Unfortunately, I have the impression that the problem is not being taken very seriously here. There are at least 6 entries that describe this problem and some of them have hundreds of users who have reported that they are also affected. If one assumes that only a fraction of users use the "issue tracker", a large number of users are affected. I have also read in comments on videos and in forums that many people have sent the device back because of this problem. What I find a bit weak is that you only get "standard answers" that you should send precise data for verification and if this was done, that you have passed on the problem. I've had my Pixel 8 Pro since the first day it was released, i.e. for over 4 weeks, and there's still no word on when or if this problem can even be solved. Since I have also read that this has already been complained about with the Pixel 7, I would like to at least have information about how realistic a software solution is and I think I am not alone in that. If no solutions can be provided, I will be forced to sell the device again. I ask for your understanding and I would be very happy to receive a constructive answer.

For me i think it started with android 14 (UP1A.231105.003)
Even my old note 20 ultra is smoother than my p6p. Hopefully they fix it soon or I'll sell my pixel and get an iphone maybe cause my wife's 14 pro has always been smooth with nee updates too.

While my experience with Android system debugging is limited, my frustration with this issue compelled me to investigate further.
I understand that capturing traces during Reddit scrolling may not be the most targeted approach for examining application-level jank. Ideally, access to Reddit's source code and developer tools on a Pixel 8 would provide a more focused analysis.
However, my Perfetto trace does highlight "red areas" indicating significant discrepancies between expected and actual frame rendering times. These stutters appear strongly correlated with LazyList prefetching operations, aligning with user reports of jankiness during scroll-heavy activities.
I suspect a few potential bottlenecks might be contributing to this:
Complex Item Layouts: If individual Reddit post layouts are complex, recomposition during prefetch could be computationally expensive. Data Processing During Prefetch: Network fetches or database operations initiated during prefetch might stall the UI thread if not performed efficiently. Despite my inexperience, I felt this information might be marginally better than none at all. I'm genuinely interested in seeing this issue resolved but recognize the limitations of my analysis. I hope this starting point offers some insights, albeit with a healthy dose of skepticism.

All I can say is that it only works slightly better during screen recording. Although not perfect, the HWUI graph shows a reduction in dropped frames. I suspect that element loading and variable refresh rate are the culprits, but I haven't heard anything from Google.
If it's a hardware-related bug, we've lost the game. In that case, there is no hope for a solution to this problem. Google will continue to ignore it...

It's most notable in YouTube app. As others have said this seems to be some sort of optimization issue as scrolling in Chrome does not seem to have the issue.

* phone: pixel 7 pro with google Fi
* app that has scroll issue: google play store, youtube, X, spotify and reddit
seems to be an universal issue with March update, phone has no scroll issue at all before this update.

Ongoing optimizations in performance and power are slated for the next Android release.
These include improvements positively impacting overall system UI jank as well as use cases tied to some Android applications.

There's so much nonsensical babbel In the issue tracker, we don't need Reddit anymore. Didn't you read anything here?
ho...@gmail.com <ho...@gmail.com> #243
It's not crazy to imagine people are going to complain about an issue in that specific issues ISSUE TRACKER THREAD. Complaining about them complaining, especially when they last bit of communication is not highlighted well, is getting pushed down the chat log by the hour, and the issue is marked as 'FIXED' with no clear communication pinned / posted anywhere about that fix coming in the 'next Android release', which in itself might be a ways out from a full public rollout. The issue is SLATED to be fixed, at some indeterminant time in the future. That's not great.
And no, telling people that want their flagship to perform like a flagship in day to day tasks to install a PREVIEW is not a helpful or acceptable solution.

I don't care what great functions the Google phone has, when simple scrolling is unbearably jittery. It's happening in 75% of my apps including Google Play, Feed, spotify, youtube etc and reading the threats on this everywhere it looks like this has been an issue since the get go and on all Android versions, so it will never be fixed... What a waste of money

I hope this problem will be fixed with the upcoming android 15 release. I really like the Pixel lineup but it's really hard for me to recommend it to someone if there are substantial problems like these. Hardware and software come from Google so why is it that the performance feels like a cheap entry level Smartphone. Even mid range Samsung phones feel smoother than my P8P. I attached video where stutters are painfully obvious. Other apps not displayed in the video that have stuttering scrolling are Spotify, the Google Feed, Google News, WhatsApp, Google Fotos (Especially in the newer memories tab), and many more...

Google can't even merge a third party change that adds 2 lines & deletes 5 lines, after 4 months. They can only pile up reviewer after reviewer... it almost seems a plot to prevent third parties from contributing to Android.
Amateur hour every day. I shudder to imagine how bigger issues are dealt with, even across other products...
I've heard there is at least one team inside Google that is all iPhone/Macbook, surely there are others too. This is a reason why the Google apps are better on iOS.
They know their own products' mediocrity, so they shovel garbage for the people, while internally they use fancy and refined iOS.
I've also heard actual Pixel profit is very small, another reason explaining Google's aloofness and disinterest in Pixel. It's a devkit, not a real phone.
Description
* Which Android Developer Preview build are you using? See Settings > About phone > Build number (for example UPB5.230623.006).
U1B2.230922.006
* Is this a regression from Android 13?
Based on reports from other users, it appears to be an Android 14 issue.
* What device are you using? (for example, Android Emulator, GSI, Pixel 7)
Pixel 8 Pro
* What are the steps to reproduce the problem? (Please provide the minimal reproducible test case.)
Open an app such as Play Store, Youtube, Reddit and scroll down in small-medium movements.
* Issue Category e.g. Framework (platform), NDK (platform), Hardware (CPU, GPU, Sensor, Camera), ART (platform), Runtime Permissions etc
Not sure the root cause, but it appears to be either software or the processor clock management.
* What was the expected result?
The scroll should be smooth.
* Can you provide the API document where this expected behavior is explained?
* What was the actual result?
Scrolling is jittery/stuttering. Specially noticeable when the animation movement starts to slow down.
Video recording it slightly reduced the impact in some of the cases and made it less noticeable.
* Optional: Link to any screenshot(s) that demonstrate the issue (shared privately in Drive.)
I've attached videos of several examples.
