Maybe it will be useful to others too. The WebDAV server has also an option to export all Android emulator or device storage. See:

Still an issue with the new QPR (S3B1.220218.004).
My main concern is the behavior of going home to find the next app to split - this is the behavior I expect to work.
In Android 12 to have a split screen was:
- Launch 1st app
- Swipe up for multi-tasking and enable splitting
- Swipe up to launcher
- Launch 2nd app
With the current beta (and I assume also 12L, though that never landed on my phone), the process to have a split screen is:
- Launch 2nd app
- Swipe up to launcher
- Launch 1st app
- Swipe up for multi-tasking and enable splitting
- Select 2nd app from multi-tasking view
So while in Android 12 you could work on an app and then just decide to have a split view, now you have to either plan it ahead of time (or alternatively, have your first up at the bottom position, which is still a weird workflow).

You can't just replace a MultiTasking feature with something that, first, doesn't work, and second, works completely differently. Having both "Pin to Top" option and "Split Top" option to choose if you want to Pair 2 apps together or work with multiple apps at once... So you can.. you know.. Multitask.. I though this is what Android 12L was about, and now we get an update that makes multitasking quite literally impossible.
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #23
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #24
Additonally, the replacement "split top" feature is nonfunctional. It causes the android UI to crash.
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #25
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #26
Android11 would let a user switch apps in split screen mode to whatever they wanted and access the home screen and even an app drawer. Android 12 seems to have completely removed this and users in forums are sharing tips and tricks for how to switch apps, all cumbersome multi step processes. The ability to switch to an app that wasn't already open without needing to completely re-do the steps to enter split screen mode, as far as I can tell, was killed off entirely.
Please restore Android11's level of split screen functionality entirely (or at least as a toggle option) or at least provide us with the reason it was killed-off.

This is far from an evolution in user usability, and coupled with the fact that there's no way to quickly trigger split screen already (without having to pull up the menu by pressing the icon, an extra step) via button navigation or gesture navigation makes an originally seamless multitasking experience turn into one which feels deliberately simplified.
Please bring back the old split screen (and if you must keep the app pairs, make it a subset of the original functionality with the option to turn it off).
Thanks.
si...@gmail.com <si...@gmail.com> #35
you managed to remove a great feature. The new update is a downgrade.
The existent behaviour of Split Screen is not the function I used to enjoy. There is no split screen at all actually.
Please bring back the feature where the user can pin one application at the top and switch between opened apps at the bottom of the screen. And while you are at fixing it, please give the option to split screen in 1/3 the pinned app and 2/3 the bottom apps. These features were already existent in a previous version of Android 12.
Please make the Split Screen feature great again. Now it is useless. Thank you.

This phone already has enough issues and you go and ruin the one feature I loved... This new multitask split screen is so bad. The UI changes to multitask doesn't even look good and now you remove the perfectly fine feature and made it worse.

1. To see two apps, both apps have to be launched by user first. Very short-sighted to limit users to (a) only have access to apps that are currently "open", and (b) provide no efficient way to switch between those apps anyways other than swiping through the recents page that is organized fairly arbitrarily (vs, alphabetical, user choice, etc).
2. Once two apps are shown, the user is locked in to that combination with no way to deviate from that. If you want apps A and C shown on screen, vs apps A and B, there is no mechanism to select this.
Terrible and makes me yearn for other older and competing devices. I have more buyer's remorse with my Pixel 6, than I have had for any product in years. It's a real shame.

With reference to my original comment, I have the following suggestions (some of which are based on comments above) for the Google team to consider to further enhance the current implementation of App Pairs.
These suggestions are based on gesture navigation, but can be applied equally (as applicable) to three button navigation.
(i) Add a long-hold trigger to the pill at the bottom of the screen and/or the divider handle (I note that double tapping the handle switches the top and bottom apps around) which unpairs the bottom app and directly pulls up shortcuts in the bottom half for: (a) recent apps (in order of last opened) and (b) the full app drawer (alphabetical), whilst retaining the uninterrupted running of the app in the top half. Using this method, it is possible to retain Google's intended design of allowing multiple app pairs to be retained as app pairs, whilst granting the user greater flexibility in independently manipulating each app pair.
I believe this addresses both Google and the users' pain point in relation to 'having to constantly recreate split screens' and 'being able to change the app pair after the app pair has been established (where the user may or may not know what the second app is, and/or whether such second app has been opened before)' respectively;
(ii) Add a way to directly trigger "split top" of the currently running app from any screen. My suggestion is to allow the user to long-hold the pill at the bottom of the screen to directly trigger split top. The current number of steps required to trigger split top is 3 (i.e. (a) trigger recent apps by swiping up; (b) tap the app icon to bring up the menu; and (c) select split top) - this can be reduced to one by adding this trigger;
(iii) Add a way to unpair apps in an already established app pair from the recent apps page, via the menu after tapping either app icon;
(iv) Add in the option to reduce or turn off rounded corners on both open apps to maximise screen estate;
(v) Enable the resizing of all activities (?) (sorry if this is already the case, I only recall it is an option in the developer settings);
(vi) When manipulating the divider between the two apps, allow both apps to be continuously displayed and to run without displaying the splash screen of each app;
(vii) Allow more segments for where the divider can be placed (perhaps quadrants of 8, or quadrants of 16); based on my current testing, it currently seems to be quadrants of 4 (i.e. a screen can take up a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4s of the screen but not a custom portion of the screen); and
(viii) Add a double-tap trigger to the pill at the bottom of the screen to trigger the last opened app/app pair. Double-tapping it again brings up the app/app pair prior to triggering the 'switchback'. I note the user already has the existing option of gesturing left or right to go to the previous app, but the second 'switchback' to the original app is dependent on whether the user has interacted with the switched-to app (which would leave the user to consciously recall whether the original app is to the left or the right). The double-tap trigger removes this ambiguity. In the case of three button navigation, adding this double-tap trigger to the 'recent app' button would be the equivalent implementation.
I note that Google's preference here appears to be to retain App Pairs, so without prejudice to reinstating the previous implementation of split screen (which is fine too), the next best thing is to allow App Pairs to achieve its greatest potential.
@All - please feel free to comment, thanks!

Apologies for a lot of the heated discussion in this thread (some from myself), it was in relation to the "Won't Fix" status as the only update after ~6 months which I hope you can see might frustrate the 200+ followers of this IssueTracker.
I'm looking forward to hearing the thoughts of the product and engineering teams. Even if it's an outright denial it would be helpful to hear the motivation behind the decision.
If I could toss in one last comment that echoes most bug-reporters' sentiments here, Android as a multitasking and PowerUser platform is incredible and had paved the way since Android7 in ways that the competition is still struggling to catch up with. The simplification/downgrade of split screen alienates the same crowd that helped champion Android for years and creates resentment when there's no avoiding it (this feature having a massive UI-impact, which can normally be shopped-around, impacts all OEMS and their custom ROMs/skins) which seems very much against the spirit of Android (thinking back to "be together, not the same").

I suggest to have them both somehow possible.
The recent tasks action could switch like it is right now, yet it should be also possible to change the task of each side.
Maybe while dragging, it could offer the change of each side's task.
Is this a good compromise ?
BTW, I starred this because of the terrible rounded corners of the tasks windows, which I'm against both in software and in hardware. This was fixed, thankfully.

What did Google's market research show that apparently went against all of these massive companies' research? Pixels will soon be the only major flagship that hasn't worked around this downgrade. I feel like this is creating a ton of splintering amongst Android experiences as well as a lot of work for OEMs that have identified what their users want.
Please consider fixing split screen or standardizing some sort of edge panel solution. Paired Apps on their own is insufficient and large companies have taken notice.

It's also a strict downgrade from vanilla Android functionality in 11 and prior, and significantly impacts my usage of the phone. Even when not adjusting the size of the split windows, the rounded edges crop off portions of both windows and the larger border between them wastes additional screen real estate.
I like to have a video application open at the top of the screen while freely switching between other apps.
Android 11 allows me to switch between other apps by pressing the home/recent button, and selecting the app I want.
Android 12 requires me to close one of the split-screen apps by dragging the border to the top or bottom of the screen, press the recent apps button, swipe over to the app i want pinned to the top, tap the app icon at the top of the screen, tap "split top", swipe to the app I want to use on the bottom, tap that, then readjust the split to the correct height on the screen.
I am considering buying an older phone that has not received Android 12 as an update specifically to avoid this change.

It sucks that Samsung, Huawei, and (kind of) OnePlus are the only viable phones for power-users now since they have massive investments in their custom Android ROM's. Many other companies make fantastic phones but just don't have the resources to keep up with Google's constant downgrades.
In a world where Apple vs Android becomes Apple vs [3 companies] for power-users, Tim Cook and friends suddenly have quite a lot to offer.

Well I pay the monthly subscription and I still have to suffer through this garbage split screen implementation.
It's gone from a feature I used daily/weekly to sometime I attempt every other month then remember it's worthless.
Just makes me look at my options to move away from the Google ecosystem every chance I get.
I remember when Google cared so much about user experience they counted the milliseconds of delay before serving a search result. Now you're lucky if you get anything relivent on the first page. Google can hardly keep search going and this phone software is a distant afterthought.

So they will milk as much money from the YouTube subscriptions as they can, and entice new users to subscribe.
Later, when users complain about how bad this regression is for foldables, it will be quietly improved and removed as a YT subs benefit.
But then again, Google may find others ways to keep sucking.

Just switched from a OnePlus to the Pixel 6A and I will send it back precisely for this reason alone. I could deal with the 60hz refresh rate and lack of wide angle selfie cam but I won't deal with this bullshit. Samsung Galaxy offers great split screen alternative options. Other OEMs as well.
Ironically, if I were to keep it (I won't), it would just negatively impact my YouTube usage. I will simply use it less but I will never buy premium

Anyone able to test the beta please do.

My Galaxy S3 could do it, and that's now more than an entire decade ago. Google should fire its entire UI development team.

At the start you said "will update this issue with more information as it becomes available".
The only updates since was closing as not reproducible (which is frankly insulting), and an update saying it was reopened and saying you'll update with more information as it becomes available.
No word at all for over half a year and no meaningful word for over a year about a clear and explicit downgrade of functionality.

1) when i split a screen 75/25 some apps will resize in a unusable state (as if trying to keep the size ratio with the phone screen, but this makes the app too small)
2) I can only use apps that are already open, while before i could tap into an empty area and choose an app from the home screen
3) I can't undo the split screen by long pressing the tasks key
4) i can't change the app on the bottom
5) why are there now rounded corners? The apps already have less space than usual, why reducing it more?
I can't even begin to imagine how this was considered a good idea
br...@gmail.com <br...@gmail.com> #193
But it looks like all other devices will remain completely f**ked.

The behavior of the side-by-side app pair shown in the Pixel Fold demo videos does not look much different than the current implementation of app pairs we are familiar with (and hate) in the current Android 12 and 13 - the only difference is that you can start an app pair by swiping up from the bottom to get some kind of "quick launch" bar, and then you can use applications from the quick launch to create an app pair, instead of picking the second app from the "recent apps" view. Its better, but still very limited and will only work for the 4 or 5 static quick launch shortcuts. This ticket is about using home screen shortcuts to select the second app.
I'm currently using a Lenovo M10 (3rd gen) tablet running Android 12, and there I still have the classic split-screen functionality: you can go to the home screen / drawer to pick the second (bottom) app, and can also go back to the recent apps / home / drawer to replace the bottom app with other things while keeping the top app the same. Much more useful than app pairs.

I am more hopeful than I was before given that Google appears to have admitted that multitasking on stock android is unusable on an enthusiast foldable device. Hopefully over the years they reach parity with Samsung's OneUI and the sort and eventually some of that trickles back to stock Android devices. Until then, if you intend to multitask the best bet is to avoid Google or Stock Android devices still.. but at least we're on the right path.

1) You open the app instance that you want to place on the bottom and you make it a floating window.
2) You open the app instance that you want to place on the top
3) You drag the floating app on the bottom of the opened app and it will create the split couple as desired
od...@geek.co.il <od...@geek.co.il> #200
A workaround using floating windows isn't much help for me, because I don't have the floating window feature on my Pixel 4a, or my wife's Pixel 5.
I'm not sure how many devices have floating windows, but on my Lenovo Tab M3, such has floating window - this workaround is unneeded because there when you enable split screen, the bottom part shows the app drawer so you can just open whatever app you want without having to preplan. If you then want to switch one of the apps, it's still annoying but you can maximize the app you want to keep and then do the split screen again. It's less useful than in Android 11 - but it's the best post 12 implementation I've seen so far.
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #201
Works well on Samsung, but Samsung implemented a number of pretty great workarounds to this issue on their own.
Wish vanilla Android got something, but we're two major releases in now. I suppose it is what it is and I'm throwing in the towel and unsubbing.
Really appreciate everyone's help over the months (years by now)!

I hate it so much.
Just when I thought I couldn't hate it more, I tried to split screen a video and browse my other apps, like I did almost every night back on Android 11.
Words cannot describe how disappointed I am right now. This is a joke. You took the most useful feature of any phone I have ever had and just ruined it beyond belief. Gigantic rounded corners, and then not even being able to change apps on the lower half without it stopping.
I have used Android since the Galaxy S1. I have since owned almost every Nexus phone, and Pixels 2, 3, 4a, and 5.
This is going to be my last one. You couldn't even let me keep 11 on my P5. I KNOW that I didn't tell it to update. I actively avoided it for years. Overnight, the phone I loved turned into a piece of junk and I hate it now. I hate the future of Android and beyond that the future of technology. It's all crap now.

<In my test, it is not possible to launch an app in freeform/popup view if the current opened app is in fullscreen (though the bounds are set, the app will still launch in fullscreen). I found a workaround though, the app has to be launched with the launcher in foreground (Go Home). Before launching the intent for freeform, the package of current opened app must be noted then "Go Home." Launch the intent for freeform window, reopen the saved previous app, then launch the now freeform app again. This all happens quickly, you might not even notice it. To summarize:
Get current app (app 1) > Go Home > Open new app in freeform window (app 2) > Open "app 1" > Open "app 2"
Such workaround isn't needed if new freeform window is launched from an already freeform app in foreground. You may try this by opening Tasker in freeform mode first, disabling actions below exept the startActivity then running the main task.>

Additional comments
I use this feature frequently. Almost always my phone is on split screen mode. Now the corners of 2 apps are rounded. It just decreasing the screen space further. It already difficult to manage space for 2 screen. I need this feature to work as good as it did before. How am I supposed to keep track of my train horrible time and watch video at the same time? While switching back and forth between train app and other applications which are not running on the background.
