Hopefully this gets fixed. It's unfair to pay for a flagship 5G phone and only get 4G while other much cheaper phones have both 5G and Volte working out of the box. A lot of my friends are using a pixel phone here in UAE and in GCC countries as well. A lot of them already sold their pixel phone just for not having 5G! I hope that Google takes this issue seriously.

Yes, we need OTA update with enable VoLTE, VoWiFi in unofficial countries. For example, when I bough Pixel 5 in German, I can't use VoLTE and VoWiFi (and 5G) in Czech Republic, Poland. Today world is a like global village, people travel, change job and migrate not only to supported countries by Google.

I get that this wasn't really a priority the past few years. However now things are opening up people are starting to travel again and when they do they'll expect for their phones to work abroad. Google Pixel - a phone that you can only use in the country where you bought it, is hardly a great look going forwards.

Lack of support for VoLTE, carrier aggregation, 5G in countries where there is no official distribution is really shame nowadays. People do travel for work, study, vacation out of supported countries. Than what to do with the Pixel phone? In many countries operators are closing 3G, so to make a call using Pixel you have to rely on ancient 2G... Shame.

Lack of services still exists in A13 Beta 3. It's ridiculous! Will someone from Google answer and explain why are You doing this to us? We know about sharing this kind of issue reports with product teams and developing teams for a long long time, but still NOTHING changed. You are making True Tone technology and all of it, but You can't make such a worldwide IMS technology supported in all countries. I will try to contact a few tech presses or send a letter to EU about these services restrictions. Maybe pressure will do something.

A lot of users are not buying Pixels because these are the only Android phones that do not have out-of-box 5G, Volte and VoWifi support. As Google, you should be able to make the devices more open and help the Global users to use all features on this fantastic device.

Same issue here. I upgraded from Pixel 4 to Pixel 6 just because of the 5G support but that turned out to be a nightmare. It simply doesn´t work in Czechia where all 3 carriers support 5G. What a shame... After all those Pixel and Nexus phones, I´m seriously thinking about moving away from Google because of this.

Yes. I am in Kuwait and all kinds of phones like honor, oppo, oneplus etc. are supported for 5g, whereas 5g does not work with my pixel 6. This is atrocious. Yes this will be my last google phone. It's unbelievable. I bought my P6P in the USA unlocked to use in Brazil. I was using a OnePlus 10 Pro. I love Google products, but to my surprise when I arrived here in Sao Paulo / Brazil my 5G was not working anymore. So searching here, I found the notice about no 5G in unofficial countries. I bought a Phone with 5G capable. Well, next time this should be considered before any google product acquisition.

I also bought Pixel 5 5G in Germany, but suddenly when I was on vacation in another country not listed by google the 5G was not working. I cant belive, that this is even legal to restrict product in EU just for selected countries only. Google should allow this for everyone, because at the time when I bought this phone there was no restriction mentioned that you should stay in the country where you bought the phone and if you are travelling take a phone from different vendor that would also work correctly in different country with 5G, even cheaper one. Shame on you Google.

Same problem in Portugal: just bought a 450€ 5G pixel 6a, only to discover the 5g doesn't work here. My girlfriend bought a 150€ Xiaomi and has 5g working, this is just plain ridiculous.

It even gets worse when a Community Manager says that users should double-check the network hardware if they want to buy the phone in unsupported regions. This is so disrespectful. Same problem here. I work for a German company and got issued a Pixel 6 Pro as a company phone. The thing is I live in Czech republic which - you guess it - is not "supported" country. My company provider has switched off 3G network a year ago. So now I have a flagship phone except I cannot make or receive any calls as the call quality is inaudible over 2G.

I just purchased the Pixel 6a yesterday and connected to Etisalat Network. Surpisingly I see only LTE networks. I spent 3 hours with Etisalat troubleshooting it and they confirmed all is fine at their end. This means that google has disabled it on the phone. This is very disappointing. I see hacks on xda forums to root and enable it, but if this can be done with a small hack, I am sure google can provide an update to do this officially. There may be many users coming from other countries on roaming must be facing the same issue. This needs to be fixed on high priority.

I had to root my Pixel 6 to activate 5G, VoLTE and VoWiFi. I would have been ok with this 5 years ago, but this is embarrassingly unacceptable. I had two nexuses and pixel 2, 4 and now my 6 will be the last one.
Google was clearly not giving a daym about their international users, it's the time we also should stop giving a daym. We're giving them the market share they don't deserve, probably more than their sales in Non-US markets, and we need to stop.
They are trying hard to compete with the big boys (Samsung and Apple) and Pixel 6 was their biggest hit and received a huge backlash after its endless bugs, and now their international reputation is at its lowest and I can't wait to see their phones fail just like their tablets and Chromebooks.

Same Here, I work for AT&T Mexico as Network Engineering Team, currently we are deploying 5G network across the country, and I decied to renew my personal line from a P3 to a P5 and I expected to get 5G and VOLTE swtiches enabled.
We tried to TS this issue with devices team, and told us that Google Pixel, has an PLMN restriction when using Mexico carriers, and disables VOLTE and 5G switches under network config.
It's a shame current status.Wwe need and patch ASAP. or consider changing phone model.

As this is marked a duplicate bug of one speaking to no VoLTE (and not just no 5G) - I will comment on that. While lack of 5G is annoying, lack of VoLTE is not acceptable in my case. There are cell sites in New Zealand which ONLY have VoLTE over them, no fallback. Without VoLTE, you CAN NOT make a call.
These sites are mostly remote, meaning that it may be the only coverage you have. If you come across a car accident, or you have some other emergency, you will not be able to make an emergency call - at all. In this case, if you had VoLTE enabled, you would be able to. Worldwide, it is quite possible that not enabling this has or will cost lives. As the bug not being resolved could result in deaths, I feel that this should have a higher priority / Severity.
At this point in the mobile rollout, and with carriers transitioning to VoLTE, VoLTE is not a nice to have, it is a must have.

I've been using Google hardware since the early Nexus days and live in an unsupported county. I was hoping this would be fixed with a software update but it has been more than a year and nothing still. 5G blocking from Google is unbelievably unfair. Nevertheless, lack of VoLTE is a much more serious issue, since 3G is being cancelled worldwide, it will be impossible to use data while on a phonecall, thus effectively crippling the phone. Google is doing a disservice to its own clients.

Reported it myself already, too. Does not work in Slovakia, too. No 5G, no VoLTE, no VoWiFi. Carriers are not blocking it. Confirmed myself with O2, Orange and Telekom.

You obviously don't know one thing. Now connections are on 3G because VoLTE is blocked. VoLTE it works on 4G. When 3G is turned off, connections will be made on 2G.

Ok here's how it technically works. LTE/4G, is data-only connection. And as it only supports data, no "traditional" voice calls is are passing through. For that you need VoLTE ("Voice over LTE") enabled.
The thing is... GOOGLE IS INTENTIONALLY BLOCKING IT IN "UNOFFICIAL" COUNTRIES (just like they do with 5G), meaning that as soon as 3G is gone, voice calls will default to 2G which is way lower quality and with poor reception.
A workaround for affected users would usually be VoWiFi (same idea, calls passing through Wifi), BUT GOOGLE BLOCKS THIS TOO.
A visual representation for this could be seen on the top-right hand side of your notification bar. When a user (that has VoLTE enabled) browses the web/using data, he will see LTE sign. When a call comes in or goes out, the sign will either stay, or you will see VoLTE sign instead. When a user without VoLTE gets a call (while browsing the web with LTE), the sign then will change to H/H+ (2G/3G). While this user is on a call, data transfer speeds also decrease to 3G speeds in parallel to the call.
In summary - People in "unofficial" countries are fucked the moment their government decides to shut down 3G. Google is basically brute-forcing people in these countries to not buy Pixels anymore/sell the device they already have. No 5G/VoLTE/VoWifi seals the deal.
// P.s. There are some workarounds that include rooting your Pixel and messing around with a bunch of stuff (not for first-timers), but this obviously takes time and includes a lot of risks (both in case you accidentally fuck something up, and security-wise), and as far as I know- sometime in the not far future Google is going to eliminate the ability to use Payment services with rooted phones (for that, there's a temporary fix at the moment, but not for long).

When you get an unlocked phone it must supposed to work in anywhere, so I can use 4g internet in any country but not 5g, it's unbelievable. I'm in Brazil and always bought unlocked phones abroad, never had this problem until got a Pixel 6 Pro, it's so frustrating. Yes it will work in India as Pixels are officially launched here by google but it may take sometime as google will add support for 5g network in India over OTA. This is the case with all handset manufacturers for 5g in india.

Definitely this is a deal breaker for many pixel lovers in unofficial countries but google seems not to care about this as it is not a handset manufacturer company. They have very specific customer base.

Samsung phones are usually best when it comes to network support. Their worldwide official support is best. Almost every network provider across the globe has tie-up with samsung. This is one of the brands which can be truly relied upon when it comes to handsets.The mid-high range samsung phones are always a best bet to buy.

Then I've used an OnePlus 7pro, which was better but the support for newer android versions also went down significantly after a few versions.
Any other options? The way I see things the best option is an iphone but I don't like the ecosystem. I am contemplating on a fairphone. Any other suggestions based on the above criteria, welcome.

Same situation in Romania with Orange,Vodafone operators! All of them have both volte and vowifi available without any special requirements, all is needed is the phone having these features enabled! We have to root the pixel phones to add a simple mobile config file with the carrier to enable VoLTE, VoWifi, something Google can easily do to spare us the need of breaking the security of the phone!

I don't think this is a question of obtaining settings. As described on other platforms, there's a folder in the modem configurations that govern the modem settings to "other" (not listed) operators. Inside it, the configurations explicitly exclude "5G" of this settings. Actually, for Google, it's easy as putting these 2 letters back to the file and boom: phone will work with full network capabilities. So, this seems to be easily to solve with an update.

Really disappointed with this. Just received my Pixel 7 Pro a couple days ago only to find out 5g wasn't supported. My Galaxy Note 20 Ultra that's 2 years old has 5g working well all over Europe. But a €1000 phone bought from Amazon.de DOESN'T support 5G in the neighbouring country of Czech Republic...

I bought an unlocked Google pixel 4A 5d at eBay USA and I’m using it in Mexico, but now that my country trough the company Telcel Is giving 5g service, I Bought a 5g plan but not able to use it. I often travel to the USA and at Telcel they told me that li could use 5g service up there via roaming, but for my surprise as soon as I arrived to the USA, (specifically Orlando, Florida), I didn’t receive 5g signal at all. So what’s the point to buy a supposed excellent Google Pixel 4a 5g if your not able to use it with 5g technology neither in Mexico nor in the USA. Please I need help to make my phone able to receive 5g signal everywhere. Thanks.

Bought a Pixel 7 Pro and trying to use it in Hong Kong. Like all others before me, 5G DOES NOT WORK HERE. I have been a loyal Google / Pixel consumer and this is 100% a deal breaker for me. Please fix ASAP or otherwise will have to return the phone and move away from the Pixel family.

I've been in Finland. And I could literally not use any roaming because of this except for a short period of time. Being in another country, without a working map (search function even for offline maps requires an internet connection), no ability to buy public transit tickets, and not being able to use Google Translate (because somehow its offline functionality, even though actively advertised by Google, does not work when you have no internet connection) really sucks. As someone who will travel through different countries in the future, this would be a big reason to sell my phone and never buy a Google one again, if it does not get fixed.

I'm on my 6th Google device going back to the Nexus one. The pixel 6 pro will be my last. I'm on vacation in Mexico and have no data while I'm in the city of Chihuahua (this wasn't s problem a year ago). It has worked in other cities but not here. This is absolutely unacceptable. I have been the biggest supporter of Google and convinced many people to get these devices in the past. However, I can no longer support a company that can't:
1. Offer a BASIC service that works as I travel around the world
2. Won't give an official response to a thread that is over 6 months old with with over 260 posts.
I'm not going to turn this into how Google has lost their way. But I will say that offering a service that works for a premium handset is crucial. It now looks like Google just doesn't want to do the right thing. I don't buy the excuse of the carriers needing to upload these settings to AOSP, if this was the case then all Android phones would have this problem. If the other manufacturers can figure this out it should be easy for a company like Google to do that as well.
Google please give us an official response either way, and acknowledge this ticket! I know I'm not the only one that feels this way, but you are losing customers over the lack of transparency.

Update: Calling does not work on Google Pixel 7 pro in Germany, on a device bought in Germany, but equipped with a SIM card from Poland - if "Allow 2G" option is switched off. Can't receive calls, can't call anyone. SMS works. WIFI works.

Google will never add the support for 5g , VoLTE & VoWiFi in their handset for the countries where it is not officially sold. They are very clear about this. There is a publically undisclosed legal reason behind this.

Searching online to enable VoLTE settings seems to be going to the Network & Internet settings and enable the "4G Calling (Use 4G services...)". I have this enabled on my phone. Looking at the status bar if I'm connected to 4G and start making a call the icon changes to 3G so I would assume not but I wasn't able to test with 5G enabled since currently I'm not in a 5G area.

I don't like iOS neither custom ROMs from other manufactures so I think I can stick with 4g for now.

To dev team hope to get your attention like all the others to unlock 5G in unsupported countries. With Pixel 4 XL, the feedback all the while was blame the telco for not supporting VoLTE but from root method, the feature can be use immediately. Not complaining but starting from Pixel 7 series , its supported out-of-the-box. This goes to show it's Google and not telco scope when it comes to accessing features on Pixel phone. It is a shame that every phone in the world works in the Middle East (Qatar in my case) while Google Pixel didn't manage to release it and therefore no 5g no vowifi no VoLTE... Excellent phone with terrible experience in these counties.

So the way this works guys, is that carriers have to (Apple and Samsung demand this) test the handset on their network (call handover between VoWiFi and VoLTE for instance) and provide certain parameters to Google (IpSec keys and related parameters for VoWiFi I believe, ePDG FQDN or IP, ...). Likewise Google has to implement this in firmware OR have some kind of faster update mechanism (api / app carrier settings, ...). This process is called certification.
Carriers do not feel like certifying a niche device in their country. Or Google does not want to spend effort. Take your pick. If this would be an iPhone carriers would be drooling to get it certified because many people buy an iPhone.
The lame part is sthat some Android OEMS, with the very same Qualcomm modem and rf front/backend have these settings. Why they are not centralised in a database and used, I'm not sure. Probably you have to certify the actual device instead of just the modem components?

Samsung has these for every European carrier (the odd exception not withstanding) and for every US carrier. The funny part is that Samsung has an SKU for global handsets (EU, Asia maybe some other parts) and an SKU for the USA. You can verify that yourself. The USA SKU has mm wave included. However, even for non mm related features Samsung limits CA (carrier aggregation), and other features (even apps!) if you take the device out of its sales region (or flash it to another region in case of apps).
Carriers want to brand the device, giving "bonus" features to branded devices. Some of these "bonus" features like VoLTE and VoWiFi are becoming more critical features to people. So getting "in bed" with a carrier offerring a handset that works better, is a win win. The carrier gets to sell a handset. Samsung gets to sell a handset and the competition does not work as well (for the poor chaps now stuck on 2G for calling). Quid pro quo.

Do not think that is true. For the Pixel 5a I had to flash an MBN to get VoLTE. VoWiFi stil does not work. You are probably talking about the Pixel 6 and higher (you do not need to be rooted actually). I do not know what you talk about works for every carrier (it might, it's a Samsung modem) however, that surely does not mean the device is certified on a carriers network.

With the newest Android 13 QPR3 Beta Pixel phones 6+ can now connect to 5G network in unsupported countries (at least in EU). Tested on my Pixel 6 Pro and I am able to connect to Orange PL. I also have VoLTE now enabled by default. Unfortunately VoWiFi is still absent, and using PixelIMS + Shizuku doesn't work anymore. To conclude: with QPR3 Beta I have 5G + VoLTE, but no more VoWiFi. I hope that Google will fix it until final release in June.

There was such conclusion after several replies on Reddit in the QPR3 beta post. At least anyone can test it now by sideloading the QPR3 Beta build. Unfortunately it is still beta, so for a Pixel 6 family there are some issues with stability like freezes UI, keyboard etc. For Pixel 7 family it looks better apparently.

Same shit in Switzerland. While 5g, VoLte and VoWifi works fine with 2 out of 3 providers, none of the above works abroad for me. My provider has 5g and Volte roaming agreements with the most European countries, but as soon as I leave Switzerland these functions are gone. While lack of 5G doesn't bother me so much, there is a bigger problem around the corner. By the end of this year most European providers will phase out 2g and 3g. We will end up with a half bricked phone not able to make standard phone calls (which a phone is supposed to do). The biggest problem is that there is still no explanation given by Google what exactly the reason is for this mess. G blames the provider and provider blames the manufacturer. It looks like Google is hardly forcing all Pixel users to migrate to phones from Cupertino or Shenzen. Well, if that's the intention, challenge accepted.

I have recently bought Pixel 7 Pro 512 version and even tough it theoretically DOES support all bands (5G, 4G etc and seems to be future proof with its 26 and 28 GHz bands) here in Poland - to my sorrow and surprise in reality - it does NOT support neither 5G nor VoLTE. yet, which is very frustrating as our carriers phase our 3G.
So it turns out that Google Flagship's users have to rely on 2G bands as if we were still in 90's last century... that hurts both my voice connection and at the emotional level as I do support Google (hence my purchase).
Ergo : I do support adding "as soon as possible" both 5G and VoLTE functionality for all networks here in Poland and all others "unsupported" countries.

I have just tested it and 5G NSA is working for me (on Orange, in Poznań). The phone often connects to LTE (probably to save some battery) and still shows 5G. But I saw 5G connected in Netmonster app. So you probably need to move around, maybe closer to the window - when gain from 5G is big enough to make the phone switch from LTE to 5G. Or use *#*#4636#*#* and force NS/NSA mode only in the debug menu. Good luck, it definitely works (both on P6P and P6a on mine).

You need to manually add a new APN with type "ims" and do not set any bearer (Nośnik in Polish) - leave it empty. After adding that new IMS APN VoLTE and VoWiFi will work again.

that there isn't 5G in unofficial countries, Google management decided that
the best course of action is to send me a follow up every week that they
are "still looking into this issue and we will update you as soon as we
have more details."
Don't hold your breath that this will ever get resolved before Google
starts selling devices themselves in your country, as Google management
don't want to provide any reasoning behind this logic to non-Googlers and
as there has been radio silence on this bug basically since it was assigned.

Even tough Google claims to have enabled 5G for all major Polish carriers*, one of our biggest carrier - PLUS - still does not support it with their n38/n41 band and it is only available within their n1 band coverage (so just in a few rural areas). The funny fact is that the administration of the official Plus forum blames... Google for that problem ( https://plusforum.pl/viewtopic.php?p=281014#p281014 ) - sorry it is in Polish.
So do not worry if your country is still in the void or unsupported - there seems to be more compatibility issues with different Sub-6 5G bands to be solved so perceive us as BETA testers for that 5G connectivity ;)

I find it strange that 2G and 3G are completely open standards that just work everywhere I travel in the world. Set up some APN settings, and everything just works. But ever since 4G and 5G apparently they have invented a "standard" that works nowhere and requires phone manufacturers to collaborate with every carrier in the world to make sure the phone works across all 4G and 5G technologies, that's thousands upon thousands of carriers and MVNOs, each with different spectrum allocations. There's probably more permutations to test than there are stars in the universe. It's improbable but nevertheless true that we have multiple standardization bodies that have been completely unable to produce a common standard that just works across the world. Fire the bunch, I say.

Pixel 5G hardware supported, local carriers 5G band supported, but we spend Amazon's flagship price buying and using a 4G 'smartphone'. Malaysia has a lot of pixel fans, Singapore is located beside us, they have google official store but we don't. 5G is intentionally blocked by Google, even voLTE is missing. Our country has shut down 3G services. When people call in or we call out, Pixel it turns to 2G. It exposes us to security issues. What a ridiculous when you say Titan is the best security chip. Please don't abandon us.

Pixel 8 Pro 5G is not actually 5G, it is not enabled in Bulgaria for some reason. Worked in Germany, but not here. IPhone 14 Pro Max has no such issue. Very disappointed!

I was thrilled to switch from iPhone to Pixel, but I've been extremely let down by the Android experience. It's baffling that they market this as the best phone while providing such minimal user support. I'm frustrated that I'm stuck on 4G as if it were still 2019, and I'm considering going back to iOS if this issue isn't resolved promptly. Not that you're interested, but I am based in Bulgaria where we have one of the strongest 5G signals in Europe....

After installing new update (build number UQ1A.231205.015), the VoLTE finally works in Latvia 🥳🥳🥳. Not sure about 5G, as at my location 5G signal quality is quite poor for my carrier. But after making manual network search I can't see any 5G options to connect, tho my home network router is connected to 5G from carrier "LMT" (It's signal strength also is poor, but gives speed about 200mbps with low latency). Have uploaded some screenshots as an attachment.

In Greece, Cosmote, 5G is enabled on Pixel 7 Pro since December, but doesn't stay connected for long. Every time I change eNb or CID it connects to 5G, but after a minute or two it reverts to 4G. That happens every time, even when the 5G signal is very strong. Of course the phone says it is connected to 5G even when it doesn't, but NetMonster and the Phone Info menu of the device say otherwise (in NetMonster it shows as "disconnected" and in the Phone Info menu as "NOT_RESTRICTED"). I talked to my carrier and they insist that they don't restrict my phone by any way, so the problem is probably on your side.

I'm from Poland staying in Philippines over the winter, and I cannot connect using VoWiFi to my cellular provider in Poland. I had to buy a second device, a Xiaomi 12, just so I could use VoWiFi to receive my SMS codes from social media, banks, etc. How does a $150 Chinese phone have support for 5G, VoWiFi, VoLTE, but my $600 Pixel 7 doesn't? In device binary blobs there is proprietary/vendor/firmware/carrierconfig/cfg.db (sqlite3 format) which contain some hex-encoded configuration for operators. Cannot it be enabled there (and sure reflash LineageOS/etc.)? I haven't yet spent time decoding the format.

What really bothers me is that pretty much everyone that is in this thread should be a brand lover / evangelist that really took some time off to let google know that this is an extremely important matter. And its being ignored for way over an year.
I myself have gone through an extra effort and i've had Google fones all the way back from a Nexus 1 (had to import almost all of them since they didn't even sell in Brazil)... But honestly this fiasco tells me that the Pixel 7 will be the last one that i'll ever own....

Guys, I used to think exactly the way you do; and also posted some comments here before. I used to blame google for not enabling 5G in Malta (Europe), however the operator needs to work with google to enable 5G in each country. This happens with Apple and Samsung too but those brands are much more represented worldwide than Google is (Remember that Google does not sell their phones in every country, and I believe every country that has Pixel phones sold officially, has 5G enabled).
It will be the same exact issue with VoLTE, probably for more brands than just google because it is even more complicated to forward and share call data between operator servers and wifi internet from any other operator. If you do not have 5G enabled in your country, make sure to pressure your sim provider, because they need to get certified with google first.

Google blocks the network carrier, I have to use a 3UK 5G SIM with roaming plan to allow connecting my Pixel 7 Pro with 5G network in Hong Kong, cost me extra $20 every month.

I was planning to place an order for the Pixel 9 Pro XL but it seems like this issue will never be fixed by google. I also live in HK where Pixels aren't officially sold, but this shouldn't hinder me from being able to use 5G locally.
If other brand phones sold outside of HK can still use 5G in HK, then why is it that these pixel phones can't? Obviously there's a deliberate software block in place but there's no official explanation anywhere as to why Google decided to do that.

Heard that Pixels can run on 5G in "un-supported" countries when roaming.
If true, it's a business decision on the part of Google to disable 5G/VoLTE/VoWiFi capability in this case.
I guess there's some convoluted issues tying Google's hands?
Anyhow, I hope Google can come forth and tell us why, instead of having people constantly wondering why and having false hopes, as they sometimes make changes during betas only to have them reversed in official releases.

A bunch of pixel users here in Mauritius. Still no 5G/VoLTE. Come on google. We paid big money for the pixel 9 pro XL and we get a phone that supposedly supports 5G but can't be used unless YOU activate it? Doesn't sound fair. All carriers support 5G here.

As an user of old Pixels, I am still not deciding to buy new Pixel 9 Pro XL just due to this restriction.
I would say, if the 5G and VoLTE is unlocked in the phone but those function will not work well in the unsupported counties, then that's our own decision to take the risk.
