Hi there,

I'm having trouble viewing Unicode Tamil Characters in my new nexus phone

I have already changed the encoding to UTF-8 in the browser settings

eg: http://www.bbc.co.uk/tamil/

This is really embarrassing as I did not have any issue viewing them on my iphone

Please support Tamil fonts in android, I am also waiting for Tamil fonts in my Nexus one, this is a serious drawback for me because most of my browsing and my friends Tweet are in Tamil, and my friends using iPhone are able to view the tamil font without any issues. please include this font.

I too need TELUGU language support very badly,
The solution has to come directly from Google, coz the Unicode set is quite differnt from Telugu(Other Indian languges) and European languages ... I think Indisms developer applications which helped with symbian platform has to enter android to go further ..!

Open the address about:config in your opera mini browser. This will open the browser’s option page.
Scroll down until you see something like this: Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts.
Set the above option value to yes and then click on Save button.

All the web traffic from Opera Mini browser goes through Opera’s proxy servers, which optimize the web content for mobile experience. As I said above, Opera Mini does not have the capability to render complex scripts in mobile. So, by setting the above option, we are letting the Opera’s proxy servers to render the complex scripts as images and send those images to mobile browser. Thus you’ll see the regional content as images, instead of fonts.

so we need the andriod platform to support tamil/telugu etc unicode fonts to support, like this many reasons are there, that is why still andriod cannot take iphones place.

i didn't verify the above method since not holding any android device, but my nokia 5530 is also having issues in displaying Unicode fonts, please update us if the above solution is solve the Unicode font issue.

it is a shame on Google & Android as as on date they donot support INDIC languages especially when they are in so-called UNICODE encoding.

Also it is disgusting  to note  the  South indians who claim to be the "IT Brains" of india  are yet to develop any application & put into the Android Market which will enable  to read Indic language contents in the text  messgaes,e-mail messages, word files etc.

At least Google can provide a font that has glyphs for Tamil / other Indic languages as iPhone provided until they gave full rendering support on iOS4. If font size is a concern they should give an option at least for a normal user to replace a system font with a font they would like to see. I don't think people at Google are not aware of all these things, I believe it is just neglected that they think  they do not want an Indian market share for Android as of today.

android has been launched ...over a couple years...alot tamil apps are in market, opera browser does Tamil. Freaking apple's Ios does everything in Tamil! Why google...why...why in the world are we still waiting... Since android 1.5 & then 1.6, ...eclair...froyo...& now gingerbread...does gingerbread support global fonts...unicode fonts? I am not from Google, but I can answer that Gingerbread does not support Tamil. Since development is closed and Google is mum about these things, we won't know if it would be in Honeycomb until it's release time. Just finished testing Gingerbread and noted that Hindi does not work even thought the release notes claim otherwise.

guys, There is a Tamil browser in the Android Market . It is still in the early phase but able to see some tamil sites like dinamalar etc. I am still evaluation it. Its a paid app so I guess the developer will definitely put more into it.

I use opera mini to read Tamil websites on my android. But it is a real shame that android has not come up with the Unicode support by itself. If google is really serious about Indian market, then it should be done as a priority.Until then iPhone would rule the roost.

Android is becoming best choice for OS in smartphones and tablets. For being popular in India, it must provide Indic languages support.

We people want to buy Android powered phones and tablets but can't buy till Hindi language support is available.

Recently bought G2 phone & Galaxy tab both running android 2.2. It is a disappointment to see that the browser doesn't support Tamil unicode. Apple iOS and other mobile OSs support tamil fonts. Why not android? Please do support Tamil unicode as soon as possible. It is already too late for android not to support indic languages.

Per my understanding... Android has some kernel level problem for supporting Indic languages. Hope it will be fixed soon.

....Gingerbread does not support...Is Honeycomb ready for tamil and other regional languages? Why is it taking so long? Android is taking a plunge into the indian market and why is there still an issue?

Sutharshan, thank you for your app. However, just by enabling bitmap rendering of complex fonts, we can read Tamil in Opera Mini (of course, even this is not a good solution). Which technique does your app use (if I may ask)?

Yeah ... Opera Mini does it for free or you can download Tamil Ulavi which does the same but I'm going to wait for MeeGo. Nokia and Intel's Linux-based open source mobile operating system project. I'm tired of Android and Google's business motives. There you go Google ..one unhappy client passing the message to the rest of the world.

Hi , the unicode text rendering will be supported in "HoneyComb" release. As quoted by android framework engineer. This will hopefully will resolve all the unicode language support issues.

I checked Honeycomb preview on emulator. The upcoming version of the Android. It doesn't show Tamil fonts. It shows only some boxes. When I copied scripts such as arabic and chinese it works fine :((

As some one has pointed out earlier, look at the statistics. Only 3020 number of people have voted or shown interest for this feature. If Indians are really interested in getting this problem to be resolved by Google, then need to bring in more people to vote. Google is  not going to bother if only 3000+ people are going to boycott android!

many are not aware about knocking google for hindi, they simply purchase
another phone which is supporting hindi. therefore no. is so low. But if

I've learned that complex rendering for texts (needed for languages like Tamil) would be available for Honeycomb. Pity is honeycomb needs higher hardware specs like dual core processor (might change in future), which means not much hope for us regarding this issue. We might need to turn our focus towards somewhere like xda-developers and support them to achieve this.

Even iOS 4.0 and above supports all Indian languages fonts (Telugu, Tamil and Hindi) rendering by default. It become nightmare to use Android browser when it compared to iOS. Just to read Telugu language news papers and website, my android phone do not support. I either had to use computer or use an iPhone. Please fix this issue ASAP.

You can also try Opera browser. It will render Unicode words that Android
cannot render on Opera server and displays on Android as images. It works
pretty well. SETTBrowser works for only Sinhala and Tamil languages.

I think Google should include Unicode/UTF-8,16 support in android as soon as possible. Unicode- being a universal technology for character encoding, Google must not neglect it. Support for Indian languages should be given by Google ion the upcoming versions of android. People currently using this technology should also demand for such language support.
Not providing the support to Indian languages proves that Google is not keeping attention to needs of customers in the huge Indian market.

When I visit Hindi websites, I see Square boxes like ☐ instead of characters अ आ इ ई उ ऊ on Unicode or UTF8 compliant Hindi websites. Even Google Hindi website doesnt open properly through my HTC Hero's stock Android 2.1 browser. Please support Devnagri lipi (Sanskrit/Hindi) fonts in Android OS. I want to change my default font to see Devnagri numerals: ०,१,२,३,४,५,६,७,८,९ instead of Roman numerals: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. I want my clock to use Devnagri numerals instead of Roman numerals. Stupid! Absurd! ... too bad google doesn't seem to care about adding international font package to support many other languages. Airtel and Aircel is promoting Iphone 4 release in India starting May 27th! Go get one ... It reads Tamil, Telugu, Hindi Gujarati and many other languages. Shame on you Google!

eenadu.net (Telugu news paper) works on honeycomb tablet ... but sakshi doesn't work. It's other way around on IOS (which supports indic fonts) where Sakshi.com works and eenadu.net doesn't. Doesn't know how ...

Hey Karthik. Your solution works perfectly. Only Two steps-
1. Install RootExplorer and
2  replace the "DroidSansFallback.ttf" in "\system\fonts\" with "mangal" or any other Unicode Font of your choice. Rename your font file to "DroidSansFallback.ttf" and replace the original file.

I think the default Unicode font provided with Android is missing the mapping for Hindi. Just replacing the font starts displaying Hindi characters instead of square boxes.

Please add support for Telugu and other language.

users of Samsung Galaxy S in India, update the latest firmware (DDJV9) through kies. This firmware supports unicode. Able to browse Tamil/Telugu/Kannada/Hindi/Malayalam websites; applications other than browser also renders Indian languages.

problem solved for Tamil font (i think for gujarati also) on android phone without rooting the device. thanks to fontomizer, i personally requested to include tamil fonts and available now (don't know whether he did this after my request)

here is how:

install fontomizer from android market
open the apps, once loaded go to T then Tamil Fonts.
once downloaded installed then you can change the font from settings.

Can someone tell me what the actual problem with the Android ? I would love to fix this. But I have no idea what the technical problem is. Can someone shed light ?

I see lots of complaining, but very little useful action. If you really want a language supported, then you need to look at the open source project and see what work needs to be accomplished.

First, look at the default droid font, and verify that the font actually contains the necessary glyphs for the languages you are interested in. If it does not, then you are going to have to figure out a way to get the needed glyphs into the font.

Second, you need to look into font rendering, and make sure that there are no issues with rendering the glyphs. Assuming that you have left to right languages, the issues here are probably minor.

Third, you need to make sure that the ICU support is present for the languages you are interested in. Google does not have the latest ICU in Android, so you might need to port a new version.

Supporting languages is HARD, and needs a lot of work. Just requesting the language, and hoping somebody else will do the work, will go nowhere.

There are a number of other bugs related to different language issues, such as support for right to left languages, these contain extensive discussion of the issues that need to be solved and will be a good starting point for someone actually interested in solving the problem.

Highly disappointed on android because of lacking Tamil Support.

Need to be able to read Unicode fonts - Especially on Android based tablets. I purchased ipad 2 - Really disappointed with it, since it lacks interactive/productive use of the screen. It just installs apps from apple store and only placed as big icons. BUT ipad 2 does read unicode fonts - I was reading word document in GUJARATI. I want to return it since it does not have the same functionality as Android Honycomb - Saying that - Andriod has not supported Unicode - At the moment we have root etc. We don't have time for that - So now I think I will wait and see which one catches up on this - Android or Ipad - And then will make a purchase.

Even a simple nokia phone(worth 20$) has support for unicode(for almost every language).
It is shame that android, being popular in south asia, doesnot has support for indic Unicode.

i am using samsung galaxy s2 ....   till now there is no updates to view tamil fonts ... i am able to view any of the tamil web sites .. please  tell me how am i able to get this fonts..please please i relly waiting for long time....

problem solved for Tamil font (i think for Hindi/Malayalam/gujarati also) on android phone without rooting the device. thanks to fontomizer, i personally requested to include tamil fonts and available now (don't know whether he did this after my request)

here is how:

install fontomizer from android market
open the apps, once loaded go to T then Tamil Fonts.
once downloaded installed then you can change the font from settings.

Hi everyone, please try Fontomizer SP available in Android Market. I have tried installing Maduram font and now I can view tamil fonts in all the applications. it doesn't require any rooting if our phone supports flipfont library. It works well in my samsung galaxy.

AFAIK Tibetan is still not working on Android 4.0. Attached is an example someone sent me. The top line shows how the text *should* render. The bottom line shows how it actually renders.

Anyone tested 4.0 (ICS)? Does it have support for most of the Indian Languages?

Nokia N9 not having this issue, any way i am not saying people to go for N9, When Android will be free from this issue? waiting for long long

May I request the team at Android/Google to please provide support to Indic scripts and specifically to Telugu.  It is a feature enjoyed by many on other mobiles and that includes Iphone.

Please support tamil and other indian fonts. Just recently, 3 of my friends bought ipad only because android pads don't support it.

I thought of buying Android tab but since it is not supporting tamil fonts, i have postponed.
