 3 from the Google Store yesterday and I've noticed that the display sometimes flashes when it wakes up the screen to show a notification. I have the AOD off with double tap enabled.

I have this issue. When occasionally unlocking p3, display flashes white before returning to normal.

Just started happening on mine after a few months in. I'm getting much more consistent flashing with lowered screen brightness and on any screen or app open. Only thing that gets rid of the flicker is turning the brightness all the way up.

Just experienced the white flashing tonight. Not sure why. Seems to be an ambient display thing. I hope it's a software fix!

I'm also getting flashing on a pixel 3 locked screen and only had my phone for 3 weeks.

I'm experiencing the bottom 1/3 of my screen flash when locking the phone or when it goes to sleep. Pixel 3 64 GB activated 11/15 and flash started on 11/25.

Happening here with pixel 3 64GB ambient display is off. When my phone is locked and I receive a text it sometimes flashes very bright for a split second.

Received my pixel 3 yesterday, the screen flashed white once yesterday and now a second time today. Ambient display was on both time, but no new notifications caused the flash.

I just noticed this today. I have a white Google Pixel 3 64GB.

Pixel 3 128 GB Clearly White - unlocked phone bought from Google store  Australia online.
The bottom half of the screen flashes white in full brightness when the phone is locked - when the lock screen comes up or the always on is enabled.

Same here. Pixel 3 64 GB International Edition Clearly White from Google Store Germany. The bottom half flashes almost every time ambient display turns on. Seems that replacement won't fix the issue. Other users have already replaced their Pixels and got the same issue on the new device.

I got it to stop.

I went through and force closed numerous apps and I no longer see the flash. Not sure which app or apps did it but I went from flashing every single time the phone turned the ambient display on to no flashes at all.

This may have been fixed in todays patch.  I have not seen it occur yet but will report if that changes.

I haven't had the issue in the last 24 hours after a factory reset. And again I got the latest security update this morning.

But I'll still raise this issue with Google if it happens again.

BTW, I just checked for updates. My phone software seems to be up-to-date at the time of this issue happening.

I have just updated my Pixel 3 to today's Security Update and the flash happens on my phone, too, at the bottom of the screen when it locks and goes onto 'always on display'.

If I turn off the 'always on display' feature, the bright white flash does not occur when I lock the phone.

Just updated my phone with the latest security update and my screen flashes bright white when locking it and ambient display comes on. Tried turning it off for a while but it comes back when I turn it back on.

The issue has stopped, for no reason at all. It will come back, though, as it was doing it last night but was fine this morning. I am convinced that it's a software bug, and not hardware-related.

It would appear this issue still has not been resolved with the December patch.  I had the screen flash again this morning.

I am having the same issue with a non xl stock variant

I'm having this problem on my Pixel 3 (not XL), which I bought from Fi and have had for about a week. The phone was fine when new but developed the problem today. Just updated to the Dec security update (after the problem developed), but that didn't help.

Has anyone done a factory reset? I didn't see the issue after i did a factory reset.
Not 100% sure the problem will resurface because the flashing was totally unpredictable anyway.

I did two factory resets and the issue remained.  Replaced the phone and got another with same issued.  Factory reset that one too, same issue.  Did you factory reset after the Dec. patches or before?

Just started with me, flicker is pretty bad, stopped when I turned off ambient display setting.

I replaced my handset (purchased at Carphone Warehouse - I am UK based). Will report if problem happens again.

I'm stunned so many people are having this problem, yet it hasn't been addressed by Google properly yet.

My phone started to exhibit the 'lower third' screen flash when locking about a week ago -- however, I also got a flicking lower-third of the screen during normal use (most noticeable on white areas). The screen would flicker like it was about to die or something.

Like many here, I hoped it was a software issue that would be addressed by the December patch. However, the day after I installed the December patch the issue returned with a vengeance. It started as a lower-third flicker but as I continued to use the phone (which makes me think this could be heat-related) the entire screen began to strobe during normal usage, to the point where it was actually hurting my eyes to look at it. Turning off ambient display prevented the flashes from happening when the phone was idle, and the next morning everything was fine.

Given the wide number of cases and the fact that people are finding this issue exists even on replaced handsets, I'm not sure this can be solved by a software update, and I'm tempted to return the phone and get another model.

Yeah, it's obnoxious this hasn't been fixed yet.  Almost a grand for this phone by the way.  No communication from Google either aside from an obscure note in the patch details.  Whatever improvement they made to ambient screen triggering surely had nothing to do with the screen flash issue.   Really annoyed, my next phone likely won't be a pixel or even an Android due to this and so many other issues.  My phone stutters on animations more now then it did before the Dec patch.   Really disappointed in Google.

I had the same issue as everyone else, and it started after the December update. So I did a "soft reset" (power and volume down button) and restarted. It's been almost a week and the issue has not returned. Watch, now it's going to come back.

Comment #84 the soft reset worked for now. I have ambient display on always. No flashing. I will report back in a few days to see if it holds.  Thanks for the tip. Good work!

I am having the same issue, pixel 3 64gb. AOD has been turned off and still happening.

I'm having the same issue on my pixel 3, annoyingly/fortunately it is intermittent so it only stops me using my phone occasionally but I have been able to reproduce the issue more easily in low light conditions.
Firstly the bottom two thirds of the screen will flicker when the phone switches on the ambient display.
Secondly if the phone is on (I tried using the camera in a theatre) the same area of the screen strobes rendering it useless really.

I took the opportunity to switch to safe mode to try it out and noticed that the screen continued to strobe as the phone shutdown. Then it proceeded to strobe while in safe mode, this was simply while on the home screen.
This all occurred on the Nov update, turning off the ambient display stops the flickering when the screen locks but the phone will still start flickering when used in the "right" conditions.

I haven't had the issue yet with the Dec update, but I only got that a few days ago and this issue is intermittent.

It would be great to hear something from Google and their massively experienced and professional QA team, to update their customers on the situation. Turning things off on an expensive phone that I brought specifically for those features is kinda messed up!

I just got my pixel 3 a few days ago, and i noticed this flash but didnt think much of it. Now ive seen the screen flash more than once, it doesnt always happen, very rarely, but it sucks to get a new phone, and then see so many people complaining about this issue, although mine isnt full blown out flashing it sucks that im WAITING to see if it starts happening, instead of just using my phone with my mind at ease.

Do something about it google! this is not a cheap phone.

another one bites the dust.... my husband's pixel 3, 64gb phone just started doing the crazy flickering, fried display... he's had it for a few weeks. Got my new one yesterday - no problems yet but now I'll be expecting it. Hope a solution is in the works - looks like a ton of people on hold for support by phone or chat today - soooo.... no bueno, Google.

This started happening to my pixel 3 today. Unlocked version, purchased from the Google store. Flashing screen seems to happen less often when I set the screen to full brightness and adaptive brightness turned off. This is annoying as heck. I like this phone but I'm starting to regret it now.

Issue came back for me yesterday. Still inconsistent, and not easy to replicate. Contacted support they are sending me a new device after trying to have me just shut off ambient display. That was some great support, telling me to turn off a major feature of the phone.

Pixel 3Xl screen flicker with green tint just started today.  Happens at random but mostly when going to the lock screen.

It is quite annoying, because my phone is just over a week old... :-/ Whenever I put the phone into sleep for the always on display, a yellow flash comes up. Sometimes, I even have this issue while using the phone rendering it completely useless. I have tried a factory reset and even turning off the always on function didn't resolve the issue. Is it broken already?

My pixel 3 has started doing this tonight as well. Fine in use (for now) but as soon as it goes into sleep it flashes once and then intermittently when the ambient display finds its light level.
Reset twice and safe mode fails to fix the issue.

Issue started today for me, entire screen constantly flashes green/yellow. The phone is virtually unusable! Good thing I'm not epileptic

I've had my pixel 3 less than 24 hours and mine started doing the same screen flickering thing many of you have described. In my case it flickers the bottom half of the screen sometimes, generally when going to the always on screen image showing the time and date.

Also today the bottom 3/4 of the screen got a green hue to it, on several occasions, but then later went away.

Pixel 3, I get a single bright flash or continuous greenish flickering every time I lock the screen.

I have also had this issue with the strobe flashing. I unfortunately didn't get a video or picture of it because it surprised me and was so blindingly bright that I rushed to turn the phone off.  I restarted in safe mode and have not had this happen again, however when notifications come up on the lock screen it flashes at higher brightness before reducing to what I have it set at.  I have never had the ambient brightness feature on.  Have been meaning to do a factory reset, just haven't devoted the time to it.

...clarification. I meant to say I don't use the adaptive brightness feature, I set it manually.  I do have the ambient display set for new notifications and this is where the routine brightness flashes occur.

I've had the phone roughly 2 weeks, screen just started flashing none stop. shutting down ambient display didn't help, nor did a system reset. taking my phone back into verizon right after I finish posting this.

This issue just started happening in my Pixel 3. No issues in the 2 weeks prior. I have Ambient Display turned off.

Same issue started happening today. 4 days after I got my Pixel 3 (white).

I've noticed mine only flashes at night, after midnight. Usually when it's plugged in or when I have the head phones plugged in. I had no issues when I drove two hours yesterday, obd2 app on the whole time, Pandora playing, and plugged in. Also when it happens and I turn the brightness to 100% it tends to stop, most of the time anyway. I have the ambient off and lift to check off. I am using the original charger as well.

Still no official word from Google. I'll be returning my phone for a refund this week.

My pixel 3 had only been activated for ten days. First the screen flashed like lightening and now the entire screen is flashing green. I could not use by GPS for driving and missed a text from the doctor when my friend was undergoing a procedure and I was the contact person. Called Google but they want to me to send in my phone then after they receive it, they will send me a new one. I cannot be without a phone for 8-10 business days. Their defected phone and I am inconvenienced to get a replacement. Who knows if the replacement will be defective? I believed that Google was a reputable company that stood behind their product. I am wrong

I activated my Pixel 3 on Nov 28. Yesterday evening it started flashing. After turning Ambient Display off it seems working correctly again.

Just experienced this for the first time today. Screen was off, I hit the power button to unlock the phone and the screen flashed bright white before coming alive and showing me my lock screen.  I tried to replicate and it only seemed to occur with a power button unlock and not fingerprint sensor unlock. I have performed a soft reset only,

My phone flashes bright green when I turn off screen and when I wake with fingerprint. Tried disabling ambient, factory reset, and safe mode with no joy.

It happened to me a few times this week. I got the phone since Nov.

I am having the exact same issue.  Bottom half of the Pixel 3 flashes like a strobe light, green with white, nearly every time it goes to "sleep" and sometimes on start up.  

Purchased Nov. 22, operated for the first time on Nov. 25, flickering issue began on Thurs., Dec. 6.

Turned phone off and on, problem subsided until later on Friday, Dec. 7.  Then on Sat., Dec. 8, it began holding the bottom half of screen in green light instead of just flashing.  Now it is almost continuous flashing any time I do anything.

I took it back to the Verizon store, and because there is an extremely small ding on the top of my shell (which was a result of a bump yesterday, 12/10), they are telling me it is damaged and won't process through as a warranty claim.  This absolutely did not happen because of damage.  I am so frustrated and don't know what to do next ... super expensive purchase to be having an issue like this less than two weeks out of the box.

Now it's strobing constantly, making it almost unusable. On a business trip with no way of returning to store, so stuck with a dud £700 phone for now. Furious

Still getting the bright white flash when I recieve a notification and the phone is locked. Thought it might patch in December's security update but apparently not. Not happening often bu concerned about it becomming more frequent. Don't really want to return the handset if others are having the same issue on new handsets. Surely there has to be an update soon?!

I was getting this regularly when the screen went to sleep but haven't seen it happen since the December update.

I am currently on my 3rd pixel 3 (non XL) handset. Previous 2 both started with this problem after 6 days of use. I took back to Carphone Warehouse and they were happy enough to replace.
Thought I was just really unlucky, but just discovered this thread and realise this is becoming a big problem.

New phone is 3 days old and so far ok,  After reading here, I've just turned off all ambient screen settings to try and preserve the screen. Hopefully this is something which can be fixed with a software update or handset replacements to be issued once the hardware defect is resolved.

Mine also just started doing this after I've had the phone about two weeks. I got a security update yesterday so perhaps it's related to that. As others have said, if replacement unites have the same issue I suppose there's no point in asking for a replacement.

I have the same issue with my Pixel 3.  Bought the phone from google on November 20th.  It flashed on me a few times, I thought I was going to have a seizure.  Any updates from Google?? I really like this phone but this issue is annoying the hell out of me.

My Pixel 3 started doing this about an hour ago. Fully updated with the December update. Had the update since the day after it was released.
Anecdotally, just before I noticed this for the first time, I used my flashlight for several consequtive minutes. Not sure if it's related.

Have had my Google Pixel 3 XL (Sprint) for about 2 weeks and this has happening to me since the 2nd day, even prior to applying the December update. I disabled adaptive brightness and Night Mode and did not see it recur. Then I re-enabled Night Mode and did not see it recur. Then today I saw it again and checked and adaptive brightness had been re-enabled (not sure when, maybe during a reboot). I've disabled adaptive brightness again and will see if it recurs, but it's frustrating because that feature is a great battery saver and the battery was already one of my concerns with getting this phone.

Started happening to me today, got my phone about a week ago from Google.

I am on a replacement Pixel 3 and it is happening again. The same exact issue as the last one I had to return. The only difference is that the bright green flash is a little more intense than the last one.

I'm getting mine replaced by the carrier over the weekend as Google wanted to leave me without any device for 10 days minimum. Reading all these comments I do not hold out much hope of the replacement faring any better. Seems to be mostly the standard PIxel 3 which I believe are LG screens. I don't see how it can be software related.
If this second device goes the same way I might look at binning it off.

I've had my phone for less than a month and it has flashed super bright twice. The first time I thought I was seeing things. It happens when the screen is dark and gets turned back on.

Happened to me as well. Pixel 3 (not XL) clearly white 64 GB. As an observation, it seems that the flash starts when the phone exceeds a certian temperature, after some use. The hotter the phone gets, more chances that the flash is there. If you let the phone some time to cool down, then no more flashes.
But as I said, it's just an observation, not sure if this is the reason.

I can confirm that mine seems to have stabilised after turning off ambient display. Will keep an eye on it and also try both settings when I get my replacement to see if it's consistent.

Same issue.  Pixel 3, 64GB, Google Fi, three weeks old

My screen occasionally flashes a bright light when turning it on. It's happened 6 times and I've owned the phone for 3 weeks. It's a verizon Pixel 3, 64GB, (not XL).

Mine has also stabilised after turning adaptive brightness off. Obviously this is unacceptable but at least I can use the expensive new phone again...

Also noticed that the problem only starts after the phone has been used for a few minutes (similar to the observation about heat in #154 above).

I have a pixel 3 I've had for about 2-2 1/2 weeks. I've seen it flash from the black locked screen a few times. It got progressively more often, until today when about the bottom 1/3rd of the black locked screen will flicker white for 2 or 3 seconds after the phone is locked. Is it certain this is a software issue, rather then a hardware issue?

Have had my Pixel 3 64gb from Verizon for about 3 weeks and flash initially started with ambient display on. I turned it off and it happens less often about once every day to two days at random so I can't reproduce it. I'm not sure if Verizon will replace it if I can't reproduce the issue in store

I ordered my Pixel 3 through Optus (in Australia) and had this screen flickering issue from day 4 of use. Contacted Google, went through all of the troubleshooting (safe mode, factory reset twice, ambient display settings) and it was still flickering with this yellow/lime tinge. Decided to go back to the store since there was a waiting time for me to send my phone to Google to be assessed and thought I might be able to get a brand new Pixel 3 over the counter. I only had the phone 4 days.

I took the phone back to an Optus store to see if they could send it off to be repaired/given a replacement device. They refused to give me a replacement since they couldn't witness the issue themselves and it needed to be sent to their technicians for it to be investigated further.

Picked up my Pixel 3 and within 36 hours the screen flickering was back so I went back to the store to see what they could do to resolve the issue.

The frustrating thing is that the two times I have gone into store, the issue wouldn't show in front of the manager so they were limited as to what they could do for me at the time.

In all honesty cannot trust the Pixel 3 as a product since the device is heading back for a second time to be assessed. I've had the Nexus 5, Google Pixel before the Pixel 3 and I've stuck with them because their hardware/software has been second to none - in the past..

Fair to say, I'll probably be trying to sort out a plan with Samsung or another brand where the build quality/customer service is superior than Google's.

Same issue here. Google Fi, Pixel 3. Running Android 9 and I have a security patch from December 5. Currently the screen is flashing white every time that the screen locks (regardless if I let the screen lock by itself or if I press the side button and force lock). It is also flashing when the screen is locked and notifications start coming in.

It is so weird. I did not notice this flashing before the December 5 update, but I bought the phone near the end of November, so I had not used it enough (though, I think I would have noticed this behavior earlier too).

Same issue here on the regular Pixel 3.  I just noticed the flash for the first time today when my phone woke for a notification.  I keep my phone on my desk while I'm at work and the bright flash made me dizzy for a second, I am not epileptic or anything but I really felt like I could have complications from that flash if it hits me when I least expect it ie in bed at night or something.  I notice this issue when my phone wakes for a notification, or when I double tap the screen.  Turning off Adaptive Brightness has not solved this issue.

I'm really hoping its just a software issue and can be patched ASAP, otherwise I wont be happy. I've loved the transition from iPhone so far but this random flash is so jarring it makes me hesitant to open my phone sometimes.  If it persists, I may go down the avenue of a RMA or an outright return if at all possible.  Never had this issue any previous phones.

Latest update is that the whole screen is flickering today even with ambient display off. We'll see if the replacement is any better but I'm not holding out much hope. Google seem to be in denial that there is any issue.

Just got a pixel 3 from the Google store. Arrived yesterday, transferred everything over.  I plugged it in to charge when I went to bed and I woke up with the screen lit up half way through the night.  It was tinted white and green, with many visible lines. After fiddling with the ancient display settings, I now have it where it flashes bright white at unlock, but otherwise appears ok

I'm also having the same issue with my pixel3. Has anyone figured out a solution?

Mine is flashing all the time.. I've tried all the ideas with no luck.

I've disabled Ambient Display along with the option to have the screen wake up with every new notification and it seems the flash has gone away completely. Maybe there's something wrong with the actual display itself whenever Ambient Display is on.

Same thing happens to my new Pixel 3. When waking up it will flash. Not all times upon wake-up but I'm afraid it's going to get worse. Why would they sell a product at this price with an annoying defect like this?

Tonight I have no issues. This is so weird.
