We're seeing a similar error in our code. Appears to be a combination of AGP 8.6.0 and Kotlin 2 needed to hit it.

The issue was with the rendering engine native libraries, and was fixed by a new release of those libraries, namely layoutlib_jni.so and libandroid_runtime.so for linux.

Opensuse Leap 15.6 here: I tried and re-tried with more freetype fonts and tools installed, to no avail.
Very annoying, especially the fact that it does not occur on win11 which I have on my notebook.
