Please provide the user the ability to disable all heads-up notifications in the settings menu. This feature would not disable notifications from applications, but would rather, in effect, restore notification behavior to how it worked pre-lollipop.

I don't want to have to install a pop-up blocker for notifications. I find them obnoxious and unwanted.

Without this feature, the extension is more of a novelty than a truly usable

We use both MS Word and OpenOffice. Not being able to update our docs between the
local and Google Docs versions is taking up time and energy. Please do consider
adding this capability to Google Docs. But, security is most important, of course.

It seems that since yesterday Google is gradually rolling out an offline version of
GDocs through Google Gears. There is also a sync function within it...so it will only

I see someone from Google changed this report status to "821466". However, it is not
clear to me what it means.

If Google has a position with regards to this they need to be open and say something,

Please stop saying "+1", starring an issue means voting for it, so it's an automatic
"+1". Starring an issue really means saying "I want this, this would be great!".

The difference between both is that the number of stars an issue has is automatically
counted, unlike those "+1" comments. This will have more effect on the developers
working on this.

Also, those who star an issue don't get an email every time someone starred it, but
we do get annoying emails every time someone says "+1".

True... People who use Google Docs seriously would need this support. This would mean
kind of like a sync facility or thereof. But when the filenames are same, it would be
great if the old file just got modified with the one which we are uploading to GDocs.

Heads-Up for every single notification is absolutely idiotic.

Add a master switch, disable by default, and let us decide what should be Heads Up and what shouldn't. We're the generation of Android users that understand how to install third party keyboards and home screen launchers, we don't need our hands held on this either.

BTW, The heads up notification for the "google dialer" app is not respond anyway. I cannot answer or dismiss the call with the heads up notifications. Am using Google Nexus 4 with andriod lollipop running in it.

It is now exactly two months since this thread started and no response whatsoever from google on fixing this. What are the next steps we have as users of their software? I'd also like to see more control in the form of: swiping the headsup left moves it to the notification area, and swiping right ignores and removes it. In the current case any direction removes it, making navigating back to the app a bigger hassle when you need to press a button the heads up has covered up..

Please develop an update so that there is an option to disable the floating banner notification at the top of the screen, while not disabling the notification fully from the apps menu in settings. The notification should still appear in the status bar at the top. Furthermore an option to just show the icon of the app which has a new notification rather than it displaying the message across the status bar would be great for privacy reasons. While streaming on chromecast I don't want everyone seeing the floating banner which pops up containing private messages as well as it scrolling across the ticker bar, however I still want to know that I have a notification so dont want to disable it fully, an option to solely display an image of the icon in the status bar at the top would be perfect.

When phone is unlocked, for example whatsapp: set to no pop ups within the app itself, still displays headsup notification. you can turn it off but then no notification at all come through. used to get just the icon on the status bar. More privacy options required. It appears all or nothing! why??!

When Phone is locked, set to hide all, get no notification or status bar icon (the status bar icon only was a good feature). Set it to hidden and get a pop up on the screen to say you have received something (not very discreet)

This is purely based on my findings nothing i do will work! more options are required.

The Heads-Up notifications constantly get in the way when navigating apps with functions at the top. Mis-Clicks happen all the time. Very very annoying.
Furthermore, switching on the screen with notifications coming in like that, does not help privacy much when e.g. in a meeting.

I completely hate this new heads up notifications. This kind of notification mess with some apps like the instagram for example, because, we need to click on a nickname placed in the TOP of the screen to visita people' instagrams on the Instagram App and the Heads-Up notification, principally the notifications of the whatsapp appears in front of this nickname, so we need to quit the notification everytime it appears to enter in other instagrams and to use the Instagram the way we need. Everything is awesome in the 5.0. Its flawless. But this annoying-notification-pop-up thingy is getting on my nerves. Even though i have locked everything with the applock, Whenever someone asks me to give them my phone, i feel a bit insecure because the whatsapp notification pops up right in front on the head of the phone.
There should atleast be an option to turn it off for a certain app.

It's really anoyying that you can only read 1 message from whatsapp (for example), and you must wait like 30 seconds to the notification to move to the status bar to be able to read all (without opening the app), but if you dismiss the "head up" it's also dismissed from the status bar, completely useless. It would be better to be able to:

- Turn heads-up on and off.
- Customize them (selecting max allowed rows, show/hide content when screen is unlocked), meaning that I might like when they are just one row but hate them when they won't let me see the screen because it covers half of it, this is really intrusive.

The old ticker method worked in a far superior way, was less intrusive, and added the possibility to automatically see your notifications without actually having to compromise on either unlocking the phone, or having the big heads up notifications.

I agree with the op and many others, heads up notifications are annoying for apps like WhatsApp, and keep blocking the top of the screen. It's a problem because app controls are often on top and get blocked.

It's also a problem when watching videos (distracting, obtrusive).

I like the system for calls, though. I think the user should be able to choose between head's up notifications and the old ones (better, IMO) on a per app and global basis (I guess calls could continue with the head's up behaviour.

Pop-ups are well known for being despised by users, and pop-up blocker software is very popular. So android has decided to make pop-ups the only way you can find out when someone's trying to get in touch with you by messenger etc?!

This is incredibly frustrating. It detracts from watching videos, ruins full screen games as you end up misclicking and dying/losing, and makes typing on the top of the screen (e.g. google search bar, URL bar) much harder as every five seconds it is covered up.

Please bring in the option to enable/disable heads up notifications without enabling/disabling notifications altogether, on a perapp basis. At the very least allow the user to disable heads up on a blanket basis for the time being /a quick fix to make the OS massively more usable.

Heads up notifications are only useful when immediate interaction is necessary or expected, such as a phone call.

But even for phone calls, if the notification opens on top of your current app's controls, it still sucks a$$, because you can't interact with your app before answering the call.

This is especially problematic when that app is a remote control for your TV and you can't pause whatever you're watching before answering the call. For a smartphone OS, this is pretty stupid.

im one of those people that gets 10.000+ notifications a day,that means 1 notification every 10 seconds... (telegram, groupme, whatsapp, hangouts etc.)

I DONT want to get rid of all notifications! i can turn them off, i know.. but i do need to see the incomming messages.. but just not promped on my screen..! i have popup notifaction off in every app.. and yet android desided i needed a pop-up anyway!.. i can live with the no silent function on my phone.. i just killed every sound.. as i always have.. since my phone is vibrating the entire day then.. but this really really has to stop!

It blocks everything, most important controls on any app are exactly underneath it (ActionBar gets hidden). You can swipe it away, sure, but then you may get another message right after (WhatsApp, Hangouts), and it makes it really frustrating to use any app. And as #363 said, you tend to forget you had a notification because you swiped it away to continue what you were doing. Android 5.1 allows you to swipe those notifications up, and they disappear but are kept on the status bar/notifications list. But in my opinion, that is still not good enough, and still annoying.

Since upgrading to Lollipop every WhatsApp message I get opens a huge popup that displays this message. This is not only a huge interruption of my workflow as this window lies on top of the most used Android UI feature, the Toolbar, but is also a privacy issue, since it screams the content of the message to all people who might be glancing at my screen.

Also, when I’m watching a movie or playing a game every few seconds one quarter of my screen is taken up by this popup. Why? I’m not messaging right now, I’m watching a movie!

Please set the priority of the Notification to medium or less. Why would this be high priority anyway? This is reserved for incoming calls or similar, where not reacting in a timely manner means the calls get missed.

For the love of god, this needs fixed or at least responded to by the android team, and sooner is better than later. Even a simple "max level notification this app can send" setting would do it or even a global toggle or per app toggle.

As far as I'm concerned android 5.0+ is not usable so long as this persists. Those of us in large group hangouts can't even use our phones anymore and while I understand that this is a function of app developers setting messages as high+ priority, it isn't acceptable a user has no way to avoid this other than disabling all notifications of any type... and another google app, hangouts, is the biggest offender and there is no workable solution in sight.

Please fix this behavior soon, this is a show stopper.

That said, for those of you with a rooted phone there is an option-- disable the heads up banner notifications entirely. Process is basically: open the settings.db in sqlite and search global for "heads_up_notifications_enabled" change the 1 to a 0. save, exit, reboot phone.

Yeah. Heads up is OK if it's only taking up 1 line then make a roll notification. And last for at most 2 seconds.
Right now it takes too much space for too long that it is annoying.
Plus. Swiping up the notification should mean that the notification is acknowledged but will open it later from the drop down notification rather than dismissing it

This feature is absolute bobbins. Having to stop and wait ten seconds because I want to keep a notification for later is a pain, but having the content of a notification displayed breaks my privacy a bit; I want to be made aware of a notification, but don't want the content of it displaying for all to see.

There is actually a solution (kind of) and it's switching ON the pop up notifications when screen is off (from the whatsapp settings)
Pop up will only show when ur screen is off and wont bother you when on.

I bought my galaxy S6 last week and seriously, this has to be the worst purchase of all time. Not because the phone is disappointing in any way, its amazing, but because of the heads-up notifications.

These are totally ruining my phone experience.. I cannot regret a buy this much, should have stuck with my old phone if I knew that this couldnt be disabled.. I listen to music and I get a notification, what happens? My screen lights up and while I have my phone in my pocket all of a sudden it changes song, or tries to call someone, or does whatever it wants because the heads-up notifications keep lighting up my screen probably 40 thousand times a day when I have it in my pocket and thats when it becomes unusable.

Today I tried to make a call while having my phone in my pocket while going for a walk. FOUR (4) times it hung up in a window of 30seconds to 2minutes because I had the phone in my pocket due to a notifications lighting up the screen (was using my headset) and one time it even tried to videocall "1534654684111223".. Because of this my phone is practically unusable and I will have to go back to my old one as this one cannot operate properly due to this flawed system. HOW can I use my phone in my pocket when its like this? The saddening answer is that I cant at this time..

I keep asking myself, how fast was this applied and did google even test this once? Will not recommend ANYONE to get an androidphone thats running lolipop at this time as this has to be (imo) one of the biggest flaws ive ever seen in a system. The fact that it cannot be toggled and/or disabled makes it a joke to be included in the android system. Its like its 2000-whatever and im using IOS that shows my notification all over the screen. Dont be like that google.

Return alarm clock notification like they used to be. this is the most obnoxious change. Google needs to stop forcing change for the sake of change. Notifications control. I prefer to only have them in my icon bar. I can't find a way to turn off the - Apple's calls them preview banners - from also being trigger for notifications. I want my phone screen free of all private messages - and the preview banner makes this difficult. I have the G3 and even if you disable popup notifications in text, leave priority at normal, disable interruptions you still get a popup notification that stays locked on your screen until you press the arrow in the bottom left. (to be clear I emailed myself a text - so that is a text popup sent via email.

The new heads-up notifications have REDUCED the functionality of my phone and made notifications MORE intrusive. I can't read or tap anything on the top of the screen while these notifications are active. For example, in Facebook Messenger, I cannot choose any of the tabs at the top of the app or my most recent 1-2 messages until I clear the stupid notification. Same in email and a number of other applications. It makes me not want to use my phone.

i have a Note 4, and last night i updated my system to Lollipop. everything was working great, i've noticed many changes, and i like how the camera perform better in lollipop as even though note 4 camera is quiet strong, the focus and stabilisation sucks, especially compared to iPhone, now think its a bit better

The KitKat notifications were FAR superior.
Additionally, the lack of icons in the top bar on the lock screen is incredibly annoying. I don't need to know who my carrier is, I already know. As much as I applaud the UX team for trying to make it as accessible and convenient as possible, which borders almost very closely to a fruit company's design, this is a major issue.

I would really appreciate if there is an option to totally disable such "Heads Up" notifications from the "Sounds & Notifications" settings page, while retaining the Kitkat style of icons for notifications on the top bar.

I'm not talking about having it appear, and swiping it up; I want it to totally NOT appear at all.

I have no interest in watching a video and swiping up frequently just to "dismiss" a notification. I neither have any interest in playing a game and having a notification suddenly obscure vital information like my health bar, item bar, etc. which requires me to take an action away from the game just to get rid of it.
I also have no interest at all in disabling notifications from an app and never know if anyone is trying to reach me via that app.

This is a serious design flaw. Notifications in Kitkat was a huge leap forward, and notifications in Lollipop is a huge fall backwards into a chasm of black holes.

The heads up I now have due to getting a samsung s6 is ridiculous!!! Why the hell cant you turn it off? I was showing my mum some pics from being on holiday the other day and got a message from the girlfriend........ mum saw the whole lot and not something I would ever want her to read!!! The whole point of Android was to be in complete control of your phone, as you want it, yet the heads up notifications aren't fully customisable, and the do not disturb option / interruptions is extremely poor. If you are going to copy apple at least give us the options they have, under every app how you want to receive the notification.

3) badge
4) interruption

It isn't rocket science. I avoided lollipop for this reason until my phone decided to update anyway.

Firstly in KitKat Android take away the ability to make use of the SD Memory card that so many of us use - yeah nice move there Android. Now they claim to have restored some of those permissions, but buggered if I have seen any improvements. Now to top it all some idiot decided to add floating notifications that you cannot configure! Everytime I hand my phone to someone to show them something or watch a video, look at photos, I get my personal messages showing up for everyone to read!! WTF .. what idiot sat down and thought that was a great idea.

Oh I know lets make life even more difficult for our users and take away the SILENT mode from the on/off button. Like who the hell uses that anyway, what people really need is to go digging around in the settings everytime they want their phone to be silent.

Just want to comment that it's pretty easy to get rid of this interruption shit-fest (and still keep notifications appearing in the *background*) on a rooted phone. Rooting the phone is kind of a hassle for this one little thing, but if you abhor it as much as I do, it's worth it to be rid of them. Here's the sad part, it's *one* variable down in the system settings DB, "heads_up_notifications_enabled" that I had to change from 1 to 0 -- and apparently it would have been too much work for the devs to make a toggle switch in normal user space that turns that option on and off. Really makes me wonder why they named the variable with "enabled" at the end -- to me, that implies there ought to be a way to disable it, too...:P...you know, like in a configurable system, like Android before it started going to shit.

There have been so many times a message had popped up over my games. They either block the controls and interfere with gamepad, or get pressed mid-game and cause focus to switch to the app the notification came from. Needless to say, most fulls creek Gans can't handle app switching this way and simply crash when you try to load them back up.

Since the only way to keep the notification in the bar is to wait for the pop up to time out, I end up just sitting there for 5 seconds waiting for it to go away just so I can press a button underneath it.

It would be acceptable if the user could adjust how long the pop up stays there. But the ticker was far superior since it conveyed all the info without disrupting the app you're trying to use.

Please Google, give the user an option in the settings to disable the heads-up notifications... They really are annoying to a lot of people, not only me.

These are only some reasons for us disliking the new heads-up system:

- They show private information which is truly unwanted sometimes, like when showing someone something on my phone and sb texts me a private msg I do not want the other person to see.

- Also, they interrupt me by making an overlay in the currently active app so that I am not able to use the screen until it disappeared, which takes SO long.

Can't you just include an option to go back to the "old system of notifications" (which existed in the older android versions until now) where they were shown in the status bar but not in heads-up notifications?

To customize these notifications, go to Sound and notification -> Interruptions. Here you can select/deselect priority interruptions and even customize whose calls qualify for priority notifications.

To disable heads up notifications completely, tap When calls and notifications arrive and select Don’t interrupt.

I'm stunned that anyone thought this was a good idea. Google had *perfected* notifications with the ticker system. I've had this "feature" for over 6 months with daily use and I still hate it with a passion! Not a single one of my friends with Lollipop enjoys having their messages displayed like this. We are typical users and we don't want to see the entire message pop up over whatever we were doing when we received it.

All you had to do was have someone's spouse and/or kids test out the system for a week and they would have given you the same feedback. I feel like there is no way that this went unnoticed when testing the system. I bet someone high-up came up with this idea and insisted it be included in the OS release, despite protests from below. "It's a great idea!" they must have thought to themselves. "Now I can see every message that gets sent to me and I don't have to leave the app I was using!" This is a good idea IN THEORY... but in practice just makes things REALLY, REALLY ANNOYING!

Have you ever been in a text conversation and wanted to look something up on the web to show your mate? With heads-up notifications, you'd better pray that they don't send you another message while you're browsing, because when they do, the URL and all browsing features are suddenly 100% blocked from your usage. The more your friend talks, the longer it takes to find what you're looking for. Good luck sharing what you've found with them-- the "share" button is in those inaccessible options, too.

Have you ever been playing a game that keeps its controls at the top of your screen, when suddenly you are bombarded with messages from your dear friend or sibling? At that point, you have no choice but to close your game, because the messages will keep coming, regardless of whether you answer. You don't want to ignore them and disable notifications, because you need to know when they message you, but you still want to be able to respond to them when you reach certain milestones in your game, WITHOUT sacrificing your ability to play. This is utterly impossible with heads-up notifications.

Have you ever used a messenger service with more than one conversation taking place? Every single new message from someone you're not currently in a conversation with comes as a pop-up notification. This means the buttons to go back to the screen to select your conversation are now inaccessible. When you do get a chance to access them, you get another notification that then blocks you from accessing the top conversation(s) and any of the settings at the top of the screen. This makes chatting with multiple people at once truly a royal pain in the rear.

What it comes down to is that in the past, you were simply made aware that you had a message and could look at it at your leisure. With heads-up notifications, whatever message you get is shoved directly in your face, forcing you to deal with it right that second. You wanna watch a video? TOO BAD, READ MY MESSAGE! You wanna read your email? TOO BAD, READ MY MESSAGE! You wanna browse the web? TOO BAD, READ MY MESSAGE NOW!!!!!

Wow! I just got a new phone that runs lollipop. The notifications are ridiculous! They push through anything, take up a bunch of screen, and cannot be dismissed. I chose android because it is user-friendly and allows me to turn things off. Recently this is not the case, my phone freaks out when data is turned off, yells at me that "high-accuracy GPS" is necessary, does not allow me to disable auto-space (has anyone tried typing email addresses????), and has a permanent ! in the corner because I have restricted background data.

These features may or may not be useful, just your users are smart enough that we can choose whether we want them.

FOUND EASY DIY MARSHMALLOW FIX

WHY BROKEN: "Block all" doesn't. It only hides the "allow pop-ups" slider. If that is "on" when you "block all"... unfortunately pop-ups stay active.

HOW TO FIX: Go to the application manager advanced settings. Turn off "block-all" notifications to expose the "allow pop-ups" slider. Disable pop-ups. Then you can switch back to "block-all" if desired.

MY STORY (TL;DR): This was driving me nuts too. I recently bought an S2 tablet. I had some calendar notifications on my 5X phone that I did not want alerting on the tablet. 5X is already on Nougat. Tablet is Marshmallow. Was flabbergasting. I had "blocked all" notifications, but the dang things still popped up. Finally figured out this fix. Now as it turns out... I may need to submit a bug report for the calendar application. Seems to be the same on S2 and 5X. If I try to turn off alerts for a repeated event (editing reminders, clicking "no reminder", clicking "save") then go back and check... it just returns to the default "30 minutes before" instead of "none". Maddening. Seems there are a few "mundane details" left for the google team to figure out.
