Same here. Face looks squished and tablet doesn't recognize it. Resetting and reregistering didn't help. The feature is completely broken.

Experiencing the same thing. It appears it's taking a 480p video, and squishing it into a square. So, your face appears fat in portrait view, and skinning in landscape view.

If you do face matching in one layout, it can't recognize you in the other.

Same thing on my Nexus 2013. Had to change back to pin code which is annoying when you dont have two hands because of its size.

Same issue on my Nexus 7 2013. It's squished but it somehow recognizes me. Nevertheless, this should be fixed, I hate seeing my warped face, plus people will think Nexus devices are trash.

Chiming in to agree that I have the same issue. Nexus 7 2013. It never recognizes my face now. Retraining doesn’t help either. Funny that the aspect ratio during retraining is correct for the front facing camera.

Ditto on the problem. Got it to work by training holding the tablet at an angle.  This needs to be fixed...

Hard to say if any complaining helps, this issue has still low priority :-( , so maybe we have to repair it somehow self. Is there an alternative face screen lock?

Google, get your shit together. You should not allow this to happen on the hardware that you provide.

2nd gen Nexus 7 : I have the same problem since the 4.4.3 update. Face unlock was working great -- and I loved using it -- but it won't recognize me now. Maybe I could take a picture and stretch it in some image program (Photoshop?) and point my Nexus 7 at the screen image to record a photo for face unlock... or Google could just fix the darn thing.

Upgraded to 4.4.3 and encountered severe problems with video (download & streaming) using a range of different players (ie; BBC iPlayer, sky TV, videopass app) on my Nexus 7 (2013).

Just upgraded to 4.4.4 and getting same problems.

This is crazy, these issues are making the devices unusable for a large portion of user base. I will be recommending that people stay away from Google devices until they fix their significant android issues.

I just wanted to comment on this - I did a fresh install of the Android L Preview and setup face unlock.  While face unlock works, my image is still distorted just as it was with 4.4.3 and 4.4.4.

There is a work-around: use ONLY landscape mode for face unlock. You will have to capture new face unlock data in landscape mode to make work, but it does work for unlocking device.

Tested on a 2nd gen Nexus 7 with v4.4.4.

It seems this has also caused aspect ratio for photo and/or video in some 3rd party camera apps (including my own, Open Camera, but also Zoom Camera).

For video, the aspect ratio is wrong if the picture size doesn't match the video's aspect ratio. This can be fixed if Parameters.setPictureSize is set to a size that matches the video's aspect ratio. This is what the stock camera does. But it's unclear why this is necessary - setPictureSize is for taking photos, and nothing to do with video or preview? If developers are meant to be calling setPictureSize, then the documentation needs to be updated for that function (and it's still not good to have this change in behaviour, breaking existing apps).

For pictures, the aspect ratio is wrong if the chosen preview size doesn't match the photo resolution's aspect ratio. Previously choosing such a preview size was valid (the preview would be cropped, rather than squished). This seems to be a bug, or at least a regression in functionality.

Same problem with faceunlock on Nexus 7 2013 since 4.4.3 update. Before that was 9 of 10 now it's 1 of 10...

Here's an idea: DON'T USE FACE UNLOCK until it gets fixed... I mean is this really a killer issue for you? Can't you remember a pin or pattern like the rest of us?

Max: Anybody can read the pin I am writting 100times a day, in that way the facelock is more secure and I really miss it.

Gosh, I'm sure no one's thought of that revolutionary idea!

I don't see anyone claiming this is a killer issue. It's a bug, and people are reporting it, so that Google know to fix it. That's what this page is for - it's how software development works. (I work as a developer - maybe next time I get a bug, I should tell my customers to not use the feature!)

This affects more than face unlock - aspect ratio is broken for video recording and possibly photo, depending on the app/settings.

Face unlock was also one of the highly publicised features of a recent Android version, so you'd think it would seem important to get it working again.

Same face unlock problem here on N7/2013. It started with 4.4.3 update and I didn't complain thinking they'll fix it in next update, but when 4.4.4 came out and it still had the same problem I start searching for solution and got here.

Updated to 4.4.4 last night. No face recognition either on my Nexus 7 2013. Come on Google. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." 4.4.5 coming soon?

I no longer have this issue.... Because my Nexus 7 died and Asus decided they won't honor the warranty - jerks. So, no face unlock issues on my new Galaxy S 8.4!

What about android L - new preview?  

How about _some_ comment/response from the devs?  I got this Google-branded device in the hopes that it would get better than average support....

Face unlock (rebranded as trusted face) works great on my Nexus 7 running the latest L build. Google also has finally improved it.

Lots  of apps no longer load marvel puzzle quest no longer works and several games are running slow since the new update wish i hadn't updated

I upgraded two days ago and now have to turn wi fi on every time I turn nexus back on . also apps keep stopping

I wish I could revert back in time like on the computer . its no fun
