When a RecyclerView is configured for a single scroll direction (99.9% of cases), it should ignore touch events in the opposite direction by comparing the horizontal and vertical scroll distance, instead of always capturing them as soon as the touch slop is reached.
Currently it does not, which makes scrolling very hard to use for nested horizontally scrollable lists inside a vertical RecyclerView, as well as nested vertically scrollable lists inside a horizontal ViewPager2 (which is implemented using a RecyclerView). The old ViewPager does not suffer from this issue.
The issue and its cause are described in detail in
A similar fix could also be applied to NestedScrollView to prevent it from interfering with horizontal scroll gestures.
