Oh and by the way, where is the undo feature in the android feature request system? Just found, after some more extended searching, another issue (6458) which marked the lack of undo functionality as a defect instead of a feature request.
ad...@gmail.com <ad...@gmail.com> #3
Just lost a ton of work trying to navigate a whole email with the two lines of text you get to see. No undo to fix it. Shameful to be missing such an integral feature that has been in computers for a long time now.
su...@googlemail.com <su...@googlemail.com> #4
Yes, please! Especially since Alt+Backspace will delete an entire line or paragraph, which I sometimes do on accident.
ke...@gmail.com <ke...@gmail.com> #5
Please get undo option into the OS.
su...@googlemail.com <su...@googlemail.com> #6
IMHO THE major downside of Android is text editing- I thought it couldn't be much of an issue on my Desire Z until I found out... Get us an UNDO function! PLZZZ!!
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #7
Yes please... even my many Sidekicks had an undo (menu key +z). It's pretty unbelievable that the G2 and other prosumer Android phones don't have this feature.
op...@gmail.com <op...@gmail.com> #8
The undo function is absolute necessity. Please add it. I'm on HTC desire HD. Also realized this feature is not available on Android. It's a huge flaw in Android without it.

Nothing more annoying than mangling good text by accident and trying to fix it up on an android phone. Sooo painful. Thanks.

Undo is a basic requirement of any good modern OS.

Not only within apps: I've also been bitten while trying to add a comment to a blog, accidentally hit some button that took me away from that page, and no way to get back to my part-entered comment. Lesson for now: don't use Android device for that kind of activity, go find a proper computer.
Generally, I think that as a read-only device, it works well. But as a data entry/capture device, there's a l-o-n-g way to go.
(Galaxy Tab, Android 2.2, using mNote linked to SimpleNote, and Dolphin browser.)

a near perfect os, and quite a major oversight.
re...@gmail.com <re...@gmail.com> #15
This seems to be the most obviously overlooked but useful feature on the platform. The problem is even more pronounced on honeycomb since post people are trying to use their tablets as a laptop replacements but without undo that becomes a very tricky proposition. Google please put this feature into the os so all exixsting apps can get it for free.
na...@gmail.com <na...@gmail.com> #16
This is a feature of such high necessity, I couldn't even call it a feature. It's a function that just NEEDS to be in any OS.
su...@googlemail.com <su...@googlemail.com> #17
This really inexplicable omission is made absolutely infuriating by the behavior of a physical keyabord that will cause the OS to frequently delete entire lines of typed text at a time. While there is an explainable cause for the deletions, it's SO easy to have happen due to the poor implementation of the Fn key functionality.

. . Comming from an Touch Pro 2 (Windows Mobile with full qwerty, modifier keys and arrows keys) I find this lack of "ctrl+c", "ctrl+v", "ctrl+x" and "ctrl+z" (or command, if you're into mac) disgusting. Also, most of the screens doesn't have a "cancel" button. Say you started to edit a field and changed your mind about the changes. There is no way of canceling the changes and getting the original value back into the input.

I "upgraded" to the Sidekick 4G from an earlier Sidekick and just figured I couldn't find the "undo" feature. Finally came online to find help. It never occurred to me that it might be absent. Goodness gracious. Especially with the lack of arrow keys and over-sensitive touch screen. The latter wouldn't be so noticeable and aggravating if a quick "Menu + Z" or something would undo the last one or two actions. I am used to using my sidekick for all kinds of things, but this one has me running for my laptop (a much heavier alternative!) for anything remotely important.

This is outrageous. Especially considering how poor the copy and paste is.
I was trying to select some text in a huge forum post I had written and I couldn't select what I wanted, the markers kept moving around all over the place. Eventually the whole piece of text I had selected got dragged into another section of the text and there was not way to undo. I had to scrap it and re-write a huge section of the post. Please add this basic feature ASAP. I hate to say it but Apple has a huge win in this area, the undo on my iPhone 4 works beautifully.

I would have no hesitation, from a developer's point of view, marking this enhancement as HIGH PRIORITY, but i'm not employed at google, and it seems they are too much busy on UI whistles to really take care of text editing usability, that is utterly bad implemented so far.
The bare minimum would be (1) Undo feature Ctrl+Z, (2) cursor support on virtual keypad, (3) common shortcuts for easy text navigation, like CTRL+ARROWS for move word by word, (4) Cut & Paste with hotkeys Ctrl+c/v .. Tablets ARE NOT PHONES, and many of them can take advantage of a phisical keyboard!

wi...@gmail.com <wi...@gmail.com> #73
Um, I may be wrong here, but it's my understanding that Android-- being open-source-- is (mostly, probably entirely) NOT Google's intellectual property, and thus it rests with the open-source development community for Android enhancements. Yes, Google developers do play a part, but it has never been Google's -=responsibility=- to do anything for Android. They just help the project along where they can, so I believe while it is valid to ask "Google, please work on this", I don't believe it's valid to assign *blame* to Google for missing functionality enhancements... That blame is simply misplaced, as the Android bugs that get worked on are (theoretically) the ones with the most stars. So you are correct about it needing more stars. After that, try to convince your software developer friends to work on it...
ax...@gmail.com <ax...@gmail.com> #74
It is indeed "open source" but keep in mind that the development process is not! Source code is generally released only AFTER a release version is completed, compiled and shipped. Therefore we can make lots of custom roms afterward, but not really modify the official release that is branded "Android" by Google.
You can contribute of course, but it is controlled by Google. From thesource.android.com FAQ: "There are some limits on the kinds of code contributions we are willing or able to accept. For instance, someone might want to contribute an alternative application API, such as a full C++-based environment. We would decline that contribution"
Since each app developer uses his own text input thingy I guess it would mean a quite significant API rewrite to make all text input route through an undo-capable API. It might even require app developers to slightly modify their apps to support the new undo API. I'd have to study the Android internal workings more to be shure though.
Back to the point: Google is not responsible for actually writing the code for undo, but they DO have the responsibility to actually put it in the release. Above all though I think it's a problem with complexity: each app handle text different. There exists no easy fix.

I'm unfortunately not skilled enough to give any contribution to android development, being too much biased developing for micro$oft platforms, but from a technical point of view i do not really believe that implementing an undo for common textbox inputs whould require any API redesign, as far as the undo buffer can be controlled using hotkeys, like Ctrl+Z, the same way as copy&paste does. Aftherall, a simple 1-slot undo buffer instead of a full blown undo implementation would represent a GIANT step forward anyway, compared to nothing at all. Can't see any complexity issues there, but i do not have the skill to verify. Anyone of you does ?

I think google guys will prioritize undo development into base infrastructure only when they realize that android is no longer limited to phones, but will gain market share on tablets and touch netbooks. In my humble opinion undo support is critical for serious editing, can you imagine a word suite without undo ? It's something you would like to thow out of the window after the first mistake, with the tablet follows as well. Is ICS targetted for tablet ? So it MUST have undo support, period.

Only to set the record straight and try to take some heat off of Google, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system) says that "The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android", AND PLEASE NOTE THAT IT DOES -=NOT=- SAY GOOGLE IS RESPONSIBLE, with a footnote to http://source.android.com/about/index.html As I understand it (and I admit I may very well be wildly off base), Google bought the Android's initial developer in 2005 and in 2007 opened up the source code and started the Open Handset Alliance, which was their way of saying "C'mon guys & gals at other companies, let's all work together on making better cell phones." And with the Android code being made open-source, it rests with the COMMUNITY to handle maintenance issues, NOT GOOGLE. They just helped the Android train start rolling, it's up to the community to drive. Sure, Google might pitch in here or there on Android development, but that in no way makes it their -=responsibility=- to do so. So as I understand it, you definitely DO need to star issues that you want to get worked on, as the issues with the -=most stars=- are the ones that are at the top of the Android developers' //TODO lists and get worked on by member companies of the Open Handset Alliance. (and maybe individuals?)
If you can't cut code (welcome, join the crowd), I believe that all we can do is star the issues we care about and wait.
If you can't cut code (welcome, join the crowd), I believe that all we can do is star the issues we care about and wait.
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #91
Actually, I don't think that is true. The source is not available to the public as part of AOSP until after Google writes the latest version. The community has zero input in the coding of the OS. That is until after it is released, but community code doesn't make it to the releases, I believe. It is open source only in the sense that anybody can rewrite it for their own purposes. I am really disappointed that I have been following this for maybe close to 2 years and still no movement on the topic. I don't just want undo, I want redo too. Simple to implement and wildly useful. Just standard stuff. Please do it Google.
ew...@gmail.com <ew...@gmail.com> #92
After reading what everyone has written here, and on other forums, would it really matter if I, too, complained of no undo function? Countless times I've accidentally erased text, whether by backspacing too much, or a copy/paste error, or accidentally navigating away from a page, only to have no way of undoing my blunder. I imagine Google only does what Google wants, not what the end-users want. Hence, no undo function for two years, and none in ICS. Thanks Google.
ph...@gmail.com <ph...@gmail.com> #93
I have lost text from several emails and/or on web browsers after somehow hitting the wrong key. The lack of an "undo" key is unacceptable in this day and age. Honestly, people are paying hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars on android smart/super phones and tablets - there should be a list of criteria that are mandatory to include in systems such as Android, for quality control. I have lost countless hours through having this happen routinely - I do try to type in a word processing program and copy and paste - but I don't always remember to do this when replying to emails in a hurry. One of the sole purposes of the Android system is to be able to send and receive emails (and the like) - I consider an "undo" feature to be necessary, when typing - especially considering the sometimes sporadic behavior of touch pads. I was going to upgrade to a Google Nexus for my next phone, and buy an Asus Eee PC prime - I am certainly glad I discovered this issue first - as to purchase these systems as a university student in a professional program would be to throw my money away [without a rudimentary 'undo']...
ra...@gmail.com <ra...@gmail.com> #94
I'm tired of loosing text in my mails due to hitting by mistake in wrong keys and not being able to undo the typing. This is not a OS to equip plain mobile phones, it is supposed to be the OS of smartphones and tablets - devices to be used in offices and homes allowing people to write documents, messages, and so on. If android wants to be more than an OS for gamming devices it needs to be focused for business needs. Not having an UNDO is just ridiculous. Im my company there are plenty of IOS users they just laugh when to my suprise I discovered in my supposed in my uber new Samsung Galaxy S2 I couldn't have something so basic like undoing typed text.

Issue pain X # of complaints
= Total level of pain
With the pain/sadness this issue causes multiplied by the number of complaints, are there any issues causing greater pain in the android community? Anyone have a list of those that are currently higher?
Out of curiosity, who decided leaving this out was more critical than inclusion? I assume that must have been a really cool discussion, or a really silly mistake, because this is quite painful.

Google was and still is ignoring Undo completely, no review, no owner, no plan. If you look at tests in magazines comparing Android with iOS this functionality isn't mentioned and therefore the lack of it is not a problem for Google.
So to put some pressure on them, we should advertise the issue better, in forums, comments, blogs etc.

I love most of the new features in ICS, but I can't believe that there is no undo or cancel option whilst editing a contact in the new People app.
Accidentally erased a few digits of a friend's phone number and when i realized what had happened, couldn't figure out how to cancel the changes. So thinking logically, I figured I could press back instead of hitting 'save', which intuitively should revert the change, but alas it 'saves' the changes instead hahaa. And since I have my contacts conveniently synced, the change already propagated online to my gmail contacts.
*Sigh* I've had an android phone over 3 years now and never realized such a minor yet critical feature was missing. Please fix Google!

Is it possible that this is a patent issue? e.g. maybe a Microsoft or Apple patent is preventing Android developers from implementing this feature? Seems unlikely since the "undo" feature is implemented on every other computing platform I have used in the last 10 years or more.

@customecraze, it's very unlikely a patent for undo feature do really exist.
The reason for lack of undo implementation i think have it's root on the fact that Android has been created with mobile phones in mind, so without any physical keyboard it has been considered an useless feature. Buto it is becoming a *critical* feature for tablets. I hope developers will consider seriously adding undo in 5.0 ...

Cool thing: using a BlueTooth keyboard to enter large amount of text on my Android mobile device. Very UNcool thing: losing hours of meticulous editing work when hit a couple of wrong keys, with no apparent way to "undo" to back up a few steps before the deletion. Arghhhhhhh! Please, guys!
ka...@gmail.com <ka...@gmail.com> #104
I know this must not be easy to implement but it just has to be part of the os for any text object. When you add features like acceleration of the delete key you can't possibly think people can control it acc... DAMN! I am NOT retyping all that again.
ka...@gmail.com <ka...@gmail.com> #105
Imho not having any way to undo modifications in text fields is like not having breaks in your car. :-( Obviously Google did "skip" this feature on purpose. It'd be nice at least to know what they had in mind when it was decided not to implement any undo ability. The uncertainity about annoyances like this make people anxious. Communicating with users would make them already half-way happy. :-)

This is a huge issue for my productivity and the usefulness of my Samsung Galaxy Note. Finding applications for Chinese character input was the first frustration. Having been satiated with finding something suitable and easy to use, accidentally erasing a paragraph of characters with no way to retrieve it is uber-frustrating. This most basic and useful option should be a top priority. I have spoken highly about the Galaxy Note and have been an advocate in the promotion of it as an upgrade from the iPhone. Now my line will be, "It is good BUT..."

Please god add this. I use ALT a lot on my Sidekick 2, I type very fast, and sometimes I will accidentally hit del before hitting a key I meant to. This results in all the text I've just written being deleted. So frustrating to have no hotkey to undo this.

Fuck /YES/.
Gawd. I mostly use my phone for messaging & writing documents/notes... very long messages/docs/notes - I pre-write my blog articles on there for crying out loud.
The number of times I have had to start over COMPLETELY from scratch because I accidentally hit delete or paste instead of copy because the two buttons are so damn close together on the touch screen - which can be finicky half the time as we all know - even with /my/ small fingers, I'm talking near child-sized, and it's not like it asks you to confirm or anything either... I lose about half my work/messages on average. It's enough that I'm /almost/ willing to consider using a damn /windows/ phone or /blackberry/ despite all their horrible issues, and I work off a mac... do I really need to explain my feelings about windows BSOD or blackberries network & feature issues?

I've got no idea why Undo is not available in Android.
I've used Windows-mobile for years and years and just wanted an "upgraded" change.
Unfortunately Android lags behind in many respects.
Just like other users I've been stung by the lack of undo where I was composing a long text with some medical words (so took quite long to manage with the swype/autocorrect etc.) Just before sending the text I thought I'll copy the contents & add to one of my Calendar entries. I selected the text, and mistakenly hit the Paste button.
Then I looked for an UNDO function by long-press, keyboard, menu key, back key but NOTHING!
My old Sony-Ericsson non-smart ("dumb") phone has copy, cut, paste and undo so why doesn't Android have it.
Are there no plugins either?

Please add undo!! It's just absurd not to have it. Just readjusting the way you are holding the phone can cause you to inadvertently highlight and delete large chunks of text (I don't know how, but it just happened to me.) If you are going to have text entry on a touch screen phone, you simply have to have UNDO.
Thank you!
Also, margins are almost non-existent which makes selecting a complete line of text really difficult.

I find it borderline negligent of Android (Google) for not get their act together on this. It's been YEARS NOW. if they can't implement this by their next release... I say: BUY AN IPAD OR A WINDOWS 8 DEVICE. It's seemingly such an obvious everyday task. People have begging for this for years.

I am dumbfounded as I just made transition from iOS (shake undo.) To Droid OS (your screwed:no rudimentary undo.) Thank you Peter this is negligent and just cost me a lot of money and time. I have every apple device and wanted to try something else so I got a xoom, droid tab, nexus 7, and galaxy s3. My apple stuff has had few issues, my Mac Pro had some trouble and they sent me another Apple TV to compensate my time. My nexxus has broken twice now in 2 monthes and Google wont do anything! They tell me to take it back and I did the first time and now I just am really disappointed. I got the iPad 3 and honestly was perferring the nexxus 7 for certain things. It wont even respond to any touch again, I hope google will maybe respond and I will update this comment, but I am not holding my breath Ive already delt with countless rude salespeople over the phone pissed about having to do customer service duties and not sell me something (though they still try.) I shall keep all posted and hopefully someday soon we can undo our deletes!

PLS PLS PLS, how do you undo? I swear I thought I lived in the new millenia. Well, POOH, I just lost an entire text that took me 1hr to type, due to accidentally pushing paste {Since there is no text displayed, just icons in edit mode. And no I am not a new user, I have had my phone for cpl months, with ICS oper sys. Just sometimes get icons confused due to not using this operating system long enough to operate my device in an "autopilot' type of manner.} So I accidentally pushed paste instead of copy. GREAT, pooh this is so unfortunate...And worst part is, I own an iphone also, and it has shake to edit n undo n redo, and does it HOWEVER MANY TIMES you need it to keep redoing or undoing, NO limit. I Knew I should've typed it on my iphone. Im honestly not going to be able to use my android phone til this feature that is so simple and so 1980s capable, is added. Unfortunate and pooh is all I can say bc I love my Galaxy Note! Not for long tho...IPHONE IT IS :( BC typing is NUMBER 1 on list of most impt & Most used antics when operating/using any device.

Agree with 4 comments I quickly scanned, all stating that this is not good as we've just newly switched from iphones and this is the first sign we get. :( First horrible sign that is btw. Also agree that google bigwigs are prob using iphones. ;) And also agree that with the drag n drop feature being so touchy, or out-of-whack, or mind-of-its-own sometimes, which no windows phone or iphone is, yet with that touchy outta-whack "feature" this is the only operating system without the undo/Redo feature, whereas other Phones/Operating systems aren't touchy and still have undo for "just in case typing errors". And, to think that this voting enabled petition was started over a year ago, with several ICS operating system updates and let alone the new Jelly Bean OS, how is it within over a year of requesting it there has been no answer nor action taken place yet? Love you android, please answer your 250 customers!

undo is a must-have (not a nice-to-have) for a touch-screen mobile device. About the hardest thing to do reliably on a smart phone is enter text with the on-screen keyboard, and it's also the most error prone. IMO, undo is most important to recover from a delete/backspace that ended up taking a sentence, rather than just a few letters or a word.

Typing a letter, I highlighted a couple of paragraphs intending to copy/paste them. My finger slipped and pressed the space bar. The paragraphs I had so carefully worded were gone with no way to undo the space bar press. This is a glaring oversight in the design am otherwise very useful OS. I hope it is rectified soon.

Still waiting for undo.
(I just tried to write a review in Google Play, first I deleted a complete line trying to navigate, because the on screen keyboard covered the text, but it did not let me scroll the text to visible area..., then I accidentally touched the back button and the whole text disappeared... You know fun stuff. I guess Google is trying to teach us not to try producing content, just consume it?)

As great as Android has gotten recently I am amazed that it does not have this basic, useful, and necessary feature. Please get "undo" in the works to a point where it works the same across all applications that have areas for text entry or some kind of editing like drawing. Triple tap maybe? Double counter-clock spin of the finger on the display? Longpress menue selectable option alongside the copy, cut, paste items?

bl...@gmail.com <bl...@gmail.com> #202
Guys SERIOUSLY, the Android OS is as good as it gets, hands down & no questions asked but to have an OS that's been around as long as Android has and to STILL not have a basic, generic Undo command when you're long pressing inside a text entry field is just a shame! I mean for CHRIST's sake we can watch LIVE TV and video chat for FREE with people from all around the world but it's so primitive to have deliberately left out the Undo function. Has Google even responded to this thread yet which is over 2 YEARS old or do they turn a deaf ear when it comes to something so basic...I bet they're trying to dream up the next personally invasive feature to shove down our throats...just another feature we'll be forced to put up with...ok that's enough for now I "don't want to be evil" so I'll shut up and hope for some kind of answer one day maybe......and maybe the answer won't be this generic nonsense they always throw out at us!
Keep posting guys & gals!!! Maybe one day they'll get the hint that it's embarrassing to have left out something as basic as UNDO!

Longtime iOS user and avid writer -- recently bought a Nexus 7 for the main purpose of writing on it with a Bluetooth keyboard. At first, when my ctrl+Z function didn't work, I assumed it was a keyboard compatibility issue... little did I know that it was a system-wide problem with "fix-it" cries from as little as half a day ago! I have so far been impressed with all the ways in which Android is more intuitive to a power user than iOS, but the omission of a simple undo function -- especially on an OS now implemented on tablets -- is a huge blow to my motivation to use it. I love my new tablet, love my new OS, but without an Undo function, I can't promise that I won't be eyeing iOS devices and regretting my decision despite all the other great features.
tr...@gmail.com <tr...@gmail.com> #217
Of course Android will be much better with the Undo function. Just think about the time that this function has saved users of other operating systems throughout its history. From that point of view we can say that Undo is a function of "public utility". Please do not let it go away in mobile computing.

Ahh! You've just selected a giant block of text. It's perfect, spell-checked and ready to be copied into it's destination app to be saved or submitted. Your finger hovers over the copy button. Then someone bumps into you. You look again and all your beautiful text is gone. The frustration! A huge portion of your day wasted.
This happens all of the world hundreds and thousands a time each day. All of it could be completely avoided if a developer takes the time to incorporate an "undo" function into android.

Our technological achievement is growing more rapidly in the exponential sense that surpasses our understanding of the new in the not too near distant future. Almost all advanced software and hardware stem from something simple and small, like creating a global undo ability for all text written on an OS. Taking one or any small and mundane function out of any software, especially if people use it and everyone knows of it is the equivalency of going back in time concerning logistics in technological achievement importance. Your surveys may show that many people do not use an undo button or have the need for it so therefore it isn't needed because it wouldn't be a worthwhile gain for the majority at large. This is from a marketing point of view, however, if you go deeper into this understanding as to who would need or use an undo feature, you begin to realize it shows a major flaw in the system. People that enjoy writing, typing, using their words and creative writing skills no matter it be a work of art novel or a simple text use their minds to accomplish this because it feels good to speak well. It's something that many enjoy. When some text becomes deleted and their is no way to retrieve said text these people, such as myself become frustrated and if it was important or a long amount of information, will then not try as hard in the second time rewriting it. So, there are two solid points to my argument, you will have people that will have decrease of respect for your hard work in a great operating system, and you lack techs abilities to enhance and create something advanced in one field of software development. There is a hole in your OS. Even my alarm clock has an undo button. A simple, 1,000 byte system catch would suffice. Something that was created with the dawn of the technological age is now not included in Star Trek time, a computer that fits, in the palm of my hand. Please fix.

I was on a very heated support call about an issue that has been going on for over a month and they gave me a confirmation code. They wouldn't email it to me and I was without paper, so I wrote the code down in my email app along with the phone number I was supposed to call tomorrow to finally get my dispute resolved. After hanging up I realized that my face had been pressed up against the delete key and the phone number and most of my confirmation code are now gone! I spent an hour on the phone and now I have no way to contact them tomorrow to resolve this. I shook my phone instinctively because I had Apple a while back and that saved my butt many times. I could go back to Apple just for this. They might be bugged, but Apple never lost my information like this.
An undo would be remarkably easy to add (coming from a programmer). It amazes me that I have to ask for this when it was asked for 3 years ago.

Most of us have lost text that we've typed into a webform or into an email using Chrome and/or Gmail on Android.
Currently, there are dozens of tickets in Google's bug tracker software bemoaning the lack of access to the Undo / Redo feature built into Android but inaccessible to users. These tickets keep getting tagged "Won't Fix" by developers.
I've suggested to CloudHQ that they provide an Undo / Redo extension for Chrome and Gmail that provides UI access to the Undo / Redo feature.
Google has provided UI access to Undo / Redo in their Android office apps including Docs and Sheets, but not in Chrome or Gmail.
Searching the Google Play Store for Undo, I found two imperfect apps that do not replace the keyboard but "listen" to what is typed to provide multiple Undo and Redo.
Inputting+ app -- This looked promising, with floating visual Undo / Redo / Find / Replace buttons. Doesn't work with web UI yet per developer (so no good for Chrome). Didn't work on my Android phone in other contexts. Might be a permissions issue. Might conflict with the keyboard contextual menu or cliptray. I don't know. Might just be out of date, per recent reviews. Reviewers on Google Play said that recent updates broke the app and that it hasn't been updated in a year.
Typing Control app -- This app uses the volume control long press up and down buttons for multiple Redo and Undo. This app worked for me in all contexts. The limitation is that this app only seems to work while the text box is in focus continuously. And it's not in the visual UI as users expect. What is missing is visual feedback. I'd suggest flashing an Undo or Redo icon over the text and/or using Undo / Redo sounds. (Also, the short-press feature of moving the cursor forward and backward seems does not function as expected, jumping the cursor on first use to the beginning or end of the text in the text area. Facebook has also had issues with cursor placement recently, so it may be an Android issue.)
Still, the biggest issue that causes the most heartache seems to be that neither Chrome nor Gmail has implemented a visually accessible UI for Undo/Redo for its text areas -- and this needs to be fixed.
In the meantime, the Typing Control app solves this with the fewest bugs and UI conflicts by using the Volume Up/Down buttons for Undo/Redo.

Device : Nexus S
Type : GSM
OS : Android 4.0.3
Country: USA
I am also facing the same issue. But recently overnight it drained from full charge to around 20% (see screenshot 1). I am sleeping and phone is locked, but phone is not sleeping ;)
One thing that I was puzzled was 'keep awake' time. 'CPU total' for 'Android OS' is in few mins, but 'keep awake' is several hours. I was puzzled and decided to keep tab on the battery usage graph.
First, switched to stock Launcher (Yes, I was using Go Launched Ex). Not much improvement. Thought of doing a reset, but don't want to go through the pain of restoring from backup, installing apps, etc. (see screenshot 2)
Next, my suspicion was on Facebook notifications. I had couple of unread old messages in Facebook. It used to pop up in the notification area and I clear the notification area. This has been the routine. So, visited Facebook and took care of unread old messages. BINGO. I was amazed to see my battery graph (see screenshot 3).
My current battery graph is screenshot 4.
My inference with these is: Items in notification area contribute to "keep awake" time which drains the battery.
NOTE: I still have all my (100+) apps installed, syncing enabled, etc. WiFi/Data always on.
Suggestions: (also to validate my inference)
(1) Take care of items in notification area, so as not to get the same notification again and again.
(2) If (1) doesn't help, and if you have items like temperature in the notification bar, try disabling that. Keep the notification bar clean.
(3) When you see any notification, act immediately (clear notifications).
Did any or all of these improve your battery draining?
Android developer, please post the root cause or what is the current state of this issue, then we will understand that your eyes are on this issue too.

I've had my Galaxy Nexus for almost 3 weeks now and I am experiencing exactly what everyone else here is with regards to the high Android OS usage killing my battery. I can still get decent standby time if the phone is just sitting idle, sometimes a little over two days, but I think it would be much more than that if something wasn't keeping the phone awake so much. I really hope the 4.0.3 update will address this issue as it's the only thing about the phone I haven't been happy with so far.

I have done 2 things in the last several days: signed out of Google Talk and signed out of G+. My issues with high Android OS have reduced (from over 50% to down at 28%), and I am liking my charge a lot better because of it....but really? This is a Google Phone? Why am I having to log out of Google Apps to be able to use my phone for more than 6 hours at a time? I am having the same issues with High Android OS as all of the above 200+ comments..... Can we get a response from Sam/Google or is it just the version that I have that has this issue? I am on 4.0.2 VZW and everything is still stock.

Additonally, even at times when this issue is not triggered, I'm lucky to get 20 hours out of my phone with moderate usage, low brightness, no background apps syncing and all other antennas switched off.
I can't understand what the obsession is with OEMs preferring to compete for the thinnest form-factor. Instead I would be a MUCH happier person with a slightly thicker phone carrying a more beefed up battery, and would surely be willing to pay a bit more to cover the cost of it! And no, I'm not willing to settle for an after-market, sub-standard, supposedly high-capacity battery, particularly with the complexity of the NFC being present within the battery in the newer phones.
I am sure most other users will agree as it would allow them to freely use the phone without worrying about the battery dying out late in the evening in an hour of need!!
Google.. please consider this for the next NEXUS, whenever that might be!!!!!!!!!

Same issue for me. Had my phone less than a week and am disappointed with the battery life. Hoping a software update will take care of this. Shouldn't be dropping so fast with little use. Attached screenshots are from a day with just over an hour's worth of use. Lasted over 12 hours on battery, but would have expected battery drain to be much lower when the phone was not in use. Instead, it's a fairly constant drop off, with some slightly larger dips during use.

Hi Everyone. I had this same problem with the high Android OS battery drain when I 1st got my Galaxy Nexus.
For me it turned out that when the phone tried to sink it would start running a "debuggerd" system service which would make the OS sit at a constant average of 30% utilisation.
This can be checked to see if it is running by downloading "OS Monitor" from the market. Run the app and open settings and turn off "hide system process"
For myself By switching the sink of google plus, browser, calender and photos (not sure if it is only one or all of these as I dont actually need to sink any of them so turned them all off) and then turning off and re-starting the phone the "debuggerd" system service does not start and the OS % now sits and 0-2% while the phone is at rest and the S batter usage is at only 11%
I hope this helps.

I have found that disabling location services will allow my phone to be idle whereas when enabled it stays awake.
fa...@gmail.com <fa...@gmail.com> #306
I have found (and read online) that "Android OS" is simply everything that the battery usage app couldn't distinguish as a separate process; so it groups all those apps and processes together as if saying "Everything Else"...
This is what's making it really hard on everyone to know for sure what is it that's draining the battery and keeping the system awake.
However, I have DISABLED a bunch of google apps in the Manage Apps setting (settings->apps->all apps). It's the new feature in ICS which allows the user Disable an app if it cannot be uninstalled. System is now even better than gingerbread with battery consumption. The free space in memory was more than welcome...
i disabled the following:
- GMail App (One of the big players. I'm Using Exchange Server for Hotmail while forwarding all my gmail to hotmail for now. For some reason, when i have my gmail synced, the battery drain is just BAD, but exchange server does really fairly OK(Push notifications for exchange are even better than the GMail App :S). I REALLY prefer the Gmail App over the regular EMail app, but oh well, I'll just wait for a fix.)
- Google Bookmark sync (don't think it's one of the main players, but disabled it anyway)
- Market Updater (I wouldn't want automatic updates anyway)
- Network Location (i seriously think this is the main thing causing the battery drain, and i wasn't sure that disabling it in the Location Services menu was enough, but it helped big time...)
- News and Weather (for some darn reason, this app stays in memory)
- Talk (this app always stays in memory although i'm signed off and don't use google talk)
- Voice Dialer (not interested)
You guys can even disable more of the things you don't need. Trust me, battery life and overall system performance will be VERY noticeable.
I'm eager for a proper fix for all these, I really want to use most of the apps I disabled, but for now, the trade wasn't that bad.

I had the same issue on my Nexus S (S-LCD) (manually updated to 4.0.3, no wipe)
My worst battery runtime was 6h (without usage), average was 18 hours.
With GB two days without charging were no problem.
After trying several tips I have back again the same battery perfomance like with GB!
What I've done?
Sign out from Google+ and Talk and stopped the apps. The Apps will start again, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.
Now my battery last for over two days again :)

I can conclude that this issue has been RESOLVED on my phone. If someone can try this and share with us the results.

As simple as it can be. Plug the USB cable from PC/Laptop to the phone and you will get a notification "USB Connected". Pull down the notification bar and touch that notification. Then touch the Turn On USB Storage, let the phone be charged, touch Turn Off USB Storage and see if battery lasts more.

Thanks @astrit. I don't see that option when connecting the GN to USB to charge. The only options I have are 'Media Device (MTP)' and 'Camera (PTP)'. Could it be that since GN does not support USB Mass Storage and has no SD Card slot the option doesn't exist for this device?

sc...@gmail.com <sc...@gmail.com> #319
@astrit i guess that's probably because the gnex has no sd card and sees the memory as one large volume so UMS is not needed? It's actually kind of cool to plug the phone in to USB and see it as an external hard drive using MTP. Don't have to worry about managing memory to the SD card vs. device. It's all accessible to all media, documents, etc. 32GB is enough memory for my use for the foreseeable future. But it's still a battery pig and needs a fix badly. :(

I had this issue and discovered that BlueTooth was keeping my device awake all the time. I first removed an app that was using bluetooth, and just now I also just deactivated bluetooth on the device. TBD whether this will help but I'll report back.
To see what's specifically keeping your device awake, you can dump a bug report. You can usually hold both the volume up and volume down buttons, then press the power button -- in your email drafts, you'll then see a bug report that you can email yourself. For some reason this doesn't work sometimes for me. If it doesn't work, if you happen to have the Android SDK on your computer, you can run adb bugreport > mybugreport.txt from the command line to dump it into a text file.
Search that mybugreport.txt doc for "Statistics since last charge:" You'll see a list of the things that have been keeping the device awake, and for how long. For me, it was BTLowPower that had kept the kernel constantly awake.

Hey Everyone, I just wanted to share with you my before and afters of my GNEX 4.0.2 battery stats. So I'm a pretty heavy user hands down, and this phone hasn't let me use it to it's potential. When I first got it I was only getting 4-5hrs. 10hrs max not touching it. *Note* Avast AV is not an issue at all and made little to no impact on battery use.
Out of box set up: 4-5hrs with 2 hours screen on time. 10 hours with 30 mins screen on.
Setup now: 5-8 hours with 1 hours screen on time. 2 days 20 mins screen off. *2 days is extremely light usage.
Settings now: NFC OFF, Wifi sleep: Only when connected, DATA off when not in use. 30% screen brightness. *switching data off was the biggest helper. even the 3g is eating my battery fairly quick.
My android OS is still being kept awake for majority of uptime =/ I have no idea what is causing it.

Yes, please make android OS more efficient as sleeping with the radios on. Airplane mode solves the battery drain issue for me, and being connected to a wifi network seems to solve it as well. But mobile networks appear to continually wakelock the cpu/system causing too much battery drain.
A built in sleep mode where the device can be programmed to do less or no network authentication and syncing would be helpful.

where did they come up with the battery life stats for this phone?
(Stand-by Up to 290 h (2G) / Up to 270 h (3G), Talk time Up to 17 h 40 min (2G) / Up to 8 h 20 min (3G))
Even with the most aggressive battery management policy (turning almost everything off) the phone's battery life isn't even close to this. Even with just sitting idle with 3G only the best you could hope for is about 15 - 20 hours of standby and maybe 4 1/2 - 5 hrs of talk. 270 hrs? No way.

I've had similar problems with my Nexus but stumbled upon something from someone claiming his Maps was always in his recent applications even after a clean reset. I drained the life of my battery, then charged it up and removed the update to Maps. I then did another power cycle and loan behold Maps wasn't on the recent applications list. I did a clean swipe of my phone today and haven't ran Maps yet so I am convinced the update for Maps is our culprit. Anyone else have similar results?

I am having the exact same problem; very high keep awake time (almost constantly awake) on a GSM Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.2. I have had the phone since December, but the problem just started last week. Before then, I was getting 3 days / charge with minimal usage, but now I can't get through a single day. I noticed today that when I go to Settings > Data usage, it hangs. When I try to submit a bug report, it still hangs! Someone else is having this problem (see here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24611 ), so it might be worth a look to see if this is what's responsible.

My co-worker and I both got the Galaxy Nexus around the same time. Her's eats through battery life and mine does not. So we started comparing settings and usage. The big difference is the amount of battery used by "Cell standby" (in settings under Device select "Battery" to view). Her battery use from "Cell standby" was 36% while mine was 4% (big difference). We touched the "Cell standby" usage meter on each phone to view more details. We discovered the "Time without a signal" on her phone was 51% and on my phone was 0% (huge difference). Then, holding our phones side-by-side, we noticed that her 4G bars were gray while mine are blue (she had no signal!). We realized her phone was wasting battery by constantly searching for a cell signal. I remembered something a Verizon Wireless support technician had me do when I first got my phone because I had no 4g signal. I tried these steps on her phone, as follows:
1) While the phone is fully powered on, remove the battery. According to the technician, the phone must be powered on when you remove the battery for this to work.
2) Remove the 4G SIM card by pushing it further up into its metal sheath until you hear a click. Then, it will spring back and you can slide it out. According to the VW technician, do not touch the gold contact on the bottom of the card.
3) Wait about 30 seconds.
4) Slide the SIM card back into its sheath and push it in until you hear/feel a click.
5) Insert the battery and install the cover.
6) Power up the device
After completing these steps, the number and color of her phone's 4G bars were the same as mine. Time will tell if this improves her battery life.
Any insight into why Verizon's 4G network is so quirky with the Galaxy Nexus is welcome.

The culprit is indeed Google Maps. I uninstalled the updates and now my battery is better than it has ever been. It's been on for 1 day, 10 hrs. and I'm still at 65% with moderate use(a couple phone calls, some texts and a few market downloads). Thanks to those that made the suggestion to uninstall the Maps updates.

can someone please report back here and let me know if you have this same issue. I've uninstalled Maps updates and disabled it. After a while i go check and it has been re-enabled and updated. I kept disabling it. After a while i also disabled automatic market update/downloads and then uninstalled the Maps updates and disabled it, thinking that maybe when it would auto update that it would also re-enable itself. It still re-enables itself. Can someone tell me if they have the same issue.

Also uninstalled map updates, will post as soon as Ive enough data. Had about %60 Android OS and %30 screen after i rooted. Before I had everything on normal and could go on for 1.5 days with a %100 battery.
I also had the battery indicator issue but that has resolved itself? I dont know honestly.

Sorry if someone has said this before. I've had the galaxy nexus since November. Pretty soon after I got it I noticed large battery drain and worked out that mine was as a result of google location services. I disable everything in location services in settings and my battery life easily gets me through the day. Obviously battery life does also depend on signal strength so if your seeing a lot of grey in that network signal strength bar in battery stats that will also accelerate battery drain. Apologies if its all been said before.

I uninstalled the Google maps update and it has sort of fixed my issue.
My battery survives for almost 36 hours with decent usage not heavy usage.
Android os usage goes upto 30% at times.
Another thing is I have full network coverage but it still says that my cell standby takes 7% of my battery and time without a signal is 100%.
Anyone facing the same issue?

astrit.m...@gmail.com suggestion helped my Nexus S with a manual update to ICS 4.0.3. He suggested you plug in the USB, turn on USB storage, allow it to charge fully, turn off USB storage, then unplug. After I did this the Gallery app was using a bunch of battery, so I stopped it and then my phone was finally able to enter deep sleep according to CPU spy. The "android OS" is still my biggest power draw, so there is still a problem, but being able to get into deep sleep has allowed me 20hrs on 50% charge with light to moderate use.

vzw LTE Galaxy Nexus.
Had this phone since release day, and this problem didn't crop up for me until last week. I disabled/uninstalled everything I'd added (or remembered updating), no luck.
Android OS still sucks more battery than the screen (!), and my battery graph traces a steady downhill, almost regardless of screen or app usage.
I'm charging my phone every chance I get throughout the day (with the extended battery), and still get low battery warnings regularly.
All this is new as of last week :P

I wonder if this could be a problem with calculating the remaining battery power... My Nexus S/4.0.3 was about to run out of juice (after only half a day), so I plugged it in and it immediately jumped to 43% charge! I unplugged it right away and was indeed able to use it for many more hours.

Just reset your phone to factory settings (google account will reinstall all your apps except third party which you can install yourself later or use Airdroid to export them). I had a battery life of 10h max and constant reboots and now i get 2 days under light usage and 17h under high moderate - heavy usage (screen brightness is at ~40%-50% I game for 2h, watch 1h of youtube vids oh HQ data and wifi and nfc on and constant calls and texts). I think they had a bugged preinstalled OS on there. The reset solved all my problems.
Also if you update to 4.02 from 4.01 your market and nfc will probably stop working. if you reset to factory while your phone is on 4.02, nfc and market will work again and you will be on 4.02 build from the start, not 4.01.
I hope this helps. I was really pissed off at the battery life and the poor OS but it turns it was just bugged. Galaxy Nexus is an amazing phone and I hope the rest of you will get to experience it once all the bugs have been sorted out. IF you're going to flash custome ROM, please don't forget to backup your stock ROM in case you have to return the phone. This way you can reflash the stock ROM before you take it in.

Having similar problems as everyone else. At night, I will charge my phone up to 100% before I go to bed, then, when I wake up in the morning, it will often have less than 50% battery after literally no use for 7 hours. Several times, it has drained itself down to zero. This is not acceptable simply because I use my phone quite frequently during the day, as well as an alarm, so I don't need to sit up at night wondering if my phone will wake me up the next day.

Same problem (Samsung Galaxy Nexus, 4.0.2 unrooted). The power drain is in some way connected to the NetworkLocationService started my Google Maps after the last update. If you kill it (with the Wifi off, I don't remember now?) the power consumption returns to "normal", unfortunately only till the next reboot or Maps restart.
I use the free JuiceDefender app now as a workaround, but with some tolerable drawbacks. From the power consumption of 60-70% during 8 hour, it decreased to 15-30% now.

My problems are a familiar story. However is a little different to everyone else
I've had my Google Galaxy Nexus since november and not had a simgle problem with it. Then earlier this week it started reporting that it was charging when not connected to anything. It also failed to charge while connected to the AC mains charger. Strangely the only thing it would charge off is my laptop. Stranger still is that it wouldnt connect to my desktop as debugger (so development on my game stopped).
I read online that the problem may be to do with the USB connector, so I cleaned the connector with IPA and tried mating, unmating a few times to clean the contacts.
This resulted in now being able to charge off mains. and be able to connect to the USB debugger! But, the device still shows the charging icon when its not connected to anything... however in the battery status activity it shows discarging!? Partial Result..
The very next day, the OS started consuming upwards of 50% even when in sleep. The screen used to be the number 1 place for battery use, however now its the android OS.
I should mention that I've had all the OTA Updates and am running ICS 4.0.4.
My battery dies completely from a full charge in under 12 hours without use.
when its down to about 15% it will be completely dead within the hour constantly blinking the battery low please charge message every couple of seconds (presumably due to the intermittency in charging and not charging state reporting). I also assume that this is perhaps related to the rapid discarge, as perhaps the phone is thinkng its being plugged in and disconnected rapidly which is causing some loop due to power switching interrupts or something.
Regardless of the cause, this is Absolutely unacceptable!
I cant believe that Google and Samsung havent made a statement of intent to fix this issue!?
I've defended Google At every oportunity possible and have had the HTC Hero, Transformer and now Galaxy Nexus.. I've been trying to convince my apple loving friends to change over to Android and singing its praises, and Now this complete lack of support for a massive issue is making a hypocrite out of me. Dont give them more ammunition and damage your brand on your "flagship" device. respect your customers and let us know when the problem will be fixed. Or if its a hardware fault, swallow your pride and perform a recall as this kind of thing will only damage your brand and hurt you in the long run.

After trying to find out what the problem is with batterystats and CPU Spy, I have discovered.
1: With Wifi on, the phone does not entern Deep Sleep. (99% of the time.)
2: batterystats does not list any wakelocks that causes thos behaviour.
3: The battery drain does not seem to show in the built-in battery stats in 4.0.3. Android OS shows as only 20% and the screen as 46% (which is arguably way to high when remaining battery is 23% and the screen has been on for only one hour). The drain seems to drain away unnoticed by the battery stats.
Using original 4.0.3 from Samsung (XXLPQ) Nordic version.

I noticed too an android OS usage of 29% whereas the screen was at 28% with stock Android 4.0.2 Samsung Nexus that I just got the other day, and wifi always on (on Verizon). It barely shows any running apps, so it's something else draining the battery... maybe a bad driver or something... without deeper instrumentation, it's hard to say/report anything.
I'd love to report more, but I dont have a tool that can provide CPU usage per process... maybe it's a bad process or a bad driver even..not sure. Any suggestions on how to collect more useful data so Google can attack this problem?
I just got the GNex last week so I'm a bit disheartened.. I dont want to return the phone.

Well, after weeks of waiting around for Google to actually do something about this problem and issue an update I decided to take matters into my own hands. I flashed my phone to the leaked 4.0.4 version of ICS and all I can say is the difference is NIGHT AND DAY! Before this update my Android OS was always at 25-35% and now it's constantly at 4-5% with incredible battery life. I can easily go a couple of days between charges with normal use. On top of that, the phone is much smoother and more responsive now where I felt it was a bit sluggish before this update. Overall, I am beyond happy and feel that this is the version of the phone that should have come out of the box. It's clear that 4.0.2 was not ready for prime-time and the phone never should have been released with anything less than this newest version.

On my GSM Nexus S (i9020T) this problem has been fixed by flashing the official ROM 4.0.4. Android OS battery usage is back down to 4%. Performance is improved as well.
Unfortunately, the 4.0.3 -> 4.0.4 ROM update zip can not be installed through the stock recovery, because of a failed assert. Flashing through ClockwordMod recovery works fine though, for people who don't want to wait for the OTA

It has been a few weeks since I upgraded my SGS2 to 4.0.3 and started to experience huge battery drain. I noticed that when I'm at work the drain stopped (only using 2G/3G at work). After a stay at a hotel I noticed that the drain was not so bad when connected to the hotel's WiFi network. So, I started to research the settings of my WiFi network and found that DTIM was set to 5. After changing it to 1 the heavy drainage stopped! My guess is that certain DTIM settings force the phone to wake and sleep constantly causing the phone to newer go into deep sleep, contrary to the intent of the DTIM setting. A screenshot shot shows how the drainage stops when I change the DTIM at the WiFi accesspoint about mid-time. During the test I didn't touch the phone.

I have this problem on my Galaxy Nexus and Im pretty sure its Bluetooth causing it. If bluetooth is off then the phone doesnt deep sleep. When I switch on bluetooth it goes into deep sleep so having bluetooth switched on actually saves me battery life.

Using cpuspy app from the market helps with diagnosing this. Deep Sleep shows as an unused state until I switch on bluetooth the deep sleep starts registering.

Send it back to Samsung and get a replacement or get it fix,
It is a hardware issue. not a software issue and there is no any procedure to get it fix...

Same issue here on Nexus S i9023 4.0.4... Android OS randomly starts sucking up huge amount of battery. One (temporary) solution I've found is to power off/on and/or delete all widgets, then remake them. There was a thread in xda that said widgets were the likely culprit as well.

On my Phone, it "Android System" which is eating up all the battery, is it related?
jc...@gmail.com <jc...@gmail.com> #394
My issue is the same as the one in comment #368 . I have an unrooted Nexus S 4g. The problem started while I was still on 2.3.7 (maybe 2 weeks ago, about the same time as the above poster). I noticed that my phone would say it was charging, even when it was unplugged. Even if it was powered down and unplugged the battery charging icon would show. I have tried soft resets, and this sometimes changes the status indicator. This is when I noticed my battery not lasting as long as it had been. I could normally get 12-15hrs with light to moderate usage, sometimes more. It dropped to 7hrs (ish) once this started. The phone gets warm (not hot) even when not being used. At the same time, I noticed the charge was actually going to 100%, when it had never gone above 95%. I do not know if this is related to the issue of the OS keeping the phone awake, because I didn't pay attention to the battery stats closely enough. I did notice that the battery drain graph stopped resetting when I plugged the phone in, and would show multiple days of use, where it had only shown since the last full charge.
Since I knew the 4.0.4 update was coming I dealt with it, hoping the issue would be solved by the update. It hasn't (I got it on Tuesday). Battery usage went from having Screen being the biggest drain, to Android OS being tops (with similar percentages to other posters). Where I would get ~5-8%/hr charge use, it is now a 15%+/hr drop in charge. It is not staying in sleep mode. Even if I haven't touched the phone for a couple of hours, it shows that it has woken and been kept awake for a substantial amount of the up time. I've tried to limit any of the syncing to the minimum accounts. I've removed a couple of apps (Instagram, being the only one I installed during this time).
I have not tried a factory reset yet. I will try removing the update to Google Maps, since I think an update did come in that timeframe and other posters have mentioned issues with a recent G Maps update (although G Maps isn't showing that it's a substantial drain, maybe it's keeping the OS awake???) I do not know if the battery charging issue is the same as the keep awake issue. They just happened at about the same time and at the same time as the above poster. I have a new battery on the way, to see if the charging indicator issue is related to the chip on the battery.
Is anyone else having this additional issue?

To update my previous post (#393): After posting, I went to the Sprint store, where they replaced my battery and cleaned all of the contacts. It seemed to work for a day, but then the problem came back and additionally I noticed that my volume rocker was not registering Vol+, and volume was stuck in vibrate. When the rocker was stuck, OS usage went up, and the phone stayed warm. My phone was replaced under was replaced under warranty. My new phone is on 4.0.4 and appears to be working great with at least as good battery life as the best the old phone got. I have not added in a POP email account that I used to have, but I do have one Exchange account set up. Medium usage will get me 15+ hrs. Android OS shows up as about 5% of battery use.
That said, I think 4.0.4 may have a Bluetooth glitch. Twice (once with old phone, once with new), I have had my car stereo not return to music when ending a call. I have dialed through a shortcut on the phone, and ended the call on the stereo (I did this all the time on 2.3.7). The stereo says that it still has a call connection after ending (keeps giving time connected). Turning the stereo off/on doesn't fix it. Cycling Bluetooth off/on on the phone doesn't fix it. Airplane mode off/on doesn't fix it. The only thing that fixes it is a reboot of the phone.

No other active apps, only two mails came in inbetween.
Battery Widget statistics telling 1 min 35 secs discharging per percent capacity.
And another similar problem lets the phone stay with 200MHz and no Deep Sleep anymore. Restarting phone helps to heal this temporerily.

I would hardly suspect a hardware-independent bug inside android because there are same issues on Galaxy S2.
This MUST be fixed soon. It's a blocker for me, should have been sticking with Android 2.3.6.
Here you see the immense battery drain. At the lowest peak I made a full power down and up and attached a wall charger to recharge it for some one hour. Since then it behaves OK again.

I've got a Nexus S and I've been experiencing the same problems (high Android OS % anywhere from 20-50%). Tried pretty much everything on here and whatever else I could find on the net with no luck.
Randomly, on the weekend I've noticed that my data usage has been unusually high. After investigating, it was Exchange that was using up a lot. I had mine set on Push receiving two email accounts for a period of 1 week. I changed this to 3 days and voila! Android OS disappeared.
It's been on ~5% for about 2 days now and data usage has dropped significantly.
For the record, I haven't noticed any relationship between data usage/Exchange and Android OS in the past (as usually Exchange has it's own process that is prone to using up battery!) but lowering E-mail has magically reduced my Android OS usage.
If anyone can try and let everyone know how it goes, maybe this will help.

I'll add my issues to this list. running VZW galaxy nexus stock on 4.0.2. Was doing ok in terms of battery life since I bought it in mid december, maybe 10-12 hours on 4G. Recently, the last week or so I noticed the phone was dropping about ~12% an holur on standby on the desk. I don't know what changed but built-in battery stats shows Android OS is using 40% of the battery and is in keep awake for the majority of the time it is unplugged. I have noted this issue on 3G, 4G, and wifi. I have bluetooth turned on all the time as I need it to autosync with the car and headsets at home. I haven't changed anything as far as I know. Here are my 2 cents:
Had exactly the same problem - have a stock Nexus S.
Upgrade to 4.0.4 was done automatically from 4.0.3, and the battery performance was terrible (although the phone no longer was leaving burn marks on my thighs from getting too hot in my pocket). After going on a trip and the battery went from 100% to 20% in airplane mode only listening to music for 1 hour, I thought I needed to do something.
Did a factory reset, and, like after any other time I have had to re-install an operating system, lost various saved data for apps that needed to be reinstalled. Maybe helped a bit in regular mode (lasted 8 hours before going down to 20%), but I noticed that in airplane mode it was back to normal battery use.
Checked the option in developer section to kill background apps, which may have helped, although not enough to really notice a difference. Then a couple days later I changed the option on my Exchange account to synchronize 1-month of emails and appointments (from 3-days of emails and 2-weeks of appointments) and battery usage seems to be back to normal (went down from 100% to 65% over 15 hours with light usage, which is how it used to be with Gingerbread).
I'm not sure which of the above steps were essential - I assume the factory reset and changing the Exchange settings were both necessary. Good luck to everyone else having the same problem, and Google really should work harder at debugging their production releases before sending them out to the general public.

I'm having the same issue, Bell Samsung S2, just upgraded to 4.0.3, and the biggest battery drain used to be the screen brightness, but now, its 63% the Android OS. What gives? I'm honestly considering just switching to the iPhone - sometimes you just want a phone that works that you don't have to mess around with... I would love to spend hours upon hours debugging this kind of thing when I was a kid/teenager, but time is limited now and I would love to have a phone that doesn't have stupid issues like this... Ok. I take my previous comment (#425) back. Although initially, turning Bluetooth ON did stop the Android OS awake time, it only took a couple days for it to come back. Everything is back to how it was despite the status of the Bluetooth radio. Upon completing a full charge, Android OS will stay awake sometimes, not all the time. The only thing that temporarily fixes for me it's to perform a reboot, but it's only fix until the phone charges up again. Then it's a roll of the dice. This is really frustrating, I don't get why is it so hard to troubleshoot or display what's keeping Android OS awake?

ke...@gmail.com <ke...@gmail.com> #433
To add to Comment 429 which references 417, I believe it is possibly related to the push with the default mail client. I made two changes in the sync options on my Motorola Xoom with the 4.0.4 ICS on a subfolder to push and 2 weeks and that was about 2 to 3 days ago and noticed now I went from being able to use the battery only for a day and a half started to tank down to barely lasting 14 hours. I believe if sync options are changed within the default mail client to add additional resources to sync, it causes the the Android OS to keep the active longer than necessary for delta checks.

guys i solved this issue.
My "Android OS" was using up all the battery when the phone was in standby.
How i solved it
Settings > Accounts & sync > Remove google account
yes it was that simple, some google app was messing around (thinking its the maps/navigation one)
My galaxy nexus is behaving normally now. Android OS back to 2% battery usage

I had a similar thing on my SG2 suddenly start a couple of weeks after adding a google account. I did as jaideep suggested in Comment 441, but I also had to power down and pull the battery (!) before it seemed to take effect.
Not sure what was going on, but that process seems to have battery usage back to normal.

Suddenly started getting horrible battery life on my Galaxy Nexus. Have had it six months and its worked like a dream prior to this. Battery life that would once last all day with frequent use barely lasts 2.5 hours without any use. As with many previous entries, the Android OS stats are high with 'Awake' begin equal to 100% of the time since disconnected from charger. Using advanced stats, 'vbus-tuna-otg' wakelock is responsible for this, with a ratio of over 90%. I have three batteries and this affects each one identically, and I now have to carry the extra charged ones to make it through the work day.

Just started happening to my Nexus 4 today... around 45% use from barely using my phone since 9 AM, battery around 35% at 2PM. Unacceptable... This is with WiFi off too

I have just found this issue today after playing music for the first time in weeks. I look around the web and it seems to have been unfixed by months. Can someone from Google please provide an urgent update?
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #448
Saw this issue on galaxy nexus and 4.2.1 and still seeing it on 4.2.2. Android OS will suddenly start using battery, sometimes after using google music but not always. It usually requires a reboot to fix.

Hi ,
This problem is also there on Sony Xperia P : ICS 4.0.4 . Clearly the behavior of my Xperia P is similar as being said in above comments. Has made my phone act like a ZOMBIE.
Observations :
1. My android os usage is almost same as the discharging time ( difference not more than 1 hr )
2. If I reboot my phone , things get better for sometime until 2 or 3 days.
Applications being used / disabled:
1. I used email exchange ( synced to 3 days of mail ) for 2 accounts.
2. Lync 2010 ( No CPU usage problem with 1. or 2. )
3. Disabled apps ( Talk , Twitter , FB , G+ , Gmail , Timescape ) : I spent so much to make my phone a ZOMBIE by disabling this apps.
If I just have to spend my time restarting and analyzing the battery in my phone then what's the use of spending so much.
This is so ridiculous , I can't blame Sony for this because it's the OS causing troubles here. 2 years since release and no solution yet !!!
Regards,
Hasan

Same issue here with my Xperia P running OCS 4.0.4. Have reinstalled several times with same result. OS takes between 40% and 60%.

SOLUTION Finally on my end :
Along with my comment #448 , I have finally been able to resolve this on my Xperia P after a lot of experimentation. I am still experimenting on the resolution.
Cause : I found that the Android OS process keeps pinging because of the location services.
Steps which have resolved for me :
1. Settings
2. Location & Security
3. Un-check all options.
Since then the Android OS process wake up is taking not more than 2 mins in a run on 5 hrs. My phone is on since 13hrs . I have mail sync on , lync on and the battery is still 81% . I am still testing this , I will start enabling my disabled apps one by one to check what is going on.
Regards,
Hasan

Noticed something similar on my Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.2.2. Android OS is reported as causing a lot of battery drain.
Looking at adb shell dumpsys batteryinfo it looks like two kernel wake locks are to blame, gps-lock and vbus-tuna_otg.
Statistics since last unplugged:
Time on battery: 1h 22m 31s 644ms (74,6%) realtime, 1h 22m 31s 644ms (74,6%) uptime
Total run time: 1h 50m 36s 85ms realtime, 1h 50m 36s 85ms uptime,
Screen on: 7m 59s 196ms (9,7%), Input events: 0, Active phone call: 0ms (0,0%)
Screen brightnesses: dark 6m 40s 517ms (83,6%), dim 1m 18s 678ms (16,4%)
Kernel Wake lock "gps-lock": 1h 22m 31s 167ms (0 times) realtime
Kernel Wake lock "vbus-tuna_otg": 24m 48s 791ms (1 times) realtime
Kernel Wake lock "PowerManagerService": 15m 4s 241ms (442 times) realtime
No idea when the problem started, but I've archived the output from adb bugreport just in case.

Hi Johan,
The "vbus-tuna_otg" seems to be related to a USB service. Check if USB Debugging is enabled on your phone. For the "gps-lock" please follow as I have mentioned in #450, it worked for me.

Hasan

Hi,
This problem started showing up on my Nexus 7 4G after updating to 4.2.2.
Now Android OS uses more battery than my screen except if I actually use the tablet constantly.
My location setting has not changed and USB debugging is not enabled.

This is happening to my Verizon DROID BIOINC running Android 4.0.4. Even after performing a Factory Reset and not installing any applications, the power drains (on a brand new extended battery) from100% to 40% in about 3 hours... when I'm not even using the phone , i.e. it's just in my pocket. Even in no wifi, no sync, airplane mode and sleep mode, the battery drains 10-20% per hour. Android OS is using 80-93% of battery. I have never rooted the phone.
Is there anyone who can change the priority of this to something higher than Medium?

My phone (DROID BIONIC) is fixed!
It was not an Android problem but a hardware problem. I was fortunate enough to have a Square Trade warranty, so I filed a claim and they asked me to send the phone in. They repaired it. I charged it last night, turned it on at 7:00AM, used it the normal amount throughout the day. 13 hours later, and the battery (standard battery) still has 64% charge.

Does this mean, that the bug is fixed with Android 4.3 or how should we understand "obsolete"? I can't find anything on obsolete here: http://source.android.com/source/life-of-a-bug.html
jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #461
Perhaps it means that the device is obsolete?
I tried contacting Samsung support here in Sweden about it and they tell you to try a factory reset and if that doesn't help, it doesn't, you have to send the device in, which wont help since it is not that easy to reproduce reliably. According to the support rep I spoke to that's all they can do since they have no way to report software problems to anyone within the Samsung organization or to Google for Nexus devices. Could of course be that I was lied to and the support rep was just lazy and wanted to get rid of me.

I'm seeing the vbus-tuna_otg wakelock issue with 4.3. Others have suggested that this is often a hardware issue with the USB port. Which would be frustrating, since I just had it replaced a couple of months ago.

I also have the vbus-tuna_otg kernel wakelock on 4.2.2 and it is draining my batter like crazy. I already changed out my usb port and the problem is still there. I have a verizon 32gb gnex. Any tips??? Please.

hello I tried to flash my droid bionic and it got to 21 out of 22 is there a way I can charge the battery any help will be grateful thank you
Description
The attached screenshots show the usage and some members from the XDA community have even indicated higher battery usage.
Is this the same issue that was identified with the suspend process on the Samsung Galaxy SII ?
