I actually requested to have more for both collapsed and expanded, or customize it.
Even the "styles" settings don't show the current preview. See attached

We could have there (or somewhere else) a setting for the style of the quick-settings tiles, and how many to have in each state (collapsed/expanded).

The current ones (though have nicer description and no issues with texts) made the icons so small, almost as small as the status bar icons. It makes it longer to find what I want to press on because of this.
And of course because the items are larger, there are less being shown than it could be.
In expanded more, there are 8 even though there is space for more as it's in full screen.

Also, when closing the expanded view you have to go back, you can't just swipe up to close expanded view anymore.

Ooof, yeah this issue is kind of a biggie. Having those verbose labels is going to be nice for my mom's phone but a lot of us are genx or younger and already know what the icons mean. Would love to return to having more of these toggles available in the first-swipe real estate.

Same here. I used the Quick Settings numerous times a day and the large chunky icons are horrible. Please, please, please at least provide a setting to remove the text from the icons.

Same. Two swipes and a button press seems so much more inefficient than one swipe and press. Also bring back the always visible vibrate / silent icon. I really don't understand the logic in hiding that unless you go to the quick settings...way too easy to forget you set your phone to silent without it always being displayed.

@11 The "silent" icon actually is displayed permanently. Only the "vibrate" icon is not. Check it again ;)

I also agree. There could easily be 8 smaller buttons displayed if they were 1/2 the size. And adding an option to minimize them would be a good addition as well.

This is a regression in probably one of the most used features. Please add the option to keep smaller icons (without text).

This should be reopened I do not think it's right to call it an intended function and call it a day. We all know your design team intended for it to be this way but open your eyes! It is plastered accross every corner of the internet that has to do with this update. Your design is inherantly bad and breaks UI standards in and of itself making tasks that use to take a swipe and a single tap into 3 times the gestures or worse if you want something orher then wifi in your first 4 settings.

It was intended and you were WRONG! Read the writting on the wall and at least do this. At minimum you can give use the option to hide text and show 6 circles like its been for years. Icons exist for a reason they are supposed to be recognizable without text so why add text for no good reason?

Intended feature? Who cares if it was done on purpose, it was clearly an awful decision. I reverted to Android 11 solely because of this and the change to gpay. And if this awful feature isn't fixed by the time I need a new phone I'll be sure to just buy a refurbished version of a phone that runs Android 11. And even Android 11 has it wrong as it used to be when you expanded the pull down menu you got MORE quick settings, not the same amount. Just because you intended to do something doesn't mean you should put your foot down and stick to it when it's clearly the most hated design decision of Android 12

If you already know the icons you can find everything really fast, now the icons are actually smaller and you have to read the text!

Absolutely cannot tolerate the changes to quick settings. Toggling wifi on and off has gone from:

Swipe down, tap wifi icon, swipe up

To:

Swipe down, tap internet, tap wifi, tap done, swipe up.

From 3 gestures to 5. This is objectively worse UI.

And this is only if I choose internet as one of my 4 primary quick settings which is not a given now that I can only choose 4 instead of 6.

Do not disturb, flashlight, auto rotate, and hotspot are the most commonly used quick setting toggles for me followed by WiFi and Bluetooth. Ugh I abhor that I even have to post this comment in 2022. Give me more options not fewer!

Recently purchased a NEW Pixel 4a direct from Google. I need this feature request activated/implemented, please! I'm ready to sell my phone and buy a Samsung A52, since the constant ring ring ring of my Notification sounds cannot be turned off /reduced without the Ringtone volume being diminished at the same time.

Such a totally simply and critically important feature that most other OEMs have.  It's insane.

I want my ringer volume loud.  I also WANT to hear notifications, but I don't need to be thrown off my chair 20 times per hour either.

The setting for separate notification and ringtone sounds is still in the code, but disabled in the ui (other ui use it). Google, I can understand there are times when we need to quickly silence both - add a toggle switch or check box in volume control to bind them together or unbind them. Those who prefer the new way can continue with it and those who prefer individual notifications volume levels can turn off notifications.

I'll add my own plea! An advanced phone like the Pixel should not be hampered by something so simple as separate controls for ring and notification! I am the reverse of most people, I need my notifications to loud, but my phone ring be relatively quiet. Please, please, at the very least add this to Android 12!

Google please make it possible to separate the volume levels of notifications and calls. I get way too many notifications that don't matter, but the calls usually do matter. I need a new phone and I thing know how long I can wait before I'm back to Samsung.

Having split notifications and ringtone volume should ALWAYS be an option for an end user. I have elderly parents that may try to reach me and one of them had several health issues to include a Traumatic Brain Injury. App notifications are perverse in how often you receive therefore the ability to have them for example at half volume (including SMS/MMS) whilst still having higher volume for calls seems like a no-brainer. I have tried multiple third party apps to address, but they all work terrible. I love my Pixel 3A and loathe the idea of having to switch to Samsung just to have this feature.

Hi, just got a Pixel 5 and couldn't believe my eyes that notifications sound and ring volume can not be adjusted separately. I don't know anyone who wants to control ring volume and notification volume together. What genius came up with this? In my case I often need the opposite of the majority here... I have to hear my notifications from across a room full of loud servers, but turning them up today high gives me an insanely loud ring when a call comes in. Point is, Google had it right before changing it... Everyone wants them separated, if for different reasons.

Please resolve this issue. I see that this is a severity of S3 and Priority of P3. In my company, we use JIRA for our bug tracking system and S3 is a "minor" severity and a P3 is "medium" priority. I hope this issue doesn't just disappear into the black hole of an endless "P3" queue!

It's weird and sad that modern smartphone as Google Pixel can't let choose the user if he wants to mute only ringtone or only notification sound...

I guess the team does not even use a Pixel phone... that's a really, really bad support here.

I must have calls louder than notifications during the night: it's a safety feature for my family in case they are stranded but I can't have the sound of emails and texts waking me up (I work across many timezones).

New Pixel owner here after having a Galaxy for years, and yeah I'm dumbfounded that this is an issue too. Calls are urgent; notifications are typically not. It seems like it must be such a simple fix; I hope it doesn't get forgotten.

Pretty recent iPhone converter, and I previously had a Samsung S8 which has notifications and ringtone as separate volume sliders.

I am quite dumbfounded as well like many others that this is not an option on the pixel 5 or any pixel for that matter since kit Kat.  When I'm working my Microsoft teams app constantly notifies me on both my phone and while I'm looking at a computer screen and I get other notifications like Facebook and other stuff I don't want those notifications to be loud but I do want to hear them still just at a much quieter volume and phone calls are very important because I also get phone calls from my elderly sick parents so I don't want to miss those calls and they don't text or anything too much.

Its pretty apparent that the ability exists since other Android phones have the ability so please google add the flexibility to on link the calls and notifications volume controls or unlink them providing seperate ones based on what the users needs are

Google isn't listening to us.  I read their reply above.  It seems to confirm, they don't care.  Wonder how many people would buy their phone if they knew that the volume control for calls and notification can't be separated?  Unbelievable.

Separate control of notification and ring volume would be so helpful. The notification volume is insanely loud! Notifications and Ringers are 2 completely separate functions that people use in varying ways. Having them tied to 1 single volume control is extremely restrictive. Right now I have the following 3 options: Extremely LOUD Notifications, or very quiet Ringers, or no audible Notifications. This is not acceptable, especially when this very convenient and ordinary feature has existed from the beginning of time.

I just moved from Samsung to Pixel 6 and to say I was stunned when I discovered that Goole seems to think ringtones and notification sounds carry out the same function and should be at the same level is an understatement.

I want my ringtones on at night and my notifications muted, people will ring at night if it's an emergency which I need to hear but I don't need to hear notifications from Google maps asking me to answer a question someone has about a local restaurant.

Just here as a 10+ year Android user to join in on google completely ignoring the requests of their veteran users to add this feature back

So when will the developers actually separate the notification and ring sound volumes on android 12?  That was one of the most retarded things google can do is lock them both together.  Also, on android 12, is a fisher price lock screen that looks like the dumbest clock I have ever seen.

I don't want notifications buzzing all night interrupting sleep, only the calls.

I usually prefer Google software over all others but this little tiny
feature is worth a lot of points in my book.

Just got a pixel 6 and this is the only basic feature I can't believe isn't present. My old galaxy had this, I thought it was default behavior for Android.

This really needs more attention, I work with calls all day long, my option it to fully silence my phone or deal with the extremely loud notifications. I've used the same ringtone & notification signs since my Droid Incredible but for assume reason on the Pixel 3 & 5 the ringtone is half volume & the notification sound can be heard 4 houses away. Just put in the separate slider.

I spent a good ten minutes messing around with my new phone trying to figure out if it was broken. When I googled this and discovered it was standard Android 11 behaviour, I laughed. As if hearing a joke, which this is. Changing call volume should in no way affect notification volume. These are entirely different intrusions.

Until this bug is fixed, I recommend editing your chosen notification sound to 33% its volume, or whatever. Easy enough in an audio editor.

I just bought the pixel 6 and I'm considering trashing it and going with the iphone.  The biggest issue for me is the ring tone and notification not being separate settings.  This is a no-brainer google...you're about to drive me over to the competition

I can't wait for this to be solved. I am a Pixel 6 Pro user and I won't recommend it to anyone because of the lack of this simple feature. juggling work and many other responsibilities. On a daily basis, all I want to do be able to do turn down or turn off notifications and let my phone be a phone (by allowing it to ring!). Please decouple ring and notification volume.

This!! Please!!! I don't want to miss more calls and certainly don't want to be spammed by notification sounds. I do want to see those notifications, just not having bleeps every 5 minutes.

It amazes me that someone thought to join the two sound volumes together as one. Who would ever think this was a good idea?

Replying to #125, the idea was when the phone produces a sound, the volume down button should reduce or finally remove any sound the phone produces, without even look at the screen.

Well maybe perhaps it's time to stop standing by the volume down button

For example when you push the up or dn volume button & the side bar pops in from the left you should be able to swipe thru the different volume control bars & not have to touch the 3 dots to open that menu (still keep the 3 dots but also have the ability to just swipe thru them on the vertical menu too)

Definitely bring it back very frustrated there is not a seperate slider for calls and notifications

My friend and I both have Pixel 6 phones and really want the ringtone and notification volumes separate. I imagine it's a trivial fix to implement and every other Android phone I know of already has this

Why in the heck is this such a problem to fix??? It's been well over year since I bought my Pixel and it's either all or nothing with the notification sounds and getting ridiculous. This is a huge downfall to this phone and OS.

How many people need to comment for this to be corrected? The title is a bit vague but it seems this should have some attention by now.

If they announced this "feature" for the pixel 7 it'd be the most popular thing they added.

Doesn't matter how many comment,  Google will follow their own narrative
and provide some asinine reason for not doing it

Why must I use a SILENT NOTIFICATION sound file just to stop getting loud bleeping sounds?

This is my first Pixel phone. If there aren't separate volume buttons for

Hey Google. It is 4AM right now. I've got stupid non-important email notification . Can't change volume because doesn't want to miss important phone call. Please do separate ring volume and notification volume. I hope all of you will get loud notification right now.

What strikes me as particularly bizarre is that the intensity of the vibration and haptic strength for Ring & Notifications CAN be changed separately (which suggests that the development team are fully aware of the need for separation) yet this same separation is not offered for what must surely be the far more desirable and useful ability to change Ring and Notification volumes independently. this decision really makes no sense to me.

Please provide separate controls for call and notification volumes, as it's an essential feature.

Just got a Pixel for the first time and this is a MAJOR issue. I get tons of notifications and need them to vibrate only. But I want to be able to hear any calls that may come in. I could do this easily on my S10.

Also, I used to be able to make custom vibration patterns for specific contacts and now I cannot on the Pixel.

Please make this splitting happen.
It's a mess have all as the same kind of volume output, when they are clearly two different things. This is the thing.

I also really want separate controls for ring volume and notification volume. The workaround people suggest with setting the phone on 'do not disturb' doesn't work for me because I need to get notifications for emails and messages, but I regularly miss phone calls because I don't notice the ring in time. Just turning up the volume for both doesn't work because I receive a lot of notifications and they are loud.

+1, please work on an enhancement to have a separate volume control for notifications. I was on an older LG V30+ with this feature and was surprised that this was not available on the latest pIxel pro 6.

Pixels are such great phones that it feels really silly to have them held back by the lack of separate notification volume adjustment.

My pixel 5 was such a letdown once I discovered this stupid pairing of ringer and notification volume.
What's worse is there is no effective way to mass manage app notification sounds, so we are forced to suffer.
This wasnt even a problem on some of the first pixels and I think it's almost fair to say this is feature regression!

This is the reason I am buying a Samsung phone and not a pixel. This is so dumb that they took this feature out. I am so sick of Google not listening to what the users want

One more for the pile. This is a ridiculous omission. Have not come across a single user who advocates for current functionality, nor any reason why Google thought it was a good idea. Fix or I will be another who chooses another phone based on this issue alone.

I just got my Pixel 7 Pro. I was loyal to the Pixel line since its inception including the Nexus phones before it. However, I detoured to Samsung when the Pixel 4 and 5 phones were just not great. I ended up using a Samsung S20 Ultra 5G and had to get used to all of the Samsung garbage they include. However, since I just came back to Pixel this week, I found out about this problem and this thread. My Samsung allows individual volume levels perfectly fine. I don't overly customize my phone because of how many smart home apps I have among other apps. I have over 500 apps on my phone and would not be able to easily customize all of the notifications or their individual volumes. Plus, I want to hear most of them. However, I sure don't want to hear them at full volume. I have been running Notification Volume at mid-level and my Call Volume at Max for literally the entire time since I have used a smartphone. There's too much importance for my notifications for me to just mute them. I am waiting to see if this will be fixed or if I will end up bailing from the Pixel line and going back to Samsung. This is such a simple fix and it's been proven to still exist in the kernel code. It's just missing in the UI. For such a simple feature request that currently is plaguing the Pixel line, you would think you could get this done quickly and not lose your fundamental customer base like myself. I was about to buy a second Pixel 7 Pro for my wife but until this is fixed, I will let her keep her Samsung S20 Ultra due to the same issue. She uses the same notifications/call volume levels that I do because of the smart home issues. We both get literally hundreds of notifications throughout the day and I want to hear them all... but nowhere near full volume. Calls we do though. Please add this back to the UI for the next update or else I will bail to the Samsung line and most likely not return.

I think the most annoying part of this thread is we are closing in on 2 years and haven't really had a response from anyone at Google regarding this yet. The Google provided responses above (last one over a year ago) all feel like canned responses and provide no substance. :/

Since I first commented on this YEARS AGO, reality has changed for many of us. Some of us have family members who are ill and we need to be able to hear calls, but not app notifications. I don't give a crap about Becky and the fifteenth newborn baby she posted to Facebook today or the hundredth "as per my last email" I'm getting... I care if my grandma fell today getting out of bed.

Google, you've accepted this as it needs to be fixed, PLEASE get on it.

Also, please ⭐ star this issue so it increases priority in Google's workflow.
