I am still regularly receiving reports about this issue, and it seems it has not been addressed in the latest 1.4.0-rc01 release.

Seems like a fairly easy fix on our end. I'll see to that it is fixed in 1.5.

The split screen experience is currently only available for navigation and map apps for the moment. I've tagged this as a +1 for a feature request to enable other app categories and templates to work in the split screen view.
Description
During development of our weather app for Android Auto we noticed that there are very few cars that support split-screen in Android Coolwalk. From what we could figure out in the Desktop Head Unit is, that the split screen is enabled once the screen width is above or equal to 1240px. Most cars that we tested with large 10 inch displays don’t have the split screen even though the screen is wider than 1240px – I assume that it also has to do with the DPI? We put together a list of examples in a Miro Board . We were wondering if it would be possible to bring the split screen into cars with those 10 inch screens as well as we believe it would be a huge benefit to have two apps side by side (e.g. weather and google maps).
As a note: At least for weather apps it would probably be sufficient to be able to show the radar in the smaller area of the screen so that the main focus remains on the navigation app (flip navigation app / main app) (or maybe a widget on the dashboard that shows up when you start Android Auto - something like Spotify / YouTube Music).
