One thing I've noticed that is stupid about the "Tasks" calendar on the desktop
version is that it only adds tasks to your calendar that exist in the current list.
If you switch lists they disappear. Those should probably appear as separate
"Calendars" instead, especially on the phone, but for that to happen on the phone it
would need to happen on the desktop version, so we can choose colors. ;)
Just having a Google-sanctioned Tasks application on the phone would be better than
the current situation.

Yes, I would like this available as well. The gTasks app is a decent alternative for
now, but since the Task List is part of Google Calendar/Gmail online, I would like to
see Google's solution for this as well. Although I'd have to say I'm not sure I'm
willing to pay for an app to sync with my Google Task list, but that's probably
because I'm spoiled by Google providing email, calendar and tasks online for FREE.
*hint hint folks*
Considering the way the Android is laid out, a separate app might be a better solution.
Yes please Google, add this feature in. The sooner the better, but I'm willing to be
patient especially since troy.murray gave a reasonable non-app alternative to
checking tasks.

People are confusing a Tasks app with Tasks being integrated into the calendar. These
are different things.
No one is complaining about the apps devoted to gtasks. The issue is that Tasks can
create a calendar which can be integrated into your regular Google calendar. Going to
the regular web version allows you to view your regular Google calendar with the
tasks calendar overlaid - tasks with a due date will be listed on the calendar under
that date.
The android version of Google Calendar does not allow you to overlay your tasks
calendar with the rest of your calendars. THAT is the issue - it has nothing to do
with other apps related to gtasks.

Exactly, tasks need to be a crucial part of Calendar. And 3rd party apps are only a
temporary solution.
Many things in life don't exactly have a "date" associated to them, they just need to
be done at some point. That's what the tasks are for. Also, if you have a list of
things you gotta do today - u'd probably keep them in tasks, not in Calendar.. it's not
an appointment, just a list of things to keep in mind (or in phone in this case).
Google! Integrate tasks into calendar in FroYo!

The reasons you laid out there lead me to believe it would be better to have a

Agreed! Since I just got the Samsung Moment (which I have a love/hate relationship
with right now) I'm stuck not being able to access tasks from my phone - the most
important place I need them!
In the meantime, I'm going to have to find workarounds. I've discovered a simple free
app called OI Shopping (stands for OpenIntents), which allows me to create multiple
lists, each tied to a theme of your choosing. Very simple. Obviously ideal for
grocery shopping, but works for other lists too.
I also will be using Evernote. I eagerly await Google's resolution to this problem.

@brian.w.ney - Is it the same? gmail and calendar integration are differnet things, right? ( issue 36906588 has been decline by Google).
br...@gmail.com <br...@gmail.com> #45
I believe they are the same if you interpret the original bug reporter's
message as "GMail (app on Android) should support tasks". The complaint of
course is that the task lists available through the username of your GMail
account, albeit actually through the Google Calendar service. From the user
experience, it's easy to assume Google Calendar is just an extension of
GMail. Hence, a request for "GMail tasks" isn't for the GMail team to
implement task, which is why the bug was declined. The request is that
Android support the tasks which are available to the user through his or her
Google experience, which is authenticated via his "GMail" username and
password. The intention of the original poster and all of the follow-ups
are undeniable because the literal translation of the original bug report is
much more absurd than my explanation.
I ended up starring bug 36906588 because I searched for "tasks" and that was the
earliest request and I translated from user-speak to code-speak
automatically.
Furthermore if you combine the two sets of stars, it puts this feature
enhancement request at #3 or #4, which seems about right.

Only really speaking for myself, but I don't really care whether tasks are supported in the gmail app or calendar app or in a separate app. The core of the issue is that I can use tasks from my desktop and I'd like to have as good an experience using them on my phone as I already have for gmail or calendar.

If you browse to gmail.com/tasks and bookmark it. You can then add that bookmark as a shortcut on your Android phone "desktop" for quick access. It basically is a web app and is usable this way. When I was trying to figure out how to add my tasks to a homescreen widget (either synced with the calendar or as a standalone list), I was shocked to discover it cannot be done, at least not without a third-party app. It is really unbelievable that with all the advances in mobile technology that have occurred, these phones cannot support something as simple as a task list.
df...@gmail.com <df...@gmail.com> #71
AGirlLikeI5: Perhaps the tasks webpage can shown a widget (haven't tried adding a webpage to the homescreen though). Otherwise the app gTasks might have a widget included - consider writing Peter, the gTasks author about it.
md...@gmail.com <md...@gmail.com> #72
gTasks by SSI has a widget, and is compatible with Android Agenda Widget by Everybody All The Time.
I don't want to have to use third party apps for a feature that could be easily integrated. I would love to have a separate app that integrates with the calendar for support with the calendar widget and notifications.
I don't have mobile internet, and want o be able to access my tasks when offline even if I did. So, loading a web page is not an option.
This is a ridiculous oversight by google. I can have a Buzz and Voice app, but not a tasks app!?

I am testing a Nexus One and Google Docs for possible roll-out company-wide replacement of Microsoft apps. How the Android Group could repeatedly miss seemless integration of Google Docs apps with Android is perplexing.
The only way a small business can compete is to leverage technology effective and efficiently. Google Docs offerings are competitive, but right now only if you sit at a desk with a PC all day. Google has some wonderful engineers but they have limited to no "real world" experience on how the average business uses Google's (potentially) great apps.
If what's offered on the desktop is not available via mobile, I'm not rolling out Google Docs for my company. Apps that are available on desktop MUST be available through Android mobile devices. In addition, this apps should look-and-feel consistently across device interfaces. For most of us non-Google people, our needs revolve around Task List, Contacts, Calendar, Docs, Presentations, Spreadsheets and Databases. Failure to make all Google Docs applications available though Android is frustrating for those of us struggling to free ourselves of MS.
Until app integration failures in Google office products is eliminated, many small businesses will not abandon Microsoft product offerings.

There are several issues with cloud.
1. Lack of service near where I live as well as other areas such as airplane where service is not available.
2. Security and privacy issues with cloud.
TO expect the users to spend additional $$$ to buy apps for each function (calendar, address book, tasks, notes) is IMHO a highway robbery.
Like it or not, Outlook is a defacto standard and sync to that application should be a native feature of any smartphone.

ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #121
A calendar app without tasks is like ndrd without vowels. It makes the calendar app look very unprofessional. And, after all, it's a core function of a smartphone. I'm a latecomer to android and it surprises me that such a basic thing is still not sorted out. Makes it look like a beta. Hope tasks and calendar will come together in one app where they belong soon.
ot...@gmail.com <ot...@gmail.com> #122
I have a hard time understanding why such a fundamental and basic component is not supported natively on Android. As I've said before, using Google's services with the browser is an unbelievably bad solution compared to a solution that would be well integrated to the Android user interface.
Meanwhile I'm forced to use Astrid as a workaround until I find an open source solution.

This improvement in functionality would likely eliminate 4 threads on the limited sync capabilities with Outlook.

The tasks app that WebOS 1.4.5 or 2.x had/has was a real nice example of how it could be done.
...and it should be integrated with different sources, just as the calendars are.

What a joke! What a step backwards and an insult to (Android) handheld users. That there isn't yet... after all this time; an integrated task / calendar app available for this platform. Palm had it right years ago! Pocket Informant was the king of the Windows Mobile world and did everything one could imagine, in an app that elegantly integrated Contacts, Calendar, Tasks & Notes... with recurring events, linking, searching, etc. Agenda Fusion was pretty great too! PI for the Android today isn't even a shell of what it is on WM. I love the Android platform but I (almost) get sick thinking about how dumbed down the calendar/tasks functions have become. Google... you've retarded all this in the name of compatibility with your web desktop. For little BS games though, you're the best! :)

The integration of Google tasks with the Android OS seems like a simple task. With such a smooth integration between all other Google apps, I don't understand how Tasks could not be included. Not only do I have an Android phone, but it's also a GOOGLE phone (Samsung Nexus S 4G) - it's not as if Google apps are lying on top of a different platform - mine IS Google. I will try the free app at Gtasks.

It seems simple -- Google Calendar treats "Tasks" as a separate calendar, why can't it sync that "calendar" to the Android Calendar app? It's been over three years since Google introduced Tasks to Calendar. Since then there has been no development or improvement in Tasks. Instead the development has been on calendar color options and other seemingly useless items. Prompting my reaction..."Really? This is more important than functions?".
For Google Tasks to be functional it needs...
1. Reoccurring due dates in scheduling. Need to be able to schedule a task to repeat based on a schedule (i.e., every 5th day of the month, every two weeks)
2. To view all task lists in calendar at once, or better support of grouping tasks into differing groups/lists
3. Alerts and notifications
4. Overdue and incomplete tasks either viewed on current day (until completed) or daily alerts when past due tasks exist. If a task deadline can just go by without you being alerted or reminded then why bother...just use a note app.
These are NON-NEGOTIABLE requirements for a task manager to truly be effective. Other important functions should also include assigning tasks to other users (for teams, users of Google Docs, or perhaps task lists made public like sharing calendars). Start and end dates as well as times...plus tracking and reporting of task completion time. Labeling or categorizing tasks, not just different lists. Many of these are extremely similar to what can be done in Gmail and Calendar currently and shouldn't be difficult to include. Any search of help forums would tell you that Task development is needed, along with many, many others.
And for Android Phone users...I find it INEXCUSABLE that Google has not integrated tasks into either the native calendar or developed a task app. Especially after all this time and updates to the OS. Of course...I add this to the ever-growing list of things that Google has not seen fit to improve in Android, along with a native file manager, data and app backup (the Play store and calendar/contacts sync is NOT a backup), Google Voice integration (should be able to connect acct and have calls and messages seamlessly function through the dialer and text message apps...should NOT need the separate app), and if Chrome is so great, why isn't the mobile version the default, native browser for Android? Even Microsoft proudly uses mobile Internet Explorer in it's phone OS, regardless of the public's perception of IE. Yes, there are good apps for these things in the Play Store but I shouldn't have to go looking for something (and possibly paying) so basic...and considered part of Google calendar and/or Gmail.
Trying to utilize other ideas or options is also difficult because of other limitations or lack of additional APIs to developers...such as being able to view tasks as a calendar (hat could be utilized by all apps and widgets that work with the calendar app). Additionally, some of the improvements or new apps introduced the last couple of years have been interesting and possibly fun, but hardly critical, highly functional or even necessary. These would include face recognition (maybe cool, but hardly important and no more secure than before), and the reading app Currents (a news app with little ability to control what you read and poor Reader integration). They exist because somebody thought it would be "cool" is my guess. Makes you question if there is any plan or thought put into what Google does, and since they rarely make public statements about such things...we may never know.
After three years of all this and much more...these are just a few reasons why I'm considering dumping Android as soon as I can and predict it will start a downward fall. Success comes from an accountability to users and that's what Google lacks...ANY accountability to improve, meet consumer expectations and needs, address issues, communicate changes, etc. Remember they don't give all those web services free for no reason or to be "nice". In 2011 their reported income was 10.58 BILLION and 96% of that came from all the ads in their products that you click on (targeted by your data) and ad services and marketing data sold to other companies. We product users are NOT the customers, we are the commodity being sold and that drives everything that Google does.
Thanks. Needed to rant about all this for a bit.

and three years later... still no solution

I have been in computer business for almost 30 years, and I find it mind boggling that we celebrate companies that sell us fog and false promises. Android is spawn of idiots and is piece of SH*T. And not because engineers didn't make a good OS, because they DID. It is excellent, my device is stable and perfect. EXCEPT, it is useless, completely and utterly useless except for stupid Facebook (which is useless by itself but that's another story). My device needs to support calendar, tasks, mail, notes, offline and online, out of the box. MICROSOFT does it and you can hate it as much as you want but my next phone will run MICROSOFT OS because such a small thing like GOOGLE is not capable making their OWN device work with their OWN online service. Way to go Google, now we know why you hire all those engineers. I hope that they (the engineers)don't mind that whole world think you hire complete retards to write Google software. I know these are management decision (for whatever idiotic reason marketing/management guys think it is OK) and if they were allowed they would make an actual software that could be used, so let them. Everybody thinks 2500 people is not important enough for them to change their mind, but most of the people that have Android phone think same as I do, they just don't have my bad temper and don't bother to get mad enough to sit down and type this much.
To summarize, GOOGLE please stop being an moron and add a functional calendar with to-do and tasks. If you don't know how, ask Microsoft, they do....

I absolutely agree with the prior poster. This is absurd. I shouldn't have to jump between several apps to manage my calendar and to do lists. It is a huge hindrance and very time consuming. Keeping organized and getting items accomplished should not involve extensive data management. The technology is there, it can and has been done by competitors. Get with the program, Google.

Screw waiting on Google while they're too busy re-re-re-coding the UI for Android instead of adding useful features. Astrid tasks is the closest I've come to any sort of real tasks integration on Android. Calengoo attempts this, but it's not real integration, so don't waste your money like I did. Astrid is the way to go. (I swear I don't work for them.)

DITTO #2031!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY DO NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT THE TASKS THAT I PUT ON MY PHONE ARE NOT SYNCING TO MY DESKTOP. IT'S ALL A PART OF GOOGLE........WHICH I THINK I MAY DO AWAY WITH ALTOGETHER!!!!!!!!!

Since android has widgets, my phone would be a perfect reminder for stuff I have to get done.
Right now I am using google calander + a 3rd party app (gTasks). It gets confusing having my events split up.

I notice the first posts on this thread were back in August of 2009. It is 3.5 years later and the status of the issue is still "New" and it is still unassigned.
I don't think any Google developers are actually reading this thread. Maybe there's another place to write to that will be seen?

create there will not show up on the Android Calendar app.
Integrating tasks into the Android Calendar app would be very useful, with
the ability to create new ones and mark old ones as complete, but at the very
least letting us view the Calendar named "Tasks" would be nice.
