Simon, This issue is about m3u files which contain links to websites, for example streaming radio. If you open one of the m3us in notepad and the paths don't start with "http" then you're reporting your problem on the wrong bug report.

How to play .m3u8 Video Playlists in Android 2.2
sl...@gmail.com <sl...@gmail.com> #9
I verified this issue and still exists!
Reproduced on Android 2.3.3 (HTC MyTouch 4G)
Reproduced on Android 3.0.1 (Acer Iconia A500).
Also, my M3U list has HTTP in the beginning - but it doesn't help... :-(
Please, fix.
For example of m3u you can checkhttp://www.propovednik.com/AI/m.m3u with has few links in it. Works fine in Windows Media Player, VLC, ..., but not on Android.

ipad, iphone & ipod touch can all play an m3u file by default right out of the box. Very useful when listening to online radio. However with android you must download a 3rd party app to listen to online radio
do...@gmail.com <do...@gmail.com> #15
Even the 3rd-party apps do not seem to work with m3u. It's unacceptable that we can't do this out of the box. It's not a problem with any other Linux, at least with contemporary kernels.
md...@novumsoftware.nl <md...@novumsoftware.nl> #16
On my galaxy s2 (android 2.3.3) and my Xoom (android 3.1) the m3u8 is working. Unfortunately my clients with older android versions are complaining.
hs...@gmail.com <hs...@gmail.com> #17
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 (android 2.3.3) as well but .m3u playlists do not show up in the stock music player however they do show up in 3rd party music players (i.e. doubletwist), but I really want to use the stock player 'cause I love the interface and the layout as well as the audio enhancement options
bl...@gmail.com <bl...@gmail.com> #18
I ran into this issue while trying to port my iOS app to Android. Im testing on my Droid X (2.3.3) , and this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. I do not want users to download a 3rd party app, and the abilities of the stock media player are lacking / nonexistent when dealing with .m3u's. I hope that this is resolved soon, its a shame that Android applications are lacking functionality that other smartphones take for granted.
lo...@gmail.com <lo...@gmail.com> #19
Having just plonked down a pile of money for an Android S2, I'm speechless to find that the resident media player cannot open playlist entries that are URLs. Doesn't the U stand for Universal? What are the Google people smoking?
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #20
It was surprising that this didn't work when I bought my Droid. It's even more surprising that I still can't stream m3u playlists.

Trying it on Android 3.1 on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it's not working. Looking for a fix as well, don't need to overload this thing with applications for m3u playlists.
id...@gmail.com <id...@gmail.com> #24
I don't see why this is a big deal on Android, but for some reason it is. The M3U structure is simple, it's essentially a list of URLs to external MP3 files. However, when you click the M3U in the browser, it tries to launch and then tells me that it's an unsupported file type.
M3u files works flawlessly on the iPhone. I'd really like to believe that "Droid does" (as they advertise) and I don't want to hate on it too hard, but why isn't a simple M3U even supported?

M3u8 is more than a list of mp3 files. A list can contain a list. Selection is automatically based on bandwidth. The list may contain live streaming video with .ts files. See http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/networkinginternet/conceptual/streamingmediaguide/HTTPStreamingArchitecture/HTTPStreamingArchitecture.html for more details.

Usually, Android stands for:
"can do much more than other smartphones, out-of-the-box"
but in this case it stands for:
"look like a moron as you can't figure out why the device doesn't play your frickin jukebox streams as it does on every other os, search the internet, fail, search the internet a couple more times failing, find this issue, facepalm, decide between these options:
- rely on third party apps you don't know will be around in a year (and btw figure out how to adress them via api cause it's not documented)
- trigger an intent that plays a single stream and generally sucks (seehttp://stackoverflow.com/questions/2869006/android-intent-for-http-mp3-stream-on-htc-incredible ), rewrite your music library backend to avoid playlists AND rewrite the frontend to deal with it accordingly, jerry rig it all together
- rewrite the goddamn stock media player because it's dumb as horsepoo from 1993"
Honestly, i am dissappoint. The default media player supports streams, so wth doesn't it support them in M3Us with a decent naming and stuff? But now i understand better why people prefer the iPhone.

se...@gmail.com <se...@gmail.com> #30
I just realized this ... you really can't play m3u playlists on Android out of the box!?!? The world's oldest playlist technology? The simplest? It requires zero additional technology to get working ... just read the file, download the mp3 files and play them in order.

People need to stop responding to this... the status is "new", no one at Google gives a shit and therefore it has no owner, and its been ignored since march 2010. They don't give a motherfuck about this feature. All they care about are making handsets with android. Ignoring this since 2010 means "fuck off, fuck you, we don't fucking care".

Amen. IMO this mentality is why Android is the new "crap OS" and nothing more than a cheap Symbian replacement.

I have a new LG Lucid running 2.3.6, and out of the box it was able to "Execute" an M3U generated by my website, where that M3U consisted solely of a set of HTTP URL's, one for each MP3 file. But now, perhaps after an OS upgrade, or an update to the Music Player, I get the same issue. VERY DISAPPOINTING.
al...@alexoss.net <al...@alexoss.net> #64
Hm, I just un-starred this... whatever black magic caused my LG Lucid 2.3.6 to stop being able to play M3U's has been replaced by white magic: suddenly it's working again. The conspiracy theorist in me says Verizon pushed a fix to my phone, but who knows...?

Support for HTTP references in M3U files as per the standard would be appreciated. Additionally making sure HTTP AUTH is supported. Currently using Jelly Bean on Nexus 7 surprised it is not supported. Isn't this effectively how video in HLS streams work with a UTF-8 version of m3u8 - shouldn't the intents take care of the audio based on mime-types?

Surprised only 73 comments so far. Tried this on the Droid X2 when it was new and went on to other things. Now, got my Nexus 7 as well as got Eclipse set up for Android development and returned to this issue. My website hands an m3u file of urls to the browser. The browser opens a window to choose a player, but none seems to handle the file. I can download a single mp3 and play it fine. There must be a player that can read a list of urls and play them. Is this really an OS problem?

Application "Just Playlist" from Google Play,
should be able to correctly handle m3u playlists.
However, the Android system by itself seems to be unable to handle it.

Greetings,
Well, I can not get Just Playlists to recognize my playlist.
the browser on Nexus 7 causes an m3u file to be downloaded and then Android
shows me the installed players including Just Playlists and I select it,
but it does not find the file...suspect not looking in the right place, but
see no where to set it.

I use m3u playlists to differenciate actual full albums or proper playlists from "album" in tags. Instead of sorting through 4000 "albums" part of listed being single tracks, I would have half that count listed, with single tracks separated in one big playlist. No proper recognition of m3u (by the way are recognised in other windows and linux programs) is very disruptive.
