Thank you for submitting your feedback. From AS 3.3 Beta the Theme editor option has been disabled. You can always choose or change the color by clicking on the color preview(right side of line numbers pane) and choose the desired color in colors.xml.

ph...@gmail.com <ph...@gmail.com> #3
Clicking on the color preview in the numbers pane doesn't do anything. Right-clicking on the color will either bookmark the color or bring up a context menu. Editing or adding a color is not an option on the context menu.

Are you planning enable theme editor in future? Or we should wait for new tool?
ga...@gmail.com <ga...@gmail.com> #5
I used it a lot :c

I'm disappointed that its not available, I just spend several minutes looking for it, while talking to my designer.
It was a great tool for visually getting and idea of how things are organized and demonstrate whats possible to others.

This is so typical of Google... Remove a useful feature, without mention, and give no reason. Best part is that the docs still talk about it as a feature of AS.

I know it can Right-clicking on the color will either bookmark the color or bring up a context menu. Editing or adding a color is not an option on the context menu.
Theme Editor has offered a much more and more excellent solution. All in one place you can see the name statusColorBar, textColorPrimary, colorBackground ... With this tool I quickly and simply decidedly designed my app. Now it's a lot of thesis and it takes a lot more time and looking for a tail of the net.

I hope that you will have the understanding of returning to the Theme Editor before the Android studio
ss...@gmail.com <ss...@gmail.com> #12
I think it was a very good feature and should not be removed unless a new better tool is coming up
c....@gmail.com <c....@gmail.com> #13
It's funny that no information provided about the removal of the theme editor, one of the most important and useful tools for creating and modifying themes for your apps.
I understand that there were a lot of bugs and wrong colors displayed, but since there are no alternatives provided it's a big mistake removing it. Even the documentation doesn't provide any information independent of the theme editor, that's annoying. You have to collect various information from different pages and documentation just to style your application.

I am disappointed that you removed that great tool. Make an update to reactivate it. It's a useful tool. Why did you do that? That's not cool. Really disappointed by you google.
za...@gmail.com <za...@gmail.com> #15
Cool, the only place on the nets you can find that the Theme Editor has been removed from AS is this page.
I've spent a lot of time trying to find it in AS... very disappointed. It was a great tool, RIP.

And, by the way, clicking the color squares at the left of XML color lines in styles.xml does NOTHING.
pa...@gmail.com <pa...@gmail.com> #17
The Theme Editor was an excellent tool for previewing themes in commonly used content and, most importantly, discovering which attributes we should be concerned with customizing. I'm disappointed that this has been removed in favor of an inline color editing tool. Please bring it back!
ga...@gmail.com <ga...@gmail.com> #18
I mean why did they remove the theme editor. It was a great tool for creating or modifying themes in Android Studio, instead of just typing the XML code. If a better tool is coming, I will be thrilled, but still why does Google without any notice remove useful features which increase productivity and effectiveness?
go...@gmail.com <go...@gmail.com> #19

Found why it was removed:

"Unfortunately we had to disable the Theme Editor due to performance issues, complexity of maintenance on top of low usage.. We are working on a better alternative. Wow that sucks. Just spent half an hour searching for that theme editor and went crazy.
If it impacts performance just say so in an option and only activate it when people set the option for it.
Old Tutorials often refer to it, now thats going to help people learning to code, if they cant find a simple color option.

sh...@gmail.com <sh...@gmail.com> #38
Whats the timeline for it either returning or being replaced? This has been a showstopper bug/whatever for 8 months now, and holding off updating to the latest version while waiting for this to be fixed is pretty disruptive.
dn...@gmail.com <dn...@gmail.com> #39
I teach my students as the first mobile tool using Android Studio with java. These constant changes without notice are eroding my motivation for using Android Studio. That way I'll have to give in to the pressure and be forced to go to React, since I'm not coping with so many changes .. it's sad since it's such a great tool and if you continue this way it will end up like Delphi.
nu...@gmail.com <nu...@gmail.com> #40
PLEASE bring it back. It's been way too long! Or at least provide an alternative or something..just do something and hear your community!

Bring it back! This was a very useful tool. There is no comparable replacement out there, especially if you are on Windows or Linux.
ku...@gmail.com <ku...@gmail.com> #43
I spent an hour looking for answer and tried uninstalling it twice thinking it was a bug. Goddamnit they should at least add a small note that they removed it.
he...@gmail.com <he...@gmail.com> #44
We are nearing 2020, having a visual editor to design "visual" aesthetics only makes sense ( that's like Adobe saying they are removing visual editing from Photoshop), especially given a platform this large, but you, of course, don't really care what I think - you'll do what you want and I certainly get that. I understand if it was a performance issue, however, you should have released the tool separately, or provided some alternative given its widespread (documented) use before removal - there is no remote replacement. I do suppose this opened up the opportunity for others to develop such a tool, but since we are busy trying to finish our own apps, this feels... somehow irrelevant.
