I have the same issue I am receiving 2-6mbs wifi link speeds. Unacceptable
ry...@gmail.com <ry...@gmail.com> #5
The new 4.2.1 update seems to have solved my slow Wi-Fi issue.
ad...@gmail.com <ad...@gmail.com> #6
To add to this: The update did not fix the wifi issue on my device. On the wireless-g I get a 6mbps connection and on wireless-n I get about 64mbps. I have confirmed these low speeds at my server end too i.e. it is not the Nexus 4 reporting the speeds incorrectly.
ro...@gmail.com <ro...@gmail.com> #7
I have a Nexus 4 running 4.2.1 and am having WiFi speed issues. If I turn WiFi off then back on again then it resolves the problem for a period of time. When the problem occurs I get 2MB down/9MB up, when it's working I get 40M down/10MB up.
fo...@gmail.com <fo...@gmail.com> #8
I changed the wifi channel on my router, seems to have done the trich gettin around 58-65mbs wifi speeds on the n4, also updated to 4.2.1

Same with my Nexus 4. It has got 4.2.1 update but wifi speed is very slow. Other devices has perfect speed
ro...@gmail.com <ro...@gmail.com> #11
Changing the channel makes no difference for me this issue seems to happen when the phone goes into deep sleep. I've tried changing the optimisation setting to no avail.

Same here... wifi is TERRIBLY slow and I get random disconnects when I have full signal...?
ic...@gmail.com <ic...@gmail.com> #13
I too suffers the same problem. Tried most things that users are logging:
1) reconnects... failed
2) 2.4ghz only... failed
3) Disable Data and enable 2g (I know this is unrelated but I tried anyways)... failed
Slow WiFi speed to a point I get timed out by Google Play Store

Also having this issue.
Disabling and re-enabling restores Wi-Fi to full speed, after a while speeds are dismally slow again.

I am see the same issue with 4.2.1 as well. It works fine some times and other it is dismally slow even while it reports a strong signal.

I am having the same issue with wifi on the Nexus 4. I am practically sitting right next to wifi router and the slowless is frustrating. Even the google play store times out on the connection all this while Nexus 4's wifi showing a excellent signal quality with link speed of 54 Mbps. I've tried wifi speeds on two different networks with same outcome. All this while, my other devices on the network are working fine even the Nexus 7.
I am talking to Support to return the device.

I'm also having very slow download speeds when on WiFi at home. I've torn down and rebuilt my home network multiple times and have had zero success at making download speeds on the phone any better. Neither my Nexus 7, nor my Galaxy Nexus have any such issues.
Mine also has the issue with a constant popping/crackling sound in the earpiece, so I've ordered a replacement from Google that's supposed to arrive next week. Hopefully it will not have these same issues.

It's the GPS. If I leave the GPS off then the issue goes away and my phone maintains fast Wi-Fi speeds. If the GPS enabled then the problem occurs after using any app that uses GPS (Speed Test itself for example).
I can reproduce this every time:
1. Disable GPS and reconnect to your WLAN.
2. Fire up the Speed Test app and run a test. Fast!
3. Leaving Speed Test running go into settings and enable GPS.
4. Switch back to Speed Test and hit Restart Test. SLOW!
Once the connection speed drops it will stay like this even if GPS is disabled again and only reconnecting to the WLAN clears it.

I've had GPS disabled all the time and the Wi-Fi download speed is unacceptably slow with Play store timing out all the time. I added the N4's MAC address to the router settings, it didn't help. Switching from Auto band to 2.4 only or 5 only didn't help either. Disabling wi-fi optimization didn't help.
ra...@gmail.com <ra...@gmail.com> #20
Yeah, I keep GPS disabled as well, so it seems unlikely that it would be the culprit for my slow WiFi download speeds as well. Not to mention that the Speedtest app really isn't a good way to test this particular problem (on my phone anyway). Even when I'm getting good/typical test results from using the Speedtest app, my download speeds from the Play Store are abysmal. That's been the real way to test this issue on my phone: downloading stuff from the Play Store.
I'm really thinking my phone has faulty WiFi hardware in it. I restarted my phone last night and when it came back up my Play Store download speeds were what they should be: nice and fast. I was getting multiple Megabytes/second while on my home WiFi while downloading apps from the Play Store. And this is only the 3rd time it's managed to behave properly in this regard since I first received the phone (which was from the very first round shipped out from Google).
So since it was surprisingly working properly, I started opening apps to see if any of them would cause my Play Store download speeds to drop, but none of them did.
I also tried enabling and disabling GPS and it didn't seem to make any difference in this regard either.
I then rebooted the phone and did some more Play Store tests and that was when it went back to crappy speeds. After the reboot, it was painfully slow again.
So with flakey behavior like this, it wouldn't surprise me if my phone does indeed have faulty hardware.

I have not tried disabling the GPS, however I would also like to report that not only is my Nexus 4's wifi incredibly slow (on the order of dial-up networking, and frequently causes transfers to time out) it also appears to be negatively affecting other nearby devices on the same AP.
I received my Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 on the same day, and while both were connected to wifi, neither was able to successfully transfer anything. After disabling wifi on the 4, the 10 started to work again.

Same issue here with a brand new Nexus 4. I need to know if this is a hardware or software issue too. I've tried just about everything imaginable and am certain the problem is with the device. It seems that in airplane mode with WiFi only enabled, the slowdown does not occur. I noticed that when you turn the cellular radios back on after being in airplane mode, the slowdown returns. This is just ridiculous that something as fundamental as properly functioning wifi, needs to be such a hopeless hassle. Very frustrated...
mf...@googlemail.com <mf...@googlemail.com> #28
Same issue, very slow wifi tried different wifi channels and freq bands made no difference. Took it back to the shop got a replacement which annoyingly was working fine in the shop but as soon as i got home realised that i got the same problem even tried other routers still same problem not sure what to do now...
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #29
Try and enable airplane mode, with only the wifi enabled. When doing so, I am not getting the excessive wireless slow down. If you can live with a wifi only phone for a couple hours, please test. It's almost as if when the cell radios turn on, the wifi slowness immediately follows. By the way, I only have G (1G) service at my house. Could it be that the phone cant handle wifi/G at the same time? I'm going to try and test in an environment where I have hspa/3g and see if I can still get the wifi to become lethargic when enabling the 3g/hspa radios. I hope this issue gets fixed, and soon!

I'm going to suspect that the problem with slow WiFi performance is related to TCP window scaling. I have an old Cisco router as my gateway Internet router, and it doesn't properly support TCP window scaling. As such, I have to disable TCP window scaling on all of my Windows Vista/7 computers. This is done from the netsh prompt and type "interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=off" or something like that. Google is your friend to find the exact command. I suspect that if I could modify a sysctl property of the Linux kernel used by Android, that I could resolve the WiFi speed problem. This page explains how to disable TCP window scaling on Linux. [ http://www.ecr6.ohio-state.edu/window-scaling.html ] So how can I get a shell on Android?

Thanks for keeping this thread going. My router is a brand new Asus Rtac66u Dark Knight, with the latest firmware. The WiFi runs at full speed for let's say 30 minutes, and then slows way down until you turn the phones WiFi off, then back on. When its running fine I get a constant 25megabits from my Comcast hookup. When my Nexus 4 goes into the flaky/slow mode, it maxes at a constant 2.2 megabits per second until the WiFi is cycled off/on. Then after a while, the slowdown occurs again and again. No other devices have these issues.
da...@renton.ca <da...@renton.ca> #35
@MikeyJen I highly doubt your router does not support TCP window scaling so what I'm babbling about won't impact you. Sorry.

I've also found that toggling Aeroplane Mode on/off will cure my slow wifi issue for a period of time. I can leave everything on - GPS, NFC, etc. and wifi is fine. I then turn the screen on my phone off for a while and then the problem reappears. It's very frustrating. I wonder if leaving the cell radio on can somehow confuse the wifi network settings when the device sleeps?
mo...@gmail.com <mo...@gmail.com> #39
I am also having issues with Wifi. I have to keep turning off the wifi and using cell signal to do any downloading or browsing. I thought that not having LTE would not be an issue but not if I can't use WIFI.
wa...@gmail.com <wa...@gmail.com> #40
I have a dual band WNDR 3700 Netgear router capable of 300 Mbps transfer speeds, and I found that if I use WPA-PSK [TKIP] instead of WPA2-PSK [AES] my speeds are normal. This requires me to drop down to 54 Mbps transfer speeds, but i still get decent DL speeds from the play store. If i leave it at 54 Mbps and then change the encryption to WPA2, it starts to slow way down again. I also noticed when going to the testing page from dialing *#*#4636#*#* that TKIP was mentioned in one of the WI-FI fields which lead me to try this experiment. I don't think it matters if its on 2.4 or 5 Ghz. So maybe its just due to lack of proper AES or WPA2 support? Sorry if this is wrong, I'm not really a techie, I just like to experiment on stuff that annoys me.
so...@gmail.com <so...@gmail.com> #41
I just got my Nexus 4 yesterday, and I am also seeing slow WiFi speeds. I have a Asus RT-N66U router, capable of up to 900 Mbps, my SGS3 would show 300 Mbps on 5 Ghz, but this Nexus 4 only shows 58-72.

This is my second Nexus 4 as the first one had the horrible popping/hissing and cracking in the earpiece. This new phone now has HORRIBLE wifi speeds. Same as described by the others here. I really don't want to get a THIRD Nexus 4 but 2 mbps on a 30 mbps Internet is unacceptable. I really really hope this is a software issues and can be fixed with an update. If not I'd better send in for a third replacement.
da...@davidgoodchild.co.uk <da...@davidgoodchild.co.uk> #44
I got my Nexus 4 on 12/12/12, and it auto-updated to 4.2.1 after which the Wi-Fi speed on my home network dropped to the levels others here describe, with other devices on the network behaving as normal. At my work (WPA2 Enterprise) the speed was as expected, so I realised it was my wi-fi and not the phone quite quickly. I switched off Wi-Fi Optimisation and at first all seemed well, but soon the speed dropped dramatically again. After reading the comments here I decided to try to make some changes on the router. My router was supplied by the ISP, Virgin Media (In the UK) and is a D-Link D615d4, which is specific I think to Virgin, but I had flashed it with DD-WRT. I checked to see if there had been an update to DD-WRT since I had originally flashed it. There is, so I did the update and since then (24 hours so far) I have not seen the speed drop again. I'm not counting my chickens yet, but I will keep my fingers crossed and hopefully my description will help others.

Upgrading dd-wrt to the latest build on my D-Link 615 D2 solved the problem for me, out has been fine for 4 days now.
ra...@gmail.com <ra...@gmail.com> #51
After reading the above post stating that a D-Link router with the DD-WRT firmware fixed the slow WiFi speed issue for another user, I went and bought an ASUS RT-N10+ (rev. B1) router that is compatible with the DD-WRT firmware and planned to try it out tonight with my Nexus 4.
I setup the ASUS router a little earlier this evening and decided to just go ahead and try it as it was, out of the box, with my Nexus 4 and it worked just fine! Right off bat I was getting download speeds of 2-5 MB/s in the Play Store, whereas before I would only get 200-500 KB/s.
I'm going to test it out over a few more days and make sure it continues to work properly but it would seem there is something that the Nexus 4 just does NOT like about my other 2 routers. (One router is the Verizon HomeFusion router that Verizon supplies for their LTE-based HomeFusion service and the other router is an Apple Airport Extreme).
Absolutely aggravating that this issue has only ever happend with the Nexus 4 phone (and 2 different ones at that). All the other cell phones and tablets I've used at home (and there have been LOTS) have never had this issue! And that includes my Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus (both GSM and LTE models) and my Motorola XOOM.

My router is also a D-Link (DSL-2780 free from TalkTalk) and I am having similar wifi issues. I used wifi tethering to my other phone and the nexus 4 was fine using the other phone's H+ connection so I also believe this is an issue specific between Nexus 4 and D-Link routers. I will be testing the Nexus 4 on another router to see if it is OK and if so may look at getting another non D-Link router. I tried updating the firmware of this router and if anything the wifi has become more flakey for my other devices - takes longer to connect etc.

Alright, so I found a possible solution to this from XDA, here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1783175&page=6 . Pry open the back cover with your fingernail (iFixIt has a guide, don't worry about the warranty, there is no seal and it snaps right back in). Inside the back cover there will be multiple copper pieces labeled Wifi, GPS, NFC. This shows you which prongs on the device correspond to which function. The Wifi prongs are on the top right of the device, near the microphone hole.
Bend. Them. Up.
Slightly.
This will give them better contact with the backplate and theoretically better signal. I can now browse the web at humane speeds but I will still send this back for warranty after the holidays.

Disabling WLAN and enabling helps for a short time, so tis has to be a hardware or software error, not a problem with the router.

I agree with #63. I had a talk talk dlink router and suffered the same problem. I could have provably talked them into sending be a new router but there was a good chance it would be another dlink so I picked up a new TP-Link router for £40 and the WiFi I'd back to the usual fast speeds. My attempts to fix the old router highlighted that it was becoming a bit flaky anyway.

I thought my nexus 4 had hardware issues as it wouldn't connect to my home router as it would take 2-3 minutes before even finding it.
What I found out is that there appears to be a bug in jellybean 4.2, ,because i downloaded an app called wifi manager:https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kman.WifiManager
This app is amazing as it sets a widget on your homescreen, you click it, it turns on and your automatically connected to wifi and it never drops for me (yet).

I just got my Nexus 4 and started to set it up. First thing obviuosly was to connect to wifi, which I did. Then I chose to restore my settings as I have another android phone and a tablet, never done this before and it worked like a charm. I have 18 apps to download plus a shed-load of updates etc. I started the downloads and went away for a while, then came back expecting some of the apps to be installed; still downloading. Then I get a message to update to upgrade to 4.2.1, which I thought was already on the phone, so I installed the system update. Rebooted great. Now its downloading chrome so slowly I think it might have to go back to Google. I have other devices running 4.2.1 with good wifi speeds so I think this is a hardware issue...

Uk Nexus 4 user here.
I actually bought 2 Nexus 4 over the xmas period + a Nexus 10. One for me and one for my wife.
I use BT home hub with fibre to the cabinet broadband. I get 30-40mbit download on my laptop, 25-35 mbit on my Nexus 10, and on both Nexus 4 the speed varies from the normal 30 mbit download to a slowed 1.3mbit download. At the time of the slowdown the upload remains at 20mbit. I can get the faster speed by turning the wifi connection on and off or by pressing the reset button on my router. The Nexus 10 is not affected by this issue.

I got the exact same behaviour on my N4 as the one mentioned in comment 82. None of my other devices (including my nexus 7) are affected by slow download speeds. Toggling WiFi on/off or restarting the router will speed up the WiFi on the N4 for a while. My router is an Asus RT-N56U.

I too am having similar issues with my Nexus 4. My ISP(Charter Communications) provides Wi-Fi speeds of up to 30mbps at home, but my Nexus 4 sees a maximum of 11mbps down and 5mbps up. I'm certain that it is not a router issue, mainly because the rest of my devices are receiving speeds close to what my ISP offers.
I have attached two screenshots taken from both my Nexus 4 and my desktop computer.

Have same issues with my nexus 4. I have 80meg fibre optic broadband and getting barely over 1meg on my phone after a while. If turn WiFi off on phone and on again its back up to full speed again. No such issues with my nexus 7 or nexus 10 so its a phone problem not jellybean. Please fix this asap

Same issue. With Airplane mode on I get really fast wi-fi, with it turned off, my wi-fi drops dramatically. I've tried resetting my Airport Extreme router, rebooting the phone but nothing seems to work except enabling Airplane mode with the wi-fi turned on which isn't exactly ideal for obvious reasons.

Ok...here's a good temporary fix that worked for me just now based on some comments on the XDA forums. Go into settings and turn the "wi frequency band" from auto to 5ghz only. BOOM...problem solved, at least while I'm at home til Google issues a software update. As for those that don't have newer routers outputting a 5 ghz band, I dunno what to tell ya for now.

Had the same problem, at home i was connecting to my d-link dir300 router with custome dd-wrt firmware - speed was realy slow and timing out every 20 sec.
But when i was at work i connected to Buffalo whr-hp-g54 with stock firmware, after 2hours of difrent testing - speed was perfect about 54mbit.
Why google hate d-link so much?

I also have the problem that my wifi is horrible slow and I think that if I have bluetooth connected same time it just totally crushes the wifi speeds.
I thought that my Transformer Infinity was bad on wifi since it has same antenna for bt and wifi but I just conducted speedtest on both of them within same wifi network and Infinity is about 70% faster.
So disapointed in Google that they haven't fixed this issue even if it has existed this long time.

I have the same slow WiFi speed issue that others report here. So disappointed! Nexus 7 works fine with my router! Nexus 4 not. The only way I can get higher WiFi speed is to connect nexus 4 to nexus 7 by enabling WiFi direct! But is annoying to need a tablet around just to connect with decent speed to wlan! I hope is a software problem!

Similar issue. I am experiencing horrible performance on 802.11n (2.4 & 5Ghz) and 802.11g on my Nexus 4. Oddly enough, 802.11b works OKish. It does not appear to be an issue with the network since laptops, iPads and iPhones in my house all behave normally. It doesn't appear to be a unit defect since I went through an RMA and the replacement has the same problem (or I'm very unlucky). I've tried disabling encryption but that did not help.
On the router, I'm seeing the Rx rate for the Nexus dropping to 6M while Tx stays at 72M (802.11n). Once buffering starts, the Rx rate spikes up once for about a sec and drops immediately. Eventually, the apps give up and tell me there's an issue with the network.

Just bought a new netgear router as I thought it might cure this problem with my Nexus 4 but it exactly the same as with my BT Home Hub so it is definitely a phone problem. When I first turn WiFi on my phone I get over 50mbps download and 20mbps upload. After a few minutes I only get 1mbps download but still get 20mbps upload. What's going on? If I toggle the WiFi off and on again on my phone I get full speed again for a short time. I love this phone but will have to return it if this doesn't get fixed soon. Please sort it ASAP

My specific issue is with a BT homehub in the UK of which my speed will drop from 30mbps to around 2mbps after being connected for about 2-3hours. My issue seems to be fixed by turning GPS off but obviously this isnt convenient.
I stumbled on a "fix" while playing with my APN settings:
1) Go into Mobile networks in settings (Under "more" in Wireless and Networks)
2) Go into "Access point Names"
3) Click on your APN (if you have mutiple active ones do this for all)
4) Under "APN type" remove "supl" from the list (mine now says "default, mms")
5) Reboot
Now my Wifi does not drop speed at all even with GPS on.
So "supl" has something to do with Assisted-GPS but my GPS is working just as well as it did before this change.

Just received my Nexus 4 on Friday, wifi isn't just slow, it's completely unusable on my home router, a D-Link DSL-2780 supplied by TalkTalk. Having tried at my girlfriends house, it works great (A Thompson router, supplied by O2).
Am currently using a workaround by sharing internet from my Mac to the phone, but it's very far from being ideal.

He's changing the Signal-Interval setting on the router from 100msec to 10msec (as per this screenshot:http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=504836 )
This looks related to DTIM and the "Minimize battery usage when Wi-Fi is on" setting

There must be other bugs at work here, too.
I'd love Google to comment at some point so that people know that it is being worked on.
I really guess many more people are experiencing this without noticing really. The dark figure is probably much higher than can be guessed from the posts here.

Not a single setting on the phone itself has made the blindest bit of difference for me, I've ticked and unticked every possible option, multiple times.
However, the tip from #121 worked -http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=504836 - it allowed my phone to actually load content. Connection was still sketchy, but at least I could load pages, email and the play store, etc. Previously they all just timed out.
I've now set-up a separate wireless device connected to my D-Link via ethernet, purely for the Nexus. Ridiculous, but it's the only solid solution until there's an official fix.
It does seem we're possibly discussing different bugs here though, my problem is that the phone connects to the D-Link DSL-2780, and stays connected, however refuses to load anything, play store times out, pages hang, nothing will work as it should. Those who are experiencing disconnections are possibly experiencing a different (Yet similar, and equally annoying) problem? Though it could all be related to shoddy drivers?

Send them straight back to google, if enough of us do this they will have to implement a fix in this defective product. I am on my second Nexus 4 which still has the same wi fi fault being described here. This one will also be going back. Very easy return process by the way, just go on the google play help site, request a call back to your home, describe the problem, tell them about all the other users on these forums having the same problem and they will get a replacement in the post to you. You can only do this during the first 16 days of having the phone delivered to you.

Luckily the router in question was at my girlfriend's house not mine. I have spoken to a Googler, they have offered me a replacement after exhausting their troubleshooting. The Wifi works brilliantly on other networks though (not hardware issue) so I will keep this phone in the hope that a software fix is issued OTA.
Not really good enough to work on some networks only though... not for a flagship product like this.

SOLUTION:
Alright it took me a few hours of tinkering with the driver, but here it is..
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I'm not responsible if your phone self-combusts and causes you and your house to burn down with it.
You need to be root on your phone for this to work and to have adb (USB debugging) enabled.
> adb shell
shell@android:/ $ su
shell@android:/ # mount -t remount,rw /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system /system
shell@android:/ # cd /system/etc/wifi
shell@android:/system/etc/wifi # cp WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini.bak # MAKE A BACKUP
#### On your computer, run this
> adb pull /system/etc/wifi/WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini
69 KB/s (5577 bytes in 0.078s)
# Edit the WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini file on your computer:
# Replace the line that contains "gEnableBmps=1" by "gEnableBmps=0"
# Then,
> adb push WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini /sdcard/
106 KB/s (5577 bytes in 0.050s)
#### Back again in the adb shell:
shell@android:/system/etc/wifi # cp -v /sdcard/WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini
Reboot, and you should be getting normal speed on all networks.
BMPS means Beacon Mode Power Save. I don't really know what that means, and what the implications of changing that setting are, particularly on battery life.
Maybe there's a better way to tinker with the settings to retain the battery benefits and regain the ability to use all networks?
So far Google hasn't showed any sign of even looking at this issue despite the hundreds of frustrated customers, so if you guys find better settings, please post them here. Thanks.

So far Google hasn't showed any sign of even looking at this issue despite the hundreds of frustrated customers, so if you guys find better settings, please post them here. Thanks.

I had also very bad wlan perfomance with Nexus 4 - it was unusable. The situation could be solved by changing the beacon intervall from 100ms to 20ms in the wlan settings of our router, it is a Logilink WL0081.
Perhaps this also helps with other routers.

Update on #136: N4 went from 80% to 50% battery in 6 hours, without any user input, with cell and wifi on and BMPS turned off.
Not sure what the normal rate of battery consumption is but I'm pretty sure my GNexus was much more efficient than that.

Regarding comment #136 : thanks for the info you posted! I tried out your method and thought it had finally fixed things for me, but unfortunately such was not the case.
After turning off gEnableBmps, my Nexus 4 was (for the first time ever) nice and zippy with wifi on my Verizon HomeFusion router. Previously, it was incredibly slow with this router and none of the tweaks I'd tried making to both the phone and the router ever made any difference. After implementing your above method, it was pulling stuff down from the Play Store at about 4MB/s, whereas previously it was around 200KB/s.
But after I started doing some more testing with this change to my phone, I found that either rebooting the phone or letting it sit unused for a while would knock the wifi speed severely down. Turning wifi on and off didn't seem to reduce the speed, however.
Then while using my phone today (still with the above change enabled) I noticed my battery was taking a huge hit, compared to what it's normally like. The battery usage was showing the Android OS as the culprit (makes sense, given what I changed on my phone) and was using even more of the battery than the screen was.
So I undid the change and am now back to dealing with crappy, slow speeds all the time on my phone. Sigh.
I'm really sick of this problem. :(

The solution in comment #136 worked for me, and has persisted for 3-4 hours or so working correctly, even through reboots.
For the record, there appear to be numerous different WiFi connectivity issues with the Nexus 4. If #136 doesn't solve it for you, it means you have a different problem than is being discussed by the majority of this thread.
In my case, my Nexus 4 performed reliably (albeit at a max of 7-8Mbps due to congestion) to my router on the 2.4Ghz band, but on 5Ghz would drop to double-digit kbps after an initial 30-60 seconds of full speed performance.
This initial period of proper function followed by a major dip in speed is what has led so many people in this thread to say "I've fixed it!" and then a few hours later post that it was a false positive. This one does not appear to be a false positive. At least one of the N4 connectivity issues definitely depends on Beacon Mode Power Saving being disabled.
I have not compared battery performance after disabling it (and probably will not tonight as there are approximately 2 feet of snow outside my window and I may lose power at any moment) but I would expect it intuitively to have a dramatically negative effect on battery life. However, at least now we have a clue as to where the problem lies.

@#139 - If you were getting 200KB/s prior to fixing anything, it doesn't feel like the same problem as the rest of us where the connection is virtually unusable. It could be related though.
@#141 - Thank you for the feedback. I've actually measured the battery impact (roughly):
When the phone is idle (screen off, no user actions), with cell and Wifi on, good signal, for 5+ hours:
- With BMPS turned off: battery loses ~ 5% per hour
- With BMPS turned on: battery loses ~ 0.5% per hour
So yes, it makes a huge difference and I'm hoping there is a better fix.
There's reason for hope: I've E-mailed a Google developer and he said he would follow up on this.

#136 and #121 seem related. for me simply unchecking the minimize battery usage option made a huge difference (see #122)
I had reliable connection to access point with good signal strength, but close to unusable bandwidth. Nothing seemed to help (GPS on/off, BT on/off, reboot, airplaine mode, factory reset, etc., changing channels, changing DTIM interval on router) All other devices on the network worked fine.
after unchecking that option I have reliable connection and 10+MB bandwidth in FCC test -- going on 5 days already, so it's not a short-lived pseudo improvement.
I can't say how this affects battery life, though, since I didn't keep track of it before
this is with N4, Linksys WRT54G, DD-WRT firmware (v24-sp2), 802.11g only. the beacon interval is 100ms, DTIM is 1

I have already done a post here (#84). I tried the suggested method with setting the beacon interval to 20ms but it didnt fix my problem.
I just want to clarify that I do not have the problem that my wifi dosent work at all, it is just that the download speed is not great. When the phone first connects to my home network after being out of range I usually get download speeds at 30+ Mbit/s but after some minutes it drops to 8 Mbit/s and stays there. None of my other devices act the same, they all have a constant high wifi speed. No router firmware or settings seems to help. At the university I dont have the same problem.
Google please fix all these wifi-related problems with the next update! It seems that something with the wifi on the n4 isnt what it should be.

After updateing to 4.2.2 with high hope this would be fixed, it indeed was not fixed. My wifi at home works only intermittently with my Nexus 4 and usaly shows full signal but a dismal throughput rates of around 0.15 Mbit on a 10Mbit connection. My wife's iphone and ipad work fine as well as my kids ipods. My Nexus 10 also works fine on this same connection. Seeing 4.2.2 did not fix the issue I went to playing with the router settings. What I found is that if I set the 2.4 Ghz band from mixed b,g,n to G only the issue seems to have gone away. I am using a Linksys V4200 with the latest cloud connect firmware. Hope this helps someone.

Following the solution on #136:
1. Edit the WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini file on your phone in /system/etc/wifi with any Root Explorer app
2. Replace the line that contains "gEnableBmps=1" by "gEnableBmps=0", save the file and check its permissions
3. Reboot and enjoy working WiFi with your router (no need to change its settings in the first place.)

I did the same as #161 EricJEdw...@gmail.com and changed my TP-Link TD-W8960N router from mixed to the N channel and this now sticks to the quick speed. Before I was getting 2mbps and having to disconnect and connect from the wifi on the N4 to get a quick speed. Now I'm getting 17mbps all the time.
With that said, this is obviously a problem with the N4 and this doesn't really solve the problem as it could be that if I went into a wifi spot which had mixed mode enabled then I would be getting a much slower speed than I should.

Now on my replacement N4 which turned out to again have negligible response to my D-Link DSL-2780 router from TalkTalk. Tried other routers and got slightly improved results but still not useable. I then read these articles and decided to give the various solutions a try.
My final solution is as follows and only requires tweaks to the DSL router wireless page.
Changed to 'g' only
Fixed channel to one not busy round here (5)
Lowered Signal Interval from 100 to 15 msec
Fragmentation lowered to 2307
RTS lowered to 2306
Everything here is back to normal (4 off laptops, GNex, N7, Printer, 3 off IP Cams)and my N4 works at top speed (6.5Mbps/0.7Mbps)

Yep, there's really something odd going on. For those that have the issues have you tried to test the speed (using something like the speedtest.net app) and then turn off wifi on the N4 and then turn it back on again and then run the speedtest once again. What appears to be happening is that after a certain period of time it goes back to being very slow, until you then turn wifi off and on again.

I have been having lots of problems with my wifi connection on my N4. Tried loads of the suggested fixes, also 4.2.2 ..none worked.
Just switched broadband providers today from TalkTalk (dreadful) to BT Broadband. Plugged in the BT Homehub 3 and within minutes a full signal and fast speeds on the N4, no slowing down. The router I had problems with was a D-Link DSL-2780 router from TalkTalk.
Granted the N4 should work straight out of the box with any modern router, but it seems some routers just don't want to play.

Now more things, I can connect to the ASL26555 without a glitch my laptop(intel wlan), my old Nokia 5800, and surprisingly enough my girlfriend's Xperia Arc S (on gingerbread) with also has Qualcomm modem inside as our beloved Nexus 4.

It must be an unstable router issue. I have a Linksys G router which I need to try but can't find it yet. BTW I am running 4.2.2

Hi I got Nexus a few days ago and tried to resolve this specific problem.
Surfing and downloading apps is been very slow, so slow so you can't work with the phone or do anything. App download takes forever.
Reading the content above i noticed that someone said to turn of "Location access" under settings.
I can confirm this resolved the issue. I.E the WIFI increased massively however not as good as iPhone 5 but now at least decent.
I am returning this phone however I think in Andriod will be a very good OS and with all the development it will over take iOS.
Thank you
Essa

To confirm on my Nexus 4 4.2.2 I am also seeing this behaviour that is:
1. On connecting wifi I get a connection between 10 and 12MB
2. After 2 hours the speed drops to between 1.5 and 2mb, which is not enough to sustain a lag free hd video :(
I tried various options above
-> Fixed the router to G channel - made no difference
-> Turned off battery saving whilst wifi on - no difference
-> Disabled mobile data - no difference
-> turning off gps - no difference
I then did two things
-> in my APN I noticed their was no type so I set this to mms
-> I forced the wifi channel to 2.4
Since then the speed has stayed fast. I suspect the issue was resolved by the forcing of the channel.
Out of interest on the router side I have a Netgear 3700 v2 using the Open Source Firmware Gargoyle which is a front end for Open WRT which as I understand it has origins with the opendd firmware.
I think if Google gave us more configurable options at the front end that may be a possible work around until this is resolved properly.

#193 Highly likely this is a placebo solution. Have a look again after the requisite amount of time and you may see speeds have dropped again. The reason I say this is because setting the Wi-Fi Frequency Band option (not the same thing as a channel) to allow only 2.4GHz connections shouldn't have any effect unless you were originally trying to connect to a 5GHz AP. Most routers put out both a 2.4GHz AP and a 5GHz AP, under different SSIDs.
I am also unable to connect to 5GHz AP's successfully. You may want to have a look athttp://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=49450

There appear to be many issues covered in this thread. Mine seems to have been solved by removing "supl" from the APN. (Thanks #104)
Prior to this change, I couldn't watch YouTube or HBO GO over WiFi due to horrible buffering. Now, both services works as expected.

I can connect fine to 5Ghz if I have that enabled and the second band on the router enabled. It could be setting the APN not null made a difference but as this is mobile data not wifi it doesn't make too much sense.
I have single band on the router (don't like the idea of dual band for silly reasons :) ) - i've not worked out whether that means 5Ghz is used or not as it has B/G and N listed as protocol and I thought N was 5Ghz
Another factor - though again unlikely, where I am using the wifi I have a very poor mobile signal and I wondered if this was having some form of affect.

#194 I don't think our issues are related. My lowest connection is 2mb and generally is after 2 hours (from 10) (not necessarily of activity). I forced the router to b/g and this made no difference at all. I did try a 5Ghz only solution but the range of 5Ghz is painful I discounted that as a valid work around.
Agreed re channel and band I am clear on the difference just used the wrong wording :)

B, G, and N can all be used over 2.4GHz.
Only A (very old) and N can be used on 5GHz.
If you are able to set it to use B or G or any mixed mode, you are dealing with the 2.4GHz AP.

With the above setup, I see full wifi signals, but apps cannot connect (wifi icon grayed out)
If I changed Beacon Interval to 50ms, Preamble to Short, reception is much better, but cannot connect once in a while (wifi icon blue most of the time)
If I update the DDWRT FW to v24 SP2 (5/8/11), reception is perfect with default settings, and connection is rock solid.
For those of you that use DDWRT, update to a newer version. It might solve the problem.

#194 setting the wifi back to auto has not lost the fast connection so as indicated that would appear to have been a red herring. So the only item left was setting an apn type where one wasn't set already. Doesn't seem to make sense unless the phone is struggling when the apn type is invalid? Anyway for me my conclusion is the apn type being blank (or maybe null) was at fault. Phone has been good for around 10 hours. Will post if this changes
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #204
This seems more interesting. It appears the type I put in wasn't valid or didn't work. Only realised when I left home for work. Maybe that makes more sense that the download rate is affected by the connection to the mobile network. Now cleared the apn type again and 3g working again - will review tonight when I am home to see if my speed now goes back to 2mb. Will then see if its a case of having a 3g connection around causing the problem?
mi...@gmail.com <mi...@gmail.com> #205
My issue seems to have been resolved by not having a blank apn type. Set it to default, mms and speeds remained good through last night. Doesn't make sense to me why a mobile setting should affect the wifi but it seems this is a common thread so one worth pursuing.

Yet another unhappy Nexus 4 owner here with slow wifi issues. There seems to be more than one problem affecting people. Mine is of very slow performance. Connectivity is fine with my D-link 2750 router. Issue is irregular in that occasionally I get full performance but most of the time slow to the point of not being able to stream YouTube etc. All other devices scream along with no issues on the same network. I've tried a number of different things to resolve it without success. At first it seemed to be a security issue but running the router unsecured did not help. I will try a different brand router later and report back. If this was an iPhone it would be all over the media how Apple have a defective product!

Router firmware is up to date: R1.01h11
encryption: WPA2-PSK
mode: B/G/N mixed. Tried g only, but didn't work.
I don't have WMM as an option, but I turned on the QoS algorithm to no effect.
Other devices in the house that are working well wit this router: Asus laptop; iPad, iPhone, Macbook, MythTV (wired). Also in the wireless band, we have a cordless phone.

Same problem here. I had my Nexus 4 for almost 2 months, and waiting for a fix from Google. Wifi is slow, not good at all for streaming video, only acceptable for light browsing, and absolutely impossible to install or update anything from Google Play (it always times out).
I tried with every possible configuration on the router (switching to b only, assigning a fixed channel, playing with the MTU, etc) Tried every mentioned configuration on the phone (airplane mode, GPS off, some configurations related to mobile data, etc). Some of these changes helped for only a few minutes, and then the speed went down again.
Of course, every other device on the wireless network works fine: 3 laptops (one of them is quite old) and a smart tv (all of these devices can easily stream video from the network).
I hope we can get a fix soon (I hope it can be fixed with a software update and that it is not a hardware design flaw).

Just got a shiny new Nexus 4 today. I am on Rogers LTE. Since 4.2.1 lte being disabled, could that have affected the WiFi problem?
I have Shaw Extreme internet at home. 50+ down 10 up( Canada's uploads are horrid and cost a fortune).
Anyways my Nexus 4 is set in tune w my SMC wireless B,G, and N router.
Its as slow as dial up. Absolutely horrible for a new release product.
Google of all people I thought would not have let something like this get by them...my galaxy Nexus never had an issue, except for me breaking it by accident, hence my new Nexus 4.
Hopefully a fix will arrive soon.

I have 2 Nexus 4's (Mine and my wife's). They both experience slow download speeds when connected to 802.11n networks (between 500 Kb and 4 Mb with horrible packet loss... My ISP speed is 25 Mb Down, and 6 Mb up). Upload speeds seem to be fine. I have tried multiple routers, and the problem persists on all of them. All other devices (MacBook Air, Nexus 7, iPad 3, ASUS Win8 laptop, PS3, Wii U, Dish Hopper w/Sling) work perfectly fine. This is a problem with the Nexus 4 (BOTH of them) ONLY. Connecting to a wireless G router seems to "solve" the problem, but that is not a solution.

I sort of fixed in my specific environment :
- Set Apple TimeCapsule to Channel 40 for 5Ghz
- Edit WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini and have gChannelBondingMode5GHz=1 (check #136 for help on how to do it)
- Set Wi-fi frequency band to 5 Ghz only
It takes one minute or two for the Nexus 4 to catch the TimeCapsule but it eventually did then on speedtest my statistics are ping:25ms DL/UL=25Mbps (fiber connection), so it's still not as good as on first tries, but now it's stable and reproducible.
By the way, testing brother-in-law's router with both same Nexus 4, I only got 1Mbps Link speed while he had 70Mbps, so I guess it's a mix of hardware-software issue which could explain why Google couldn't either communicate or fix it quickly.

My N4 4.2.2 is a very strange thing, when I connect it goes to dowload max 40 KB / sec even if the connection with speedtest and 'to 5 MB.
In the morning when you reuse it works fine and download 1MB per sec.

not sure if this is the right place, but I have been experiencing slow speeds with Nexus4. Significantly slower than any android phone i have ever used. How slow? to watch a 90 second YouTube video, I have to wait 5 minutes for it to load, usually give up and do something else. This happens at home, work, other places as well, so is not an issue with my wifi setup. I am on TMObile.

I had the same exact problem until now, it seems turning off the gps as I read above seems to work. But I shouldn't be required to turn gps off and restart WIFI on my brand new nexus 4 (4.2.2) to get normal WIFI speeds. Before I turned gps off WIFI was slower by a factor of 10 ( 2mbps instead of 20mbps).
Google please fix this!

Did't notice slow Wi-Fi yet, but as I currently have no DSL @home, I use my Nexus 4 to tether for my Nexus 7. Despite the fact, that tethering completely dies (disconnect and it takes ages to disable tethering) after some hours, it gets very slow after some minutes. Speedtest at N7 has DL of .5 Mbit while at the N4 itself with HSDPA I have 7 Mbit
Both devices running 4.2.2

Whenever I connect to my home wifi router: Tenda w268R its seems that there is no internet connection, however all other devices at my home seem to work fine with this router...
phone: nexus 4 8gb, bought it yesterday..
also, my carrier internet works fine, and I tried connecting with my friends wifi(same router) and it was working, and I even tried duplicating his settings but it did not work for me :/

Nexus 4 w/ 4.2.2 - after some time in standby, I can only get 1Mbps up/down with 2.4 GHz WiFi from 40 Mbps before in the local network. 5 GHz is not that bad, but still noticeable (dropped to 10 Mbps from 40). Also, not reproducable with my N7 or other WiFi devices. It is se4ems to be the N4 WiFi driver that has trouble getting the chipset back online from powersafe mode.

1 month old Nexus 4. After a while the wifi download speed drops to 2-3Mbps, it is about 45Mbps after disabling and re-enabling wifi. Upload speed doesn't seem to be affected by the problem and is always around 16Mbps.

Description

Please describe the problem in detail. Be sure to include:
- Steps to reproduce the problem.
Whenever I'm connected to wifi.
- What happened.
Nexus 4 wifi connection extremely slow. speed test on phone showing 9kbps down / 333 kbps up. All other devices have very good connectivity. In wifi settings, link speed says 36Mbps. It takes literally hours to download apps. If I switch off wifi, cell service takes seconds to download and install apps. Even restarting in safemode doesn't help the behavior.
- What you think the correct behavior should be.
Fast wifi.
Don't forget to mention which device you have, and which version of Android
is installed on it. (Find it under Home > Menu > Settings > About phone.)
Device: LG Nexus 4 Build #JOP40C
Android: 4.2
Router: Motorola SBG900
Wireless signal: 11b/11g
If you happen to have a development environment, please also run "adb
bugreport" and archive the output as it could help diagnose the problem.
