Yes please :) Along with a more specific definition of how the Popular Times are determined (how much history? done by mobile device activity? check ins?)
je...@gmail.com <je...@gmail.com> #3
Making popular times available by day of the week would be awesome
r2...@gmail.com <r2...@gmail.com> #4
It already is Jeffrey, you can toggle by day on mobile or desktop
ca...@gmail.com <ca...@gmail.com> #6
@r22, I think Jeff is referring to the ability to split popular times by day of week in the information released by the API, not the currently existing web GUI.
Maybe the info appears as a nested object? e.g. "popular times" > "day of week" > "hour of day" > traffic count

We only know that's it's been added as an enhancement request. As Brett said above (https://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=8581#c55 ), this is no guarantee it will be implemented, and they don't discuss product road maps externally. :(

please add this to the maps api, especially since the data is now real-time, this could be very useful for an app idea I have
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #98
Yes , even we are looking for the same to be used. With Real time being launched , this is a must in the google api!!
ru...@gmail.com <ru...@gmail.com> #99
Just read an article about real time popular times and wished for an api. Now too am I here with the throngs pleading for the api to be made hastily. I would like to see an actual number also, so that I could say if one place was more popular than another overall. Or if that is asking too much which it very well may, even a metric like a representational piece of data would suffice. Thanks.

mi...@utsa.edu <mi...@utsa.edu> #103
It would be fabulous to have an API that allowed retrieval of (suitably anonymized) visitor data over long periods, but I'm not holding my breath for it. How about something as simple as a "tooltip" that shows the magnitude of each bar in the frequency graphs across the days? Right now I'm counting pixels to calculate relative frequencies, which is a bit imprecise.

This data would enable a tremendous realm of possibilities for
technically-minded folks in the urban planning space!
While I know that Google's data science team has done a lot of really
awesome analytical work around this data already, I hope that their
philanthropic leanings eventually persuade them into releasing this data as
part of a public-facing API.
On a related note - if any of the Google data scientists would be
interested in talking further about how some of this data may be able to be
leveraged for the public good, I'd definitely be up for a chat:

Turning off notifications won't allow us to see when something useful is actually posted by Google instead of these garbage +1 posts.
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #226
This feature would really come in handy in many apps, please make an API.
bu...@gmail.com <bu...@gmail.com> #227
This is a public post. I don't think someone saying "please don't comment" is going to change anything. You're going to get emails no matter what. Add it to your favorites and check back every day

I'm thinking of creating an API for returning how busy a place is relative to the total population of that week at any given time of any day of the week for places available on google maps.
So it'll just return the population at given time divided by the total population of that week.
Basically just a more accessible version of the current popular times graph given by Google maps.
Anyone interested?

This feature and data freely available would help In city management, urban planning and design, internet of things and the development of the future of smartness of cities...in the widest sense possible.
I am (manually) using these data already but have a very clear idea of how this could contribute positively to many and potentially convert And monetise for google.
I am involved in smart cities projects globally And this could be a good test bed. Interested in a chat ?Happy to discuss .
Thanks,

As a developer and someone who is also interested in people making cities smarter, I think this issue should be 'bumped up' to a higher priority. I'd be interested in talking with someone to see what alternatives are available or if this is available in a different format.
Even if in relative form (i.e. 0-23 hours ranked 1-100 in popularity on 0-6 days of the week), it would be very helpful.
Thank you.

API should be able to request data for the following
1. Starting point using actual location or at least five-digit ZIP code center point
2. Range using defaults for driving (15 miles for urban, 25 miles for suburban, and 50 miles for rural) and walking (up to 300 feet, 1000 feet, 5,280 feet)
3. Type of business (restaurant, bar, cookie shop, department store, etc)
API should return
1. Businesses (latitude and longitude or address) within a range (use five-digit ZIP code center point or physical location)
2. Expected number of people by hour or every half hour
3. Expected duration of stay
Others please chime in.

RE: #243... YES! I am very interested. I've been looking for a viable option for real-time or near-real-time data for location crowd density. If we could get this through Google's API, that would be fantastic but don't think they are going to release that feature anytime soon. So if anyone has a viable and cost-effective alternative, please let me know. Thanks!
