I was hopeful that the release of API 18 (4.3) would have created a solution to this, unfortunately it includes version 3158130

Version of Gradle Plugin: 2.3.0
Version of Gradle: 3.3
Version of Java: 8
OS: Win 10
Steps to Reproduce:
example project:
Clone the above project and attempt to build. Note that it does not build.
If you change the gradle to 2.2.0 and build, it will build and work as designed.
