In Mighty Doom, which is the only mobile game I play, performance on P8 Pro is good for about the first 10 seconds. After that, it becomes a juttery mess and is definitely less smooth than my P7 Pro.

I'm getting the same. Pretty disappointing. It's happening in some apps, not others. It's incredibly disappointing. If I scroll slowly, it's largely fine. However, when I flick scroll, it sorry of jitters/skips when scrolling stars to slow down. It's hard to explain. It's just a disappointing experience.

Forcing peak refresh rate does not help, jitters are still there even with refresh rate being forced, might be an issue with image rendering as it shows in YouTube music (album cover photos, playstore preview images, google feed, etc.)

I also notice a jitter when scrolling in many apps on my Pixel 8 Pro (especially Google apps like YouTube or the Play Store). Basically I am very satisfied with the device. The apps open quickly and everything in the system runs extremely smoothly and beautifully, but this shaking is really annoying.
Unfortunately, I have the impression that the problem is not being taken very seriously here. There are at least 6 entries that describe this problem and some of them have hundreds of users who have reported that they are also affected. If one assumes that only a fraction of users use the "issue tracker", a large number of users are affected. I have also read in comments on videos and in forums that many people have sent the device back because of this problem. What I find a bit weak is that you only get "standard answers" that you should send precise data for verification and if this was done, that you have passed on the problem. I've had my Pixel 8 Pro since the first day it was released, i.e. for over 4 weeks, and there's still no word on when or if this problem can even be solved. Since I have also read that this has already been complained about with the Pixel 7, I would like to at least have information about how realistic a software solution is and I think I am not alone in that. If no solutions can be provided, I will be forced to sell the device again. I ask for your understanding and I would be very happy to receive a constructive answer.

I have a pixel 6 pro and have been facing exactly same problem of stutter in scrolling apps especially youtube, X, reddit and playstore and even instagram now
For me i think it started with android 14 (UP1A.231105.003)
Even my old note 20 ultra is smoother than my p6p. Hopefully they fix it soon or I'll sell my pixel and get an iphone maybe cause my wife's 14 pro has always been smooth with nee updates too.

I remember when I was with my p7pro when they released chrome 116 fixing the smooth scrolling, it was amazing, only embedds things as tweets, tiktoks would lag, but with pictures or plane text it was PERFECT.

If you don't see Developer Options, go to Settings > System > About phone, scroll to the bottom, and tap Build number until it says "Congratulations!". Tap "System Tracing" near the bottom of the Debugging section
Toggle “Record trace” to start the trace
Reproduce the bug or performance issue
Toggle “Record trace” again to stop the trace
Tap “Save and share trace” and follow the prompts to share your trace, like you would a bug report. Attach the trace (which will be a .perfetto-trace or .ctrace file) to the bug.
Take your bug report as usual.

My backup cheapo Galaxy A14 with 4 gigs of ram has smoother scrolling than my pixel 8 pro. I am outside of my return window and already traded in my pixel 6. This is quite pathetic especially after increasing the price to a whopping $1000 and y'all can't figure out your own OS system. Please fix this asap before all of us go to Samsung or iPhone after this experience.

I am using Pixel 7. I've personally looked for the cause and noticed that when running the screen recorder, the glitching is reduced, though not completely. (This can be seen in the HWUI rendering graph.) My own guess is that the variable refresh rate is the cause of the problem. The refresh rate is fixed during recording, which may be reducing the glitching.

Not sure if anyone else can verify but the stuttering is more pronounced when I'm connected and using wifi. Turning it off and just using Mobile 5g the stutter is almost non existent. Still hiccups every once in awhile but definitely more when connected to WiFi. Guessing has something to do with the data transfer rate.

No change after getting the QPR 1 update. Disabling Wi-Fi or starting a screen recording slightly decreases the stuttering but is nowhere near smooth. I also had a related issue earlier this week, where, when I would open Google Play store and it would show the banner with the top 2023 apps (The one with the trophy on a green background), the frame rates would drop to sub 30. I tried to ask the Google support about this topic and as expected they can only offer a device repair or substitution. The point is that's a software issue ( hoping is not related to the tensor chip hardware). I think the only way to raise attention about the issue is keep opening live chats and raise the attention and importance of an update. I know that's not the right way but with all the info we had given it's the clever one..

I was able to compare the pixel 8 pro to Galaxy S23 ultra and the S23 Ultra is much smoother when scrolling through the same apps. The Google feed, Gmail, Google apps, settings menus and third party apps are far smoother in the S23 ultra. You can see this by enabling developer options and going to Profile HWUI rendering, On screen as bars. Then scroll through different apps and you will see the pixel 8 pro dropping frames. I have done this both on the pixel and Galaxy s23 Ultra and it confirms the Ultra is much smoother.

Today I was having more stutters than usual and Whatsapp and Revolut were even crashing, just by scrolling down slowly after a few stutters the app would just close.
I had to restart the phone and afterwards it was a bit better and the crashes stopped, but the stutters are still there. Please let us know if this issue is being investigated.

This issue is still an issue and is the reason I returned the phone and I do go out my way to ensure people are aware of this issue before buying the phone, because if there is one thing a phone company needs to get right, it's the performance of the OS, especially the scrolling. If you cannot get scrolling right, doesn't leave much hope for much else.

While my experience with Android system debugging is limited, my frustration with this issue compelled me to investigate further.
I understand that capturing traces during Reddit scrolling may not be the most targeted approach for examining application-level jank. Ideally, access to Reddit's source code and developer tools on a Pixel 8 would provide a more focused analysis.
However, my Perfetto trace does highlight "red areas" indicating significant discrepancies between expected and actual frame rendering times. These stutters appear strongly correlated with LazyList prefetching operations, aligning with user reports of jankiness during scroll-heavy activities.
I suspect a few potential bottlenecks might be contributing to this:
Complex Item Layouts: If individual Reddit post layouts are complex, recomposition during prefetch could be computationally expensive. Data Processing During Prefetch: Network fetches or database operations initiated during prefetch might stall the UI thread if not performed efficiently. Despite my inexperience, I felt this information might be marginally better than none at all. I'm genuinely interested in seeing this issue resolved but recognize the limitations of my analysis. I hope this starting point offers some insights, albeit with a healthy dose of skepticism.

I got my hands on a OnePlus 12 and the difference was night and day when it comes to scrolling... How can a company with less resources than google can optimize better their phones? I want my Pixel to be as good as that phone. My old Pixel 7 pro was fine when on Android 13. What happened?

I think the time for being patient and hoping Google will do the right thing with basic bug reports is past. We should probably start considering sharing this issue tracker link, as well as videos of the issue with prominent tech reviewers and outlets. Get the word out and hopefully have them put some public pressure on Google to get this sorted out. MKBHD, Android Police, etc. would probably be good starts.

Even after the March update, scrolling on the Pixel 7 is still jerky in most apps, especially "Inoreader". I doubt if you are checking the bug report properly, and it is taking up space on Google Drive. Is it okay to delete it...?
All I can say is that it only works slightly better during screen recording. Although not perfect, the HWUI graph shows a reduction in dropped frames. I suspect that element loading and variable refresh rate are the culprits, but I haven't heard anything from Google.
If it's a hardware-related bug, we've lost the game. In that case, there is no hope for a solution to this problem. Google will continue to ignore it...

My Pixel 8 Pro suffers from the same problems: In some apps the scrolling is plagued with noticeable stuttering. For me it's most prevelant in Youtube, Playstore, Google Keep and since the March update pulling down the notification bar lags as well.

After March feature drop, UI elements have been severely impacted by frame rate drops. Lock screen is extremely laggy, appears to be sub 60hz. Anything to do with the notification drop down is also extremely choppy with the refresh rate appearing to be incredibly low. Bug report attached.

Like others have pointed out, it's definitely an optimization issue. Disabling 120hz basically fixes the random frame drops in play store and makes things more consistent, even if it's overall choppier because it's 60hz.
Also guys kernel level issues like this is not easy to fix, I'm sure it'll get fixed eventually... I hope.

It's not even consistent in the same app. YouTube music, for example, stutters horribly on the home page but smooth as butter on a long playlist.
Not sure if anyone would know the difference between the two screens there. I assume the homepage might be using some UI elements that are not on a playlist.

It's most notable in YouTube app. As others have said this seems to be some sort of optimization issue as scrolling in Chrome does not seem to have the issue.

If we really have to wait till August or longer for this to be fixed...well, it's seriously going to impact my choice next time I purchase a smartphone. That's going to be ~10 months of this phone not performing how it should just scrolling around SYSTEM apps, much less the third party apps affected by this. Utterly ridiculous. And who's to say this won't happen again? This isn't even the first time Google has screwed up, pulled a Samsung and degraded the day to day performance of one of their phones with bad software updates.

Pixel 7 owner, the scrolling problem occurs in the smartphone home by scrolling down the notifications menu (not always but still often) and also with apps like WhatsApp where scrolling is often not fluid, especially when you click on highlighted messages . The problem, however, always arises when the Pixel is under direct sunlight and pushes the brightness to the maximum... in this case the Pixel 7 becomes the feast of micro lag and the problem is only solved by manually decreasing the brightness

P8p (15-beta2): It's better but still not perfect. Sometimes it loses a few frames in native apps, but the worst is in Reddit and Twitter (X) app. I also have a few apps that still look terrible - SlimSocial for example. For me the bug has not been fully resolved!

I have the same identical problem. I've upgraded from pixel 6 pro and it feels like a downgrade because of this stuttering during scrolling. In particular I can see this sort of lag and stutter during navigation in youtube, play store, instagram, reddit and even in the setting apps. The phone is brand new.

I used my OnePlus 7 Pro (Snapdragon 855) for more than 5 years and didn't notice any lags in Reddit or Twitter apps at all. Recently, for various reasons, I had to switch to a Pixel 8 Pro and, oh my god... I noticed stutters on a fresh phone on the second day. Even the Play Store application stutters during scrolling, not to mention apps like Reddit, where it's quite unbearable. I couldn't believe it at first, but I compared the Pixel 8 Pro head to head with my almost 5-year-old phone and was literally shocked at how smooth the old phone was and how bad the new one performed. I mean, isn't it quite unacceptable for a $1000 phone produced by the company that makes the OS itself? I hope they'll fix it with Android 15 because I really like the stock Android feel and the phone's design overall. If not, I'll probably switch to another company as soon as I can.

I think it's far more likely that the poor performance is down to Google attempting to get half decent battery life out of these abysmal Tensor SoC's, at the cost of fluidity during normal use. Likely a bit of incompetence sprinkled in there as well. They never should have dropped Snapdragon. Tensor is plain crap honestly.

I'm so disappointed by the Pixel 8 Pro and wish I had returned it in time and not wasted the month switching over. I switched from my 2yr old Galaxy S22 Ultra after the screen broke for a 2nd time (each repair costing €400)

I really like the Pixel lineup but it's really hard for me to recommend it to someone if there are substantial problems like these. Hardware and software come from Google so why is it that the performance feels like a cheap entry level Smartphone. Even mid range Samsung phones feel smoother than my P8P. I attached video where stutters are painfully obvious. This stutter is (unsurprisingly) still present in the current A14 build on the new Pixel 9 Pro XL...that said, I left the phone to charge fully for a few hours on my 3rd day with it, and when I picked it up, the stutter was gone. Play Store was perfectly smooth when I opened it and scrolled, YouTube was as well. Even Twitter and Reddit were better (not perfect, but as good as I've ever seen them on an Android device). It stayed this way for almost two days, then I restarted to apply another little software update, and it hasn't quite gone back to being that smooth since.
I mention this because my 8 Pro was never this smooth. Not once in the entire year of ownership...this variability is still highly annoying, but it at least gives me a glimmer of hope that this can be solved. Whether or not Google will fully nail it down, and when though....

is there actually any Google employee working on this issue, why do Pixel phones stutter and jitters so much when scrolling on social media apps like reddit, twitter, play store, Gmail and YouTube. Can you not do the high refresh screen well? Google makes the tensor chips themselves and they can't optimize it like iOS for smoother scrolling across apps? I am on Android 15 and the issue still isn't fixed across multiple pixel devices. Can you please pay more attention to this on Android 16 than any other thing? Infact the whole android 16 should just be attention to details across apps and the whole UI. Google can't even merge a third party change that adds 2 lines & deletes 5 lines, after 4 months. They can only pile up reviewer after reviewer... it almost seems a plot to prevent third parties from contributing to Android.

I've heard there is at least one team inside Google that is all iPhone/Macbook, surely there are others too. This is a reason why the Google apps are better on iOS.
They know their own products' mediocrity, so they shovel garbage for the people, while internally they use fancy and refined iOS.
I've also heard actual Pixel profit is very small, another reason explaining Google's aloofness and disinterest in Pixel. It's a devkit, not a real phone.

Scrolling is jittery/stuttering. Specially noticeable when the animation movement starts to slow down.
Video recording it slightly reduced the impact in some of the cases and made it less noticeable.
