I noticed that worked yesterday ... but does disabling web scripts not have a negative impact on other things?

I don't want to fix one thing to then have another broken.

That I don't know.  I haven't encountered any problems because of it, but I also don't use the browser very much.  I have not seen a problem with apps either.  

I've seen similar behavior on ICS; the browser keeps using accessibility scripts even if Talkback is switched off (as if the accessibility scripts in the browser access the TTS themselves instead of going through an accessibility service).

Exactly the same problem for my app, this really annoys users as they have to go through a lot to desactivate the talking feature.

Annoying, yes but easy to include it in a Help / Info portion of your App until a better alternative is found.

I'm running 4.02 on my GN, and when I open Google Books, it beings "reading aloud" every time I open a book.  I turn off the feature within Google Books, but when I reopen the app, it reads aloud again.

I have Talkback turned off in accessibility settings.  I've also turned off 'install web scripts' as I heard this was a workaround fix, but it did not work.

Yes, I get this too. VZW GNex 4.0.2. If I turn on lightflow in accesibility services I get the voice/reading accesibility service turning on (it doesn't show it's turned on, but it will read webpages etc.). But with lightflow turned off in the accesibility service menu, lightflow works fine.

Same here ... so since Light Flow functions without it being turned on in Accessibility Services, why is it there? Hmmm

Same issue here. With lightflow enabled and Talkback disabled, google books reads everything out loud to me. As soon as I disable lightflow the voice goes away. I haven't had any issues with the web browse though. GN 4.0.2 non root.

I have samasung galaxy nexus. Phone will talk back only in browser. Only pre loaded factory ice cream sandwich browser. If you download opera browse.from.the android market you don't get talkback. Please fix asap..very frusterating. Thank you!!!

Brand new galaxy tab and I get the same problem. Tried everything I've read. I'm gonna take it back to best buy tomorrow.

Same Bug on my new galaxy nexus with the firmware 4.0.4 and on my freshly updated galaxy s II to Android Ice cream Sandwich. Before that there werent any bugs like the talkback.

Yeah, we all have this issue.  Google doesn't care.  They got new leadership and their new policy changed from "Do no evil" to "Do only things that make money by selling user information".  This has been an issue for 5 months and still not a peep from the developers.

The other problem may be that it's mostly an issue for the book reader, and most Americans don't read.

FWIW, if I turn off web scripts, the Gmail app crashes upon opening any e-mail. If I turn it back on, Gmail works but it reads my e-mails aloud when I tap on them. And I don't even have Talkback installed.

even after double checking and re-turning off webscripts talk back still starts up on Google Books. Please fix this issue as it makes using GBooks a nuisance.

Nexus 4.0.2

This started happening for me a few days ago.  No new apps have been installed and I have Talkback disabled under accessibility.  I *DO* have Light Flow installed but I have had it installed for months and this just started happening.  Did Light Flow get an update lately?  I have it set to automatically update so I'm not sure.  ???

One other thing is that now I have a yellow box that sometimes makes my browser glitchy as well as Facebook.  It appears around a whole post/update/web search result/web page name/etc.  When the Talkback starts malfunctioning, I notice that it's reading what's in that yellow box.  The yellow box is SUPER ANNOYING ( nearly as bad as the Talkback ).  I can't get rid of this either.  Related maybe???

This error has been happening since Dec.  so I don't think it has anything to do with an update with Lightflow.  And I haven't noticed any Lightflow updates recently anyways. It's a problem with Google's code.  But they're too busy hacking people's WiFi networks to do anything about it.

Could someone who has this problem try going into google play, searching for talkback and seeing if they are on the latest version. Even though it's built in on lots of phones it won't update on the market automatically according to the talkback site.

Just wondering if there's a bug in a version of talkback that causes this (I don't get the issue myself, but lots of users of our app see it)

I've even removed Talkback altogether (deleting the APK from the system/app folder) - but I still get voice prompts when performing certain actions in the UI; It appears these must be hardcoded, and the check is only 'is an accessibility helper service running? yes or no'...

solution for talk back issue:

settings -> application manager -> all -> google text to speech -> disable

Wish that it was that simple,  but every time I turn on Google books the
Talkback switches itself back on and it starts reading to me again.

Hi Guys,

I've figured out a work around to disable TTS on the phone until this issue is remedied. If you go to Settings > Apps > All > Google TTS Engine you can disable talk back. You will receive an error message when entering books or whatever app is talking to you, but it is well worth not having the phone yell everything at you!

yes. the only way to get rid of this problem is to disable from Apps > All > all the TTS software you got. so not only Google TTS but Samsung TTS too. Only this is working.

Hi everyone, I´ve get it done by disabling the samsung tts only. but know I can´t hear s-voice girl anymore. ;) I mean I can abandon it but if someone got a solution please share it.

I have the same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S3. Turning off all settings makes no difference.  It doesn't seem to be exclusive to LightFlow Light either - if I enable other (any?) services in Accessibility I start getting annoying "Folder Open" "Folder Closed" announcements.  

As it already have been said "Disable web scripts in accessibilty solves this issue."

And as I already said - disabling all the above recommended settings
including ensuring web scripts is turned off has made no difference - I
still get the announcements.

This is what worked for me on my test S3:
  - Go into your phone settings -> accessibility
  - Turn talkback on, select "settings" from the bottom of the page
  - Switch off all the talkback checkboxes
  - Then switch talkback off again

  - Go back into phone settings -> application manager
  - Choose the "all" tab
  - Find google text to speech (tts), click on it and click "disable"
  - Find samsung test to speech, click on disable.

This seems to work for me, and I've tested Google Navigation and still get voice in that.

I've turned off all talkback settings.  I've disabled web scripts.

I'm not prepared to disable all TTS functionality because I use it on a regular basis in various ways.

The point is this bug report is to get it fixed, not to simply work around it by disabling other functionality, right? :)

disabling tts as described above does stop Google reader from reading aloud. However, google maps nav will NOT read street names anymore...it will simply speak "turn left now"

On my samsung galaxy s3 using  android  4.0.4 talk back activates but l only on the open home screen page edit part. (Pinch to minimise home screens onto one page) . Annoying because I love lightflow

Have only noticed in Google books do far. Tried the temporary fix, but it still happens. On Galaxy nexus running 4.0.4

I am on my Galaxy S3, and when using LightFlow, when doing things such as opening a folder or on the browser, I get the talkback voice speaking to me, eventhough talkback is off. I believe it is a bug in ICS, and should be fixed ASAP.

I also have this problem on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I had the same problem on my Galaxy S2 too (Gingerbread).

I don't think this is an ICS bug, I think its a Samsung bug!

Also have this problem on Galaxy S3. Checking off every option on talkback and webscripts disabled. No go.. Still tells me "Folder has been opened" ect... I have to say this is kinda annoying. LightFlow temporarily Disabled. Waiting for solution

My Motorola Razr wasn't affected and I had both Tasker and Light Flow enabled in accessibility.

I have only ever experienced the issue on Samsung phones and that seems to be the general consensus on most forums too.

Some peeps have got varying levels of success by disabling all the settings in TalkBack (enable TB, change settings, disable TB). Some others have gone so far as to disable both Google and Samsung TTS but this stops S-Voice and other useful features from working, so I've read.

What's weird is that everyone seems to be affected in a slightly different way. I only get the voice-over when zooming out from the homescreen to the homescreen preview view and then again when returning back to any of the homescreens, or "workspaces" as the  phone likes to call them. I've read others who get a narration when opening the app drawer or pressing the menu button on the homescreen. If it was a consistent bug in Samsung's wares, wouldn't we all get the same narrations from the same actions??

I hope Samsung resolve this ol' timer soon!

I guess you are on the US version of the s3?
Samsung seem to have screwed up on the colors on the US version. The app always shows a "black" led when the screen is off and there's no notifications, but for some reason it's showing as green.
by the way, if you want support for lightflow use www.rageconsulting.com/lightflow contact form as over 100 people will be getting e-mailed about this!

For what it's worth, this isn't necessarily just a TalkBack issue, that's just part of it.  I say this because I tried to disable the voice that occurs when I edit the home screens by deleting TalkBack from my S3 (rooted) using Titanium Backup.  Despite having completely removed it with TB and rebooting the phone, I still get the voice on edit of the home screen. Install web scripts is and has always been disabled.

I had no change in behaviour after installing LightFlow - it did this before I installed it, but then again, I don't use folders on my home screens.

My users suffer from the same bug in two of my apps: "Notification Toggle" as well as "Vibration Notifier" when enabling their accessibility service. I can't reproduce the issue on my devices, but according to some users the workaround in #47 helped resolving the issue

I have the same Issue, tried disabling TTS of Google and Samsung.
Installed SVOX, seemed to work for me, but now the bug is back.

I've got the same issue and can confirm its not related exclusively to TalkBack. Sometimes users will enable my service for StatusBar+ in Accessibility but the events for the AccessibilityService are NEVER fired. I use ACRA and can see that my service is in fact active in Settings.Secure and not the other app, yet both run and mine does not receive the necessary notifications. I've also never experienced this issue myself if I only use one service, but as soon as I activate two it all falls apart.

I have this issue with both lightflow and Tasker.

This is what worked for me on my S3:

Same problem with my S3 after installing LightFlow, with "Folder Open" & "Folder Closed".
None of the suggestions above worked for me (enabling/disabling the 'TalkBack' options,  uninstall the app etc etc).
As a last resort (since I do like TTS in Driving Mode) I was about to disable the Google TTS Engine but instead tried the 'Clear data'; that seems to have cured it.  TTS still works in Driving Mode but no more "Folder Open", "Folder Close".

I came to this fix (it's not really a fix but a working workaround) because I was lucky. =)

Here you go guys n gals ->

1. Just turn off "LightFlow" in the settings menu .. you know the one thats right underneath the TalkBack setting? That's the bugger!! =)

2. Go select your "LightFlow" app icon and turn it on from there .. it'll say something about it not working right if you don't activate it in the main settings and open up a popup to lead you there :| just ignore it all!

Just a note, before disabling it in the main settings I'd recommend that you setup the colors. programs and whatever (that's what I did) cause I don't know if it will work doing it the other way around (disabling it first).

PS. Don't take this over to some other website/blog & whatever, claiming that this is " A Your Find" without asking for my permission, ain't Christian like.

Solution on comment #80 doesn't work for all applications configured in LightFlow. I tried that some days ago, after read this kind of solution somewhere, but for example for Imo.im notification doesn't work and this could be a problem.

thepassi...  you obviously didn't read pietro.a's comment, or any others before it!  This workaround was suggested in earlier posts a long time ago, and seems to be the first thing that most of us tried anyway.  The problem is that with this setting off there are several applications' notifications that LightFlow cannot handle.

I've also googling a lot to found a solution for this very annoying bug and I try many things.

In my previous comment I would say that some feature works well (SMS, for example, like you said), but others doesn't work, for example Imo.Im. For my usage this is not acceptable, so I didn't think that this could be a reasonable solution to the bug. Certainly for many others this is a great solution.

Your saying that Imo.Im doesn't work and I'm sorry to hear that but what percentage of the population really do use it? Your telling me that your not going to use the app just because it don't work for Imo.Im? I don't think so, so please be patient.

I think it's better having the more essential things working then nothing at all, don't you think? At least until it gets fixed in a future update.

I don't need it to blink when I have to go to the bathroom, just kidding! :D

I've also a GS3 and I never say that I dont't use light flow because Imo doesn't work, in fact in my case it's better to use light flow and  live with the annoying talckback voice on home screen and folder. I won't to say that this solution is not good, but there would be cases in which is not acceptable. It's all about tradeoff.

Dammit. After the fix in comment #73, the problem has randomly come back. I cleared the data from Google TTS and it was still there; cleared data from the Samsung TTS and the problem has gone away again. This is so annoying!

There's a reason why lightflow requires accessibility and that's that over 80% of notification types use it. Apps cannot be monitored to switch on or off most notifications without it. The app wouldn't ask for the service if it wasn't needed! I know as I'm the author.

This is still an android/samsung bug. I'm guessing nobody here as an ICS phone that's not a samsung one as I've had no reports of the problem with motorola, htc or sony phones. I've got samsung development team hopefully coming back to me with their investigations into this.

Its written black on white, on my Galaxy S3 Stock I9300XXALF6 the SMS, MSM, GMAIL, E-MAIL, KIK, CALENDAR & NO SIGNAL are all working and it is TURNED OFF in the Accessibility Settings so I'm close to 80% don't you think?

The thing is if no one gives out their full phone specs like model, firmware and other installed tweaks we'll never pinpoint the problem.

Your saying that the problem might be Android but at the same time you said that this "bug" doesn't affect other phone brands so you ruled out this possibility yourself.

You say it might be Samsung, I can't answer you on this one since it is happening to me on my S3 with the Stock I9300XXALF6 firmware. Even if it was on Samsungs part I doubt very much that they'll go out of their way to resolve a third party app. So basically we'll have to wait until the Light Flow Team work things out in a future update.

Usually the software producers cater their software to work on hardware and not the other way around (unless there's a severe fault but I doubt this possibility).

Installed Lightflow yesterday and all was initially working ok. Then after a few hours I start getting the folder open/ folder closed annoyingness (in a male voice) that others with an S3 report above. No other aspects of talkback were active. I suspect the variation of the bug is dependent on which model phone you have because all S3 users seem to have the same issue with folder open/closed.

Talkback was off. I turned it on, turned all options to off. Then turned it off again.

I went to Google TTS in application manager, and as suggested above, clicked Clear Data.
- The folder open/closed thing stopped. Temporarily. A couple of hours later it started up again.
So I reluctantly clicked Disable in Google TTS.
- Problem solved. For about 12 hours. Then this time the folder open/folder closed annoyingness started up in a Female voice!
So I reluctantly clicked Disable in Samsung TTS as well.
- Problem solved. At the expense of no S-voice, no briefing alarm, no streetnames in sat nav. Is it worth it??
- Now if I go into alarm clock and click alarm type -> briefing, it goes to "Unfortunately, the clock has stopped". Now this doesnt mean that I have stopped time (!)- It seems to mean that the clock app is now unstable, as I found out this morning when I had set a melody alarm last night and found that it didnt go off at all this morning. So add possible late arrival at work to the list of problems with stopping TTS!

Come on guys someone can fix this right? Could someone create a background app that regularly clears data from Google TTS and Samsung TTS every hour without having to actually disable TTS?

Oh and I had also tried turning Lightflow off in Accesibility which did stop the folder open/folder closed thing, but all my notifications then had a blue light. Which sort of defeats the object

Trust me that all of my lights are differently colored so you must of done something wrong! :|


These notifications (differently colored) work fine: SMS, MSM, GMAIL, E-MAIL, KIK, CALENDAR & NO SIGNAL.. Until a working version comes out you have no other choice other then keeping the sounds, follow post #80 OR uninstall it and wait for an update.


PS. Your S3 rooted? Mine is...
PS2. I see that you have my same firmware but a different baseband version (mine is: XXLF5).

I have the same problem. Galaxy S3 phone. Talkback is off. Lightflow is on. But when opening a folder or pinching the home screen to get an overview of al home screens, the talkback function still seems to be working (only these two actions though). It's very annoying. Please fix it.

Just found a solution for S3 folder talkback problem: Change the launcher.

I tried out Nova Launcher last night, since Touchwiz refresh rates become slow sometimes, and found out that I now can use Lightflow without the folder open/close talkback.

installed lightflow on my samsung galaxy s3 (Stock ICS 4.0.4). even though the Talkback feature is disabled, whenever i touch anything on the screen a silly robotic female voice keeps telling me what i just did. (FOLDER OPEN/FOLDER CLOSE, etc.)

please fix this. missing out on the fun of Lightflow.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and have been able to disable the annoying "folder opened/closed" messages only by disabling the Google TTS as well as the Samsung TTS services.  Disabling the Samsung one did not help.
Obviously this wouldn't work for those who require text to speech.

I just got this brand new SGS3 three weeks ago. Installed the beautiful app Lightflow, just as all you guys. And I have the same problem: irritating talkback issues.

I have used the work-around, to disable GoogleTTS & SamsungTTS. But I'm only partially contented. Or Lightflow, wrote in some wrong code, or Google / Samsung did (in my case).

Why isn't this fixed?

I would like to add that my phone is currently rooted, with some minor tweaks and rooted apps installed. The tweaks are: complete deletion of all (considered by me) bloatware, adware blocker installed, installation of Titanium Backup, and the like. I still have the factory ROM running on my phone.

I would like to be able to use all the TTS software when I feel like it.

This is a pretty huge bug if you ask me.

Furthermore uninstalling Lightflow didn't stop the talkback bug. Disabling 'installation web...' didn't work either. Disabling all kinds of things within my settings didn't work. I was almost ready to give up and re flash my phone with the factory ROM.

IT IS THAT F***ING IRRITATING GOOGLE!!! ; ENOUGH SO, THAT I AM HOPELESSLY CONSIDERING GIVING MY PHONE A F***ING HARD RESET. OR THROWING THE F***ING PHONE OUT THE WINDOW ALTOGETHER.

to do it go to settings -> apps manager -> then select GoogleTTS & SamsungTTS and where for most other apps you get the unistall button, you will see a disable button

i had the same problem with my phone and since it is only new it has no apps on it yet.talk back was off, downloaded light flow as it was recommended but that is when the problems started. just disabled accessibility for it and the talkback is gone. Definitely a bug.

Just chiming in, same problem on my S3 (i9300T).
Disabling Google TTS worked as a work around in the mean time. Voice still works for other apps like S-Voice and maps :)

Even if with talkback disabled, it keeps talking. It happened on my Huawei Ideos X5 too.

In my case, it talks with SVOX Classic, because it's the one I have installed. I can't uninstall it because i use it to get my instructions on Google Maps Navigation

Same Here. Rogers Galaxy S3. I don't have Lightflow, but I use Tasker. With Tasker service on and Talkback service off, I still get all the announcements.

With S3 no lightflow but have Tasker. When tasker service running have "open folder" etc. Stop the tasker service and all is quiet. I want to use the tasker service!

SGS3 with TalkBack problem. A good workaround for now is disabling Google TTS and Samsung TTS. Did the trick for me.

Running 4.0.4 on Galaxy S3. Installed lightflow and had "Open Folder" voice even in silent mode! Went to Settings > Apps > All > Google TTS Engine ->Disable (left samsung tts on. "Open Folder" voice now gone, and S Voice still works!

when disabling google tts engine, "open folder, close folder" voice is now gone, but then my alarm (which was set to VIBRATE ONLY) doesn't vibrate anymore and alarms with the sound (which was suppose to be mute)....

In Accessibility->Services I have "ADW Notifier" enabled, I have also Tasker installed but it is disabled here. I use Launcher Pro instead of TouchWiz. I have not and never had installed missedIt! or LightFlow.

After the official update to ICS every time my phone rang it read out loud the name of the contact. Also it sometimes started to narrate the elements of the first webpage when I started Chrome. I did not have the "Open Folder" issue. Not even in TouchWiz.

I have disabled (Frozen in Titanium Backup) TalkBack, Google TTS and Samsung TTS to work around the problem. Disabling TalkBack alone did not help.

Seems a samsung touchwiz launcher bug more that a google bug... i have one s3 with same problem. I think that we have to post this problem on samsung support forum

How do you turn back on disabled TTS services? Once turned off they're gone from app manager.

All Talkback features are disabled.  Lightflow is Enabled.  Whenever I open a folder on my home screen or applications menu, the talkback voice says "the folder is open/closed".  This happens even in silent mode, vibrate mode, and when I have manually reduced all volume faders (ringtones, system, alarms, etc).  T-mobile SGS3 T999

Please fix this issue.  Disabling the Samsung and Google TTS works for now but I would really like complete phone functionality with lightflow ASAP.  Thanks.

Mine stopped announcing "Folder Open" or "Folder Closed" when I went into Settings - Accessibility - and turned off Tasker under Services.  

Talk Back is also under services but was already off.  

I do not have any of the other mentioned apps installed other then Talk Back which came preinstalled and Tasker.

Hope this post wasn't just a repeat of what was posted above and actually helped someone as it did fir me.

I had this problem in galaxy S3- lightflow not installed, but "addons detector" accessibility service was running.  Unchecking that stopped the problem. Disabling talkback from the applications manager did nothing. Seems to be a bug with android, not lightflow.

I have the same issue. Think its probably an Android bug.

Yeah, I'm having this problem too on a GS3, but only on "folder is open" and "folder is closed" ... it's embarrased me a couple of times in public. Going to try a few of the workarounds listed here, but I hope this gets fixed in the core.

Upon further testing... I actually installed the "talkback"  and playeg with the developer settings to show what it's speaking, and it' is not showing the "folder is open" and (much to my dissapointment) the volume settings for talkback do nothing to silence that speech! I turned on logging for it, if I find anything interes*
ng in there I'll post that...

I had the same problem with "the folder is open, the folder is closed" I found I installed an app called popup notifier, after turning it off  under settings/ accessibility/service/  popup/ it took care of the problem.

Also failing on Samsung Galaxy Note with latest TouchWiz update (baseband N7000XXLRK) for ICS released in early September - provided I had NoLED installed (not Lightflow, but same kind of "accessibility" software).

Disabling SamsungTTS and GoogleTTS "worked". Nothing else did. Would really like a real fix from Google and/or Samsung in JB!

For general info, I would like to give some feedback about the peculiarities of this version

System is running quite smoothly so far and stable, but I have to complain about something! I've noticed that I can check email only manually when I start the app (every 10, 15, 30 minutes does not work / SMS from a specific number of characters in a picture message (converted but I think not a bug but by Samsung wanted it that way?) / if I want to open a pdf file, for example, the Galaxy always asks for the program with which I would like to open (when I get one anwähle and then confirm that it aLWAYS with this program is to be executed, the Galaxy still asks me every time again) / provided Lightflow is enabled in the accessibility of the Galaxy is always talking when I open a folder (this problem is probably long been known) / LightFlow itself works only conditionally if it was not enabled in the Accessibility (for calls and SMS flashes the Galaxy merrily although one has read or seen the missed call SMS has, until you open the app Light Flow / WhatsApp flashes in different colors even though you have set as green)

Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM with Jelly Bean 4.1.1, Rooted.

I just bought the app, and it works great but then I noticed that my Netflix app stopped working. It took me a couple of hours to find what made my netflix app stop working. When Light flow is on in Settings->accessibility->Light flow  Netflix stops working. When I turn it off, it starts working again.  If I open Netflix when Light flow is off, and then turn it on without exiting netflix, netflix still works. If I exit netflix and open it again, it stops working.  I am no developer or anything by it seems to me that something that light flow does is conflicting with the netflix when it starts up.

Am I the first to have this problem or are there others?

I have exactly the same issue on my Sony Tablet S running 4.0.3. A workaround is to set Light Flow up, and then disable it in Accessibility and the lights are still set.

Yeah, the bug which this thread started off talking about is certainly an O/S bug, a real problem for those affected and an easy one to fix too.  I am frankly dumbfounded that it has been around this long.  You see, I've been Googling this for quite while now all reports indicate it's also in JB, well as every GA version of ICS.

Basically the problem comes down to this, any app that runs as a service in version 4.x release will cause the open folder / close messages to play whenever any folder is opened or closed.

Don't use folders to store your icons or don't have any apps that inter-operate with the O/S?  Great!  But if your using your phone more aggressively, as the robust s/w aftermarket Google has created strongly encourages, then you're just plain screwed.

That is unless the workaround previously mentioned is deployed (shutting of both the Google  and  the manufacturer's version if there is one.)  Of course then this functionally then lost.

I frankly can't understand why Google won't put out a fix.

I say "won't" here instead of "hasn't" simply because this bug been around quite a while, it's pretty easy to diagnose, and has been well documented on the boards for at least several months.

Hi, I was having the same problem as everyone else regarding the voice commands (with galaxy s3 and lightflow).

I did this:


- Go back into phone settings -> application manager
  - Choose the "all" tab
  - Find google text to speech (tts), click on it and click "disable"
  - Find samsung test to speech, click on disable.

This did solve the talkback  problem, but when I tried to re-enable these applications (eg so that I can use read aload on google books) the applications are no longer in my list of all applications. Does anyone know where I can find them on my phone or try and download??
