It's the second time I loose valuable text due to the lack of this feature. It seems I went back decades ago to the first computers. How is it possible that there's no undo? I'm using an external keyboard and, obviously, I pressed ctrl+z, but nothing happened. Crazy in 2015 right?

The undo command was first implemented in computing in 1974 and It's now 2015! I'm very surprised this is still not in android OS. it's very frustrating when I accidentally delete too much text on and existing memo in the memo app and have no option to undo, then I have to discard all my changes and start again. Please implement this feature soon. Smart phones are too close to computers to lack such basic functionality, it causes much frustration to me and many other people who use them as their planner and organizer.

The supporters of the issue

should mark this issue as starred.
Altough CTRL+Z Undo features is implemented into latest Android, but the Undo/Redo is menu item is missing from CONTEXT MENU of a text box or input field.
Undo/Redo should be added to CONTEXT MENU of a text box or input field, because on Android the most virtual keyboards doesn't have CTRL key, thus the undo feature is not available for them.
CONTEXT MENU based undo would be a global solution for all Android users.
Optionally it could be turned off in the Settings for those users, who use physical keyboard with CTRL key.

Please make UNDO / REDO accessible for all Android users through text field contextual menu (popup menu), as currently implemented for Cut, Copy, Paste, and Select All.

To comment #6 : Yes, it was also reported as https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/36913735 by hundreds of users, but it was closed as Obsolete.
So this new bug keeps the feature request alive.

I'm all for Google to add an undo and redo on the Gboard text selection menu it now has. That'll be useful.
Having undo on the menu popup when selecting text goes against all logic. > To undo, select random text? – Or just press the text-edit button on your keyboard and you'll find undo there. Or have undo even more prominent on your keyboard of you want.

Why would it be under the menu for selected text? Text fields also have a menu when there isn't selected text, and undo would make perfect sense there right next to the existing paste and select all options.

I can't believe that the "undo" issue/debate has been going on for more than 7 years and yet not one single person has been able to fix this bug ?
I guess NSA and the other guys at GCHQ don't want any data to be deleted. Maybe we should ask J. Assange for help.

I'm assuming they think it'd be too hard to implement across all apps that use typing (almost all apps). I'm sure it'll be a big thing to implement, but it's not impossible and not too big to say it's not worth it. They easily could put it in the part that pops up when you select a text, and implement it across all droid devices & all apps (have it be a universal feature. Like the Samsung Note has a stylus made just for that phone & it's features can be used across all apps, such as smart select- you hold down the stylus button and select text with it. This works in android on every app you're in. So it's def possible to make this a universal feature for android. I would like to know what the reason is, if maybe it just hasn't been addressed to developers? Or has it been addressed and they have a specific set of reasons why they won't do it, or are possibly working on it.
te...@gmail.com <te...@gmail.com> #13
That could be true. However, given such a long time of development, technical difficulties is unlikely to be able to hinder the success of putting just UNDO function in device's onscreen keyboard. It's so annoying every time I need that UNDO thing! Or all of existing Android system developer can't find any other way of UNDO rather than ones already patented by Apple?

Losing huge chunks of text isn't something that happens to me frequently, but when it does, it really peeves me that I have to rewrite it from memory rather than having an option to navigate into a toolbar and push a button that undoes the mistake. Every minute spent rewriting something for the second time feels like a giant middle finger from the software designers slapping you on the head, reminding you that this is your fault, shaming your fat fingers, and laughing at your misery.

Here it is 7 years later, and still no undo/redo. Why? What's the problem?

Here's another Undo-for-text issue that has survived so far:

I'm starring it ... other "duplicates" we should star?

Most of us have lost text that we've typed into a webform or into an email using Chrome and/or Gmail on Android.
Currently, there are dozens of tickets in Google's bug tracker software bemoaning the lack of access to the Undo / Redo feature built into Android but inaccessible to users. These tickets keep getting tagged "Won't Fix" by developers.
I've suggested to CloudHQ that they provide an Undo / Redo extension for Chrome and Gmail that provides UI access to the Undo / Redo feature.
Google has provided UI access to Undo / Redo in their Android office apps including Docs and Sheets, but not in Chrome or Gmail.
Searching the Google Play Store for Undo, I found two imperfect apps that do not replace the keyboard but "listen" to what is typed to provide multiple Undo and Redo.
Inputting+ app -- This looked promising, with floating visual Undo / Redo / Find / Replace buttons. Doesn't work with web UI yet per developer (so no good for Chrome). Didn't work on my Android phone in other contexts. Might be a permissions issue. Might conflict with the keyboard contextual menu or cliptray. I don't know. Might just be out of date, per recent reviews. Reviewers on Google Play said that recent updates broke the app and that it hasn't been updated in a year.
Typing Control app -- This app uses the volume control long press up and down buttons for multiple Redo and Undo. This app worked for me in all contexts. The limitation is that this app only seems to work while the text box is in focus continuously. And it's not in the visual UI as users expect. What is missing is visual feedback. I'd suggest flashing an Undo or Redo icon over the text and/or using Undo / Redo sounds. (Also, the short-press feature of moving the cursor forward and backward seems does not function as expected, jumping the cursor on first use to the beginning or end of the text in the text area. Facebook has also had issues with cursor placement recently, so it may be an Android issue.)
Still, the biggest issue that causes the most heartache seems to be that neither Chrome nor Gmail has implemented a visually accessible UI for Undo/Redo for its text areas -- and this needs to be fixed.
In the meantime, the Typing Control app solves this with the fewest bugs and UI conflicts by using the Volume Up/Down buttons for Undo/Redo.
