Uninstalling all Messages App Updates or deleting Cache and Data temporarily fixes this, but you can see the name revert back to just a number when a few new SMS messages were received.
This is NOT (!) intended behavior, as this is working just fine in the dialer app, as it should! Even if it was, it'd be an an absolutely horrible design decision.

Rolling update starting today so people may begin to see the fix soon via an update to the messaging app. I haven't seen it yet though.

I can confirm it is NOT fixed for me, running the same Messages version (20250122_01_RC00). Clearing data/cache resolves it temporarily (as has always been the case) but it does not last past a few hours. I am on Build BP11.241210.004 (15 QPR Beta 3) and November 1, 2024 Google Play system (which is the latest available to me).

We can get it working but then it breaks again. (we have almost 600 staff and need a solution)
How we recreate the bug:
1. Enroll a Samsung or Pixel into Intune using Intune Company Portal. This will create a work profile.
2. Install Outlook and sync contacts via the Work profile. You'll see the contacts from the personal profile and can call them from the phone app too.
3. Search contacts from the messages app and it will show "work profile contacts" at the bottom (clearly showing the app can see the contacts)
4. Chats with work profile contacts will show the numbers instead of their name, although, some contacts may work but will eventually fail after a few days.
How to temporarily fix the bug
1. Install the messages app on the work profile
2. Disable updates for the messages app on BOTH the work and personal app store.
3. Uninstall the messages app from the work profile
4. Open the messages app and it will ask which account you want to use
5. The work profile contacts will have their names again with the work profile symbol - hurrah!
6. This will stop working after a few hours / after a few days and will show only their number again.
7. If you open the contacts list then click the message button to send them a message then it will display their name at the top of the existing chat, however when returning to the messages app it will only show their number.
Our current solutions / work arounds:
a. Buy a Samsung and use Samsung messages instead of Google messages. Bin the Pixel.
b. Buy an iPhone. Bin the Pixel.
c. Wait for Google to finally fix the problem

Frustrated with the recurring issue and the data-clearing workaround (which unfortunately resets all personal notification settings), I discovered a temporary solution. While not ideal, this workaround at least displays a name instead of just the phone number:
1. Access your device's Gallery and select an image.
Choose "Share" and select "Share with Google Messages."
2. Add the recipient's phone number directly, without selecting them from the recent conversations list.
3. Once the image appears in the draft field, exit without sending. This usually saves the contact name.
4. You can then delete the draft, and the contact name should remain associated with the number (at least for the past three months).
However, this workaround has a drawback: it associates the phone number with a Google account, displaying their profile picture and name and no briefcase.
Google needs to address this issue.

After the restart, I need to again do App Info > Storage > clear all storage, for the names to be picked up again.
tk...@gmail.com <tk...@gmail.com> #46
Only issue I have for now is that for the workside contacts, when starting a new text thread (messages app is on the personal side) and searching by name, for people with multiple phone #s in their contact, the attribute showing what type of phone number you are selecting from (home, work, mobile, fax etc) - that attribute does not show, unlike for personal contacts where it does show. With all the contact's numbers showing up when searching by name but w/o the type attribute displaying, it makes a little hard to start a thread knowing you have selected the cell # from the contact list. (w/o having memorized them all). This may be an old issue re-surfacing not related to the names not showing up - I do not recall what the experience was a year ago on this matter.
em...@gmail.com <em...@gmail.com> #47
is to look them up in the phone app and then select the contact and pick
"Message" in the menu options (Add Contact/Message/History). That's what I
have been doing all along just because it works. :)

I looked through the messages and the most recently send and received messages were all RCS. When I cleared the storage, though and went back to those same conversations, the RCS indicator had disappeared and the messages now all show as MMS.

Raised this via in-app Feedback for the last few Beta releases. Suspect that avenue may get more traction as it should go back to the specific app team quicker and attaches helpful system info in the report. Suggest everyone commenting/following this issue also submit feedback within the Google Message app if you haven't already.
My suspicion is that a server side enabled update causes this issue to reappear. I've noticed that whenever the Google Messages in-app settings show Gemini and Dual SIM RCS that issue occurs and work profile contacts don't display in messages. After I clear the app storage and the issue is gone I don't have those features available in the app settings.
Can easily reproduce the issue using the below steps:
- Clear 'Storage' for Google Messages app
- Open Google Messages app and click through the Google Profile setup message
Observe the issue isn't present. Work Profile contact names correctly appear on message threads
- Navigate to Settings and observe that there is no setting for 'Gemini in messages' and that RCS Chats says that 'RCS chats aren't available for this device'
- Wait around 10 minutes (device left idle)
- Swipe away Google Messages from recent apps or force stop app
- On re-open of Google Messages app you will see 'Setting up RCS chats' message. Open settings and 'Gemini in messages' option is not present and RCS Chats setting only shows one SIM
Observe the issue isn't present. Work Profile contact names correctly appear on message threads
- Wait another 5 minutes (device left idle)
- Swipe away Google Messages from recent apps or force stop app
- On re-open of Google Messages app the issue is now present and work profile contact names do not appear, only their phone numbers.
Observe the issue IS present and settings now shows 'Gemini in messages' option and RCS Chats shows both SIM cards
Just used the above steps to trigger the issue on the latest Messages beta version (messages.android_20250218_01_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic)
I've done this now dozens of times and consistently observe some correlation between issue occurring and the enabling of some server-side enabled feature. Based on what I can see changing it appears to be related to 'Gemini in messages' or Dual SIM RCS server-side enabled features. But it could easily be some other server-side feature that doesn't have a noticeable UI change.
For one test I did disable the secondary SIM card to see if I could narrow down issue further. The issue occurred the exactly the same with only one SIM present. Not sure if that actually tells us anything though. Not sure if everyone else commenting with issue have dual SIM or not.
