Currently, when the static maps API returns an image near the equator, the picture covers a much larger area than a corresponding image from a more extreme latitude. (Because the map data uses a mercator projection.)

If a developer wants to provide a map that shows terrain at a specific scale, they have to use the zoom function to compensate for the above effect - which demands a bunch of math and can't support fractional values. It seems like Google should provide a simple way to just request maps at a given scale.
