Just to add, I've now noticed that this is in Google Workspace accounts, but my regular Gmail account seems to work as expected.
Update: I am now seeing it in more accounts and more browsers, so it looks like it is rolling out across everything. Looking over my inbox is really highlighting to me how widespread the issue is.

- Chrome Windows, Version 115.0.5790.99 (Official Build) (64-bit)
- Edge Windows, Version 114.0.1823.86 (Official build) (64-bit)
- Firefox Windows, Version 115.0.2 (64-bit)
Weirdly enough, the bug is not visible in my Google Workspace mail, only in my personal Gmail when checking in a desktop browser.

So is this a feature or bug?
jp...@google.com <jp...@google.com> #12
So I guess we all need to separately bombard the Gmail dev team with our individual bug reports. Seems rather inefficient.
Please do!
To report a bug, please use the feedback mechanism from within the Gmail Web UI. Open the Support "?" menu, select "Send feedback to Google," and include logs and a screenshot.

Does anyone know how to apply this "workaround" to an inline URL style so that the images won't be stripped by Google? Any suggestions?

A fix has been rolling out since last week. It is not possible to provide an exact date and time as to when it will be available to all users.

This has partially rolled out to production, I anticipate it being rolled out to the remaining users in the next day or two.

In the normal e-mail view the problem is fixed, but I'm still having the problem when clicking the 'view entire message' link in the footer of a e-mail. Is this problem related or a new problem?

Description
A short description of the issue:
When using a background image style in an email, Gmail is removing the entire style attribute, or style block.
This is working as expected in Chrome Version 114.0.5735.198 but seeing the issue in Version 117.0.5899.0 canary. Others have also reported seeing the issue in 115 and 116.
The issue happens with both
background
andbackground-image
properties. However both are still supported when using gradients, this only appears to be affecting images.A small code sample that reliably reproduces the issue. The sample should run as-is or with minimal setup, without external dependencies.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
style
attribute or embedded<style>
sheetWhat is the expected output? What do you see instead? If you see error messages, please provide them.
I would expect to see the background image still supported as it is elsewhere. If it's no longer supported I'd like to see the docs updated and I'd like it to just remove the image rather than removing all styles.
Please provide any additional information below.
style
attribute or embedded<style>
sheet is a common issue with Gmail when it encounters styles unsupported by Gmail.background
andbackground-image
are supported
