This is not only useful for IP addresses, but also for many other resources. I understand that names are currently used as identifiers, so this request is probably not trivial to implement. Maybe distinguishing between a (numeric, automatically generated) identifier and a (textual) label is the way to go?

Is it any hope? We have migrated our IP address to the server with different role, and now the name of this IP address resource doesn't match its role at all. It seems to be trivial enough to momentary reserve static IP address of the old named resource, drop resource, and immediately recreate it with the new name and the old IP address.

This would also improve life when using the Google Deployment Manager (since it otherwise error's out if you've changed a name of an IP)

Over 3 years to get something as basic as renaming a static IP address. Any progress here?

Yes, I have a customer who has this exact issue too! Any updates or workarounds would be very appreciated!
Description
Issue Summary :
It would be useful to add a feature to Archive existing disk snapshot for cost effective retention and a feature to Schedule Archive Snapshot on regular and automated backup for zonal and regional persistent disks.
What you would like to accomplish :
GCP Users has an ānā number of disk snapshots so that users would like to Archive existing snapshots to avoid incurred pricing on having snapshots and for cost effective reasons.
GCP Users want to have a Scheduled Archival snapshot feature to schedule Archive Snapshots on regular intervals. Requesting to add the Product feature.
How this might work :
GCP has a Compute Engine Snapshot feature in which we can create a new Archive snapshot but customers will not be able to create an Archival snapshot of the existing disk snapshots. Also, GCP has Snapshot Schedule feature to schedule snapshot for regular and automatic backup zonal and regional persistent disks, with this features users cannot create a scheduled snapshot (for archival purposes)
