This is quite a reported issue, and not just for Pixel 4:

I hope that factory reset will fix this, because I'm out of ideas of how to fix it.

I've done a factory reset, and the issue still exists: None of the sensors work.

Do note that it has nothing to do with recovery, because I didn't have one, and Pixel 4 doesn't even have a custom recovery yet, as far as I know.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my Pixel 3 (non-XL): I lost most of my sensor functionality starting in mid-January and have been watching all of the support threads.
*Interesting anomalies*
- February Update: The February update briefly brought back many of my sensors (active edge and screen rotation, possibly others, I forget). But those sensors' functionality was lost again after a restart of the phone.
- March update: Screen rotation and active edge worked again. Proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and other sensors did not come back. At this point I've learned that restarting is likely to cause the loss of the few sensors that still work!
- April update: Screen rotation and active edge worked again. The rest of my sensors are still non-functional (proximity, ambient light).
This *seems* like a software issue. If the problem is, as one Google support person hypothesized, due to corrupt sensor calibration files that are unique to individual phones, then it seems like the only fix would be to get a new phone. I'm *really* hoping this is fixable via a software update, since I am out of warranty (only 1 year of warranty in the US).
To Google: If a software fix is not possible (despite this being essentially a software problem causing a hardware issue) can you extend the warranty on these phones to cover this issue? My phone is running its stock software and gets it's updates directly from Google Fi (my service provider). It is not rooted. And it has never been abused or damaged. I rebooted one day and my sensors were non-functional. Nothing happened in between.

I have this issue as well. Pixel 3XL. My sensors stopped working after the Android 10 update. I was getting some functionality of all sensors for 5min after restarting the phone, but after 5min, the senors stop working again. Most of the time, all my sensors do not work. Some of the time, by barometer, proximity, light and magnemometer work, probably 25% of the time. Accelerometer, compass and gysoscope never work. I would like a new phone as well. Out of warranty since February. It affects many things - auto-rotate, phone-black screen while talking causing other programs to open on the screen, all gestures, panorama camera function and probably more I haven't discovered.

I am having this issue with a completely stock phone. Everything just stopped working out of the blue in late April. Support has been very unhelpful, having me run through the motions up to a factory reset when it was obvious that would do nothing. I would appreciate a fix for my Pixel 3.

I'm trying to determine if this new symptom is related to the sensor issue: I keep installing the May 1 Google Play System update (System>Android Version>Google Play System Update) and it seems to install/restart fine. After installing it and rechecking it, ist says May 1, 2020. Then a couple days later when I check it, it says March 1, 2020. This has happened 3 times now.
Anyone else with nno-working sensors having this issue, or is this just another Google Pixel 3XL issue?

I'm facing this issue from last 4months. Please atleast solve this in June 2020 update.

I'm making a list of all the Pixel 3/3XL features that do not function for those of us with sensors that Google broke for us and won't address for us. Here's what I've come up with so far - any others you guys have that won't work because of broke sensors?:
Most gestures like flip to shsh (do not disturb), camera on with wrist twist, change to selfie mode (with camera on portait mode)
Auto-rotate
Camera panorama mode
camera photosphere mode
camera astrophotgraphy mode
Unable to update to current Google Play System
Squeeze for google assistant

Pixel 3 with a fresh set of broken sensors here. I think it was the July 2020 update that did it for me.
From the list in #22
Most gestures like flip to shsh - broken on Android 10 (July) and 11 Beta
Auto-rotate - working on 10 and 11
Camera panorama mode - working on 11, didn't check on 10
camera photosphere mode - working on 11, didn't check on 10
camera astrophotgraphy mode - working on 11, didn't check on 10
Unable to update to current Google Play System - unknown, still re-installing all my apps after factory reset.
Squeeze for google assistant - working, broken in 10.

one more
- adaptive brightness - not working on 10 and 11
To clarify, all the issues started after the july update. I then opted into the 11 beta as a way to get a major OS change without having to flash a factory image.

I wanted to add some more anecdotal evidence that this appears to be a software issue in many cases: After months of only partial sensor function, I now have full functionality after a recent update (three weeks of full-functionality so far). I will try not to restart or update my phone for as long as possible to keep the current functionality in place!
It seems to be random-chance in terms of how much sensor functionality I will have after a restart or after an update. That's not an acceptable situation.

When I restart my phone on a flat surface, face up, I can get all sensors to work for about 15-30 secs before they stop working, so it has to be a software issue, not a hardware issue, or an actual "broke" sensor.

All sensors were working great for about a month (after the previous Android update around July 15). But a recent update removed all sensor functionality again on my Pixel 3. This is clearly not a hardware issue. Sensor test apps demonstrated fully working sensors after the previous Android update. The sensors work when the operating system chooses to acknowledge them.
** My only advice to people in this thread: If you keep restarting your phone, over and over again, you might get some sensors to start functioning again (just by chance). No guarantees. Good luck! **

Even I am experiencing this issue. I went nuts at first since I had the Android 11 Beta (latest), and I assumed that this is because of the beta version. I tried safe mode, formatted Android 11, downgrade to Android 10, formatted Android 10, flashed the August 20 firmware (AGAIN), and finally gave up. Nothing seemed to work, including the Active Edge. I just lost my entire day on this issue, and finally gave up. I tried contacting the Google Support and they claimed that there is no such issue and asked me to give the phone for a physical check for a fee.
The whole thing happened because I restarted my phone after installing the August update 2 weeks back. For a moment, I assumed that it could be because of the new smartwatch that I paired yesterday, but that is not the case. Also, I noticed that my Google Play security update was stuck at Feb 20 and had to fix it through this app -
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/main-components/main-components-2020-07-01-release/main-components-2020-07-01-3-android-apk-download/
I will follow this thread fervently to know the fix. I intend to keep this phone for another year and say GOODBYE to Google and its hardware. They should continue working only on their cloud and ads and search and sell Android to someone competent.

Well I installed 11 and now I can't even get part time sensor functions. This just sucks so bad. So many functions including nearly all gesture functions don't work. You think they would have looked at this issue for 11.

I got fed up with my half broken phone and tried to fix it myself by trying this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3-xl/how-to/android-10-sensors-bug-t3964904
Unfortunately I messed up and bricked my phone!
Thanks Google for making me go through this terrible experience (end user should not have to mess around with Android internals on stock non rooted device).
Payed top dollar for flagship phone and was only usable without sensor problems for 10months. Not really the way to win people over and certainly not in the spirit of "Do the right thing". Hope you make better decisions in the future.

TIP: I also lost all sensors after the upgrade to Android 11. After several complete shutdown/re-start cycles I got all sensors back except for light and proximity. I can't guarantee success, but it's pretty much the only "solution" I've found for getting *some* of the sensors back online. It works for some of us, but not all.
To Google: Why haven't you fixed this? The sensors all work flawlessly once they have been recognized by the operating system. This is not a hardware problem, but a long-standing software problem that should be resolved.

It's unbelievable that an issue that has been so persistent across Pixel lineup (as far a I know, my Pixel 2 was affected after upgrading to Android 10) and it still isn't fixed. I really feel sorry about Pixel 5 owners having this issue, because history seems to repeat itself.
I'm sorry Google, but you have let us down. As Sundar Pichi said, yes, hardware is hard. But support doesn't have to dissapear or leave us hanging. The fact that the old thread was closed (https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/140476661 ) without proper transition or follow-up by Google is a big let down. No better than Apple.
It just makes issue way worse. It's not as if Google had no $$$.

Description
I've found this issue after I noticed various screen related issues:
- Steps to reproduce the problem (including sample code if appropriate).
Install any app that checks sensors, such as this one:
Try to test the sensors.
- What happened.
Everything worked fine up to the recent days, but now all tests fail. None of the sensors work anymore.
This is important for navigation too. The compass doesn't work.
- What you think the correct behavior should be.
All sensors should work fine.
I tried to re-flash the firmware, and I tried to choose "reset app preferences".
None of those worked.
