In my opinion the root cause of this problem is the google contacts service and NOT the android os/apps.
But both are owned by Google.
So please Google - I'd like to read one single statement how and when this "bug"/problem will be addressed.

Android now supports high resolution photos for contacts. Now, when you push a photo into a contact record, the system processes it into both a 96x96 thumbnail (as it has previously) and a 256x256 "display photo" that's stored in a new file-based photo store (the exact dimensions that the system chooses may vary in the future). You can add a large photo to a contact by putting a large photo in the usual PHOTO column of a data row, which the system will then process into the appropriate thumbnail and display photo records.

Many devices are not going to get the update to 4.0 because of the hardware requirements.

Existing phones not receiving 4.0 aside, it is unclear that those receiving or shipping with 4.0 will truly benefit from this feature in the expected way, or at least in the way I would expect/like.

I do not see anywhere in the SDK a mention that the contents of the photo store will be synced with Google Contacts. This means that any phone migration, multiple phones, phone + tablet combos etc... will not benefit from this feature without copying the photos independently to each device and assigning them to the contacts independently on each device.

As has been noted before, this bug has more to do with the sync backend not supporting high resolution photos than the dialer itself. The dialer does display cleaner/higher resolution photos up until the point where the photo is downscaled by a sync. Now with 4.0 a sync will apparently not downscale a photo but it is unclear if the higher resolution photo will ever get synced to benefit your other devices.

I hope that I am wrong.

Having only 256x256 looks terrible when stretched on a 720p screen. Please fix!

I can confirm that contact pictures are degraded after assigning a high resolution photo, formatting the phone, and restoring contacts.

It is fixed in ICS where you can see high-res photos, but don't expect them to remain high quality after a format/restore or when syncing with other devices.

This seems like a very simple problem to address. Granted the amount of storage required for the upgrade would probably be huge, but that shouldn't be a problem for Google. I'm pretty sure most people would pay a buck or two for the upgrade. This is a major oversight, and an issue that has persisted for years. Google, please hear the outcry. Galaxy Nexus owners everywhere are ashamed, and further ignorance to the issue is a glaring blemish on your image.

To everybody complaining about this now that ICS is out: The rest of us have had to live with this issue for the past TWO YEARS. Moaning about it apparently doesn't work.

If enough people moan about it they might listen. The trick is how to make people vote for this issue.

This issue has been here for over 2 years and only a little over 200 has stared it. No wonder Google doesn't care.

If you spread the word instead of complaining about the people who write here maybe Google will realize that they need to change this.  

I grew tired of waiting and while I was using calendar sync I'm using an iPhone, now that iCloud is available and also free I moved my contacts to it and now all the pics are in full res :D

Every time my phone rings I see a full screen, low res blurry picture. It is a constant reminder that this issue really makes ICS ugly.

Just got a Galaxy Nexus and the blurred contact photos when synced to Gmail are very bad. Can you please fix?

I've been living with this problem since G1, which was not very apparent back then on the 320 x 480 screen. However, on Galaxy Nexus' 1280 x 720 screen it is horrible.

It's a gmail issue, complain to them. They don't allow photos of more than 96x96.

Even though it is a gmail issue, nobody forces android to download that crappy pictures and put them over hi-res photos.

Looks like google improved the picture quality from gmail contact. I can't confirm the image siE, but it does improved

Just tried changing a picture in gmail and checking on the phone... I don't think it is improved at all.

Try the other way around.  Add the picture on the phone and then sync with Gmail.  The picture quality is still not great.  But much improved.  The problem of course is that when you reset the phone or buy a new one, it will sync back from GMail and it's all blurry once again.

Tell me why, when i sync 5,000 songs to Google Music, it also includes hi-res album art, some of which I created myself, but it can't let me save hi-res pictures for a measly 150 contacts. Gag.

It's ridiculous that such a beautiful phone and OS displays the contact's photo on the entire screen as a call comes in and its such a pixelated blurry image.  

I left Blackberry for problems like this, I'd hate to jump over to Apple for a better solution but I would for something that can be so easily fixed.

Well I don't know how to get high rez pics, when they've been png'd or jpg'd down to 11k 20K sizes for the contacts.  Agree higher rez the way to go but you'd then have to take new high rez pics for the contacts.

Even the 400x400 photos enough for it and its not bigger than 1MP.

Just switched to android from iOS and for all the sh*t talking android users say about iOS, this has got to be the most pathetic part. WTF is the point of having photos for contacts if they looks like a POS.

Yes, it would be great to fix it. In fact, maybe there is no bug in Android himself, but only in google contacts.

A amelioration would be great too in google contact: support transparent color. In fact, google contact should be able to take care of all caracteristics of a PNG image (and retain them in a lossless format).

Yes, in Android 4.x, it is OK, but only if you affects image contact from the phone. If you create or modify the contacts in GMail, the pictures synced have an horrible quality, with 96x96 resolution.

Same problem here ... Upgraded to Galaxy Nexus, synched my contacts with Gmail and the pictures are horrible! Not only that, but the pictures are cropped funky when an incoming call comes in! Use the full image size! I cropped it for a reason! I realize this is an Ice Cream Sandwich issue, but come on Google, I'm disappointed in the entire package user experience here.

Yes big problem for me too. From what can be seen on the videos from Google IO 2012, they might partly have fixed the problem in Android 4.1.

But just to be clear, there are two issues. The first is the fact that the google servers downsize the picture to 96x96 pixels. That's stupid but it's on the server side mainly. I think they partly solved that for Android by adding a feature to have a seperat high resolution image in addition to this "thumbnail" picture.

But there are two problems with this high resolution picture. The first one is still linked to the previous: the high resolution picture is not synced with the google server. Thus, is the devices gets factory reset or you move to another device, gone are your pretty pictures.

The second is and ICS problem only. To understand it, let's say we are using the phone address-book (no synchronization that could garble the pretty pictures).

Before ICS, the picture was stored directly in the database only and, though there was some kind of limit, the resolution and compression level could be whatever the programmer decided it to be. So I have been able to write apps that would load very nice 200x300 pixel picture.

With ICS, a high resolution picture is stored in a seperat file and only the 96x96 thumbnail is written to the database. No a problem in itself as long as the contact app will retrieve and display the high resolution picture.

But the problem is that when ICS stores the high-resolution picture, it will scale it down to 256x256 and compress it quite heavily.

So my request to Google is : (a) give the user and the developer a choice of what resolution and compression ratio to use for those picture or (b) do not rescale nor compress the picture, juste take what the user or developer has provided.

Conclusion: even if fixed in Jelly Bean (maybe), please fix in ICS also.

Have to say this is the one issue that Google need to address to stay ahead of Windows Phone 7/8 and iOS 6. It can't be hard to stop Google Sync sending poop down the pipe.

Not fixed for me either using 4.1 on my Nexus. Unfortunately Sync screws it up for me.

J'ai Android 4.1.1 sur moon Galaxy Nexus et le problème est résolu partiellement. Lorsque j'ajoute une photo de bonne qualité dans Google Contact, elle est toujours synchronisée en mauvaise qualité.

Le seul cas où cela fonctionne : Lorsque j'utilise l'image par défaut d'un contact, et que cette image est de bonne qualité.

I have 4.1.1 on Android Galaxy Nexus and the problem is partially solved. When I add a good quality picture in Google Contacts, it is always synchronized with poor quality.

Even the JellyBean "fix" is deficient (see a comprehensive post here: http://goo.gl/JZVEA), and that's not to mention that not everyone has JB or will ever be able to upgrade to it.

With 10gb of space in the account, I guess g-contacts could spare a few kilobytes for a hi-q contact pics and figure out how to sync the, back and forth...

Man, while ICS is definitely a pretty OS when installed on a nice phone, don't try to talk anyone who's seen an iOS device into trying to buy one. They'll go to the People app and laugh at you straight away.

After so many years, I have to say 96x96 px is a major disappointment.
