I am not sure if the reason is really the +43. Maybe this happens due to another reason.

Add +33 works, but I've tried to disconnect my account and reconnect it and now it works.

I've got this defect bug to! I am french.

The problem is that if my contacts is registered with a classic number, and not the +xx (regional indicator), it doesn't rely my contacts and the sms sender..

I got contacts imported to the mobile phone from my gmail account and now have to deal with the same problem. Incoming numbers are not matched with names from contacts.

I understand what the problem is. ICS by default adds  +<country-code> to all incoming numbers.

I am in US and when I get call from India, I see numbers displayed as +191xxxxxxxxxx instead of +91xxxxxxxxxx. Since the incoming number starts with +191, it doesn't match with the same number starting with +91.

Same problem for +91 numbers too. I see '1' added to the beginning of the number, it becomes 191 cell_number instead of +91 cell_number and my contact is stored as +91 cell_number (it worked as expected on GB 2.3.6)

This issue breaks the contacts, priority of this issue should be increased.

I had the same issue. Remove the google account that you are using for the contacts and add it back. It works..

I am from India and have had the same issue. This is what exactly happens
1. If the number is stored with only a "0" at the beginning, the incoming call is NOT recognized.
2. Sometimes even if the number is stored with the "+91" which is the international dialing code for India, the contact name is not displayed initially. However, it does recognize the contact subsequently.

Having the same issue. Country code does not appear automatically for all my calls (+94) but majority of names are missing form the recent calls list. This is irrespective of nature of the number saved in contacts, whether it has the country code or not.

+1 for increasing priority. Contacts is a most basic thing for a phone.

In my case, no number was recognized. I was forced to resave my contacts. I experienced, that it is no problem because of the country code. Only the spacing between certain digits matters. I store all numbers starting with "0049" and needed to resave them, so the phone could insert its spacing. After this procedure, the Google Contact was recognized inside the SMS- or phoneapp.

In my opinion, the user shouldn't be forced to use specific spacing or the "/" inside phone numbers. Please fix.

Have tried adding country codes and rearranged spacing still some incoming calls and text messages don't get assigned to contact names...

I've always stored contacts in my phone book with the international code, so generally don't face issues. However in ICS 4.0.3, at times, if you choose to text someone by selecting the user from my call log and choosing to call again, or texting them, the name doesn't show up either while making the call, or while writing the message. This is strange, but its not a consistent issue, and generally I'd end up with this error just not occurring.

Removing the google account and adding it back in doesn't fix it in my case.

This bug has been also in android for years, if you google about this problem you can find forum entries back from 2009.
I had this problem coming and going on my milestone and now with the nexus 4.0.1.
It worked until yesterday, and now it completely broken. If my contact list has my finland country code for numbers, i can't see the caller anymore, but text messages have country code always so they work. If I remove the country code from contact list, then I can see the callers name but not the name for text message sender.
Incredible that this can't be fixed !

( i reported some days ago a bug with flashing names, they changed between the number and contact name, it is only happening with the numbers with country code, so it is some how related to this one )

Same here in Argentina (+54) everything worked perfectly on my nexus one and now my galaxy nexus just shoes numbers instead of names. really annoying

Same issue in Ireland, although sometime it matches the names if the network sends then in international format but when the network sends them in local format it doesn't match them!!!
Old non-android Nokias and Sony Ericsson's didn't have this problem.

Yes,
After you install it, you need to run it and click "Fix all contact entries", afterwords you will see a progress bar.
When you are finished, you might have to restart your phone, all should be working then (you can uninstall the application now)

It's pretty simple, once you click the button it goes through each contact (you see the progress), retrieving it's phone numbers, then applies the formatting (I don't do this myself I use Google's formatNumber method (http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/PhoneNumberUtils.html).
As a general rule I always perform a backup of my contacts before such changes (you can export your contacts in gmail)

It goes through all of the contacts that the Android API exposes, so if you can see those contacts under your "People" application it should run through them too.

Not for me.. i didn't see any changes on how the numbers were formatted.

Me neither, I installed, but numbers r still not being assigned to names.

For me it's the opposite. Mobile number in my country is in the format of +60 X XXX XXXX with country code. But I see my incoming call in the format of local number 0X XXX XXXX (I assume my carrier handle calls in local number?). I have all my contacts saved with country codes. When I have an incoming call, I can see the caller, but when I check the call log after the call, the call log cannot identify them.

I think we need an option for custom phone number pattern matching.

That is weird, so you installed the app, clicked the "Fix all contact entries" button it showed the progress bar and in the end of the progress all of your numbers are still not identified in the recent calls?
Have you tried restarting the phone after all of the process?

The app worked fine to me, straightforward.

got the OTA 4.0.4 for Nexus S 3G (i9020T) last night and looks like the bug has been fixed. Now when I get a call from an international number (ex +91) I get the contact name displayed ... Also when I browse through the call history, contact name was assigned to all the incoming calls that just had numbers.

just remove your google account which your contact backup is there , and add it again ,,,and the problem is resolved

I had a similar issues with my phone. I lived in Zimbabwe & numbers saved with the 07XXXXXXXX format were not being recognized when they were changed to the
+263-7XXXXXXXX format.

Removing & then re-adding the Google account seems to have fixed this though. Thank you

I've just got the update to ICS on my T-Mobile phone in the UK and I suffered the same issue which annoyed me, as someone said earlier, just remove Google account from phone, then add it again and resync contacts, all is well. Certainly is a wierd one.

As I see, Android try to match the full number for an incoming call with the phone number stored in the contact list. So in countries that you dial with a prefix in some cases and the network send without this prefix, we can´t see contact list.

If you call a mobile number in argentina you need to add 9 between country code and area code +54 9 11 cccc nnnn but when you received the incoming call +54 11 cccc nnnn. This is for identify a calling party call for internationals operators.

So how we can only try to macth less digit rigth to left? instead of the all number.

I've had this problem with Android ever since I got my Nexus S - back then the problem existed with 2.3.x - and now it still persists with 4.0.4!
This turns my smartphone into something that is pretty much useless when it comes to the phone part - and don't get me started on the "smart" thing.

I store all my contacts with the appropriate regional indicator so I highly doubt that this could be related to this issue.
The problem occurs randomly. I've had two calls from the same person in a short period of time - once it displayed the contact, the other time I just got the phone number and had no idea who called me.

...and don't even get me started on the phone using completely wrong ringtones (mostly the default one - could this be related?).

P.S.: in the call log it shows the contact fine when I check it later.

Same issue here. I am using Lenovo P70 android phone. It is android 2.3. When ever a call comes with +91 (India ISD code) or 0, It does not associate with contact list. Any solution?

I upgrade to 4.0.3 , my numbers are stored +33XXXXXXXXX in google contacts (web)
On the phone it shows as +33 x xx xx xx xx . when I edit the contact on the phone it shows as +33XXXXXXXXX !!!

Before I was on 2.3.5 and all was ok, I did NOT have this problem.

additional finding: I saved the number in google contact in local format 06xxxxxxxx. Now, when I get incoming call from that number , it displays the Contacts Name!!!

Same issue. Contact have been saved in different format i.e. +44nnnnnnnnnn or 0nnnnnnnn. With the same digits after +44 or 0 within the country should be identified as the same contact. Unfortunately, does not happen. I don't understand why a SMARTPHONE with an advanced SMART operting system cannot pick up numbers SMARTLY. It does not deliver purpose of being SMART PHONE.

my issue I think is the other way around, I have all my contacts with the country code, and when I receive a call or SMS from a contact when I'm in its country, the number is not automatically recognize... but when I receive the call when I'm outside its country it's OK... help!

I recently found out something very important about this:
Try letting it ring for longer. After a while the phone may suddenly recognize the phone number - exchanging the displayed number for the contact associated with it.
Unfortunately, this doesn't fix the wrong ringtone (default one) being played though.

Perhaps the lookup of the contact takes so long, which would explain my ringtone problems and "contact not displayed" problems?

Can anyone else confirm my findings?

This is a pretty annoying bug. Brings me back to the old days, when the phone rings but you don't know who is calling :-D

I too tried removing the account and adding it back again. The bug still remains. Another fix I read about was to take a backup of all your contacts. Then restore it back again. Done that, but it's still the same.

Numbers stored without +91 does not get their contact name displayed on incoming. Also just to note that the call logs doesn't show the contact name too. So it's simply like ICS treats "01234567890" and "+911234567890" as 2 different numbers.

It's been half a year since this bug showed up. Why has it not been fixed. I am really disappointed  on the google team. Please fix all known serious bugs before realising new versions!

This Incident definitely deserves the priority "High". It is one of the most elementary functions of a telephone and it hasn't been working for months now. My cell phone back in the 90s did a better job at this.

I can confirm the findings, which are posted in Comment 56. I also believe, the phone takes a lot of time to load the contact information. Perhaps this bug can be reproduced by using an address book with a lot of contacts.

I have this same problem on my Galaxy S2. I solved it by linking most common numbers in both formats (040123456, +35840123456) in contact informations, now it seems to work. It's redicilous that we have this kind of problems today, this should be fixed the soonest and with very high priority.

On my Nexus S i9023, I tried several solutions (recoding all the number in right format, +XX XXX XXXX, importing the contact list from gmail, using different rom than stock, using the overclocking by modded kernel, and many many other things here suggested), but nothing has been resolved this incredible issue, in my experience affecting GB, ICS and, now, also JB releases!!
I noted that it happens more in low signal condition, particularly for low 3G/4G data connection, but it is not a general rule: this trouble could manifest himself in several uncorrelated situations.
I am very concerned and disappointed: the caller id display should be an elementar performance of all the phones! It is definitely unacceptable that it does not work in many android's smartphones!!!

Please stop reposting the same comment every 5 minutes. It will not help to get the bug fixed. It just annoys all people who starred this issue.

Nexus S operator: (rogers canada) OS: 4.1 Jellybean

This issue was not present for me on the ICS. But after upgrade to Jellybean I have similar issues of incoming contacts showing numbers, and if I don't answer the call right away, eventually the name and image will appear... unless the caller has hung up ;o)

This issue doesn't occur for every caller (and for me it is not related to the +1 area code issue). Can happen in both + and non + callers in my phonebook.

I can't believe this is an "open" "medium priority" issue since the beginning of 2012.
C'mon Google it can't be that difficult to figure out the "phone" features of this "SMARTphone"

Same Issue on Samsung Galaxy S3 4.0.4 on Argentina (+5411 / +54911). I'm going back to my iPhone 4S.

I have found in the web something that could help mitigate this problem. It
consist of editing "/system/build.prop" and adding this: "
ro.phone.min_match=9". Of course, you should replace the length "9" for a
more convenient one to you.

As I don't usually tinker with system files, I don't know if this makes
immediate effect, needs a phone restart, or needs the whole firmware to be
rebuilt.

I also had a poke around in /system/csc on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (stock firmware 4.1.2) and changed others.xml to put in the UK country code.

Sadly, no joy, so incoming phone calls come up as 01234 123456 and thus don't match +44 1234 123456

Try removing Google accounts and putting it back again.

Ok, I've found the phonenumberutils.smalli (after deobex the framework.obex) but there are no such line calling those functions minMatchLen inside it. Should I add it or the variables are different?

I know some people may not agree but google should keep tight rules about manufacturers altering phone call functionality on android, and try to keep same level on all androids for phone functions.

Sure some customizations to interface are welcome, but change telephony behavior no.

Because, after all, that's the most important feature in a phone, make/receive calls/sms, and those silly problems could be avoided.

Don't replace the const/x values if different just the 0xb to 0x7 is all you need to change.

Use android kitchen to decompile the .jar file and recompile it once you have made the changes. Also depending on your ROM the file might be in a different location so just search the folder for 'phone' and you should find it that way.

You might have an odexed rom if stock so not sure of the steps for people who do. You can take a backup of your ROM, deodex with Android Kitchen and restore the backup but again don't quote me on that - keep a separate backup before doing that just in case it doesn't work.

Android Kitchen might work with odexed files as well but I can't say for sure without having one to play with first, if indeed framework.jar is odexed?!?

Make sure your phone numbers contain nothing but digits, that means hyphens are NOT allowed as well.
That did the trick for me...

and when i get a call it only shows the number and not the contact. 09171231234.

Here's my version of this problem.
I live in Lebanon. So international is +961 x xxx xxx, and local 0x xxx xxx.
Incoming calls come in the local version and SMSs come in the full version.

If i save a contact in the internation version, the incoming call won't get matched but SMS will. If i save with in the local version, it's the other way around.

This happened to me when i was using HTC Sensation Xe which i bought from outside lebanon. I ended up saving both local and international numbers for each contact.

Then when i bought HTC OneX+ for the Lebanese market, numbers started matching and everything was perfect. So I cleaned up my contacts and all numbers were international again.
Today, when I installed the new update to 4.2.2, numbers don't match anymore.

I assume the phone has to be configured to your specific market for this to work. I can't believe an update overwrites this setting!

Happened LOTS of time; last was yesterday when i had a call from 671 87 XX XX not showing my friend's contact details, stored as +34 671 87 XX XX.
Randomly working/non working.

in my case, if there were a way to delete an incoming zero, my contacts might be identified. this issue happens for me exclusively with fixed-line phones that add a zero in front of the local number. mobile phones in various countries are recognized by the contacts.
all of my phone numbers are stored in the international format of +1 for usa and +86 for china.

i have used software to make my numbers uniform. but i don't think it is a solution to double-store my numbers. i also don't have the expertise to reformat my phone software in ways that modify something like the phone number length.

i don't know if this is a carrier issue or the phone maker. i suspect it is the phone because i have seen this problem on my phone in more than one country. (mine is samsung -- but this didn't happen with my blackberry.)

for me the issue is the same, but also when i want to call someone, i pick that person from my contact list and when the phone switch to the phone screen i only see the number and not the contact information like name and picture.
when i remove the landcode it's working oke.
I used to have a JIAYU G3, all was oke, now i switch to JIAYU S1 and the problem is there.

This has got to be the most annoying bug on the planet. Google or android is screwing with country codes. When google hangouts started doing sms, it got worse. My contacts would send me an sms, the country code would get added automatically and it will link up the contacts.

The problem is, I can't reply to them.  I get an error because the +81 (Japan) code was added automatically.

Nothing but the number comes up when they call.

Since this is never going to be fixed and I'm tired of getting emails at random times of the day/night, I'm out of here.
I switched to a different and newer phone and so far I haven't had this issue again (I also haven't had that many calls from known contacts). Might have something to do with how fast the phone can lookup the caller in the contacts?

Same here. I'm pretty sure, it some kind of performance-related issue.

Go to Gmail on a desktop.
Then go to Settings (the gear icon in the top right)
Under General, go to 'Phone Numbers' and select your default country code from the dropdown list

This is the correct description of the issue (maybe for most of us) :
The caller name doesn't shown in recent list whichever form you add the contact list before.
But, when you receive a call from a new number or existing number, add this comming number to the contact.
Your phone will write it to phone storage (not sim storage) and the caller name for this number will shown anymore.
(Don't forget to list phone storage in contact if it isn't so.)
(Maybe you will want to move the all number from sim to phone but it won't work.)

This can be solution : Espier Dialer (at playstore) show all caller name whichever form you add to phone storage or sim storage.
if someone(expert)can analyze this app. I think he will find out the solution easily.

i am using google nexus 5 and imported my all contacts from excel file, after importing contact it missed out + before 91 country code, so now i am facing problem to dial a number.

Playing with the phone numbers I just found something.
I have a contact mobile phone with the international format for Argentina (54 for the country and 9 for mobile phone):

+549221xxxxxxx

Like this, sms where identified, but not phone calls because it's detected as 221xxxxxxx.
I just inserted an space between the country code and the rest like this:

+549 221xxxxxxx

Now both calls and sms are detected.

I think the problem is somehow network/sim related.
I've had no trouble with my phone for about 2 years until a week ago when I switched to another mobile network (from Personal AR to Claro AR), now my stored contacts are not recognized on incoming calls nor sms.
For what I see incoming calls show the number without country code and incoming sms show the number with it

I have an issue regarding I added gmail account in my new phone  all contacts have been imported while incoming I am not able to see contact information. any body pls give me suggestion for this issue.

Getting same problem. I have to save contact twice both with country code and without country code.

This is crazy - so many people with the same problem and for several years!  I never had any problem with this on my non-smartphone mobiles, nor my Windows Mobile 6 "smartphone".  On my Android 4.3 phone I have to store entries with and without the prefix (with for messaging, without for incoming phone calls to match what the network sends me).  There are many suggestions for configuration to match the last 9 (or whatever) digits, which should work, however none have worked for me, perhaps because of conflict between Android and Samsung mods(?).  What annoys me the most, is that I've never once seen any official help from anyone at Google or Samsung for such a fundamental issue.  Why is this so hard?????

When Number is saved as +91 i can get correct number from CallLog database. When It is saved as 0 number is displayed as 0 when I query number column of CallLog.Calls database.

Android 4.4.4 and I have don't have that issue since all my contacts numbers are saved with the international country code. Just do the same and you have zero issues.
It is strongly advised because when you are on vacation and want to call one of your contacts you can't easily if you don't have its number saved with the international country code.

Hi every one.

I was having the same problem as you are. Phones stored with country code will fail to be identified if called within the same country (no country code displayed during the call).

After one week hitting my head against my desk and phone and laptop, i found that:
- Remove and add the account doesn't work (at least in my case)
- Rearranging the number doesn't work either (in my case again)

what it worked was (using Lenovo Vibe Z k910 with android 4.4 kitkat).

contact -> more features and settings -> more display options -> Matching digits number (change from 11 to 7).

After changing this, My call log full of unknown numbers transformed in to a call logs full of familiar names and pictures :).  I am sure that this option must be somewhere in all android phones.

I hope this will help somebody :), at least saved my phone from the fire, free fall from a 7th floor, or other catastrophic event that usually happen to phones that do not behave.

This issue can be solved by using the following steps. I am using Lenovo K3 note with android 5.0
go to contacts then go to more features and settings then go to more display features. and select number match bits and change it to 7 from 11.
