Current Icons are just far too small.
People are always asking why my caller ID pictures are so tiny.
Big turn off to some.
Much bigger Caller ID screen is a must. Apps that have tried get cut off by Google
sync. So even efforts by devs are getting hampered.

The contact pictures should stay at whatever resolution the user originally sets them with! I now try to make all
my contact pictures 480x480 to comply with the full width of my Motorola Droid. I don't want Google or my
Droid resizing these for me. Please at least make this something that is prompted if the phone is going to resize
the picture. For instance, if you supplied a 1000x1000 contact picture, Android would say "Resize contact
picture to 200x200?" with the options for "Yes", "No", "Custom Size". That would be awesome.

The contact pictures that google allows are WAY to small. I have an iPhone, and use
the Facebook application to sync facebook profile pictures with the contact photos on

96x96 and the new pictures are synced back to my phone; as a result, the photos appear extremely pixelated and low quality. Google, please fix this! Allow larger, fullscreen

If google won't fix their sync api to support higher res pics, android should have
the option to override inward syncing of contact pics & the ability to store custom
res contact pics on the phone or sdcard. In other words, pics are stored locally at
higher resolution; contacts, including pics, can sync upto gmail; downward syncing
of all contact fields also can be enabled, but a config option allows downward
syncing of contact pics to be suppressed if a higher res pic already exists on phone.
This seems a more practical approach than waiting for google to change their api.
Support for this improvement within HTC's own dialler too would be nice, seeing as
I'm using that ;-)

I'm no programmer, but this issue seems like an easy fix (and an important one too).
The iPhone's contact photo utilizes the entire screen. Why can't Android do it also?
The picture is so small that it's useless.
The average human will focus in on pictures before text. Since the pic is so small,
it takes longer to figure out who's calling even though the name is written right
under it.

"Howdy partners,
I agree that crisper contact images would be a very nice addition to the call experience. The team working to improve the Android Contacts app is aware of this request and will work to fix it in the future. Thanks for the feedback, I'll see you around the forum.
Cordially,

Hopefully this means that it will be fixed soon. It's really disappointing to have such a great display on my new HTC EVO and then see such *ugly* pictures whenever someone calls!

I don't understand why caller ID isn't full screen, there is no reason for it not to be. At the very least the caller ID pics should be 2-3 times bigger than they are now (closer to 3 times bigger). I, please bigger pics on incoming but also show on outgoing when you call, not just when they pick up. And really really PLEASE show the contact icon by their name in my contacts list! I just updated to Honeycomb but guess what? Still no large caller ID picture. I'm completely stumped by 2 issues.
1. How oogle can have so many unhappy customers on one 2 year old issue and won't even respond to give an undate or reason.
2. People are trying to make excusses for Google such as bandwidth or storage issues yet the Apple Iphone has had full screen caller ID for years. So how can it be a bandwidth or storage issue.
Google, will you at least have the good business savy of making a public comment on this issue? If you can't or won't make the changes that your customers want you can at least squelch much of the anger by explaining yourself.

Come on Google. My wife was just telling me that she regrets she changed her iPhone for the HTC Desire HD because of this issue.
Not to mention that this is one of the issues I hated about my Windows Mobile Xperia X1 (I changed to LG 2X). I was always "jealous" of my wife having the full screen photo called ID on her iPhone. And now, we both have low resolution pics on our expensive smart phones.
Unacceptable!!!

Agreed!
Full screen caller ID photo apps have all failed since recent system updates, yet the issue is still unresolved. This is a really basic problem, obvious to all who use the devices, & should be easy to fix.
Why hasn't Google addressed this yet? No Market app can fix this, so far as I've seen.

I see, that the problem will not be solved by google. Maybe, they want to limit the data transfer when you sync your phone. But modern users most have a flatrate, so it´s no problem, if the pics are bigger. I think, after such a long time with no reaction and no easy solution it´s a shame for goole. There are so many threads in different forums and so many better solutions (Windows Phone, Symbian, iPhone), that it feels, like they are not interested in users wishes.

---------------------
ok, here is the solution to get this fixed.
if enough people write to apple and complain about google taking 3+ years to (NOT) fix this, and how google support is terrible, and how we will be buying the next iPhone (5) and leaving android... there is a good chance it will make the media, and apple might mention it when launching the new iphone. they LOVE to have a dig at google.
That way it will embarrass google and then they will bloody fix it.
Simple.
Also write a lot of letters to Leo Laporte, and get him to ask google and talk about it on TWIT. I would also suggest the same for 'engadget' and 'this is my next (soon to be the verge)' 'android central' would also be a good idea.
get google embarrassed about it in the public media and shame them - because it is way beyond a joke, and each year android screens get higher res, it just looks worse and worse.
Warmly, Marty

ab...@gmail.com <ab...@gmail.com> #360
Just like Steve Jobs said of the Android: It is an adequate product with adequate features. It will never be top-of-its-class. When you sign up for Android, this low-rent look is a given. If you want high quality, high end look, you should switch to the iPhone. Android is just a poor-man's iPhone emulator. It's like buying a Hyundai since you can't afford to buy a BMW. It will have similar features, but a Hyundai just isn't a BMW. Android tries, but it just can't be an iPhone. Simple.
ga...@android.com <ga...@android.com> #361
Contact photos have been dramatically improved in Android 4.0 - see http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0.html . The max size is now 256x256, which looks much much nicer on incoming calls, contact details, and quick contacts. Large photos can be supplied by manually associating them with contacts, or by syncing them down from social networks. So, I'm going to close this issue out. Related requests should be tracked in new issues.
bk...@gmail.com <bk...@gmail.com> #362
While the Android 4 feature sounds great, has the Google contact sync been fixed to not blow away any higher resolution pictures we add manually? That's been the real issue...you could add a high resolution image, but since Google contacts didn't support them, it'd downsize them and overwrite what you saved. Of course, even better would be if Google contacts would support high res pics so that we *can* have them sync. But if they haven't done that yet, the new feature in Android 4 is worthless if the sync connector is going to overwrite them with poorer quality versions like it does today. Some people (like me) don't want to use people's social pics and would rather choose their own for their contacts, and the only way to do it now us to create a duplicate contact just for the picture and link them. That's a hack that I want to see go away either by having the Google contacts team increase pic resolution on their end, our failing that, the Android team needs to give an option not to sync Google contact pictures at low resolutions.
si...@gmail.com <si...@gmail.com> #363
Currently Google Contacts still seems to be using the same old 12x12px mini-pin- heads(thumbnails sounds too big)... maybe they'll switch it over with the release of 4.0?
sq...@gmail.com <sq...@gmail.com> #364
I don't believe this is resolved. The issue is not with android, but with google contacts. Android has always been able to display high resolution images so long as you don't synchronise with google contacts.

Same here. Android 4.0.4, cellphones more powerful than 3-years-ago desktop PCs... and pictures 96x96 as if we were in 1998. Using only google contacts I am ashamed of viewing my contact pic when I get a call. Please FIX IT.

Contact photos on iPhones look great - on my Nexus 4 they look like mosaics made of coloured stones. Why can't Google Contacts support larger photo size limits - 320x320 please
