I did experience the same, on my Nexus 5, with clean Android 5.1 factory images.
After about 36 hours there where various processes restarting, (active) apps disappearing while using them, launcher redraws. Less then 150MB free RAM. Not sure if System or Apps did take most of the ram.
Rebooted about 14 hours ago, everything was working again. This morning I had near 1GB free RAM and 3 hours later it's already dropped to 750MB.
Although it isn't bad that system and/or apps are using memory, thus having low free memory. Unused memory is kinda useless, right? :)

Yes, Memory leak is still present for me too. System memory usage shot up to 750 MB just after 30 hours of up time.
Google+ has restarted itself couple of times.

Same for me too. I woke up this morning and notice that gmail was laggy. I checked the ram and it reported 800mb used. I clear all open apps and it is still the same. Restart fix it of course. This was the only fix that i was looking forward to in the 5.1 update. So disappointed....

My system clogged up over 800 mb today but my phone was not slow and it didn't redraw and restart apps. After few hours it went to 600, now it's 700mb taken by system.
jl...@gmail.com <jl...@gmail.com> #8
Screenshot of devidce information and a series of screenshots taken in a short lapse of time (seconds) where you can see system ram changes without doing anything from 400 to 600mb...

54h uptime. Apps including the launcher are restarting just like with 5.0

Device model: Nexus 5 32GB
Manufacturer: LG
OS Version: 5.1
For me is easy to recreate the problem, simply start a game like Farm Heroes Saga, then close it by swiping away. For each time I do this the system memory increases 100mb or more until there is no more space and then cell phone stops responding. Additional I noticed than when I start Farm Heroes Saga for example the free memory on ‘Show Cache Processes’ is negative as can be seen on the print I took, and there is no free memory, this problem can be recreated even in the first minute after boot simply by starting the game.
Even if I don’t play any game the problem appears but not so soon and apps start to restart sooner or later.
Bug report in attachment.

I change the kernel to Francisco Franco kernel r72, and problem solved. The system ram is always about 350 MB, and don´t get increased by magic.
Google you have to tune the nexus 5 kernel. It would be good to update it to 3.10.........

jz...@gmail.com <jz...@gmail.com> #15
Same here. was easily reproduced using farm heroes saga. Just open the app and swipe it away as soon as it's done loading. System RAM went up to 1.4 gig
jz...@gmail.com <jz...@gmail.com> #16
for me franco r72 kernel did not fix the issue... Come on google, this bug must be marked as critical
jl...@gmail.com <jl...@gmail.com> #17
Yes also happen with franco kernel.
So the problem is that every app you open increases system ram, and even you close the apps, the ram don´t decrease. This happens untill a point where all the ram is occupied and the system collapse.

Using apps with low ram usage, the problem seems to take longer to appear. But with high intensity apps/games the problem is visible almost right away.

A can confirm this is true :(
Easiest way to reproduce the leak..

This must be some kind of joke, or something.
We've been plagued by this since November, and we don't even know if it'll ever be fixed...
This update was our hope, but looks like nothing changed.

Any possibility that Farm Heroes Saga makes a sys call that allocate ram via JNI but forgets to return it to the sys?

No repro on my Nexus 6. Loading a large app (Goat Simulator in my case), pulling up recents, and swiping it away, "System" jumps from 350MB to around 800MB. However, the next garbage collection that runs brings System back down to 350MB.
It may be that the Nexus 5 is more impacted due to the amount of ram, as it gets into a low memory condition before it can clean up the heap.

After a lot of testing, by trying to reproduce the issue from Farm Heroes Saga to other applications for around 30-45 minutes (open around 10 app, play around a little, switch to another app, and swipe it to close), it seems the case are not replicable. The System Memory are staying around at 500-600MB only.
Maybe it just bad written app (Farm Heroes Saga)?
Some application that i tested:
Bomber Friends
Brain Wars
Clash of Clans
Crazy Swinger
Crossy Road
Dr. Parking
Froggy VR
Hay Day
Jolly Jam
Lamper VR
Lapso
Microtip
Minion Rush
PvZ 2
Skyward
Space Team
SpaceTerror
Where's My Water
Worms 3
Zombie Shooter
