Just to chime in, I only notice this issue when using the phone one handed. When I hold with two hands and swipe with my index, the scrolling is smooth and as expected, so definitely has to do with certain swipe techniques not registering (short flicks e.g.). I also notice the issue less when I have smooth display off, so might be related to the display changing refresh rates during the scrolling motion.

I noticed that when ads appear in the browser, the scroll works jerkily, the same thing happens during video autoplay when scrolling. Even in the play market, there are small jerks.

Pixel 7 pro, same issue. Small (little) scrolls like swiping with a finger a little do provide a bad ("sluggish") scroll experience. Especially with horizontal swipes. Also sometimes when I try to swipe it presses on the items on the screen and then swipes. Not 100% reproducing, but still annoying

Having the same issue on the Pixel 7 Pro, especially with horizontal scrolling and swiping.
Performing little flicks of the thumb to move items is extremely inconsistent. At times it goes flying, other times it moves a little bit, and then on occasion the motion gets stuck, almost like it thinks there was a double touch or something.
Vertical scrolling is fine for me.

I have this problem. It's a joke. Spend £850 on a phone and it's feels like it's performing worse than a Pixel 3a XL. Sideways scrolling and the app switcher are almost unusable and vertical scrolling in most apps is horrible.

I'm having scrolling issues as well. I pre-ordered the pixel 7 pro and received it on October 13th. Scrolling is not the worst part, there is multiple times throughout the day where I can't touch anywhere near the curved edge of screen and it seems to have dead spots. I can't use the middle button on bottom either without hard reset. Joined Beta QPR 3.1 also

Same here. The stuttering, jittery scrolling is mostly random, but one way to replicate it every time is to navigate to facebook.com in the Chrome browser. Scrolling through the feed made me nauseous. It does not do this on any other browser.

I am experiencing the same problems with my P7P. The vertical scrolling is far to be fluid with evident hiccups easily noticeable with both slow/fast scrolling. This is particular (but not only) evident in Chrome. One clear example is the scrolling of the default home page which includes suggested articles (provided by Discover articles feature) with preview pictures. I can say in general the device struggles in scrolling when rendering pages with "heavy" graphics and with pictures which is typical of social media apps or Google News app. Important point is this is happening even with FHD+ screen resolution (default) and it becomes far worse with QHD+ which is practically not usable causing awful fluidity almost everywhere. Frankly speaking this is quite annoying and for sure disappointing for a device which should theoretically be premium. I hope this is a matter of lack of software optimization otherwise I should conclude it is due to hardware computation/graphic-rendering bottleneck of Tensor/GPU. This last case will be reason for getting rid of the device to pass to other mobile phone vendors.

Having all reported issues on my 7 pro.
Turning on "show taps" in developer options allows some more insight. Sometimes swipes are completely ignored, even though the display registers them.
For example: When swiping between home screens, you can clearly see the swipe is registered as the white dot follows my finger across the screen, however the input is just ignored. No response at all.

The fact that no dev have chimed in indicates that this is unlikely to get fixed anytime soon, if ever. I suggest returning your Pixel if you still can. Most of the rest of us sadly are past our return window and at best might get $5 in an eventual class action settlement in 4 years. I would suggest to anyone else if this isn't fixed in the December update to remind all major tech blogs (The Verge, Engadget, Gizmodo, Android Central, Android Police, 9to5Google, etc...) that Google continues to ignore major bugs in their devices, just like they have done with every other piece of hardware they release.

Samsung had this exact issue with one of their Beta's. It was the screen refresh rate changing back and forth too aggressively. Can we hire a lead screen scroller who tests the smoothness of the phone before shipping products out the door?

I have the same problem.

In my experience, the issue occurred only while using left thumb for vertical scrolling. Scrolling with the right thumb felt natural. Also, this issue was gone once I turned off ‘smooth display’ but that is hardly a fix.

Someone on Reddit mentioned that clearing the cache in the Pixel Launcher app and restarting the phone dramatically improves scrolling. I did this in the morning and then forgot about it but later in the day I realized scrolling was all of a sudden much better for me. It still isn't perfect but at least for me it's gone from horrible to acceptable.

This issue is especially prevalent for me when scrolling horizontally, such as swiping through photos. I found that enabling the "screen protector mode" in settings helps somewhat, but there's still certainly an issue. I think this should be P1/S1 along with the bug concerning the modem not reconnecting automatically.

Everyone, check if you can that your long press duration is set to "short". Mine was not checked at all (I moved from a Samsung device) and once I picked that, scrolling was a lot better for me. Hopefully, this helps some people out there. Its in accessibility settings. Screen protect mode also helped a bit, but I have a glass screen protector...

I reboot my pixel 7 without using any save and the issue seems to be gone !!!
(First boot with my old s10e with horrible vertical Scroll)
(Solution to consider only if you dont have a lot of data to transfer because I Lost SMS and apps that i have to redownload manually)

The best fix I have found so far is to use adb to set the touch and hold delay value to a non-standard value...
For reference, the default settings are: Short (400), Medium (1000) or Long (1500).
I used the following command to set this to 401 and scrolling finally responds the way you would expect on the Pixel 7 Pro.
adb shell settings put secure long_press_timeout 401
It seems like this is an issue with the pressure/force touch functionality (or at least something related to it)

Got this issue with my brand new Pixel 7, google customer service suggested factory reset, didn't help. Now they sent a replacement phone, still the same issue with scrolling. Mainly twitter and reddit. Small flicks does not register good.

Guys I was going to return the phone due to the horrible scrolling, but I fixed it by turning off Smooth Display and then going into Developer Options and turning on Force peak refresh rate!! Turning off Smooth Display solves the issue, but I can't stand 60Hz. Test on your device and let me know how it goes. There's definitely a bug with how Smooth Display functions.

same issue here, comparing to my pixel 5 and pixel 6a, the elastic swiping and horizontal scrolling are really really REALLY bad. Horizontal scrolling is janky and generally just not smooth, but I can live with that. However, the horizontal scrolling is unbearable.

This *mostly* fixes it for me. However there is still some infrequent stickiness on very short flicks/swipes. Rather than smoothly scrolling a small distance it will just not scroll at all or do a very small scroll (a line or two of text).

Same issue. I noticed scrolling didn't feel great from day 1.
The scrolling (whatever the app used) lacks from a little bit of inertia.
Add to that the feeling of cheap touch screen (feels plastic, not slick) and the overall experience is not great for a supposedly premium phone.
This is the first time I'm disappointed by a new phone.

Guys I just updated to latest QPR1 Beta 3.1 build and I don't know if it's my imagination but scrolling seems to be improved. I no longer have difficulty with horizontal swipes using my thumb, and vertical scrolling seems to have better inertia / momentum. I was going to return my phone but I think it's much better now. It's still not as smooth as my S22 Ultra.

Short flicks not very responsive one handed. Not sure if the palm proximity has something to do with it but the palm isn't touching the screen.

Got a replacement, still the same issue. Yesterday checked out over half a dozen Pixel 7 pros with the help desk at the Google store in NYC and majority of them had this jittery scrolling. Compared to an iPhone 13Pro M side by side, the defect was very apparent.

Like I've mentioned before, QPR beta had it much better compared to stable. Now QPR is live. It's better but the problem still exists. Yeah, I got it yesterday, made all the updates, hoped I would have one of those "magical" devices that seemingly don't have the bug but realized that the people who don't notice it, probably just don't know. They feel something is off but can't tell it. I'll return my Pixel 7 Pro and go back to my Galaxy S8. Also those who complain about horrendous scrolling lags in ps and some other apps - make sure dexopt is not in the process of compiling. The way it's implemented now in android is very bad, as it causes massive performance degradation. I've owned a OnePlus device before this and it has the same issues. To my knowledge, dexopt only runs when certain conditions are met. As far as I am aware, the conditions for dexopt compilation are:
1.) Device is plugged in.
2.) Device is in idle.
Those who are more knowledgeable please correct me if I am wrong. As long as it's not finished, you will get horrendous performance issues, especially while scrolling. It's the most apparent in playstore, since when dexopt is not compiled - scrolling in playstore is unbearable. I am talking like 30-40 fps with stutters...

It has no progress bar or anything, you just need to wait until you see "Success" in the command prompt.

QPR2 Beta is definetely much better. Scrolling in menus now more predictable and less painfull. Overall issue should be splitted in two.
- Finger motion detection and interpretation to scroll speed and inertia. (This is what feels better in QPR2)
- Frame drops. (This is what happen at Play Store and bloated web pages) Chrome is smooth if page does not have videos and animations. Play Store also jitter on videos. They trying to autoplay videos during scroll. This cause frame drop and hiccups.

I am continuing to have this issue even after January 5th update. This is unacceptable, how can this still not have been fixed, I still see jitters and stutters when scrolling through pages. Play store is an example and one of the worst offenders for me. Even pulling down the notification panel has stutters every other time.

For me on the pixel 7 pro it is worse with the January update, jitters and stutters when scrolling, I will sell my pixel and buy another phone because 3 months have passed and google has not managed to do anything.

The panels appear to be low binned regarding touch sampling rates and input lag. Which would explain why some devices seem to be worse than others. I have toyed around with different settings in custom kernels, increasing CPU/GPU clocks, using higher priority schedulers, and changing touch clamping values, but the touch sampling and responsiveness remain "lazy". One video shared in this thread accurately shows that the reason the inertia of the scroll performs this way is that the screen does not identify that it is being touched until a good portion of the "flick" is already finished, causing only a very small inconsistent scroll.
Whether or not this issue can be resolved by software is unknown (because Google refuses to be open with their customers about it), but the fact that it is still present for 3+ months leads me to believe that it cannot be addressed on the software front. I have tried each beta and each monthly firmware update and the issue remains in all of them. Right now my new Pixel 8 Pro is just sitting in a drawer as I wait for it to not be frustrating to use regarding basic phone functions/tasks.
Google if you respect your customer base, please at least make a statement on the issue. My fear is that this issue will remain "acknowledged" until right before the Pixel 8 releases, or that the issue will just be buried and "forgotten"."

Google. If you want your device to sell great, you really need to treat this issue as P1 and S1, NOT P2 and S2.
Or if this is hardware issue, you need to admit it. Or are you waiting for class action again just like the issues happened to other Nexus/Pixel phones in the past? Do you really understand how much this is really hurting your brand? I understand this may not be measurable, but as a customer, I am providing valuable feedback to you and hope you will handle this better, even though I have low faith in you.

I had this issue on my release phone. Sent it back and ordered this one and it still has the issue. Done a clean install without installing anything from my old phone, even on beta I still have this issue.
As someone who spends most their time scrolling, this makes the phone awful. Very disappointed Google has said nothing about this widespread issue.

As the original reporter of this, I can quite confidently say that as of the last two QPR2 betas T2B2.xxx and T2B3.xxx that the original issue where the center of a large touchpoint on the screen was sometimes detected inaccurately, causing the content to jump up or down, does seem to be fixed.
If I try really hard, I can reproduce a little bit of jitter by scrolling using the entire side of my thumb. However, I no longer encounter this in normal usage.
I also feel that it's important to discern this from the numerous general performance anomalies that have been noted where the UI refresh rate drops momentarily.
While, I agree these may still be important to look into, the original behavior that this ticket was raised for I believe has been addressed.

It is not fixed for me on T2B3.230109.004.
There is still jumpy and stuttering scrolling on most apps with many UI elements, and many of the elements loading in slower than on my Pixel 6 and 4.
I do not understand why this issue still hasn't been fixed and why my Pixel 7 Pro has more stutters and lags loading new elements than my older pixel devices.

As a last resort flashed android 14 dp2 and the scrolling is as bad as it was. So android is incapable of having smooth scroll on their own apps in their own os while they are buttery on iOS. That's it I'm done!

Its not android. I have an s23 ultra that I bought in place of the pixel 7 pro and no issues. Also regular pixel 7 does not have the issue. I'm starting to think this is a hardware design issue you cant fix with software.

No, the issue is not totally fixed for 120Hz in March update. It definitely improved and got smoother. But you can tell the inertia is just different in 120Hz mode, the same short swipe is registered as scroll speed way slower than as in 60Hz mode.

Just clean flashed latest stable and it's not fixed on pixel 7. Its improved though, with less major stutter and consistent micro stutter. At this point I think the processor is not capable of maintaining smooth scroll, however how meta keep their apps buttery is still witchcraft!

1. One issue that users report is that the scrolling is "slow"; when you swipe with your finger to scroll the distance travelled is very little.
2. there are stutters/jitters/frame drops frequently when scrolling.
You could argue that they should each have seperate bug reports in the issuetracker, because currently both issues get grouped into one in this thread, which might confuse the development team and mix up things. On the march update i noticed an improvement in the 1st issue that i listed, but not on the 2nd. But both of these issues are still present to some extent on the latest stable build.

The issue is exacerbated when wireless charging started or change in use min-to-moderate, heavy-to-low use.
Using developer settings to show pointer I see scroll/touch not registering correctly. Normally it will detect touch when using finger-nail (scroll up use case), then decide to persistently not register then some moments later begin to register.
Have tried disabling any extra gestures or modes (e.g. not auto rotate), lock to high refresh, power save on/off. No improvement.
I've concluded this is a hardware defect. EMI/EMC issue.

The scrolling inconsistency is still present on the March update for the Pixel 7 pro, but I think I have found the cause. The touch sensitivity is dialed way too high, causing inconsistent scrolling and extra accidental inputs. To test this, use a screen tester app such as Display Tester app and use the "touch pressure" test. Even if the screen is barely touched the screen identifies it as a full touch. Even a very small touch that barely brushes the screen registers at least 25% input.
If you use a case with a built in screen protector (the kind with a thick plastic screen protector), the scrolling is much better and consistent. If the touch sensitivity of the screen was dialed down, the overall scrolling experience would be much improved.

My wife has a pixel 6 and comparing both in same scrolling scenarios, pixel 6 is clearly behaving correctly and pixel 7 Pro, the opposite. It's frustrating.

If anyone is still confused about how stuttering looks like, then https://youtu.be/0xm3kv1Esac this is the best example. And this is much worse on pixel 7 expanding to many apps. At this point it is quite obvious it is due to exynos and nothing can be done other than selling these phones to unaware people!

Well, I just tested the Pixel 7 pro side by side with the Pixel 6 pro with the touch pressure test in the Display tester app. I was mistaken. The Pixel 7 pro rarely ever registers 100% pressure when scrolling or touching the screen, but the Pixel 6 pro almost always did when I scrolled. So maybe the screen is in fact not sensitive enough. I don't know, I just know that the Pixel 7 pro is a huge downgrade from the 6 pro as far as scrolling goes.
Devs, please fix this and calibrate your screens. Just compare the two devices with the app I mentioned. There is no reason the 6 pro should be scrolling more consistently than the 7 pro. I'm putting my sim back in the 6 pro until this gets fixed. It's infuriating.

You can see that the screen is wrong with popular Youtube inflencers as well. When they compare any phone side by side to thie pixel 7 pro, you can see the momentum and touch sensitivity is way off. They are scrolling and touching the pixel 7 pro much more often to scroll. I ended up switching phones because at this point, it feels like a hardware problem if it hasnt been fixed by now. Pixel 8 I guess?

I find that when the Battery enters Power saver mode, the scrolling on the
screen gets Jittery. I have used other flagships of Samsung and Apple and
none of them had these jitters in Power saving mode. I believe this should
be fixed at the earliest as this messes the user experience when the
battery is low.

Had this issue with Pixel 3XL with every Android version. Now have Pixel 7 with fully current OS and exact same problem.
Horizontal scroll with any app tends to stick. A firm finger and slow drag seems to reduce severity. Seems to happen more with nested text controls, like code-tagged text in browsers or a table/grid like the issue index in this tracker.
Sometimes the issue doesn't occur at all, or very little, like on this issue page (viewed with Chrome) which leads me to think there's something in the screen content that triggers this, rather than a hardware issue, or OS/memory/CPU type issue. I'm wondering if some webview event races, like the scroll event (horizontal or in some cases vertical) is aggressively triggering. That would explain my experience where moving slower reduces the impact - there's more time for each event to process.

On pixel 6 Android 14 (U1B2.230922.006) and still having horrendous scrolling issues. Sticky scrolling vertically and takes forever to clear a notification.

and I can't close it out. Whatever app it book I'm reading behind the
