I see no reason to have a white line on a black wallpaper on an oled screen. It's just annoying. Please add option to remove.

Even Chrome (Google's OWN BROSWER) hasn't been properly developed with the gestures bar in mind, and is displaying a solid coloured block at the bottom of the screen. It looks terrible.
Google devs - I don't want to worry about this wretched bar burning into my phone display, just because you want the interface to look more like IOS. Most of the 3rd party vendors are offering to hide the bar in their Android overlay, why can't you do it?
lb...@gmail.com <lb...@gmail.com> #62
Chrome can't know what content will be at the bottom (websites content). It could be an important content at the bottom, so it can't have a transparency there.
And as gestures navigation pill works the same as the 3-buttons navigation bar, they need to decide the decision for both, together:
So it's either having no navigation bar at all (like a game, that you need to show it all the time), or show it forever.
It would be annoying to keep showing it for common operations such as going back.
What you could say is that the current API is not enough even for Chrome.
Google needs to add more options for developers and users for this.
There is a difference between 3-buttons navigation and gesture navigation. I know it will make things more complex, but because of them working the same, it ruins the experience of both methods, for each and its own cases.
For users, there aren't even the same sets of user-features for each of them (example is one-handed mode that's not available for 3-buttons navigation).
As for developers, developers don't even have an official API to check which of them is used, and the height of the navigation bar...

I think on web browsers that have bars at the bottom (for buttons like back&forward), this is solved already.
Chrome doesn't have anything of its own at the bottom.
I don't know what is the UI on Apple's devices, but I'm pretty sure Apple never had a navigation bar (with back, home, and recent keys on it), so they don't need to handle both types together.
And checking out screenshots of Safari, I can see that it's not like Chrome on Android, as it has buttons at the bottom.
And back to talking in general:
As I said, before handling this, Google needs to separate the 2 types somehow, but sadly this seems too late because the API is out there for a very long time, since the beginning of gestures on Android.
So if Google will separate the 2 types, developers will need to handle multiple states for the navigation bar, both combined and separate. It's a mess that Google should have fixed from the time that gestures were official.

"Google can if they want to, get rid of the gesture navigation bar altogether by just removing the gesture navigation bar without affceting the touch area for swiping up, because there are four separated dimensions regarding the gesture navigation bar: the navigation bar height, touch area height, and the "pill" height and wide.
Custom ROMs that have the feature to hide the "navigation bar hint" do this using simple tricks: a dynamic RRO if activated will change the the navigation bar height value to zero and lines of code that detect that setting that will activate that RRO and skip the rendering of the gesture pill, by default the touch area for gesture navigation is "pass through", so no need to worry about the bottom part of the screen, it still works, and all apps will automatically render to the bottom of the screen."

Please, for the love of god, fix this. It doesn't work correctly and covers content in your own apps. As an example, in Chrome using tab groups, the pill/bar covers half of the bottom row of tabs. (see screenshot if my description makes no sense) I've noticed it also covers unscrollable content in other apps as well. THIS IS NOT A FEATURE.

vi...@gmail.com <vi...@gmail.com> #242
This wasn't a problem until Google decided to rip the overscan adb command out from under all of the vastly superior third party navigation app's feet... Now we're stuck with this subpar iOS clone of a gesture system and it just looks ugly.
I just want to go back to using fluidNG for navigation, but Google killed that.
lb...@gmail.com <lb...@gmail.com> #243
Such a thing is a different topic and it's also illogical to force it on all apps because of how Android was built so far.
I'm talking here only about the pill that is used when setting a gesture bar , whether the bar has an opaque color or transparent or semi-transparent.
There is no need for me to see the pill.
The bar itself could also be hidden in case it's on gesture-navigation. The bar is usually either matching the app or just white/black, depending on the theme.
But at least allow to hide the pill...
Sadly there is no good solution for buttons bar, but at least for gestures bar I think it's possible, especially for the pill part of it.
If the user wishes to hide the gestures-bar itself, it should probably be for all apps, always. No extra customizations like I offer here for the pill.
The pill can still have auto-hide or always-hide choices in case the user chooses to hide the gestures-bar itself.
lb...@gmail.com <lb...@gmail.com> #244
And as I said, technically it's impossible to make such a setting work for all apps. You can't know what's behind in the app, which is a part of the definition of "transparent".
This would ruin apps that have important things at the bottom: an ad , web content, or even a vertical list , as the user won't be able to interact with them at the part that gets overlayed by the bar.
The only request you could ask (and please on a new post and not here) is to have an option to always hide the gesture-bar. Completely hidden.

In chrome you can make it transparent though. Just turn on chrome:flags#DrawEdgeToEdge
lb...@gmail.com <lb...@gmail.com> #284
In order to have anything transparent, you need something behind, which means you need the developer agree that what's behind isn't crucial to the app.
This isn't always the case.
For example, there could be ads at the bottom, or any other interactive content (let alone web content).
So transparency for the whole bar is not possible for all apps. You can't have color-related solution because it involves the app and not all apps are the same.
What you could have is all-or-none , meaning let the user have a setting about hiding the entire bar/pill.

I changed to a P8P from a S20. Will not continue to use the P8 or any google phone ever again. Most of features are not available in Europe either way so a stupid navigation bar + non working features that are the only reason to use a Pixel phone... Yeah, no brainer. Losing EU market makes no difference to them, but at least I won't have to stand a useless navigation pill that Samsung removed since S8

I mean it's just an option, so f* useless ignoring it for so long.
Guys, maybe in the next 4 years this this "extreme complicated" function will come.

It is just a waste of screen real estate and serves no purpose.

How come we can remove scrollbar content reminders but we can't remove this gesture reminder? I miss my old LineageOS phone. It made me feel respected. I feel like I have an OS for seniors now. Please stop making users feel old.

I do not see the need for a complicated setting as proposed by the reporter of this issue; a simple toggle under Gesture Navigation would suffice.

The
The user's shouldn't be left in radio silence when asked for such a feature like having a toggle to hide something. Consider this feature please, it must be a part of Android 15 as many app developers would go on a hiatus once in a while before tackling this.
Description
The available settings for it:
1. Don't auto-hide (default)
2. Don't show.
3. auto-hide after 1 second
4. auto-hide after 2 seconds
5. auto-hide after 3 seconds
6. Customized: after X seconds.
