It's an app that was bought by Google, but wasn't updated ever since, making it not work on new Android versions.
There is no workaround. It's a closed sourced app, so nobody but Google can handle it.

To clarify, these are the three major issues with Timely on Android 10:
1. When an alarm goes off it no longer overlays on top of the screen.
2. Snoozing using volume buttons does no longer work.
3. Timer functionality when screen is off is broken.

Just updated to Android 10, had no idea what a mistake that was going to be. Timely is a Top 10 app for me, and for my family members. Losing core functionality as has been described here is a big hit on the value of my Android ecosystem. Anxiously awaiting updates on these issues.

Timely is a wonderful app but is broken on Android 10 (app won't pop up when an alarm goes off, requiring being explicitly opened to shut off the alarm). Please fix it!!!

It is so frustrating that I'm missing medications, missing favorite TV programs, missing the timer ring when dinner should come out of the oven... and I'm having to put up with unwanted 20-25 minute early warnings, all because Google changed my Android phone.
Until this week, Timely was wonderful, directly unlocking my screen so I could immediately either snooze or dismiss the alert. But the Android upgrade forces me to click the button to turn on my screen, swipe to unlock the screen, pull down the notifications from the top of the screen, select the alert, and only then can I either snooze or cancel. (All the while being embarrassed in front of friends and coworkers that this took so long to accomplish.)
Same goes for Nudnik, which worked in a similar way to Timely, except that it took alerts from my Google Calendar, which I could snooze based on my needs at the moment. If it was going to take me just 10 minutes to finish the work I was doing, and then I wanted to be reminded to shower and dress for an event, I could snooze for 10 minutes. Or I could snooze for an hour, if that was more appropriate, without being needlessly interrupted every 10 minutes.
Between these two apps, my life USED to run smoothly. But the latest update of Android has made a huge mess of my life, as I spent hours and hours adjusting the settings to get these apps to get them to work at all (Timely's timer no longer works AT ALL), and have to go so much more effort to use them.
Google's Clock app is worthless for anything but getting dinner out of the oven on time. Google's Calendar works pretty well for recording my events, but Nudnik takes the notifications from Calendar and makes them work for real people who have messy complicated lives. I don't need or want Google's changes to the user interface for these apps. It's NOT an improvement. I'm so frustrated!!!!!

I agree. Make timely work again like it supposed to or make it open source or sooner or later someone will fix it for you and will distribute it outside of Google play. There is no better app and better good looking app.

Just a note for everyone in this thread. I had gone back to Android 9 just to use Timely, but T-Mo just forced an update to Android 10, so once again, Timely is broken for me. I found an app called "The Clock" that isn't broken under Android 10. It has almost the same functionality. I set it up to gradually awaken me and downloaded the alarm sound I always used in Timely. Do a search on SoundCloud - I believe ALL the Timely alarms are there (I always used the one called Smartnight5). Just use an online audio converter to change your ideal alarm to a wave file and then use "ringtone" alarm and select the file. I hope others fine this useful. The app is $1.99 to remove ads so you can try it out first. It works even with the livkscreen, unlike so many other alarms. No affiliation with the app dev, I just found one that was the closest to Timely and thought I'd share. I know how important this was to me, and to some of you. Really upset with Google that they'd just drop this, but I guess this is what they do.

Sorry, I was mistaken. You have to select Alarm Type - "music" and then choose your wav file (from Google Drive, or OneDrive, or internal storage). Again, all the Timely alarms are on SoundCloud. Just search for Timely Alarms. The user is RandomErica.

Since finally updating from 8 to 9, Timely does not trigger alarms when the screen is locked.
When I eventually unlock the phone and I launch the Timely app, the alarm sounds (IIRC the alarm triggers after unlock without launching the app but I cannot confirm).
either way, the app seems to be suppressed by Android and cannot sound alarms at the time required (also, android sometimes complains of battery usage and suggests putting the app to sleep).
Android 9 on UK Samsung S8.

@20 I think I've found a possible cause for it all, which starts from API 27 (Android 8.1).
I don't know why this version, but according to my tests when I tried to implement something myself, that's when the mess started.
Seems that when the task of the app is removed, all alarms that were scheduled are gone. This occurs for AlarmManager, JobScheduler and WorkManager. Reported here even about a sample of Google itself:

Until my latest phone (Galaxy S20), Timely would properly overlay the lock screen. As above, it no longer does so - I have to fight with the unlock before I can even snooze the alarm, never mind turn it off. It's a beautiful app, and I would love to be able to continue using it going forward.

Now I'm fighting "upcoming alarms" from Timely. I don't need "upcoming alarms" from timely, and I especially don't need little icons on top of everything else I'm doing with my phone.
I use Google Calendars if I want notifications in advance of the event. (And then I use Nudnik so I can customize the snooze time on my calendar events based on when I think I can complete my current task, rather than being interrupted every 10-15 minutes.)

Timely is better than it was when I first wrote, but it feels like I'm forced to own one of those alarm clocks that roll off the bedside table and across the room. Now I just have to hunt through what sometimes is a rather lengthy list of notifications to snooze or turn off the alarm. I would really prefer that I not have to put on my glasses to find it.
But hey. If Google is so sure that it's better that everyone owns one of those alarm clocks that roll off the bedside table, who am I to argue for a different esthetic? For something that appeals more to the customer than to Google's programmers?

I have come to depend on Timely for waking up reliably for many years. I just switched to a Note 9 and the fact that it can no longer pop up on the lock screen is giving me a lot of trouble with waking up healthily when needed. I'm in healthcare and this app not working properly is leaving me groggy and irritated every morning going into work.

This is the #1 alarm, clock and timer app, fix it or let other do it (open source).
It hasn't been updated in 2 years and it's still is the undisputed champion, Android 10 update messes up the functionality, this is a regression issue.

Now I have to press the button on the side, go from whatever app I was previously using to the desktop screen, pull the menu down from the top, put my glasses on so I can read the tiny print, find the RIGHT Timely alert (because there will probably be an additional Timely alert for something else coming up shortly) within the list of various emails and other messages, and I'll finally be able to snooze or cancel.
Who decided that THIS is a better interface for MY phone? Why do I have to put up with this crap? I used to be happy with my phone. I'm not so happy any more.
I will add that I'd like one update to Timely itself, after months of living with all of this. I have one alert that tells me the stock market has opened or closed. I set it up with the ding ding ding ding sound they use on Wall Street. I'd like it to cycle through just one set of dings and then turn itself off.
I'm also annoyed that the OS changed how I use google Translate. It was so cool to get a button in my Kindle app that would take me directly to google Translate, instead of having to navigate out of Kindle to the desktop and then into Translate and paste the word or phrase I've copied before I get the translate, and then have to navigate back.
