I have similar disconnection issues when using the Plantronics Savor M1100. The time that the Bluetooth stays connected to the device during a phone conversation before the Bluetooth connection drops varies - sometimes is 5 minutes, sometimes 10 but always the call quality is horrendous on the other side. The savor is up to date as well as the Nexus 4. I will say that even on my side the call quality is not clear at all. I pair the Savor with any of my other phones (iPhone 4 or BB 9700) and it is cristal clear. THX, Dan

I agree with sle...@slewis.org i am also facing same issues. There is another big issue/feature is missing that is switching the bluetooth automatically..
2 bluetooth's --- 1st one is headset [Plantronics,Nokia] and 2nd one is car inbuilt. Paired both bluetooth's and connected to 1st one and I moved in to the car and the nexus 4 won't switch the bluetooth from my 1st headset to car in-built bluetooth. I tried the same with iPhone,Nokia[Windows] and it works like a charm. This is a basic feature which is missing. with bluetooth 4.0 I dont know what kind of features LG or Google trying to bring??? I think it is also related to the OS as well.

I concur with sle...@slewis.org - I too am experiencing the same issues. Dropped or cycling when device is paired with bluetooth handsets (LG, Motorola, and Jawbone) on Nexus 4 with Android 4.2.1. I have not experienced these issues before when connecting to other phones.
Please fix!

After reading a number of posts, I found that I have to turn the WIFI radio off in order to operate Bluetooth accessories. THIS IS NOT A FIX. I believe this magnifies a larger issue that has yet to be dissolved. This should be a priority fix, especially considering the laws that prohibit cell phone use without such handsfree devices while driving!
Google please respond with an ETA on the fix.

Bluetooth issues when using in my car. Haven't experienced any pairing, cycling or disconnect issues as some of other users. Phonebook downloads just fine....incomming calls clearly display contact information...the fundemental problem is that voice activated dial via incar does not seem to recognize the phonebook. Never had this problem with other phones....This problem needs to get fixed ASAP particularly give laws are against it and its simply frustrating to have the a nice phone with simple things not working...

The cycling issue in the car is resolved for me. It was the car asking the Nexus 4 for permission to read the address book. The dialog on the Nexus used a very small font and at first I didn't see the "always allow" checkbox to avoid the constant interruption.
Still having issues like others have described where wifi drops and reconnects pretty often. Seems to happen more when bluetooth is also on.

Hi,
I also have problem with the bluetooth handsfree in my 2003 bmw e39.
The phone gets paired and then it disconnects, connects, disconnects and so it goes on. Every 5-6 second.
I have a old sony ericsson handset witch the phone works well with, and the music plays great.
Just factory reset but the problem is still there.
My other phones has worked with my bmw without trouble at all, old sony ericsson phones, iphone 4, galaxy S2 and last a S3. But the nexus just disconnects all the time.
It has the latest 4.2.1 sw.
Hope this will be fixed as i love my bt hf.

Same issue with Bluetooth on BMW e46, previously paired successfully with HTC desire running on android 2.1.
Nexus 4 pairs but then gets stuck in a loop requesting access to phonebook and then Bluetooth drops.
I wonder whether this occurs because of the way contacts are stored and handled on the nexus 4?

I have Bluetooth issues with my Nexus 4 and my BMW E46 which worked perfect with my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S before it (even Motorola RAZR dumbphone worked). Oddly I don't have any problems with Nexus 4 and A2DP streaming, just the phone protocol.
I do not believe the issue is related to the phone book because I have tried it both with the address book sharing and without and in both cases it completely fails.
I get pairing, on rare occasions it works but 90% of the time I receive a call and the phone shows the Bluetooth is established but I cannot hear the other party or them hear me and eventually the car lights up a Bluetooth error that can only be cleared by turning off the car (rebooting the phone does not fix the problem). I have turned off Bluetooth pairing it is so bad.

I had many of the same problems: dropped connections, cycling, intermittent inability to import contacts and call history. All of these problems were rectified with 4.2.1 and the phone and hands free link worked flawlessly together. Unfortunately because of battery charge reporting errors the phone had to be replaced. The replacement phone was immediately updated to 4.2.1. All of the problems I experienced with 4.2 returned - very discouraging. Everything with regard to build number, kernel version is identical to the old phone. This would lead me to believe that Bluetooth issues with the Nexus 4 are not necessarily software related and more rooted in a hardware weakness that varies from phone to phone. ...but what do I know!

My wife and I both have the Nexus 4 and we both have the issue of bluetooth failing to activate after several hours of uptime. Worse yet, if Google Wallet is enabled, Wallet will start draining battery at an absurd rate (about 8%/hr idle instead of normal 3-4%/hr). Rebooting the phone fixes both the bluetooth and battery drain issues until they reappear again after several hours.

I have serious challenges with my Nexus 4 running 4.2.1 pairing with my Pioneer AVIC x940BT receiver. In general I am able to pair my phone for hands free, but I have big challenges streaming audio. I have been able to do so only intermittently. Recently I unpaired my phone and device, and then re-paired, and was able to utilize the car stereo to stream pandora. When I turned the car off and left, then returned 10 minutes later, the device would no longer connect via bluetooth. I think the problem is somehow in the toggling between bluetooth Handsfree+Audio profile.
I also frequently have problems with dropped handsfree connections. Sometimes I will be able to hold a call for an extended period, and others I won't be able to keep the connection alive for more than 2 minutes.

Similar problems with my 2005 Prius. Car would recognize call in progress but not get any audio through speakers or car mike. Solved by resetting phone and then re-pairing but then more problems happened again. At one point couldn't turn BT on on the N4. Solved by soft reset again but car still doesn't pick up audio. At one point N4 said connected to ANOTHER BT device that was in the car but the power was off on that device. Also sometimes car reports device not in range when it is in the car with BT operating.

It's a known problem by everyone except the Google Device Support team. I sent back three Nexus 4's; the original one, and the two replacements they subsequently sent me because they all had the identical buggy behavior: the bluetooth issue that this thread is discussing, and the wifi bug described in issue 36949180 : http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065 .

I rather doubt this is a nexus 4 issue - 4.2 and 4.2.1 messed up Bluetooth on my friend's Galaxy Nexus. They should have an option to allow users to delay getting an update until it is 'release' quality. Pushing beta software to users - which messes up their previously working phones - is not good.
Remember last year? It wasn't until 4.0.3 that ICS was release quality. Hopefully this time 4.2.2 does it.

I agree that I don't think it's just a nexus 4 issue. Other non Nexus android users are also reporting it. I think it's just the fact that the Nexus 4 by default is running THE latest version of Jellybean and 4.2.1 has bugs.

@38: Tell them about it, send email to the Google Board of Directors: directors@google.com. Providing the directors of the company with unfiltered customer feedback is probably a good idea, especially if it is done politely. However, be aware that corporate attitude percolates down from the top, not the other way. I fully expect any feedback along these lines to be met with the same level of bland indifference that we have noted regarding fixing the problems with Android 4.2.1 in general, and with the Nexus 4 in particular.
However, here's what I sent:

But the launch of the phone was positively smooth sailing compared to the Google support operations which have been, essentially, in non-effect since trouble reports about the phone's wifi and bluetooth issues started trickling shortly after the launch. I have the same issue, I have a Jawbone HD, and what happens is that when I am connected on a Wi-Fi network, and Bluetooth, the Bluetooth drops a few times and then it stays connected, however Wi-Fi drops and stays off until finish the call, then it reconnects to my Wi-Fi network, as soon as I get another call, it does the same. Fundamental features need to work flawlessly (Bluetooth, WiFi, network connectivity - all of which are problematic with OS 4.2), the "extras" aren't as critical. I cannot and will not recommend anyone to buy a Nexus 4 until they resolve the dependability issues.

#68 At this point i guess calling 855-83-NEXUS is the only option. The more people complain regarding these BT issues the higher our chances (at least I hope) to get this issue resolved. My GN had some BT related problems initially, but all were resolved after the first update. Got 4.2.2 two days ago, it didn't fix the phone-to-car issue. In fact, it broke the only working option I had - N4 connected to Garmin GPS.
Update: N4-to-Garmin connection was restored by removing pairing info from both devices, rebooting both and pair again. N4-to-car still doesn't work.

I have the same problem like many others here:
My Nexus 4 does not work on a Mercedes E-Class (S211). It pairs, displays the signal strength, I'm able to dial a number, but cannot hear the other side and they can't hear me as well. this may be a good workaround for Nexus 4:
I turn off the Bluetooth and turn it back on and it connects to my car Bluetooth. it's a hassle that it doesn't connect automatically, but I have to make a note for myself that whenever I enter my car do this on/off switch to make it work.

4.2.2 fixed nothing! My BMW still does not receive contacts and the phone can not be managed from the steering wheel (or voice controlled). The only capability the phone detects is "Phone Audio". I have tried deleting, rebooting, re-pairing - you name it!! This is a really serious issue Google!! You need to up the priority!! It goes to the core capabilities of what a modern phone needs to be able to do. Where I live, it is LAW to use handsfree for in-phone calls. I am on the road all the time for work - my Galaxy Nexus is no longer on the road with me :(

I have the same issue as the other Mercedes owners with the Audio 20, in a Vito in this case, namely phone connects but no voice audio is present only key clicks can be heard. The phone sort of works, quietly, with my Garmin Nuvi. Been doing some digging and it appears to be the Nexus 4 uses the A2DP profile not the HFP/HSP profile of old. Tried in a brand new Volvo and all works beautifully with the phone bringing up both phone and media audio, interestingly both the Garmin and the Volvo use secure pairing whereas the Merc uses the old input a four digit code method. It can't be anything to do with BT version 4 compatibility as my HTC One V works with the Merc, so it must be the profile - hopefully Merc will have a firmware fix for the radio!!!

After the update there a 2 New problems, first is that wifi does not reconnect to my Router anymore. It does not even find the WLAN anymore on its Own unless I either turn wifi off and on again or enter and leave flightmode. In rare cases it needs a reboot.
Second Problem is with BT, since 4.2.2 audio gets heavily distorted every couple of minutes. Playback has To be paused and restarted then. Also BT Seems To Hang every 3 to 4 days and a reboot is needed.

I can report that there were issues relating to nexus 4 4.2.2 firmware and ford mondeo 2008 in car bluetooth. The address book transfer is not successful and frequent disconnection to the in car bluetooth. The car bluetooth is working ok with all other phones. However nexus 4 works well with jabra freeway, no disconnection and streaming music without distortion.
I have managed to disabled the phonebook transfer during initial pairing , as a workaround , together with wifi off (use sony smartconnect to automate it). It seemed to make and receive call ok but without phonebook access. Some people said stopping the pbap service in Bluetooth sharing service might also help.
Try it and it may just work for your car.

I encounter the following issues with my Nexus 4 on Android 4.2.2 connecting to my Opel Astra via bluetooth:
- contacts are not transfered, no question on the phone for allowance
- no control of the phone via car controls (can't take incoming call nor make a call by myself)
- If I have an incoming call and take it on the phone while a connection exists, I can hear the caller on car audio, but the cars microphone seems not to work. To exit the call via car controls is still not possible.
- The connection itself seems to be stable.
Would be nice if this can be addressed ASAP.

Anyone any luck to get the resolution ? Does the factory reset work ? Could this issue be related to some of the android app I have installed ?

I have found some temporary luck by clearing the cache of running programs. I have found an app to do this quickly with one click. I say temporary because it can work during the entire time I have the earbud on, but then goes back into failure mode at the next use.

My Nexus One bluetooth worked delightfully with my Prius. My new Nexus 4 has me pulling out my hair.
At this point I have to shutdown my car, restart my car, and then shutdown and restart this phone, in order to receive/place handsfree calls. I cannot switch from handfree to speaker or handset under any circumstances I can find.
Bluetooth on the Nexus 4 is definitely broken, and where is Google? Not a peep from Google, nothing from LG.
The clueless Google "Nexus Tech Support" lady said, "your device may not be compatible with your car." Are you kidding me! This person had never heard of people using their cell phone through a car's audio system! Are you kidding me, Google?
At least, couldn't Google provide a list of cars that are compatible with their android phones/OS, BEFORE people waste hours stressfully trying to resolve this on their own?
How many hours of unsuspecting customers' time have been wasted with this idiocy!
This is so, so wrong. Really irresponsible. Google/LG should not allowed to continue to sell a device if it does not work, without compensating consumers for the trouble. This is consumer fraud, plain and simple, and particularly unconscionable and dangerous that this dysfunction happens in moving vehicles. Why are there no recalls for these devices??
If anyone to talk about a class action suit, I'm in! I suspect only a very, very large and public lawsuit will get these unresponsive, irresponsible, uncommunicative businesses to act responsibly.

Well done Google.
Been following these threads (there are about 30 on this bug tracker, tracking similar BT issues) for about 8 weeks now and I keep seeing the same trends:
Google won't take responsibility for the fault. One developer implies it will be fixed in Key Lime Pie.
Now, I would happily wait 6 months for that to happen, perhaps even plumping for an N5, but judging by Googles complete inability to recognise, communicate and fix the issue, I've just ordered a Galaxy S3 for £20 more than an N4. Google have simply failed to instil faith in their competence at fixing this and this is seen among other users on these threads.
So congratulations Google. Your incompetence is now not only losing existing customers, but also potential new ones. Which is a shame because the N4 seems like a great piece of kit, save for this one minor bug (I played on a friends N4).
I'll be unsubscribing from all trackers soon. Come Thursday, I just won't give a shit about the Nexus as a brand anymore.
For reference, I have borrowed an old HTC Wildfire (after my Nokia E5 gave up) and now want to give the phone back and get something a bit quicker. N4 was in the spotlight, but now I've voted with my wallet. 8 weeks is frankly, long enough and in fact, this issue has gone on MUCH longer than this.
I'm not advocating others jump the Nexus ship. Google may well get their act together. But for me personally, I'll be moving into a job role soon where reliability of features on a phone is more important than anything else.

I have the same problem like many others here:
My Nexus 4 does not work on a Mercedes Audio 20 system. It pairs, displays the signal strength, I'm able to dial a number, but cannot hear the other side and they can't hear me as well. Adjusting volumes doesn't help. It works OK with the Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Desire
System:

Model Nexus 4
Android 4.2.2

Mercedes Audio/APS 20

I am running on stock 4.2.2, the latest version of JB, but I am facing a similar issue with bluetooth. my issue is not limited only to the car BT connectivity but also my MW 600 BT headset. It shows that Bluetooth is connected, but I am unable to hear the other person, i go back to handset and switch to bluetooth it works for sometime, only to repeat again. i have tried everything including only enabling phone audio, restarting the phone as well as unpair and pair the device, but to no effect. the issue continues. incidentally, my nexus is 2 months old and on the same version. the issue started around 2-3 weeks back, since then i am facing this and it is a huge problem

I'm experimenting the same issues listed here. But I moved my comments to issue# 39633 for several reasons:
- This problem now affects 4.2.2 too, and I guess it's just not audio streaming related, but audio over Bluetooth related.
- This thread has been starred just 136 times right now, vs. 932 on issue# 39633.
- This issue has not been assigned to any developer yet, and issue# 39633 has been assigned.
So guess what? Probably we'll get more attention on this problem if we post our comments on issue# 39633.

Nexus 4, Android 4.2.2, BMW E46 Navigation Professional
Pairing works, but I can not use the phone as there is a loop of disconnecting and re-connecting the bluetooth connection. Connection can be established for max. 2 seconds at once before getting disconnected - which at least was enough to take a look at the first page of the phonebook on the navigation system display, which looked fine to me.
Worked and still works like a charme with Nexus One on Stock Android 2.3.
Google, please help us!

Description
Never had an issue with the HS850 or the Audi with Nexus One via Bluetooth which is what I was using right up until a few days ago when the Nexus 4 arrived. Obviously the Nexus One is not on 4.2.1
This issue is making the phone fairly non-usable to me. We have a hands-free law here so I can't use the phone in the car if one of these two things does not work. And when not in the car, the HS850 is pretty essential to how I work.
Android Device:
==========
Android 4.2.1
Kernel Version 3.4.0-perf-ge039dcb
Build Number JOP40D
Model Nexus 4
Up to date with system updates
Bluetooth set to be visible only to paired devices
Bluetooth Devices:
===========
Audi MMI 6453
Motorola HS850
To reproduce, pair Nexus 4 running Android 4.2.1 with either of the above Bluetooth devices (the other was not present in any of my cases) and try to use it for a few minutes. Connection eventually "cycles" meaning it drops and comes back shortly thereafter or otherwise experiences intermittent sound quality issues rendering it useless.
