Im kinda confused. I need real DUN support, cause my car wants to connect via DUN. All RIM devices are able to handle DUN, as well most of the Nokias/SonyEriccsons are (even the older ones !).
Strange thing is: As of HW-Specs some Android-Devices are able to do BT DUN, and i also see D/OppReceiver( 3012): SVC NAME=bluetooth_dun in my logcat.
But im not able to tether via BT DUN and this is (at least for me) a NOGO. Have to sell my phone and buy a WP7, RIM or Symbian device if im not able to sort out my troubles :-/

Need DUN on HoneyComb Pad (Iconia Tab A500) for accessing internet via mobile phone SonyEricsson (W660i) - it is not working as usual "Windows.PC to phone".

I too need reverse Bluetooth DUN tethering capabilities. My wife and I both own Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablets which have no built-in cell connectivity, and both have Motorola dumb phones which don't include wifi, but do allow Bluetooth DUN tethering. Tethering to the phone works just fine from other Bluetooth devices such as my notebook PC, TomTom GPS, etc., but not from Android Honeycomb.
The ability to tether from an Android tablet to a cell phone via DUN would turn it from a gimmicky toy that's of little use when away from home beyond reading ebooks, to something we'd be raving about to friends and family. It defies belief that Honeycomb was shipped without this fairly basic feature, when Google is already playing catchup with Apple in the tablet market. Even for folks with wifi capability on their phones, Bluetooth is infinitely preferable due to the much lower power consumption, but not all of us can use Bluetooth PAN.
Please, please, Google -- consider adding reverse Bluetooth DUN support to Android...

Bluetooth DUN - as used to expose WCDMA/HSPA/EDGE/etc cellular networks - is in many ways a horrid hack. Running ppp over a virtual serial line between phone and computer is stunningly inefficient and clumsy. It's a stupid, obsolete technology that deserves to die a quiet and unlamented death.
Unfortunately, it's also the only option for many devices and users.
Even iPhone supports Bluetooth DUN ... and it has a Bluetooth stack that's in most other ways incredibly crippled.
Given that much of the support exists in bluez already, it's a bit of shame not to see it reflected in the higher levels of the Android stack. Wifi tethering (as offered by HTC, at least) is not overly reliable and is very battery-hungry. It's also no use at all for devices that only support bluetooth not wifi.
I was astonished to discover that my new HTC Desire HD didn't support Bluetooth DUN *or* PAN, given that it's higher priced than Apple's fondlephone and less locked down. At least HTC has added wifi tethering support to the base android system so I'm not stuck with a USB cable.

Cool! Reverse Bluetooth tethering feature work in HoneyComb 3.2, but need to support it in firmware Tab's developers. Also, work USB cdc_ether in SE.W660 (with manual init - works).
kn...@gmail.com <kn...@gmail.com> #25
@tevsan: Care to elaborate? I'm on Honeycomb 3.2 on an Asus Transformer, and reverse bluetooth tethering definitely does *not* work out of the box. I still get the same "paired but not connected" message that I've gotten since Honeycomb 3.0, no bluetooth profiles detected (although the phone works fine for reverse bluetooth tethering with my notebook PC and TomTom GPS), and nowhere to enter a dialup number.
As far as I can see, absolutely nothing has changed in Honeycomb 3.2, at least as relates to bluetooth tethering.

2 knoxplor : Currently I have an Acer Iconia A500 with custom rom based on firmware of Asus Transformer 3.2 (8.6.5.6), before I have tried custom rom from Motorola Xoom 3.2.
In Bluetooth setting for paired device (when go in) I found one-more menu-item - "use internet connection". In HoneyComb 3.1 - there was no connection to internet over phone. But 3.2. In Xoom.rom I had to manualy initiate connection from command-line via Terminal using command "dhcpcd bnep0" and "setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8". In Asus.rom there is no need doing anything else except tap to connect in submenu of paired device.
PS: sorry for my bad english.

Thanks for the reply, and don't worry about your English -- it gets the message across fine, and I'm sure is infinitely better than my ability to speak your mother tongue. ;-)
I wonder, though, are you actually referring to Reverse Bluetooth DUN? That is to say, are you connecting from the tablet to your cell phone using Bluetooth Dial-up Networking (not Personal Area Networking), where you have to supply a "number" for the cell phone to dial and establish a network connection once the Bluetooth DUN session is initiated?
I'm thinking perhaps you're referring to Bluetooth PAN, as your commands above seem only to request an IP address and configure DNS server on a TCP/IP connection that's already extant -- nowhere does it seem to dial a number to establish the network connection in the first place.
Certainly, when I check my phone in Honeycomb 3.2 on an Asus Transformer, nowhere do I get a "Use Internet Connection" option...

Tnx for compliment.
Hmmm. Maybe I'm wrong with it's name...
My mobile SE W660 is having profiles for BT-internet with needed settings there. When I paired tablet with phone, I seeing my paired device, two icons and wrench-tool. After taping wrench, new window appears with options and profiles, which contains two: Input Device and Internet Access. In case of taping on Internet Access, cellphone establishes connection automatically without any questions. Tablet gets settings from phone... Possible it's PAN really? :-)
Also in description was written for customized rom that used enhanced version of drivers, and I saw for API13 (HC 3.2) there appeared BLUETOOTH_TETHER. So, why and how it is working for me, I don't know for sure.

My Galaxy tab 10.1 is absolutely useless to me without Bluetooth DUN; iBluever was the only reason why I jailbreak my iPod Touch. I would have paid $20 for iBluever. Just for the simple fact I cant Bluetooth DUN on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 make it absolutely useless. This is one of my two biggest gripe about the Galaxy tab 10.1 [I guess Android Honeycomb all together]. My second gripe is the fact that so many apps refuse to rotate 180 degrees. So many cases set the Galaxy tab upside down when standing up. The second you fire-up angry birds the screen turns upside down. Youtube stock app does the same thing once you play a video in full screen. I think that is plain weak on android’s part. This makes you appreciate the iPad. There is obsolutely ZERO apps that do not rotate 180 degrees on the iPad.

Wrong, Cole. You should be blaming Google. The page you referenced is utterly outdated (it refers to Android Cupcake, ie. 1.5 from 2009), and as of then it said: "A lot of integration work remains before we could officially claim that DUN or PAN is supported by the platform. Like HID, we would need to plumb the DBUS API's to these daemons up into the Android Java framework, and add code to setup the network paths via pppdand/or iptables. We do not yet have a release targetted for official DUN or PAN support."
Getting on for three years later, they still haven't done it, and frankly I doubt they ever will.

Do I really have to get another SIM card in order to connect to the internet on my HTC Flyer while on the road? Connecting to the internet through the existing data connection on my cell phone is a basic necessity! My Windows computer can do it, so why Android can't? I'm starting to regret getting the most 'open' OS I could find for a tablet.

@WinFixIT The Flyer doesn't require DUN to internet share. Android includes Bluetooth PAN, which is actually a better technology. Assuming you also have an Android handset (or any modern smartphone), you can also use Wi-Fi sharing to get your flyer connected. If your cellphone has neither PAN or Wi-Fi sharing, then it's unfair to blame Google for omitting DUN from its Bluetooth stack ;).
DUN is a bigger issue for auto use — a lot of in-car systems and TomToms require DUN to connect to the web. This is a much bigger deal for these owners.

If Google had included DUN, I wouldn't have the problem I have now. I own a Nokia X2, since I think a phone should be cheap/economic with its battery/have a good camera and the ability to use the flash as a flash light. If my Windows computer can use it as a pass through modem, my tablet should be capable of the same feat. My phone doesn't need WIFI, it only needs to exploit the capabilities of the SIM-card, i.e. cell phone calls and 3G. I haven't got a clue what PAN is, I'll try to find out.
Since I use the phone to take pictures while I'm mapping for Openstreetmap.org, it should be almost 'expendable', i.e. not cost more than €150. The risk I drop or lose it is just too big.
Google shouldn't worry though. I'll probably get another SIM card for €12/month to put in the Flyer and I'll even start developing for the platform. I'll have to learn Java first, but I'll even take that hurdle.
Cheers,
Polyglot

Come on Google! There is a clear use case for this. A 7" - 8" tablet is of the smallest convenient size for web surfing but still just too big to replace a phone at all times. A normal person can always carry a phone, because it fits to the pocket, and does not need a backpack. The easiest way to make internet connection for a tablet is with an "old" 2G/3G phone with BT DUN, because the phone already is there. I will not buy the 3G stick AND a second SIM with data plan just for twice a month use - as the BT DUN would do. I will consider a linux or W7 tablet next time I go shopping for that, as they do support BT as method for Internet connection. When HW specs say Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR, I expect DUN. I hope you do not have the NIH syndrome.

Just for clarity there seem to be two things discussed here - using Android devices as DUN clients and using them as servers (gateways). I believe the original issue and the one most people are desperate for as discussed here and in many other places on the web is the ability to act as a server, i.e. to connect another device such as a satnav unit to an Android phone using the Bluetooth DUN profile in order to use the Android phone's 3G data connection. The other issue which some are talking about with tablets is to use the Android device as a client for another phone which already supports the DUN profile.
As an aside, I see that a few Motorola Android phones like the new RAZR and some (?) of the Droids support DUN out of the box as well as other missing profiles like MAP so I assume Motorola wrote a proper BT stack for them! Quote from the Motorola website for the RAZR:
"Bluetooth Smart Ready; Stereo Bluetooth Class 2, Version 4.0 LE+EDR OPP, DUN, SPP, GAVDP, AVDTP, AVCTP, A2DP, AVRCP 1.4, HFP 1.5, DID, HID, HSP, MAP, PAN-NAP, PBAP, SM,GATT/ATT,GAP,HR".

@69. No Tim, I think the proportions are exactly the opposite to your suggestion. Most comments are about using reverse DUN to connect an Android device to a non Android, or other Android phone to get some form, albeit slow, of 3G connection via the phone. Of course, in fact both DUN and Reverse DUN are needed and were once, apparently, available. Many of us have existing data plans and wifi only Android tablets...
ti...@gmail.com <ti...@gmail.com> #70
@70. Wifi tethering is very common on many phones but I agree both DUN capabilities are needed. Seems daft that I have a drawer full of old Nokia handsets which can do this but my all-singing, all-dancing Android can't! Equally reverse DUN on Android tablets would be one up on the iPad...

kn...@gmail.com <kn...@gmail.com> #71
It wouldn't be one-up, it would be catching up. The iPad can do this already. It's only Android owners who are stuck in the dark ages, with nine months of begging required to even have the issue assigned. At this rate, we can expect a solution in 8 to10 years...
ar...@gmail.com <ar...@gmail.com> #72
We're hardly stuck in the dark ages. DUN /is/ the dark ages. PAN is the modern replacement. The unfortunate thing is that the Android team eschewed an old technology that still has significant uses where PAN isn't available.
ti...@gmail.com <ti...@gmail.com> #73
Have to admit I've never tried as I always use wifi tether on my iPad (since my Android phone can't do DUN!). I know the iPhone can't do DUN either though. Also, it's not 9 months - it's over 3 years as there was an issue report on the same thing raised in December 2008 which was closed in March 2011 (yes, nearly 2 1/2 years later) because PAN had been implemented. The original request was for DUN as well, hence this issue being raised - the original one should never have been closed.

Has anyone started a bounty site for this? I'd be willing to throw some money at the problem. (If you haven't seen these, there are sites that will let individuals put together small amounts of money ahead of time, which a developer gets if they finish the work. Not enough to make it worth Google's time, but could help get a grad student some pizza money).

Those on the verge of abandoning Android because of the lack of DUN and other missing Bluetooth profiles may be interested to see the specs of the new Motorola RAZR:
http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/GB-EN/Consumer-Products-and-Services/Mobile-Phones/ci.MOTOROLA-RAZR-GB-EN.alt#anchor
If the specs are correct, it includes DUN and interestingly also MAP for accessing text messages for those who are trying to use it with a car ICE system with SMS support. This will be a Motorola Bluetooth extension not a Google one, I guess - but if it's true then Motorola are likely to sell me a phone simply because they make the only Android handset with decent Bluetooth support! Would love to see someone extract the BT stack and make it available for other handsets...
Cheers,
Tim

I need DUN profile to provide Internet to my GPS Navigator. My Nokia Phone can connect easily because it has DUN profile, but my android does not have it.

Thanks GOD, I have updated my Asus Transformer to ICS and now can connect to internet via my nokia phone. Seems Google have implemented reverse-DUN in ICS.
gw...@gmail.com <gw...@gmail.com> #91
No, they haven't. I too have updated my Transformer, and there is still nowhere to enter a phone number. Without that, it is not Bluetooth DUN. What do you think the DU stands for... Dial Up.
gy...@gmail.com <gy...@gmail.com> #92
The DUN was a BASIV service of my 10 years(!) old Windows CE powered PDA! Now I bought a latest techology tablet with android, and I can’t connent to the 3,5G internet (or other diaplup connection) over bluetooth, with my mobilephone! What a evolution!!
GOOGLE PLS develop the DUN in as soon as possible!!!

al...@gmail.com <al...@gmail.com> #93
Well-well. The BT tethering (reverse, USB too) or whatever needed to use an external device to connect to 3G, seems to be available only for ROOTED androids!!! I updated my Archos 80 G9 Turbo to android 4.0.4, kindly provided by Archos, with high hopes for improvement in the matter - but actually there's none. Nevertheless, JoikuSpot (for Nokia) does not provide a proper WiFI for Androids, as Nokia supports AdHoc Wifi tethering only, and AdHoc is disabled in android 4. I'm afraid that this is an EVIL POLITICS issue. Seems that I will have to dig into rooting my tablet, or eat the humble pie and buy that Archos G9 3G USB Stick. :-(

My old Nokia 5320 definetly does not support PAN, only DUN. And Asus Transformer with ICS (not rooted) connects to internet via it.

mo...@gmail.com <mo...@gmail.com> #95
Asus Transformer (with ICS 4.0.3, unrooted, bluetooth driver v8.27), does see DUN capability of my Samsung D780. That's a step forward. The only profile listed is "Internet access". As I click it, it changed status to "Connecting..." and fails silently within a minute. There is no way to enter any options, such as phone number or APN, which must be set to "internet" in my case. The problem is with the tablet, since both my laptop and my ancient Dell Axim x51v use DUN successfully with this phone.

Tethering to a non-Android phone is possible now with BlueVPN 1.1 (this version supports only Gingerbread and Honeycomb devices; the ICS version will be ready soon)
pa...@gmail.com <pa...@gmail.com> #111
BlueVPN 1.1 works, but is it possible to establish the connection without any wifi signal around, so that this bluetooth DUN issue can truely be solved?
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #112
VPN is officially supported only from version 4.0.x (ICS).
With Gingerbread and Honeycomb is not possible to change network traffic routing if the device is not really connected to mobile or wifi net. The ICS version of BlueVPN doesn't require the wifi signal enabled and it can work also with GPRS phones (Blackberry, Nokia, Samsung ...)

Thanks! Now I understand where exactly the obstacle lies. One further question, is it possible to fake that connection, to deceive Gingerbread?

As Samsung Galaxy S2 and S3 now do support RSAP again it would really be a nice feature to establish a DUN-Connection to my VW.
The premium hands free of VW (and Seat) has a built in Modem, so your phone can have a internet connection while RSAP is active...
This would be really appreciated for Android 4.1, because Google NOW needs also internet connection to get traffic information and so on...
BlueVPN does work with VW, but not all apps do recognize the internet connection... so google maps for example does not !

Just got the Nexus 7 - my first Android device. I didn't expect it not having such basic thing as BT DUN client. BlueVPN works for Chrome but most other apps just say that there's no connection. Google, please, you have to implement this for the next update.
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #118
Applications that use the Download Manager have problems with VPN connections due to an Android bug:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33666
In particular, BlueVPN cannot redirect the network traffic in these cases.
