There should be a color picker for both light mode and dark mode accent colors.

We see the new dynamic theming feature as more modern and intelligent. A simple and delightful experience that we hope all users can get to enjoy.

Current solution is like two steps back, because there are missing options which were available earlier, and dynamic colors are not always chosen correctly. Besides that, someone could like to choose all kinds of accent colors by themselves.

It is not "delightful" in the slightest and the feedback in this thread is universally negative. A few words picked from the above ~15 comments:
"destroyed, pain, frustrating, don't take features away, sad, killing good features, bad move, pissed, b********, makes no sense".
If you, Google, intend to market "Material You", then let us make these choices for ourselves. This plan is quite inconsistent and actually contradictory....

Citing some of from the Google blog:
From the beginning, Android has always been about personalization [...]
Android 12 is more [...] personal than ever before.
Unfortunately I cannot agree with that quotes, A12 is less personal now. Personalization options are being taken away just to implement Material You (which IMHO should be an extension to the existing user experience, not the complete replacement of it). Material You is great in many aspects, but not in all of them.
Besides that, the color-only personalization would be kind of meaningless to the colorblind people 😉 As well as the whole system in similar colors will be less accessible, even for not colorblind people (like the new Settings app).

Pixel and Google isn't about letting us choose what we want anymore. Now they tell us what we want just like Apple does.

But Atleast Icon customization should stay.
It's high time for google to take on more pixels users who are vary of OnePlus.
But some customization options should stay and more should be introducted. AoD, icon packs etc..
This just makes pixels launcher less exciting. Note that OEM doesn't get afftected by this. It just google and their pixel software experience being hammered.

We get it, Google. Material You is fresh and innovative. And you are excited for everyone to try it out. But understand that shapes, colors, and fonts are not just aesthetic embellishment for users, they're also accessibility needs for many. And taking away the option to address these needs is irresponsible. This is still the platform of "Choice and Openness", right?

Your "basic colors" are super light and washed out and hard to see, and on dark mode they look terrible. Currently there are no good options for dark mode that look anywhere decent. Please give us choices to make our phones feel like they are own again.
Love the work y'all are doing,
Respectfully, a sad man who misses his pink theme

I'm not able to choose desired icon shape (most of pixel users used oval shape, now we're missing this alot),
I'm not able to choose desired color,
Then what's the use of improvement / Material YOU...

Font choice and font size are accessibility features that aren't found in accessibility features.
If they were, I wouldn't be here, now would I?
Just come out and say it already. You devs think this is intelligent, but it's actually just exclusionary behaviour from people who don't think about being visually impaired all that much.

Need to allow changing the icon shape. That "Material You" gives You LESS choice over the style and colors is next level Ministry of Truth type of absurdity. Who's in charge of your development team, and why would they think that removing options would be a good idea?
The circle icons are hideous. That's not my opinion, it's just an objective fact.
Fix it ASAP.

Removing our options to theme and change icons with these stupid balloon like characters that resemble comic sans demonstrates what a complete lack of aesthetics you all really have.
Poorly done. I guess my next phone will NOT be a pixel.
eu...@gmail.com <eu...@gmail.com> #71
Please bring the following features back, and let ME decide what I consider as being aesthetic:
- ability to change the shape of the icons
- ability to change the shape of the symbols in the status bar
- ability to change the font
- increase the number of accent colors back to 8 (just 4 basic colors in Material You - are you kidding)
- colored icons in settings so that one can identify frequently used settings just by color without really reading the text
Nobody, nobody asked you to remove these features. And all of them are perfectly compatible with a mess you call "Material You" design. Btw "You" should be read as "Google", i.e. it's "Material Google" not me.
vl...@gmail.com <vl...@gmail.com> #72
I can't stand the lack of options I have for themes with this update. The new style is absolutely offensive to my eyes and it's more than enough to have me switch phones. Am I being dramatic? Maybe, but I paid a lot of money for this phone. and the customization was part of the reason that made it worth it to me and I paid all of that money just to have my hands tied in the end. Garbage move, Google. I stay away from Apple products for this reason. Even if the options get brought back, I don't see myself buying a Google phone again because I know how little thought you put into your decisions. Nothing bothers me more than somebody that makes changes because they think they know what's best for ME.
The damage is already done for a lot of us but I suggest you fix this problem sooner than later.

is...@gmail.com <is...@gmail.com> #78
I spent eight years on the iPhone before making the jump to the original Pixel. If Google is simply going to strip away the customization and flexibility I switched for in the first place, then yeah, I'll go back. Go ahead and call my bluff.
It is extremely disappointing to see Google going down this route.

I'm disabled and I use said customization to get around my disabilities. This decision was clearly made by abled bodied managers who have no clue about disability adaptations. By taking away that said customization, they are contributing to disability discrimination. This is revolting.
sp...@gmail.com <sp...@gmail.com> #87
Except it's back to the stone ages when it comes to your disabled users. You sacrificing our functionality for your erroneous ideals of 'user experience'.
Description

(Note: It is the build when sending this report. For exact build reference, please see the attached bugreport.)
What type of Android issue is this? User Interface, Display, or Rendering issue
What steps would let us observe this issue?
1. Open Wallpaper and Style menu via Settings, or from the home screen
What did you expect to happen?
I expected options to create custom Styles to personalise user interface like fonts, icon shapes, different shapes for icons in notification area and quick settings.
What actually happened?
The customisation options have been reduced to almost none. Only grid and accent colours are left, and significantly reduced in choice to only 4 for the accent colours.
How often has this happened?
Every time
What was the effect of this issue on your device usage, such as lost time or work?
None - device worked normally
Additional comments
This has destroyed a lot of appeal of pure Android and Google phones. We're now back in almost Android 8 era, with little to no customisation options. This should not reach Platform Stability in this "castrated" form.
