Jetpack Compose release version: 1.0-beta08 Android Studio Build:

Steps to Reproduce:

add ui-tooling dependency and a single @Preview function not otherwise referenced
compare to project without it (release build with minify, proguard enabled)

result - apk size is 60kb unnecessarily bigger

We're excluding ui-tooling from our release builds as a result, but perhaps there can be some proguard exclusions that can remove most of this impact? Should samples use debugImplementation as a best practice, putting preview functions only in debug files?

Semantics no-op cleanups

Partly in response to lmr's broad code review, I did a pass of
superficial API/implementation cleanup. The main changes are:

- I changed each Boolean SemanticsProperty where false is equivalent to
not being present to take "Unit" instead. This is conceptually
clearer: it avoids questions like "can I cancel out a semantics from a
merged child by setting it to false?" Because "property = Unit" looks
weird, I also changed the style of these to "property()".

- I moved the Semantics id generator closer to where it's used, in
SemanticsModifierCore. I made it internal and an AtomicInt.
(Note that integer ids are heavily used in the Android
AccessibilityNodeInfo APIs so I can't simply remove them entirely.)

- I deleted dead code. Some examples include SemanticsHintOverrides,
a public API not connected to anything, and SemanticsPropertyKey
merge() open method which is never called. (In both cases I have
a different plan in mind for accessibility.)

Thanks for checking. I'm afraid we will need more information to figure out why some of the tooling is being kept. Would it be possible for you to add the following couple of rules to your proguard file?

-whyareyoukeeping class androidx.compose.ui.tooling.preview.ComposeViewAdapter
-whyareyoukeeping class com.example.ClassKt { *; }

replacing com.example.ClassKt with one of the classes that contains the @Preview method that should be being removed?

Then could you please run ./gradlew clean :app:minifyReleaseWithR8 and upload the output that tell us why they might be being kept?

Thanks, that gives me some reasons for why things are being kept. ComposeViewAdapter actually is not being kept, but some other things in ui.tooling are. I guess this standard android gradle plugin proguard config keeps the activity and then we are keeping a bunch of things the activity references

I will do some more investigation, maybe ui tooling is bringing in some other dependencies that get kept

We have now (as of RC01 of ui-tooling) split the ui-tooling in two artifacts.

ui-tooling-preview: Contains the API definitions
ui-tooling: Contains the implementation and can be declared as debugImplementation

This should address the problem with the activity retention.
