Again noticed that this happens when the phone screen sleeps automatically after being idle for some time. If we lock the screen intentionally by pressing the power button. The screen wakes up on tap.

Issue just showed up for me yesterday.  Never experienced it before.  I'm on Android 13 July update.

Just received a system update for my Pixel 6a, however the issue is still occurring in TP1A.220905.004.A2. Most easily repeatable for me by carrying in front left trouser pocket with screen facing against thigh and top of phone pointed towards foot. Have not tested rigorously but after about an hour in this arrangement my Pixel 6a will often not wake up when removed from my pocket and upon touching the screen. Repeatedly tapping on the blank screen sometimes causes the phone to eventually wake up, it's as if it's taking the phone a good few seconds to realise that it is being asked to wake up. More often than not I end up reaching for the power button to force it to wake. Have tried toggling settings for 'Tap to check phone' and 'Lift to check phone' off and on again, no improvement. Phone will only reliably wake upon a single tap on the screen if recently awake i.e. if only a few minutes have passed since the previous use. Restarting does not resolve the issue, I have not yet attempted a factory reset (and would obviously prefer not to). Please resolve this in the next update, it is making an otherwise excellent phone very frustrating to use day to day.

When I first got my Pixel 6a, it was on Android 12 and tap to wake (and lift to wake) worked perfectly. As soon as it upgraded to Pixel 13, both tap to wake and lift to wake stopped working consistently. Factory resetting didn't help.  I ended up sending that Pixel 6a back due to other problems and got a new Pixel 6a.  Same exact issue - everything worked fine when running Android 12 and as soon as I upgraded to Android 13, the lift and tap to wake stopped working again.  Seems pretty clear that Android 13 has introduced this problem.

Also experiencing this issue. Taking out of pocket, lift to check phone, tap to wake or always on display don't come on. Sometimes it works fine, but I think sometimes it takes too long or I am forced to push the power button. I am on October update. I have one more pixel 6a for my wife. She has no such issue. Is it hardware?

Having the same issue. Tap to wake stops working randomly and the only way to fix it is to restart the phone. This started after updating to Android 13.

It's unbelievable how unreliable pixels can be for such a basic function and how unresponsive the teams are to this. It's been more than a year since this is unresolved

I was hoping the October or November patches might fix this issue, but sadly no, the problem remains.  In my experience, the issue mostly happens when taking the phone out of my pocket. So I thought maybe it was due to the "On-body detection" feature of Smart Lock, but I've turned that off and the problem remains. It's an infuriating mystery.

Pixel 6a, fully updated with January patch and tap to work is not working.

Pixel 7 build TQ1A.230105.001.A2 same issue for me. My wife's pixel 7 has no such issues. Generally only happens at night in the dark. May be a calibration issue with the proximity sensor not being sensitive in low light.

the only temporary fix is a reboot - helps for about 1day :(

This is still an issue with pixel 6a. Also, the same applies to lift to wake.

Same issue with both lift to check and tap to check. I had the phone for two days so far. Already it no longer works, I've tried everything except system reset.

Additional information, my old Pixel 2XL with Android 11 has the same issue. Initially I thought it's because my phone got old, but my new phone is Pixel 7 with Android 13. The new Pixel 7 Lift and Tap to Wake functions stopped working as soon as I paired my bluetooth headset. I have since removed the bluetooth headset and it still doesn't work. It doesn't depend on anything factors (darkness, position, etc). The phone simply does not respond to any tapping or lifting motion. Only way to wake up the screen is to press the power button.

any progress? - is someone working on this issue? - has someone else tried a system-reset?     ... so annoyed!! 😡

i've disabled "Tap to check phone" and also disabled ”Lift to check phone". Now it seems that at least the proximity sensor is working(screen switches on) at the end of the phonecall after i remove the phone from my ear to hangup.

I have a pixel 6a and this problem is driving me crazy.

As mentioned above, I put the phone in my front pocket.  If I leave it there for over an hour when I take it out of my pocket tap to wake usually doesn't work but sometimes it does.

PLEASE fix this

The function pick up the phone and unlock does not always work. After a reboot it works fine for a while. I also have sometimes the same problem with the function touch to unlock, that is, it does not work, after a restart it is ok for a while, in addition, this function I think causes the phone in pants to wake up and then I have to enter the pin because there is no way to unlock by fingerprint. Pixel 6a (TQ2A.230505.002).
It is possible to determine the cause of such a problem somehow exactly ?

I've been having the same problem with my Pixel 7 Pro. During the day if I have the phone out and the screen active, no problems. If I go out and put the phone in my pants pocket, a good percentage of the time taking the phone out doesn't wake the phone. Sometimes when I take it out, I'll see the screen flash as if it's trying to activate, but it doesn't light the screen to use. I'm then stuck putting the phone into my pocket and taking it out until it decides to light the screen. As others have said, the phone seems to continue working on this state (Spotify continues playing, I can get a phone call, etc.), but the phone is otherwise impossible to use with a black screen. It usually works after a reboot, but that's a pain to have to keep restarting the phone to use it--and is more difficult as I have Assistant set to activate when the power button is held (which I'll probably shut off after this). Yes, I'm going to yell... PLEASE FIX THIS ANNOYING PROBLEM THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE APPEAR TO BE SUFFERING! I said "please"...

So sad that it's been almost a year with the phone and the same issue continues to persist. If Google thinks this is a minor issue, they should know that this issue has been a defining factor with people who've asked me about the phone. Interested parties who were originally interested in getting the phone decided not to get it once they heard about this weird bug.

is 15 month still reasonable? - what my pixel definitely can't do is making a proper phonecall :/   ....  my next phone can handle this basic function - quess what: it's not a pixel ;)

Friend, Pixel 7a, Android 13, June 2023 Update - constant issue requiring use of power button to wake as noted by all comments by users above.

Same brand/design/manufacturer of phone cases and neither of us use a screen protector- so unlikely to be sensor being obscured or sensitivity related to screen protector "thickness"

Compared our relevant settings for lock screen, wake, sleep etc etc - seem to be identical. Even tried tried to compare "technique" - for example which finger/thumb used on screen and where - makes no difference, my 7 pro pretty reliable, their 7a virtually never works without using power button.

As others have said - it's very puzzling/mysterious and no obvious cause.

Still experiencing this same issue with lift or tap to wake on Pixel 6 Pro. This has been ongoing for some time. It appears that the proximity sensor will randomly stop functioning and cause this. A reboot solves it temporarily.

I am experiencing the same problem with Pixel 8 Pro. Proximity sensor stops working after pairing with a blue tooth device. Tap to wake, lift to wake and "keep screen on when looking at it" features do not work. Only fixed by restarting phone.

My Pixel 8 Pro often does not wake upon lifting either,Plus if it's been in my pocket it takes a while to wake up.I hope this can be addressed in an update or something.

Pixel 8 Pro. I think it has something to do with Bluetooth pairing. Not sure how. I have only had the phone 3 days. Tap to check worked great until I paired Bluetooth earphones. Listened to some music and had phone in my pocket. When taken out, the screen was black. Wouldn't respond to any tap. Only the power button woke the phone. I did a factory reset. Was working fine. Then paired the Bluetooth earphones and the same problem occured. I can't see the connection, yet it seems to be the cause for me.

Pixel 8,tap to wake is not working since Android 14 qpr3 beta 2, today 2.1 does not fix the issue.

well got the same issue, however, tapping the upper part of the screen seems to do the trick, more the right in the upper screen, and then it will work across the screen too
