This is a continual blocker on us integrating with GTM in Ionic/capacitor, using the capacitor:// protocol.
Is there any update on this beyond the ones you've provided?

It doesn't seem to be difficult to implement, but it is taking a long time..
Is it a feature request, as in, it still has to be accepted internally? Or is it already in development?

I'm building an OutSystems mobile app and the iOS version is also not being able to send information since the protocol is not http nor https. This feature would solve our problem since we would be able to disable the protocol validation, It's been a year since this issue was communicated, any news? Really need to have this working in GA4 :/

We've been notified that we are going to have to upgrade from GA3 (Universal Analytics) to GA4, lest we lose our ability to use GA at all.
We are using GA3 for the same reasons mentioned by other posters above: we can't disable protocol checking in our hybrid app using GA4.
Forcing an upgrade to GA4 effectively invalidate the JS Google Analytics implementations in all hybrid apps, including ours.
For the past 2 years, support for other protocols has been requested over and over.
But now, since users are being forced to upgrade to GA4, support for hybrid apps by GA4 is more relevant than ever.
I would be appreciative if the support for the file protocol, or the disabling of protocol checking, could finally become a reality.
Thanks,
Mitchell Coutinho

What? GA4 si poor for functionality and Google starts to force us to use GA4 instead of GA3? We are waiting 2nd year for simple code change - few chars to update protocol checking condition in javascript - anyone can see how "difficult" it is in GA3 JS source code. Meanwhile we are waiting google starts to force us to use GA4? Really bad news.

Therefore, I think, this question is not for developers and not about the "complexity" of implementation. This is a matter for managers and company policy. 🤷♂️

That's crazy after so many months Google is still unable to give us details about the release if the feature request has been accepted. Is it Q1, Q2...? Is it 2022 or 2023?
It's blocking for both Chrome extension but also hybrid apps (that are many out there for years now!).

Unfortunately, it's not any ticket to share. GA360 support does not have any public ticket system.
I got response from the support team, but it's basically nothing new to report:
"[...] I have submitted a feature request on your behalf, this request will allow users to disable protocol checking for gtag.js. This will inform our engineers of the growing number of clients interested in this feature and would help in affecting their decision in adding the feature in future builds. Although we can't provide a timeline when this feature might launch, this request will definitely be included for consideration as our product team prioritizes requests.".
To continue with GA for non https environments, we currently have two options going forward: 1) gtag.js have to accept non https protocols, 2)

Maybe solution could be to beautify JS code of gtag.js and analytics.js, proxy it, find line checking protocol and enable file:// too. I tried a few minutes and no success. Script are somehow detecting itself and redirect to correct (non-proxy) URL -> I changed variable with value of document.currentScript
to origin

I think that anyone watching this thread is very very sad because of deadline for killing great GA3 1st july 2023 is knocking. Issue with file:// protocol reported 2,5 years ago, status is In Progress (Accepted)
but still not implemented. I have just tested it but file:// is still not working with GA4! It's time to say goodbye Google Analytics in Chrome extensions, WebView, SPA, PWA apps. We will use alternatives.
Description
For GA3 analytics.js (Universal Analytics) we can disable protocol checking byhttps://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/analyticsjs/tasks#disabling_a_task ) but how can we disable it for gtag.js and new GA4 properties G-xxxxxxxxx? In source code of https://www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js there is checkProtocolTask but in https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js after beautification I do not see something similar. Sometimes it is needed tu run google analytics via
ga('set', 'checkProtocolTask', null)
(file://
protocol. Could be please this feature added?
