This issue is particularly frustrating because the new version of Android uses accent colors on large buttons so prominently. First it worked fine, then it was bugged to ignore your theme and color choice, now we've basically lost themes and are only given extremely limited color choices. I don't even have the option for red or yellow, two primary colors that are part of Google iconography.
There should be a color picker for both light mode and dark mode accent colors.

Really sad to have lost the font and icon settings so quickly after having waited about 7 years to get them (after HTC Sense). Quite a tease to finally build something so awesome into the OS and then to take it all away just a few months later and replace it with mandated pastels and dainty grey/pinks.

Ok then, I guess this isn't the phone I paid for this much money anymore. Not so uncommon of Google killing good features, but there is a custom ROMs to fill everyone's needs. Also making a statement that the new theming engine is more modern and intelligent doesn't relate in any way to features being removed, because it could be modern and intelligent while retaining the rest of functionality as optional. An answer is an answer though, it has been decided to not keep that and we can't do anything about it.

This is absolute bullshit, Google. It doesn't matter how "modern and intelligent" your new system is. It's still lacking basic features that are demanded by many. If colors are to be dynamic, at least please bring back font and icon shape customization.
Current solution is like two steps back, because there are missing options which were available earlier, and dynamic colors are not always chosen correctly. Besides that, someone could like to choose all kinds of accent colors by themselves.

Please get your head out of the clouds. This is not "more modern and intelligent" it is just taking away another option where users had a modicum of control and now that's gone as well. Like many recent changes, Google's all about removing user options these days, which is not intelligent at all. What could be more simple then letting a user select a main and accent colour?? Noo, it's got to be "delightful" as well. Why introduce icon shapes when you're just going to remove them 2 versions later?? Android 12 and Material You are turning into a major disappointment!

Have to agree with the others, dismissing this feature is a really bad design. The greater choice of accents colors and especially the icons shapes are a good way to make your phone more personal. Adding dynamic colors isn't a compensation for the other options. I hope you change your mind about that.

Unfortunately I cannot agree with that quotes, A12 is less personal now. Personalization options are being taken away just to implement Material You (which IMHO should be an extension to the existing user experience, not the complete replacement of it). Material You is great in many aspects, but not in all of them.
Besides that, the color-only personalization would be kind of meaningless to the colorblind people 😉 As well as the whole system in similar colors will be less accessible, even for not colorblind people (like the new Settings app).

What was the point of introducing the adaptive icon spec in the first place if changing the icon mask shape is no longer possible? With this change, all icons are locked as circles—despite the entire idea of adaptive icons being that they could be displayed in any shape without losing their identity!

This is very disappointing. Why can't people customize their experience more? This is why stock Android is going to fall in popularity. There's no reason for people to not have max customization possible on their phone. If I wanted no choices I would trade it in for an iPhone.

Removing the ability to change the fonts is the biggest issue for me. I have eye issues and being able to change to a font that was easier for me to read was a HUGE advantage for me. It was one of the biggest reasons I stayed with the pixel phones. I like the fonts to be small but still readable. I could make the fonts bigger but I don't like them huge, which makes it easier for people to read over my shoulder. Google doesn't care about people with disabilities it seems. Also, the ability to make the theme color white has been removed. This was yet another blow for me since I'm color blind and having all of the colors white helped a lot with my color blindness. So now Google has basically said, "We don't care if you have vision disabilities because we know what's best for everyone." I now have absolutely no reason to continue buying pixel phones. I might as well be using an iPhone now cause I have no choice anymore. Thanks Google for ruining a great phone OS. You should change the name of "Material You" to "Material Google"

I understand that having separate icon (not launcher icon) packs requires additional work, but icon shape is already part of the spec, all you have to do is make a ui for it, which is a one-time cost. Also Material YOU should allow YOU to choose colors, not 1 of 4 presets. This is especially important considering that live wallpapers are incompatible, leaving Material You more like "Material desaturated blue, green, purple, or brown"

How exactly does removing options for customization emphasize Material *You*? Especially because even more icon shapes are being planned, why won't you allow us to change them? Some of us don't want only one font or shape, even if many others are ok with them. I guarantee many consumers will be quite unhappy with these changes. Please consider reverting them.

What- Why? Just why? Material You is named that way for a reason - YOU should decide how your phone looks. You promote the idea of the user influencing their phone's look, but then remove all the tools that allow them to do so. But understand that shapes, colors, and fonts are not just aesthetic embellishment for users, they're also accessibility needs for many. Google, I find Android 12 to be very exciting but the removal of custom icons is not welcomed because despite using an iPhone I intend to switch to android simply because of Android 12 new exciting features but also bearing in mind that there are some features that I would love to try when I get an android device. In as much as android keeps on refining its operating system, there should be some things that are consistent with the platform. Google must show maturity with android 12.

Google, please keep the existing options in place! The ability to make these small changes is huge for personalization and usability. By removing it, you're forcing users to look into alternative methods to do what's currently in the software. This opens up your users to a bloated and potentially malware filled experience, bogging down their phones and affecting their opinions of the hardware and software.

Please let us go back to customizing at least the accent color, I had mine set to a my favorite shade of pink that is never a preset option on any service. It's very soft and doesn't hurt my eyes and I can still see it during the day without cranking my brightness. If it's supposed to be material YOU (ME) then let it be MATERIAL ME!
Your "basic colors" are super light and washed out and hard to see, and on dark mode they look terrible. Currently there are no good options for dark mode that look anywhere decent. Please give us choices to make our phones feel like they are own again.

Last night my Pixel received Android 12: I realize today Themed icons ARE NO MORE THERE !!! Color extraction is nothing for me: my phone is all-black, I use only Black-theme with solid-black wallpaper... BUT the icons Android 12 proposes are not fitted for me...

As an embedded software engineer, I understand maintaining old code is a pain but stripping away features is a garbage thing to do. I absolutely despise 12 so far. Here because changing font styles was removed. You can't rebrand a regression as 'modern and intelligent'. So far as the UI is concerned all it seems that was changed from 11 as to slightly change the styling for most menus (and make it worse imo) while removing features. To put it simply: you changed something nobody asked you to changed and removed something nobody asked you to remove. People were using these feature, now please give them back.

- ability to change the font

My pixel phone just updated, I hate the lack of customisation. I can't change the icon shape any more? Now when I have grouped apps they all overflow from the bubble they are in, it looks cheap and disorganised. I also hate the lack of transparency when going between apps, all of this looks so much worse.

I updated my Pixel 5 only to realize some features I really enjoyed were now gone. So my Pixel 3 remains on Android 11, where the icon shape can remain a square (preventing my icon "folders" from looking like lumpy monstrosities like they now do on the Pixel 5), and where I can center items like the clock and my weather app on the home screen, and where the lock screen doesn't have that ridiculous 2-line clock (seriously---what nimrod thought forcing that on everyone was a good idea?). I don't like the pull down "drawer" as much either---it was much easier to use on Android 11. I'm also hating the way you cannot pull up from the middle "button" to get to apps. It seemed rather random getting to apps, until someone showed me you have to start pulling up from ABOVE the middle button (wtf?) to get to apps. JFC I hate Android 12, and I'd love to go back to 11 on my Pixel 5, but apparently done is done. At least I "saved" my Pixel 3...maybe just stick my SIM card back in it, liked the form factor and size of that phone better anyway.

At the very least there should be an option for a serif font, if for nothing else then for accessibility. Google isn't going to fix it though because apparently they care more about their "Material You" than features actually desired by users, and they probably think that rolling back a design change would look bad for them. I doubt that a resolved user-submitted issue thread like this even gets to high enough levels to make changes anyway. Honestly I really hate the oversimplification epidemic which has been plaguing the tech world lately, companies switching to things that look "modern" and "simple" rather than "useful" and "customizable". Nothing that the buyer can really do cause there's no competition. What are you gonna do, switch to iOS which has even more simplified customization?
My recommendation for everybody in this thread is to get used to the shitty new Android UI and pray that the design department at Google find better things to do with their time than mess up the Android interface more than they already have.

Just to follow up, has google revisited its’ decision to remove the custom fonts and icons options from the wallpaper settings? Would like to update my pixel 4a to android 13 but will not do so until this option is returned. One of the charms of the pixel experience was that it used to give us the ability to truly make our home screens our own. Material you custom wallpapers while unique, is too limiting in scope. Whatever happened to android’s be together not the same campaign?

So I bought a google pixel instead sticking to Samsung. Ngl, had I known that google would pull this, then I would have stayed clear of any pixel models.

What type of Android issue is this? User Interface, Display, or Rendering issue
What steps would let us observe this issue?
1. Open Wallpaper and Style menu via Settings, or from the home screen
What did you expect to happen?
I expected options to create custom Styles to personalise user interface like fonts, icon shapes, different shapes for icons in notification area and quick settings.
What actually happened?
The customisation options have been reduced to almost none. Only grid and accent colours are left, and significantly reduced in choice to only 4 for the accent colours.

Every time
What was the effect of this issue on your device usage, such as lost time or work?
None - device worked normally
Additional comments
This has destroyed a lot of appeal of pure Android and Google phones. We're now back in almost Android 8 era, with little to no customisation options. This should not reach Platform Stability in this "castrated" form.
