Same issue here with the Fossil Gen 5 and the Pixel 5.
Incredibly disappointing to have this sort of problem go on for so long, and because the Pixel 5 comes with a pretty up to date version of the Google app, it's impossible to downgrade it a version where it works again.
Please fix.

Fossil Garret Gen5 HMR2 update applied. Doesn't work.
ri...@gmail.com <ri...@gmail.com> #11
I confirm Fossil garret gen5 with hmr2 update. Assistant doesn't work to send SMS message and WhatsApp message and also navigate with Google maps
rh...@gmail.com <rh...@gmail.com> #12
Yes i have installed HMR2 update too, and have a Google Pixel 4a so i too cannot downgrade the Google app to an earlier version which is a known workaround. Changing language setting etc as some say helps also does nothing for these newer devices.
This appears to have been a known issue dating way back to January and still no fix or official statement.
These devices are endorsed and advertised as working with Google Assistant via Wear OS. This is key, basic functionality of Wear OS and quite honestly i am disgusted this issue has not been resolved yet or an official statement has not been released considering Google have recently released details of there exciting fall updates for Wear OS - None of which solve there customers issues.
If i cannot ask assistant to send a text, add a note or reminder or play music etc via this device then quite frankly i don't want it.
I am wondering whether a class action claim can be made on this issue on the grounds of false advertising and inconvenience received.

Pixel 4 XL and Fossil Gen 5.
Same issues.
Haven't tried downgrading the Google app yet, but don't feel like that's an acceptable solution.

Moto 360 Gen 3 paired with Oneplus 8 Pro. My Christmas gift has a completely broke "ok google" detection and inability to send texts through Google assistant. Updating both phone and watch to latest OS and apps does not resolve the issue.

Cannot send text message via google assistant with my voice using Fossil Carlyle gen 5. Play fix it
na...@gmail.com <na...@gmail.com> #21
Came here to add my voice, I have a new Fossil Gen5 LTE on Verizon. When I use Assistant to send, my only option is to "Send from Watch" and the text goes out under my watch's number, not the number on my cellphone. This is not what happens if I send manually from within messages. It goes out as from my cell, and Cloud Sync puts the message in my phone Messages app.
If I deactivate the eSIM and use the watch as a WiFi only device, I have the same issue as all other users, sadface cloud says "Couldn't connect to phone".
All use of the Messages app works as designed both ways when done manually.

Is there any update on this Google? P3/S3 for something that is a gap in usability seems too low. How do we get this lack of functionality escalated? I'm also wondering whether a class action claim can be made on this issue on the grounds of false advertising and inconvenience received.

I also don't understand how this is not a higher priority. There should be
a class action lawsuit!

There are many similar issues. I have a Tic Watch Pro 3 with everything updated.
Asking for calendar appointments causes it to say the first one and announce it is showing you the rest but it's a blank screen.
Asking for hours to a store shows a list of locations but clicking them causes it to say "can't reach phone at the moment" just like with sms.
Asking for directions causes it to say "got it [address]" with a blank screen that does nothing.

Having Same issues on Tic Watch Pro 3. I was able to work around it for a few months by downgrading the "Google App" on both of my phone and watch. Though after a Samsung update, that work around no longer works. Now I eagerly wait for an updated Google App, that will include the fixes.

Same issue on my Fossil Gen 5. Been a loyal Android wear user for a long time but this bug existing for over a year with no food has me looking at other options.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #32
Same error with my Fossil Gen 5 and Galaxy S10. When I try to send a text message and press the Send button, it says "Couldn't connect to phone". All other Google Assistant functions seem to work fine. Please fix the problem.

Hey Google, is good that you announce a new wear os 3.0 but please fix this issues and all the other ones related to assistant before this fall otherwise I don't think that you will have customers that will try the new version of the operating systems

SAme issue. Fossil Gen 5 and S21 Ultra. It's literally thee only reason i want a smartwatch is to text through.....
ll...@gmail.com <ll...@gmail.com> #42
Moto 360, texts result in "can't connect to phone" but they are paired and work together in every other aspect except sending texts.
The fact this bug has effected all WearOS devices for almost over half a year and Google is doing nothing about it has solidified that they no longer care about the platform. "Hey Google" was just recently fixed last month after EIGHT months of being broken across the board.
Never again Google. If you are going to let a platform die like this, don't let manufacturers keep using your firmware.

So users are mad or the developers who won't even fix the issues of Google assistant on wear os despite being Google doest even care about their wear os platform ?
hi...@gmail.com <hi...@gmail.com> #52
TicWatch 3 pro + OnePlus 7t Pro getting the same issue as all others. I'm surprised hardware manufacturers aren't up in arms. TicWatch sells wear OS watches based on functions that Google tells them. Their reputation is on the line if what Google tells them is false. Every watch manufacturer should be all over Google to get this fixed.

Now that the Galaxy Watch4 has a fully working Assistant, will Goole update Assistant for WearOS2 watches?
do...@gmail.com <do...@gmail.com> #57
Can confirm this is still an issue. Purchased my TicWatch Pro 3 GPS soon after release only to find this feature is not working and has not worked since. This feature was 50% of my usage on previous devices.
My future purchases hinge on whether Google fixes this issue before my watch is unsupported and goes it's entire life without a key feature... I feel like it was a bait and switch, honestly.

Description
The only way people have gotten this to work is by downgrading the google app on your phone way back to an earlier version.
Here's a thread about the issue
