In API level 29 and above, I used AppCompatTextView in the layout XML and set android:textFontWeight=900, but it didn't work. Using TextView also didn't work because the AppCompat theme casts TextView to AppCompatTextView. So, I used a CustomTextView that extends TextView, and in the layout XML, it worked.
