Right now only a very limited number of car sensors are available for use with Android Auto (List).

In comparison the android.car library (which is only available for Android Automotive OS) can access many more sensors (such as ENV_OUTSIDE_TEMPERATURE (Link)

Being able to access more sensors in Android Auto (especially the Outside Temperature sensor) will be useful for many use-cases - especially weather apps.

The same is true for the sensor if the windshield wipers are turned on/off. According to this article google apparently has access to it.
