Hi,
Any status update for this bug?

While I'd like to see this, it'd be a huge drain on the battery I'd imagine

I abandoned my work on this feature as I no longer use any IMAP servers. That said,
to respond to jouvask...@gmail.com, this design is consistent with all other push
services on Android devices, including Google sync (Gmail, Calendar, etc) and the
Exchange support on HTC handsets and also the native Exchange support in the Email app
on Eclair. While each persistent TCP connection does introduce overhead, the exact
amount created by an efficient implementation is quite small.

A fork of the Email client (K9) introduce this feature, any chances to get it merged
back into the official client?
back into the official client?

It isn't. Using K9 (which supports imap idle) and it does not drain bat.
But the email app should also support two stage deletion (imap) of e-mails instead
of just purging to a trash folder.

I would like to see that feature working as well.

Can't believe that android email app does not support this!

Push email/IMAP IDLE is one of the features of the "Lemonade Profile", which is a set of protocols and mandatory extensions which provides email access to diverse environments, including mobile handsets and other resource constrained devices. It is the product of an IETF Working Group, and is largely based on pre-existing specifications, including IMAP and the Message Submission profile of SMTP. It has been published as RFC 5550.
LEMONADE-enabled functionality (like push email, forward without download and efficient re-connection and synchronisation) has been designed to maximise utility whilst minimizing bandwidth usage (and therefore costs) and provide a better user experience through performance efficiencies.
While IMAP IDLE discussion definitely belongs here, I have filed a bug for full Lemonade support here:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=9698
so that this bug does not gain clutter relating to these (related) points.

I too would love to see this feature implemented sometime in the near future.
be...@gmail.com <be...@gmail.com> #11
i'd love to see this feature in the internal Mail-Client.
I think, with the Googlemail Accounts it doesn't do anything else, right?
Would be wonderfull to be able to use the own Mailserver or several Mail-Providers outa there.

Pretty sure this feature request is dead, but so there are no regrets...

I would also like to see this feature. thanks!

It sure would be a great great feature.
sh...@gmail.com <sh...@gmail.com> #15
Use K9 application for email till then. It supports IMAP IDLE.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #16
I would've expected that Android 4.0 would've supported IMAP IDLE by now. I really want to use the stock app, because its so much nicer but not having IMAP IDLE is kind of a big no-no.
ar...@gmail.com <ar...@gmail.com> #17
Please add support to IMAP-IDLE

As far as I know, Lollipop does not include default email app. Instead, Gmail does support POP/IMAP accounts, but there is no IMAP IDLE support. Shouldn't it be included in Gmail now?
Description
from other e-mail providers that support it. Microsoft Exchange, for
instance, does support this extension and corporate users could use this as
a crutch until proper Exchange support is introduced at some point.
I have begun work in my local repository to add this support, and filed a
bug here in case others are working on this issue simultaneously.
