Steps to reproduce

1. Set-up a new Android project in Android Studio, e.g.
   1. Template: Phone/Tablet
   2. No Activity
   3. Language: Kotlin
   4. Minimum SDK: "API 31: Android 12 Preview (S Preview)"
2. Run ./gradlew assembleDebug — note that the project compiles successfully. (See sample project, commit de1be03)
3. Add a dependency on androidx.fragment:fragment-testing:1.3.6. As per Comment #4 on Issue #122321150, note that this should be added as debugImplementation.
4. Re-run ./gradlew assembleDebug (See sample project, commit 2c753d5).

Current outcome

Project fails compilation on:
