We have passed this to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.

I'd like to add :
1. This is not intuitive. People don't expect different behavior for each direction
2. Even outside of the OS UI, most apps, including of Google, don't have different behavior for each direction: Gmail, Messages and even G+ . And they are all with messaging/notifications in their core functionality. The only app I've seen that has a different behavior is Inbox, and this one is shutting down in 14 days or so, and was replaced by Gmail...
3. Swiping in both directions has the same behavior for most Android versions and devices.
4. The action of removal by swiping is much more common than the new actions that swiping is now used for, so it doesn't make sense to have the same level of functionality where there is a huge gap of usage and popularity between the two. This will lead to a lot of frustrated users, who just swipe without thinking much about the direction.
So, it's not easier, it doesn't save time, it's not intuitive, it harms the most intuitive way to use notifications, it's not better in any way.
At the very least, make the swipe in one direction optional, so that people won't be frustrated with this change.

I agree on this feature. I have enjoyed swiping for the notifications menu, and swiping them right/left individually to remove. The previous Android version has tinkered with this menu by adding a snooze option, and I was ok making a quick selection. But now, if i tap snooze, i get three more options, which is just adding another step to my original swipe, which was to just get the notification away. This just seems to be needing some UX love.
There also seems to be a bug. Ive swiped a notifications, select snooze, and then select "silent alert". But the notification doesnt get removed. The only way to remove it is "clear all".

There will be a setting for notification swipe direction in future Android release.
lb...@gmail.com <lb...@gmail.com> #6
@5 Thank you.
Please make it optional so that swiping in both directions will work by default as it worked so far.
Please make swiping to always dismiss , without extra suggestions of snoozing, and have the option you suggested to be available for those who want extra cases.
In short, the simple behavior should stay the same, always, by default: swipe-to-dismiss.

If 'a setting for notification swipe direction' means users can choose which direction to dismiss notifications and the opposite direction will reveal snooze options, that is still not ideal and will be inferior to the current behavior on Android pie.

I don't see the point of have difference behavior for each direction.
The old way of dismiss with long swipe and short swipe for buttons to snooze or block a notification is better than this.
Even better, swipe to dismiss, long press for the buttons to snooze or block a notification or check the app notification settings

+1 on keeping the current behaviour as an option.
I'm ambidextrous, and couldn't care less about the snooze options. Never used them, never will.
I'd very much rather have the option to swipe away (and not into) with both my hands.

Please make the default behavior as the original one: Swipe either way to remove the notification.
If anyone wishes for more advanced options, it should be in the settings, just like on Gmail that allows you to customize what to do for each direction of swiping.

@5 I still don't see it on Android Q beta 2.
Instead, I see the option of either having swipe right to show options, or swipe left.
Attached image to show what I mean.
The request here was that both will do the same thing: swipe to dismiss.

The way swiping was done in Android 8 was so much better. Please let us choose that option as a default. The way I swipe notifications away changes throughout the day based on how in holding my phone. Being forced to only swipe one way is a bad user experience
lb...@gmail.com <lb...@gmail.com> #14
@13 The default one should be what we had so far.
The other options are so rarely chosen that it doesn't make sense to have them being shown for the most common thing to do.

You can look at the comments section here that people really prefer the old way of how it works : swiping in both directions should work for removing the notification.

I'd like a 3rd option of still being able to swipe away both directions, just make it long press to come up with menu/snooze options.
jt...@gmail.com <jt...@gmail.com> #17
This kills me everyday.
I strongly agree with this request. We should be able to assign swipes, if this option is not available, swiping either way should automatically remove the notification.

Please allow us to swipe away left or right, and press/hold to toggle the notification options. Just jumped to Android Q for the first time (Beta 3) and this is a major regression from Android Pie.
At the very least like the current gesture options, allow a third configuration option for the above. I am very impressed how Google is giving the consumer choice on more and more options.

Addressed in DP4, hope this is intended and not a bug.
