I have this exact issue, starting directly after the December update. Mainly the lower navigation buttons, especially the back button. Turning off nav button doesn't help.

I've been having the same issue with touch sensitivity on 3-button navigation as others have mentioned here.
ma...@codenest.com <ma...@codenest.com> #15
I bought two Pixel 4a 5G phones recently. Both of them have this problem, exactly as described by the majority of people here: navigation buttons at the bottom are unreliable, and the three dot settings icon on upper-right is often unreliable as well. Both phones malfunction exactly the same way, so it's not exactly a defect on only one device.
It's 2020, capacitive touch screens have been a thing for a decade, and a flagship phone manufacturer still can't figure out how to make them work reliably?

January updates have been made public. The changelog does not mention anything about touch issues, so I am hesitant to upgrade from my properly-functioning November software version.
Can someone with the January build provide any comment on their screen issues?

Hi all,
Went through the arduous process of a replacement for this through the Google Store. Worked perfectly before any updates, then updated to newest version and the screen fell to pieces again. Absolutely no improvement, so we can be SURE it is a software issue.

I have this issue on my Pixel 4a 5G. Most noticeable are the back button at the bottom left of the screen and the three dot menu at the top right of the screen. Have to be very precise with the selection in these areas or the touch will not register. Please fix this!! It was working before the update
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #27
I've got the issue. I use gestures, so mainly notice it on the 3-dot menu in the top right. The keyboard also seems finicky, but that might just be me getting used to a new device.
I've verified with a testing app, and swipes are correctly registered right to the edge of the screen. It's taps which are not recognised (and it is not uniform - the top right and bottom left seem most affected. Lower-mid regions of the screen seem ok).

Having this issue since december 15, cant zoom in, error registration on upper dcreen and navegstion menu, writing is a pain in. I did all the safe mode, reboot and so on, still. THE PROBLEM APPEARED IN DECEMBER PATCH, THE PHONE WAS FINE. It is not the screen protector or else. Pixel 4a.
dy...@gmail.com <dy...@gmail.com> #29
Having the same issue posted, navigational buttons at bottom of screen as well as the 3 dots in top right with settings extremely finicky to press and select on the first attempt. Feels like keyboard is also making more errors. Impacted with the December update.

mu...@gmail.com <mu...@gmail.com> #33
Persistent issue with 3 button navigation not registering and 3 button menus requiring multiple taps directly in the middle of the button to register. How hard is it to just revert the change that ruined these phones? Google doesn't care about us anymore. Remember that next time you're in the market for a new phone. Doesn't matter how nice it is if the developers are just going to brick it 1 month in.
rm...@gmail.com <rm...@gmail.com> #34
I bought a Pixel 4a 5G at end of December. Started with December patch and then later installed January patch. Sometime taps on screen not registered. Mostly on navigation buttons.

it...@gmail.com <it...@gmail.com> #38
Same problem here on Pixel 5 too.
pa...@gmail.com <pa...@gmail.com> #39
I hope that removing the main thread on google support page regarding this bug is not a way of trying to mask the issue? This was the only place where Google acknowledged the issue and now it is gone. I hope the same thing won't happen to this thread too.

My touch screen has dead areas that only work part of the time. I also have no way to pinch to zoom on anything browser wise or photo wise. I can hardly read the font on my phone. Google has done nothing to fix this issue.
te...@gmail.com <te...@gmail.com> #41
Looks like this is back up and they expect, after 3 months, that they will be able to 'improve'. We will see.
a....@gmail.com <a....@gmail.com> #42
And now it is gone again. I wonder if this means they aren't going to fix it

The Verge confirmed a google fix as of 1/15/2021. Crossing fingers for February update -)
dy...@gmail.com <dy...@gmail.com> #46
Unfortunately, that's just a regurgitation of a comment by a non-google affiliated user on the original thread - now deleted by Google - claiming that they expect improvement in the Feb update
pa...@gmail.com <pa...@gmail.com> #47
Seems like February update finally resolved the touch issue 😇
sh...@gmail.com <sh...@gmail.com> #48

I am still waiting for the update. So far I see one "seems like", one "solved" and one "didn't do s***". Any more views or news?

wy...@gmail.com <wy...@gmail.com> #53
I finally received the February security update and the touch sensitivity at the bottom of the screen is much improved. But there are still some serious screen touch issues. If I want to hear voicemails I call (650) 503-4700 but then when I want to turn on the speaker or bring up the keypad the phone is frozen for several seconds. I don't know if the SD765G is out of steam of if other processes with higher priority drown out the screen touch scanner.
nc...@google.com <nc...@google.com> #54
Sorry for all your issues and the delay. This is actually a documentation component. I will loop in the engineering team for investigation.
he...@goldfamily.org <he...@goldfamily.org> #55
What does "This is actually a documentation component." mean? Is this similar to the feature/defect whereby this 5G dual SIM phone actually only offers a choice between 5G or dual SIM.

Whoops - article 55 was posted when my computer was signed into someone else's account. It was me.

So the only solution I've found that works is to simply trade the phone in and purchase a Samsung device. Worked like a charm I have not had one issue since.
