What steps would let us observe this issue?
1. Open the app launcher.
2. Open any app.
3. Use the back gesture to leave the app you just opened.

What did you expect to happen?
I expected the app to use the same animation that's used when opening an app, just backwards. And, in case the app wouldn't be on my home screen already, it should just use the "recommended apps bottom row". Additionally, in case a user blacklisted an app from this bottom row it should still be used, just for the closing animation and right after the animation played, it should replace the recommendation with a more fitting app which the user often uses in these situations/times of the day/night. The last case that we have to calculate is that some users simply don't have the "recommended apps bottom row" activated. So... In those cases the only way to to catch that problem would be to actually play the current "wrong" animation. All the other cases should use the more suitable, smoother and aesthetically pleasing closing animation.

It used another animation which it doesn't use whenever you have an app already on the home screen.

Additional comments
If you manage to pull off this animation bug fix Android will feel much smoother and coherent in terms of design!

When leaving an app there will still be an upper 20% sized boxed screened image of the app ( leaving ) on the screen that interferes with the screen and all other apps / applications

You have started to address this in Beta 3. Now the same animation style that's used when opening an app, is used for closing apps!

The last part would now be to also give the top row apps of the app drawer the new animation! They still use the obsolete animation! You're so close, Google!! 🤩

Though Android 13 seems to address some of these issues for the stock launcher, all issues noted here are still present when using 3rd party launchers. The GestureNavContract is not sent when exiting the app with the back button nor is any equivalent available for 3rd party launchers.

As you can see in the attached video above, there are 2 different animations being used for closing apps. The first one is the "contraction" animation. At the end of the video you can see the "fading while sliding down" animation. Only THE FIRST should be used system-wide.
To fix the current implementation, you will need to use the contraction animation when closing apps from the "Suggestions in all apps list" (Feature of the Pixel Launcher. Can't be searched for in System Settings.) at the TOP of the App drawer via BACK GESTURE (ironically, it uses the correct animation when using the HOME GESTURE). It should always use this animation and then end the animation by "fusing" itself into the suggested apps row at the BOTTOM of the Pixel Launcher (so it would behave exactly the same like with the HOME GESTURE).

Should the user have "suggested apps row" deactivated, you should fall back to the other contraction animation where the app is vanishing in the background of the middle of the screen (I'll make another recording to show you the animation).

That way users have a more consistent UX .
