STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Follow the instructions here to have "BuildConfig.DEBUG" constant on debug&release being different:

Meaning have this class with different values for the constant on ...\app\src\release\java\... and ...\app\src\debug\java\...:

package com.lb.myapplication

object BuildConfig {
    const val DEBUG: Boolean = ...
}

Alternatively, import the attached project.

2. Have some condition that uses the created constant. Example:

if(BuildConfig.DEBUG){
    Log.d("AppLog", "debug!")
}else{
    Log.d("AppLog", "release!")
}

3. Look at what the IDE says...

The bug is that it claims it's always true/false, so it should be simplified and remove parts of it, but this is not true, because on debug and on release, the values are different.
