The osml10n extension allows quick processing of multilingual Geo-location names, and is very popular when processing OpenStreetMap data. For example, it supports text transliteration and transcription, and abbreviation of the street names.

Note that github name "mapnik-german-l10n" is somewhat misleading, as the project far outgrew the original German Mapnik-related functionality.
